when the ics update comes out for the s2 will there be zero camera lag like the nexus?
or is there some kernal that can do this?
From what I've heard the camera "speed" is down to both software and hardware
Although the software will (I think) be improved, the hardware is the same so at best it will be a bit faster.
There probably won't be a change though.

I think it is totally possible depending on if the software in the ics build works well with the camera hardware of the sgs2.
I know the hardware is capable on the sgs2 because when I shoot in burst mode using "Camera FX" I can shoot 32 photos in under 5 seconds

That's at a low resolution though, not the full 8mp.
Using fast burst camera I can take shots at 480x800 roughly every 0.03 seconds (tested using an online stopwatch )
I like the idea, but I think I'd rather just have have properly focused pics...

If you focus the first shot won't the subsequent shots use the same focus?
Should be fine for most cases if the subject is the same distance away from you

... The camera, Coming from an HTC device with 0 shutter lag is painful. Especially since 90 % of my pictures are of my 10month old daughter, the 1-3 seconds between the time i press the shutter button and when it actually snaps is killing me. Then it doesn't help that it freezes and shows the picture i want but then save the frame from 2sec. Later, please tell me this isn't the norm and i need to send it back

I hate to say it but it seems to be normal for the camera, mine is the same way,if you want a fast camera try this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spritefish.fastburstcameralite&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5zcHJpdGVmaXNoLmZhc3RidXJzdGNhbWVyYWxpdGUiXQ.. that is the free version which don't allow any settings to be changed like the paid version but it is super fast.
I'm hoping ICS will fix this. It IS painfully slow...sometimes it takes as much as 5 seconds before it has written the image and I can take another.
I feel your pain man, but have bad news for you. Them lil monsters dont slow down any, so you better learn to live by the motto "accuracy through volume". I have twin 2.5 year olds. I just start tapping that shutter button and dont bother with the preview, just snap snap snap and hope for the best.
I have noticed severe shutter lag as well. I thought it was the ROM I was using (TPC) but found the same thing with both Saurom and stock.

That's what I do with action shots with any camera. Preview is nice, but you're best off to fire off shots, then sort through the pics later.
Camera360 doesn't do this, so I'm guessing it's something wrong with the OS build.
Its the camera app...not the camera. I have been playing with camera apps from other devices like the skyrocket and they work with no lag but the ui is off (size/ resolution difference)
Someone pulled the ics camera app and posted in the apps section a while back btw

EDIT: Found it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528431
hmm... interesting
i just tested, it's not as exageratd as 3 mili sec lag, but it does take at least 1 mili sec before you are able to shoot again
i say it's intresting because on the T989 which have practically the same innars except for the high res screen, and LTE radio
the camera on the T989 is instant, i can shoot non stop, 0 mili sec lag
Hi ,.
is there any MOD or hack for SGS II camera , enables us to shoot uncompressed pictures , (for better quality),.
THX
use any custom camera app like camera360 and set the quality level to 100%, stock camera app does compress the image @ 90%

I saw a post on here (CM9 discussion thread maybe ? Not 100% certain) bout 3-4 months ago saying someone was working on giving the SGS2 the ability to shoot pictures in RAW. Haven't seen anything further since, and I'm not sure it was in that CM9 thread.

That would be amazing. I was wondering if it was possible to get RAW images from the SGS2 camera. Can't afford a DSLR
That's the thing tho, is it even possible ? Yeah, it would be pretty good. Wonder if that would iron out the various 'artifacts' you sometimes see in images taken with the SGS2 ? (like the red/pink blotch, poor quality in low light, etc, etc). May not even be possible with the hardware no matter what's done with the firmware.

I am just wondering, is the shutter speed of the camera software based or hardware based... just seen how fast the galaxy sIII camera shutter is and even that of the google nexus compared to the one EVO3D have... hope its a software base... so that at least there is a chance brilliant devs can include it in their custom ROMS...
been asking this for sometime now... but not getting any answer so far..
+1 to this.

I remember reading some time ago that Chad was working on adding zero shutter lag to the 3d through his kernel, but it would break the 3d capabilities of the camera. It did not happen afaik, but I am not sure if it was because it ended up not being possible due to hardware or what.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2
I don't use 3D that much so zero lag on 2D would be nice.
im pretty sure its hardware, but i dont know, in the recent ICS leak, the roms that have been coming out have been outstanding but it seems the shutter lag has gotten slower then the GB bulid roms. it could just be me though.
have that feeling too.. but cant try the gb stock rom now... just dont want to go backwards...

Same here, since I went to MeanROM ICS my battery has been burning faster, but the user interface of ICS is worth it... not to mention the facial recognition lock screen? oh yeah...
There's a camera app called Fast Burst Camera that you guys could try, there's a feature limited free version, and a pay version, i was looking forward to chad's zsl... but anyways, i like the results of the lite version but only been using it for 2 days, i read somewhere that the app actually records a video and then give you the frames. Am planning on upgrading my phone so am not paying for the app. Anyways give it a try...let us know how was your exp. with the app...

yup, just tried it and it works... the pix is not as nice as the one taken from mwakious cam mod though..... hey wait,,, if this app can force our camera to shoot at that speed... then there is a great possibility smart devs can do something about this with the stock camera apps....???????????????????
also, it will force open the stock cam apps if you press the shutter for the continuos shots...

How is the quality? Since video tends to be recorded at a lower resolution that still pictures, I would think that would reduce quality by doing it this way.
i have the settings for the camera on the highest res and auto focus, yet i still get sub-par pictures. we took my Note on vaca to the beach in the Mayan Riviera in April, and the pictures were lousy quality. my old iP 3GS took better pix that appeared of a higher resolution.
am i missing something?
i just turned on the anti-shake setting. could that have been the culprit? or is there some camera app that will "fix" my camera and make it seem like the 8 MP beast i thought it would be.
(BTW, my wife brought her 8MP Galaxy S and her pix came out way better from our mexican vaca...)

I too have noticed a lack of sharpness in the stock cam. I just dnldd the other and didn't see much difference if I compared the two test pics side by side but since I am in a dark room...I then changed settins on both to night and then took one each and the Camera ICS shot was MUCH sharper and had a much better white balance. I'll try some out in the sun today and report back
great, tx red :good:
Is this true that on S3, the quality of photos is lower on custom/CM-based roms, than on stock rom?
Are there other elements that don't work / work worse on non-stock roms on S3?
Custom roms is not the correct term. Touchwiz based custom roms, camera is identical
Aosp based custom roms, not so great. Works ok....

What do you mean by "not so great"? Less camera app options or lesser picture quality?
As many or more options. Since samsung didn't share their camera HAL source, aosp camera not quite as good quality as touchwiz camera. Its fine for me though

Is this any better in i9505 with regards to camera HAL? I know it is Snapdragon CPU so in that department it is much better, but what about camera on AOSP?
The camera hal has been back engineered just recently and has been made open source by Paul K. which should have improved the quality of pictures on CyanogenMod 10.2
There still could be bugs but now the team has code that they can work on.

And is there any way to use a TouchWiz apk on CM and use those extra options? I would imagine it is just an app, unless it is a part of the whole UI and impossible to port.

The Touchwiz camera is an app that requires parts of the TouchWiz Framework. Maybe someone could port it to CM but I suppose it would be pretty difficult.
I use the Snap Camera App. It has HDR and other great settings and works like a charm.

HDR with this app work as taking several separate photos (which takes several seconds), or shooting just once (and phone doing all the shots it needs at once) like with TW?

Yes I understand, and I can do HDR shots with my old Desire, too. But the app takes 5-6 separate shots in total, and you have to hold the phone still for about 10 seconds. And on top of that, the moving objects will be all screwed up because of that.
Do you actually see two picture being taken, or does it look like just one from the UI point of view?

Yes you can see that the App takes 2 pictures but it does not take 10 seconds to take a HDR picture. It takes about 2-3 seconds with Snap.
None of the alternatives can replace the touchwiz hdr function. I use camera 360 which has a "hdr effect" mode which is ok but as mentioned, waiting for a 2nd or 3rd photo is a problem

I wonder how the Samsung App is doing it technically? I mean for HDR you need at least 2 pictures with different exposure levels. How can the App do an HDR shot with only one picture?

I suppose it takes several photos, but you just see it as one being taken.
I wonder what is the difference in HDR photographs of moving objects using TW and third-party programs.
I believe the TW camera takes 2 or 3 pictures within a split second of each other. It could also just take 1 picture and post-process the image differently 3 times. After all, pretty much all digital camera effects are post processed.
