Buying a XTZ still recommendable now? - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it still recommendable to buy a XTZ now given that the nexus 7 has already been released and the note 10.1 has been refreshed? I just sold my ipad 4 and was originally set on buying the nexus 7 but am hesistant because of all the build quality problems.
How is the AOSP program coming along? Are the CM builds usable? What sort of bugs are there?
Thank you

I literally Just bought an XTZ 32GB this week (Right after watching Samsung announce the the new Note 10.1), and in the two days I've had it I have ZERO regrets. This sucker is FAST, and the screen is gorgeous!
Haven't used the CM builds yet but I understand there are stable ones out.

I would buy another XTZ as opposed to the Nexus or Note tablets, there are too many issues with the Nexus tablets for me and the Note tablets have terrible dev support thanks to Samsung and their lies.
The XTZ is amazing, the AOSP builds have everything working except HDMI/HLL. That's not supported on any device with CM though as far as I know.

I'd definitely still recommend it!

Are the AOSP builds stable with almost no bugs? how is the battery life?
I'll be getting the 16gb version, correct me if I'm wrong but I can send sms with this thing right? Just no LTE?
Is the battery life that big of an issue?

I would definitely buy the XTZ. That's a great tablet, especially for the form factor.
It's brillant to watch movies too. I recently did transatlanctic flights and was happy with the battery drain: only around 15% per movie.
The battery drain is much more important when playing "hard" such as Real Racing 3, and you feel the tablet heat! But I guess this would be the same with all other tabs.

I consider buying it also but:
What about that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2419767

IFA is over and you know whats coming this year.
I am using cm10.2. Next step will be a multiboot solution with Ubuntu Touch.
Don`t forget do buy a dock. This is very important->no more opening of the ports (this can really suck)
Color adjustments (white is not Paperwhite) problems at low brightness, bleeding and this torsion problem exist. @cm10.2 i never noticed the torsion problem and the bleeding is minimal.
CM is usable, but i think(know) the SonyUI and 4.2 are a great deal, too.

i would recommend it thou the home screen is still laggy with the 4.2 update
nova etc solve it but cant understand why sony could not fix it
one ques for fellow xtz owners - does appgratis load and open properly on ur xtz ?

Just arrived today ....
I just opened the box a couple hours ago. Fired it up and the battery was at 60%.
Can't put it down.
I was using an HP Touchpad with CM9. Big difference!
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this tablet!

Tablet is still awesome. I just wish I had a case that was as nice to use as the Poetic Slimline but without the weight... So far none of the other cases are as nice.

Iv used mine for some time now, its a great tablet however I think something like the nexus 7, or Z ultra is more comfortable for me, Im trying to sell mine but here in India i dont know anyone who wants to buy it.

It's still the best case i've seen by far. Just that it basically weighs as much as the tablet.

FYI
If you are using a case without magnetic lock. you can insert a small magnet inside your case cover. magnetic sensor is located at the left side of the front camera( screen facing you ).
screen will automatically turned off when the cover is closed and it will turned on when you open it.
:good:

Poetic slimline from Amazon
I ordered the Poetic slimline from Amazon and I can confirm there is access to the charging port and the weight factor is no big deal.
Excellent case.

Glad to see so many like this tablet, I'm giving serious thought to buying one. I sold my Asus transformer tf300t, my last 2 android phones have been Samsung, my wife has a nexus 7 and I've never owned a Sony android device. The xperia z is probably the best looking tablet I've ever seen and the video reviews I have watched of it just make me want it more.

Okay.
If you want a 10.1" tablet I'll still recommend the Tablet Z.
If you're happy with a 7" Tablet go for the new Nexus 7.
Both tablets have the same processor, so you won't really notice a difference in performance.
As for the fact that the Nexus 7 runs stock Android without bloatware, it runs slightly faster than the XTZ, but not that much.

So there was no successor presented at IFA, which makes me wonder why?
The Xperia Z was announced in January and released in February, now we already have the Z1.
The Xperia Tablet Z was announced in February and released in May, and although it's still a good device, it would have needed the some overhaul (things like IP58 instead of IP57, additional GSM voice communication, 3GB RAM, Snapdragon 800 + Adreno 330, better camera).
I am especially curious because the Xperia Tablet Z is already on the remaining stock list at our mobile network operator and pretty much sold out.
I've never had a tablet before, but I'll get two for free when I renew two data plans at the beginning of next year, so I have some more time to wait and see, but if nothing was announced at IFA, when is the next possibility for a successor to the XTZ?

What the hell has this to do with "tablet S General"?
It really has nothing to do with Sony but for the record, I'm not buying the Nexus 7 tablet, for a start I don't like the fact it has a phone user interface, yes, it's smart but it's Jelly Bean, any device with Jelly Bean would act in the same way - seeing as though Sony has confirmed Jelly Bean for this device than i'll wait thanks!

I am waiting until they release a Nexus10. I bought the original Galaxy Tab 7" thinking that I preferred the smaller tablet as I could grip it in one hand. Then I bought the Sony Tablet S and I love the larger screen.

I'm with Gramon on this one. As cheap as a Nexus 7 is, it's missing too many features for me, and that 7" form factor is just too small after upgrading my old GT-P1000 7" Galaxy Tab for the Sony's glorious 9.4". I would never go back.
For an added bonus, I don't know what problems you guys are having. I have the occasional WiFi disconnect (saves battery so I live with it), but everything else about mine is still great.

Totally agreed. I want a nexus7 just for the ease of carrying, nothing more. You cant do anything productive with a 7inch tablet. it really depends with what youre using the tablet for. For me, its reading magazines and comics, so 7inches is too small for a comfortable viewing (ive tried the galaxy tab7, not so nice) so 10 inches is the most appropriate, for me. It really depends on what youre mostly using it for. I agree with the wifi thing, it saves battery.
For the mean time ill be sticking to my tablet s till the xperia tablet is out, the folded magazine design still wins me over other tablets.

I swear I should just keep this on clipboard!
The Nexus 7 is cheap and relatively capable, but doesn't have have any of the bells and whistles, and most importantly is much smaller at 7". This will be particularly noticeable when reading and watching videos. It is however much more portable.
The Surface is currently unavailable so pricing is an unknown at this point. The Surface is much larger and is aimed at more of a laptop-replacement than most others. It runs Windows 8 which you will either like or absolutely detest. It will come in two variants: the more power-efficient, thinner and lighter but feature-limited ARM version and the larger x86 version with extra ports, processing power and the ability to run full Windows including legacy apps. The OS is its biggest feature and that's a personal choice.
The XPERIA tablet is designed as a replacement for the Tablet S and is slightly thinner and lighter, but with a more conventional form factor. Beyond that, who knows. It hasn't been announced yet (expect that at IFA), but it will probably be a Tegra 3-powered device similar to the S, but a bit more conventional. This is all complete hearsay, so do not put confidence in it.
My final message would be: don't decide now. Wait until after IFA and after more details about the new generation of tablets emerge. Then decide, but remember the golden rule:
There is no best tablet, only the best tablet for a specific purpose.

Also, this might just be me, but if you already have a Galaxy Note, a 7" Nexus 7 is probably not the right choice for you. There's only going to be 2 inches of difference between them. This is just my opinion, of course, but make sure you try out a Nexus before you go buying one.

Google nexus

It's not perfect but there are many things about the Nexus 10 that are better than the iPad 4. There's no denying that the difference between the iPad 3 and 4 is smaller than the difference between the first and second or the second and third and the iPad 4 has suffered because of it.
I had Sony Xperia Tablet S. Now I.m happy owner of Nexus 10 It's amazing device. Beautiful display, nice design, fast. No crash at all Really stable Tablet. My wife also love it Now I have more time for playing when she has Nexus is her hands hehe. For me best tablet so far.

I dunno, there's a pretty significant difference between the iPad 3 and 4 under the hood-- the thing is that Apple got the interface problem solved a long, long time ago, and given what kinds of games most people play on their tablets (casual things like Angry Birds), it's not like your average consumer will notice anything changed besides the Lightning port over 30-pin.
As an iPad 3 launch day buyer, I was annoyed by the quick release of the iPad 4 (because those differences do matter to me, especially the processor bump), but my iPad 3 serves me well enough already and I like having the option of using a 4:3 tablet if I feel like it. The Nexus 10's not half bad in portrait, but it always makes me feel a tad ridiculous.
Just bought an Nexus 10 second hand. I know a new one is around that corner but just couldn't wait. Had a look at the Toshiba Pro tegra 4 at my local store but it didn't impress me. It was a bit laggy.
Fingers crossed it will come tomorrow.

Nobody knows when new Nexus 10 will be released... don't worry you made a good choice buying current N10 I heard that Toshiba with t4 has overheating problems...
Yeah I'm a bit dubious about buying the current N10 after one of the Google bosses mentioned about the new N10 in the pipeline, but I could be waiting till November for the new one.

I really like the Nexus 10, it's a very fast device, also has a nice battery life! Another thing I really liked is the screen and how good it is to use to watch Movies/Anime/Series/etc, I feel comfortable holding it. With Android 4.3 update my device became even faster and the freezings it used to have stopped.
I won't talk about iPad, as I'm an open Apple Hater, so don't discuss with me it, unless you want me to show my "other side" lol! By the way, I got my Nexus 10 after coming from Motorola Xoom, which was still a great device
I'm really tempted to get the 10... but November is really close...
What's the probability that the new Nexus 10 will be really released on November? 50%, 80%, 100%?

If things go as expected it's very possible . Check my complete comparison of it against Motorola Xoom, if it happens like the transition of Xoom to Nexus 10 you may have a good idea of what will happen, also it's a review I made, so you may find some info there.

I only bought mine today because I got a good deal 2nd hand. I would not buy one new at this moment in time. I wish I had got one last year but reading this forum maybe not getting one was a blessing in disguise due to the restarts and bugs in 4.2.
Looks like 4.3. may have fixed this so happy days!

Some crazy or serious people?

Need all you Nexus 10 owners feedback...

In your opinions...
1. will the next nexus 10 jump in price like the N7 did?
2. did 4.3 for YOU make any big differrences as far as lag? and battery life?
3. is it worth buying a used N 10 right now for around 315?
Thanks guys...
1. No. If anything the price will decrease because it's Asus.
2. I bought mine 2nd hand last month for £220 and 4.3 was just out by that time so I have no experience of 4.2. I can say that 4.3 is a great experience and super smooth. Battery is about 8 hours for me.
3. TBH I would wait till next month for the announcement before buying a 2nd hand N10. Wait to see what Asus have in store. They might even drop the price of the Samsung N10 like they did with the N4.

To answer your questions:
1. Seeing as the Nexus 10 is already a $400-$500 device and most high end Android tablets usually max out around this price point I don't believe the next Nexus 10 will jump in price.
2. In my own personal experience with 4.3, the overall experience feels slightly more fluid then 4.2.2 and my battery life has also improved on 4.3.
3. For this used Nexus 10 your buying is it the 16 GB or 32 GB version? That being said the Nexus 10 is still one of the best tablets on the market and still worth the money.

1 - NFI
2 - 4.3 made a huge impact to smoothness for me. While it was always quite quick, I used to still get stuttering when scrolling webpages etc, that is mostly gone now. I think its is mainly due to the implementation of TRIM in 4.3 which helped a lot. One leftover anoyance that is still around and can happen from time to time is the reloading of the UI when closing/switching apps
3 - I think it is the best tablet out there, it is still better than anything else out there almost a year after its release
I have a bit of an addiction to having the latest model. With my phone I sell my old one and buy the new one. I think the tablet market has got a lot better for app support but don't believe tablets are there yet to upgrade once the next model is released. I will be sitting on this device for another year unless there is a significant reason to upgrade. This is a great tablet and being a nexus line looking forward to the os (kitkat 4.4)

I saw the news of the new N10 coming out but going to be manufactured by ASUS. The current N10 is manufactured by Samsung. I read of problems and issues with tablets made by ASUS. The specs on the current N10 are still awesome. Because of these, I just purchased by N10, refurbished from Walmart. It is a great tablet.

Currently have a Samsung 10.1 2014 ed, may switch

I bought a Samsung 10.1 2014 ed the other day and it is a nice device, however i am saddened by the lack of development that is currently has and that it wont probably in the future because of KNOX. I think my Walmart still has some Nexus 10s and i was thinking of going this route. I am huge stock android guy, currently running it since day 1 on my GS4. I have read reviews and things about browser lag but this was at launch and im sure rooting and running AOSP solves a lot of issues. I also don't feel like waiting for the Nexus 10 2 whenever/whatever that may be.
Any reason why I should not switch over to the Nexus?
EDIT- Now i'm seeing the LG G Pad 8.3 ....

Well the note 2014 seems like itd be better to me. It's got the s pen for notes and more ram. The gpad 8.3 is a good choice if you don't mind the smaller size. They also have a Google play edition so you'll have such android. I would switch for a gpad 8.3 if I could just to try something new though I'm perfectly fine with my nexus 10. I'll never use the S-Pen unfortunately. Now i'm really torn between Nexus 10 and LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play edition
I had a Note 10.1 2014 for about 12 hours but sent it back, it had a malfunctioning backlight that's too common. I was going to root it, Knox or not, after a few weeks once I had established the hardware seemed ok so it was less of a risk voiding the warranty. I returned it and decided to go a used N10 route.
I didn't think I'd use the S-Pen, and upon playing with it more I pretty much confirmed it. I thought that, even not using the S-Pen, the specs themselves were worth the upgrade over the Nexus 10. And, if you're not afraid to root and take out a ton of the crap, run a different launcher, it may actually be. But I have fairly sharp eyes and could see the Pentile subpixel arrangement, and after already being indecisive about dropping that much on a tablet I was going to ruin the warranty on, it just was too much.
As an alternative to Walmart you can go the Amazon route. They have been up and down on their prices and were generally at the $400 mark until pulling back up to $450-ish. I know our Wal-Mart still has the Nexus 10 at full price, so going the Amazon route would save you a little bit of money. As I posted in another thread, if you're willing to go used you can get a far better deal, usually in the low $300's for a 32gb version.
There is also the Asus Transformer TF701. It has its own list of shortcomings but might be a viable alternative if you don't think you'll be bothered by them. It's priced new at $430 now.

I told you the note would be better. It has better specs and it's newer. The only thing bad about it is touchwiz. But it's also costs much more than the nexus 10 (100 dollars right?) So you should probably switch back unless you want to try the lg gpad which looks really appealing

I am going to return it to Walmart today, it was $499 for the 32gb, they didn't have the 16gb. But yes, the LG GPad GPE looks so sexy, but i was on an iPad mini yesterday and i don't think id like the smaller screen. Think i'll stick with the note.

Well that's good choice. How big is the I pad mini though? I don't think the 8 inches is too bad. You can try checking out the normal lg gpad at the store since they're the same mostly besides the software.

Ipad mini is 7.9. For me, anything between 4.7" (or other reasonably sized phone screens, reasonably doesn't include 5.5+) and 10" is a waste of time IMO. I had the OG N7 for almost a year and liked it for playing games because it was easy to hold. Other than that, I hated it. The screen is entirely too cramped and I might as well just be using my phone. The 8" tablets are only moderately better.

Hello
I lost my ultra few weeks back! tried tracing and all no luck. Now back to business of buying a new phone.
1. I am still bent towards Ultra (6833) - question is what and how long is the future for it in terms of support / firmwares etc.
2. I dont see a comparable newer devices which I can opt - I like xperia z ultra pretty much and inclined on it having used it of more than 6 months. - Z2 etc I have seen, but screen size andworkable area that impresses me
what other devices are possible better - pls dont push me for HTC or Sammy

If updates is important and you love the ultra, check out the GPE edition. I'd say sony version will have support until Sept 2015.
If you're looking for something updated with a big screen there are lots on the horizon...
Huawei MediaPad X1
Huawei MediaPad X1 is the lightest...awei-mediapad-x1-phablet via Engadget Android
Nexus 6 is being released soon, produced by lenovo.
Lumia 1520 if you fancy a change from android.
Loads of Chinese newcomers from Huawei, Oppo and others.
The blackphone looks promising also if you're interested in security.
...to name a few.

Lumina had a look - a bit heavy, no option for screen mirroring - its pretty much useful a useful feature for playing media. No inclination to Huwaei - never really liked them yet
Screen size and display resolution is one aspect I am looking for - but not a firmware upgrade which I would love to have but low priority.
4.4 will do well for a year as any newer upgrades will take looking at current trends at least 9 months.
7" + sizes a for sure no-no for me. Didnt see Nexus 6 specs yet since its going to be launched later this year - Aug / Sep
6806 or 6833 - I dont see a real diff except GPE - Sony stock works fine for me, no complaints. just need LTE..
You can get the Nokia X, laugh about it for about 4 months, throw it into a river and get the Ultra 2

Not so sure yet of ultra 2 :good: since still it is in rumor mill. Rather spend $$ on Nok x, would prefer to grab a something good and move on
was just wondering if any other devices are in line in coming weeks rather months. MWC didn't give any hopes
before getting Ultra this weekend, was wondering about any closer devices.

Hmm, the new HTC One is coming this month, but we've all seen it already and I'm personally not impressed by its design, but that's just me.
- Samsung released the S5 and that about it really. They have the Mega which they'll probably update soon, but it will still be a mod-range device.
- HTC is going to release the new One and Desire etc. No idea if they'll update the Max.
- LG released that.. phablet thing last week? Or? I'm not sure.
- Motorola has the G and X. No phablets.

Now that I see the Huawei MediaPad X1. being that I love big phones/tablet = phablets i'm wondering if there will be any support so that we can root it and all the good stuff that can be done with the ultra. specially xposed modules and other hacks I would buy it.

You'll have to wait and see. Don't buy it the day it comes out, but wait for a month or something so you can see if there is any dev activity around it.

Does look ridiculous doesn't it, I think 7 inch is a good size :sly:

I would not trade the quality of builds and materials of Sony phones/phablets with those of Huawei's... I think that in terms of these Sony is the top brand nowadays, like HTC was until a few years ago. Asus is also good imho, Samsung is far beyond and I never really liked LG products.

I agree that sony and the ultra have a better quality but i can't deny that this phablet screen is good looking with the same resolution as the ultra and much bigger careen and I like big phones. I love my ultra because of the screen I have it since it came out but if there is a bigger one... I don't know ????

today went around shopping - well didn't buy one yet ! believe me - didn't like any of the models out there, well S5 Z2 etc are yet to be out.
as you said, true the screen size is just perfect at present for usage - neither too big nor too small and the reason I am trying to stick to it.
will do a round of window shopping for another day or two and will get one - right now top of list 6833 or 6806. Nothing else  well I see a price break of close to $100 currently on ultras.
7" tabs are OK but not for regular use outside. have got sammy Tab Plus for 2 years now and got 4.4 - works like a charm. LG curve didn't like it.
Let me tell you something....I left Z Ultra forum long time ago. Change many phones....sold my last one which is LG G Flex (I bought it for $1100 from Korea)
and I come back to Z Ultra.

:good: gave up search.
will be getting one tomorrow or day after for sure Ultra. looking for 6806 or 6833, not finding in stores here. may pick one up on transit.
Lol.. this thread literally sums up my day
Received brand new 6833 after returning my damaged 6802 on warranty. Decided I could sell it unopened and buy myself something new.
Considered the options (much the same as those suggested here) and decided very best option is to unbox the new Sony beast sitting in front of me
(True story... )
