Is this true that on S3, the quality of photos is lower on custom/CM-based roms, than on stock rom?
Are there other elements that don't work / work worse on non-stock roms on S3?
Custom roms is not the correct term. Touchwiz based custom roms, camera is identical
Aosp based custom roms, not so great. Works ok....

What do you mean by "not so great"? Less camera app options or lesser picture quality?
As many or more options. Since samsung didn't share their camera HAL source, aosp camera not quite as good quality as touchwiz camera. Its fine for me though

Is this any better in i9505 with regards to camera HAL? I know it is Snapdragon CPU so in that department it is much better, but what about camera on AOSP?
The camera hal has been back engineered just recently and has been made open source by Paul K. which should have improved the quality of pictures on CyanogenMod 10.2
There still could be bugs but now the team has code that they can work on.

And is there any way to use a TouchWiz apk on CM and use those extra options? I would imagine it is just an app, unless it is a part of the whole UI and impossible to port.

The Touchwiz camera is an app that requires parts of the TouchWiz Framework. Maybe someone could port it to CM but I suppose it would be pretty difficult.
I use the Snap Camera App. It has HDR and other great settings and works like a charm.

Look at the great pictures i was able to take with it

Only works with 4.2.2 but very good port Only Recording is broken btw. Snap Camera is really great i use it too, i only miss the lower light shot option from touchwisz (because night mode is not the same).

HDR with this app work as taking several separate photos (which takes several seconds), or shooting just once (and phone doing all the shots it needs at once) like with TW?

As far as I know it takes 2 photos and then adds them together but it works pretty good as you can see in my second picture I posted a couple of posts ago.

Yes I understand, and I can do HDR shots with my old Desire, too. But the app takes 5-6 separate shots in total, and you have to hold the phone still for about 10 seconds. And on top of that, the moving objects will be all screwed up because of that.
Do you actually see two picture being taken, or does it look like just one from the UI point of view?

Yes you can see that the App takes 2 pictures but it does not take 10 seconds to take a HDR picture. It takes about 2-3 seconds with Snap.
None of the alternatives can replace the touchwiz hdr function. I use camera 360 which has a "hdr effect" mode which is ok but as mentioned, waiting for a 2nd or 3rd photo is a problem

I wonder how the Samsung App is doing it technically? I mean for HDR you need at least 2 pictures with different exposure levels. How can the App do an HDR shot with only one picture?

I suppose it takes several photos, but you just see it as one being taken.
I wonder what is the difference in HDR photographs of moving objects using TW and third-party programs.
I believe the TW camera takes 2 or 3 pictures within a split second of each other. It could also just take 1 picture and post-process the image differently 3 times. After all, pretty much all digital camera effects are post processed.

when the ics update comes out for the s2 will there be zero camera lag like the nexus?
or is there some kernal that can do this?
From what I've heard the camera "speed" is down to both software and hardware
Although the software will (I think) be improved, the hardware is the same so at best it will be a bit faster.
There probably won't be a change though.

I think it is totally possible depending on if the software in the ics build works well with the camera hardware of the sgs2.
I know the hardware is capable on the sgs2 because when I shoot in burst mode using "Camera FX" I can shoot 32 photos in under 5 seconds

That's at a low resolution though, not the full 8mp.
Using fast burst camera I can take shots at 480x800 roughly every 0.03 seconds (tested using an online stopwatch )

If you focus the first shot won't the subsequent shots use the same focus?
Should be fine for most cases if the subject is the same distance away from you

is there any MOD or hack for SGS II camera , enables us to shoot uncompressed pictures , (for better quality),.

use any custom camera app like camera360 and set the quality level to 100%, stock camera app does compress the image @ 90%

I saw a post on here (CM9 discussion thread maybe ? Not 100% certain) bout 3-4 months ago saying someone was working on giving the SGS2 the ability to shoot pictures in RAW. Haven't seen anything further since, and I'm not sure it was in that CM9 thread.

That would be amazing. I was wondering if it was possible to get RAW images from the SGS2 camera. Can't afford a DSLR
That's the thing tho, is it even possible ? Yeah, it would be pretty good. Wonder if that would iron out the various 'artifacts' you sometimes see in images taken with the SGS2 ? (like the red/pink blotch, poor quality in low light, etc, etc). May not even be possible with the hardware no matter what's done with the firmware.

The one thing holding me back from flashing cm10 is the fact that I lose the TW camera. The HDR function in it works _so_ well.
I've tried a few free versions of various HDR apps and they all suck compared to the TW one.
Does anyone have experience with any of the ones on the market and can maybe share their settings?
HDR/MDR
I don't consider any mobile camera good. Any cheapest point-n-shoot will punch it in face. If u got SGS3 for camera - u r wrong.
I heard Photoshop can do HDR - so look into that. Also PlayMarket is a good source of information.
I disagree. The camera on this phone is more than adequate, and HDR is impressive

Any recent cheap point in shoot will do better in terms of IQ.
Having said that even cell phone cameras vary in quality and if you use them then you'd be silly not to take that into account if it is important to you, even if you've got another camera that is better.... nothing wrong with buying the S3 for the camera. Not sure how that would be "wrong".
the camera was like 70% of my interest in getting the S3. I have a nikon d7000 DSLR and know that the cell camera will never be able to get close to that beast but sometimes I don't want to lug around my dslr and having a cell that can take great pictures is a huge plus especially if you don't want to carry a point and shoot and a cell phone at the same time.

I had previously used PRO HDR on the OG EVO, and it worked great. The EVO 3D didn't support HDR apps at all. The GS3 has a great built-in HDR option, and tried PRO HDR again - the native one is better!
So for now I'm sticking with the stock camera (I'm rooted, but running stock until CM10 has a semi-stable build..).

Get Camera360! I love this camera, its free and so many effects and you can actually choose between a couple different HDR modes.
Ok so a couple of things.
I noticed any camera app on a TW rom has what I would describe as graining, I can see pixels constantly changing colour akin to watching a analolue tv signal. If I take photos this affects the photo also. It affects how clear the photo is, I have a photo of an object on my desk eg. that looks brilliant taken whilst was on AOKP. Will try to attach the photos to this post. On the camera on the AOKP rom, this graining is gone, its vanished. (shame the camera app is unstable). Taking a photo of the same object using any camera app on a TW rom has a much less satisfying result. It would seem whatever that driver is thats used on AOSP roms it does offer better quality. Or is it a setting that causes the graining?
Also a few times when usng the camera, it just closes itself, if I am right this is a rom problem? what would cause that behaviour usually? The closing itself only is happening since I switched back to neatrom, so may end up posting this 2nd question in the neatrom thread.
no comments
a update
I took a photo at lower res (as was too big) and then accidently seen all the graining was gone and picture clear again.
so it seems lowering the resolution of the photo does wonders.
so its related to higher pixel count and it appears, obviously one might say the lower resolution hides the problem, possibly. so eg. zooming on on a my 0.8mp 1024x768 picture so its same screen size as the 8mp pic has much higher detail.
I will if time restore my aokp nandroid and test 8pm photos again if I can.
I attached 2 pics, the usb_back is 8mp other is 0.9mp.
I've never seen what you refer to. Generally the tw camera is better quality because samsung didn't release their camera HAL source so its quality can't be reproduced

I put AOKP back on for more testing, showed some freinds and they picked out all AOKP pics as clearly better, extra options in the app (jpeg quality and more focus options as well as special affects) and the quality is simply better full stop.
the TW cam got ported for AOSP anyway.
so just flash the TW cam and u got the same quality. (theme / addons section in this forum)

where is it? and i want aosp on tw not other way round the tw camera gui is aweful so even if quality fixed i wouldnt like using it.
i brought a professional camera app which a few on here reccomended, great improvement over tW interface but imo not as good as AOSP interface and it closes by itself a lot. It also doesnt fix the quality issue and when I run the app on AOSP the quality is fixed so the quality seems related to the samsung camera driver not app.

Are you referring to the camera when running custom rom or is that available to sideload/download over stock rom? In what other instances is it better, same or worse than the stock camera?
Sorry for the noob Q but I really don't want to lose the good camera when rocking a custom ROM. I only want the custom rom as I'm coming from the super stable/smooth Nexus 4. Everything from games to regular apps are highly optimised for the nexus software. Yet I love, knock on, IR blaster, built in radio, stock camera etc of the G2.
Really not a fan of the AOSP camera when I flashed OES ROM. Anyone know if it's possible to sideload the LG camera app, or is it just impossible?
Well i have malladus custom stock rom. His rom has some kind of update that make the camera focus faster in daylight. But the AOSP rom that i used had a WAYYY faster autofocus at night.

What AOSP ROM were you using? Isn't malladus a stock based ROM?
I sideloaded the nexus 5 camera app on my stock rooted G2 and found it to be seriously weak compared to the stock camera app. Although in dark conditions, even the stock camera would show motion blur all the time. I'm dying to flash AOSP but don't want a poor camera.
Are my fears unwarranted?

Exactly David. I've done side by side comparison with family i5 taking still shots and the g2 produced better exposed and detailed images. Moving objects however and the iPhone was much better.

The battery life on the other hand is what really makes me want to keep it.
Can anyone try out Camera360 from the Play Store and post the results for low light and motion shots? (I don't have the phone yet)
Try the Focal camera. In my limited experience, it focuses quicker and seems a little more responsive.

I've tried pretty much every combination of roms and camera apps. My experiences are :
The LG camera app does better in most aspects regarding picture quality due to greatly superior image processing algorithms.
Aggressive sharpening, what in my opinion is a bit too long shutter speed and too long focus time makes it seem sluggish compared to an iPhone 5S. It takes more effort taking a good picture.
Additionally, things like panorama are useless at night. The viewfinder fps is horribly slow, making the camera ux feel really bad.
The aosp app is quicker at opening, but has less functionality. I can't understand anyone claiming the aosp camera taking better pictures at any time of day, the night photos are terribly dark.
It's easy to see that the closed source components of the LG camera software effortlessly blows the aosp drivers out of the water.
Sent from my LG-D802 using xda app-developers app
I've always been a fan of those quickshot camera apps. I have a son too so I just blast my camera at him for 8-10 shots a second and pick the best one.
Also you can try to lower the megapixel down. I'm not sure if this would make it faster but should. There are also steps you can do in the settings to provide quicker response times. I believe there is also some modifications that fix a few things for a better experience also.
I've heard that the camera is actually pretty good, but flawed because of bugs and timings not being fine tuned (possibly a kernel fix). I've not had much usage with my camera but it takes pretty good shots when I've needed it to. Coming from a Galaxy Nexus, I don't see much difference.
In my opinion, its a quick camera. It is what it is.
You can also just record video and pull pics from it.
There are several options. I like the Burst shots myself, then just go back and delete the blurry ones.
