I'm curious if anyone else is or has experienced issues with ClockworkMod Recovery 5.8.1.8?
When I boot to recovery I see, CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4
I've flashed CWM 5.8.1.8 and then I see the version change but, if I reboot the phone or reboot recovery it reverts back to v5.5.0.4....
Any tips, tricks, or ideas?

hhmm..., Actually as I stated I'm using CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4...
While it's an assumption, CWM stands for ClockWorkMod?

No. Short answer, No.
Long answer, No, I just posted a picture of what i'm using. (did you see it?)
I'm rebooting into ClockworkMod recovery.
I then select install zip from sdcard
I then select choose zip from internal sdcard
and select the appropriate .zip file.
then recovery reboots into v5.8.1.8.
I'm not trying to use any app within the running OS to flash the newer version.
Is that clearer?

Okay that helps me out now that you finally answered my question, so you're trying to flash a newer version of cwm from the older version of it? Or are you flashing a rom too, I never worry about flashing cwm as all roms/kernels have a ones packaged in I feel it's unnecessary

yep, that's all I'm trying to do.
I've done the same thing to upgrade CWM on my old Atrix. So I'm not sure why it isn't working this time... Can't imagine the process would have changed.
I moved the .zip file to the external sd card and flashed it but that still didnt work. it didn't work when i tried to flash it with odin either.

Personally I would just leave it it isn't a huge deal, or flash a kernel that has a newer version

This isn't an Atrix and recovery on the GS2 is not like any other phone. You can flash that zip all day long its not going to do a thing.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that cwm is baked into the kernel. Without changing to a kernel with the new CWM, it will always come back to whatever the kernel you are running has baked into it.

Absolutely correct. Its not as simple as a good old recovery.img anymore.

Use the Siyah kernel and it has the touch clockworkmod recovery baked in. The others above are correct, it is something that has to be changed in the kernel. When the first touch recovery came out I too tried it the way you did by flashing it in regular cwm. Then you will see and can use it. BUT it does not stick because it has to he added into tue kernel.

It can he used the same way basically with using the buttons for volume +/- and power to select. Or clicking on whatever option, or sliding your finger up or down to the selections and double tapping to select. It is kind of a cool featute bit not that big of a deal. I am using my own personal made version that is basically the same as hos rom and you can use the siyah kernel that came/comes with it and it has the touch version of cwm so you can try it out. I dont usually spend much time while in cwm except to flash things. So it is not a huge deal or deal breaker either way.

My phone is rooted now and few friends here gave me suggestions of siyah and some...i want to know if I can directly flash the rom from stock recovery mode..i downloaded ROM manager, but it only has clockwork mode and cyanogen i guess.. can i do that using siya?
You need CWRecovery on your phone (sounds like you used a root method that didn't involve using a kernel with CWM if you only have stock recovery). Best way to get it is to flash a kernel that has it built in - Siyah, Dorimanx, etc, etc. There's a number of them; search the development sections of the board. Once you've got CWM on, you'll be able to flash any rom you want.

Siyah is a kernel, not a ROM. And no, you cannot flash a custom ROM from stock recovery. Search for rachmat3's rooting method and use that. Or flash the tar version of siyah or dorimanx via Odin.
ROM manager seems to have some issues with the S2. try to avoid using it as far as possible.
See which ROM you want to use. If it has the new Mali drivers use dorimanx 7.4 else use siyah 4.1.5

Siyah is a kernel developed by gokhanmoral. ROM on the other hand is also called firmware, you can flash them both in clockworkmod recovery, but cannot be done in stock recovery.
As for ROM manager, I've seen people brick their phone using it, so just stick to flashing clockworkmod recovery.

If you are using siyah kernel you can tweak the GPU steps and overclock your CPU using an app called ExTweaks. But note you are not going to get any serious performance boost, your machine tends to be what you have.
Hi,
I downloaded a stock rom from sammobile ( I9100XWLQ2_I9100XXLQ6_I9100PROLP4_HOME.tar.md5 )
I am pretty sure this is the right one because this has already worked once.
But now my phone hangs during startup. I wait really lot (10 mins) but still it hangs, even I always see the animation of 'S'
I flashed again a custom rom now, but i want a stock rom back. How can i flash?
thanks
You must perform a factory reset from the recovery. Either do it from the custom rom, then flash stock ROM, or flash stock rom, boot into recovery and then wipe /data. Order doesn't matter.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
After you flash the stock rom go back into download and flash v4 of Siyah kernel (.tar) , then boot into recovery and do wipe/factory reset.
It is not necessary to install a new kernel, just factory reset from stock recovery

I didnt say it was necessary, I just advised it since Siyah kernel is better then stock anyway for many reasons and since he's into trying new roms its much better to have custom kernel/recovery. Plus the fact that if user was to try flashing a 4.0.3 rom then wipe in stock recovery he would brick his device.
Not sure about brick, AFAIK brick occurs with 4.0.4. Anyway I would prefer more stock-ish kernel like CFroot.

Do you mean flash "stock rom"? Yes if you flash stock rom you will lose cwm and only hav stock recovery.
Once you have flashed your stock rom you should then immediately flash your custom kernel (Like Siyah). Once flashed reboot into recovery (cwm) and wipe data/factory reset.

When flashing a stock ROM (include kernel of course) it overwrite the exists kernel.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
When you will flash stock rom over custom rom everything will be erased if android version is different if same then you will face problems has phone will not work properly you have to factory reset it first install different kernel use philz it will root your phone directly and installs cmw then factory reset it from cmw.
You can also reset your phone from settings but in between you will face errors this that not working etc. use 1st method your phone will not have brick bug issue.
And for giving thanks use thank button

i know, but roms with custom kernels normally show what the kernel is, but it's showing version 3.0.8, even after flashing a different kernel it still shows as 3.0.8. When i flash JB roms it shows the custom kernels. So wondering if it's always going to be shown as version 3.0.8 or not cause i can't tell if the kernel i flash has actually been flashed or not.
Just use CPU spy app. It shows the kernel info

Do you get the features of the upgrade kernel? For instance, custom boot animation or back light notification or over clocking? Then you got the custom kernel.
Sometimes developers forget to change the description. That just happened in Flappjaxxx build #12 kernel.
Thats odd whn i flash a kernel it shows up

hi guys,
i tried to flash paranoid android, latest version. everything worked fine. after that i flashed gapps and the newest siyah kernel.
After that, my S3 shows only the s3 text and then nothing. The biggest problem is that the cwm is gone. But i can go to the standard download mode.
I need help to get the device running again...
I tried the following:
- flashed the stock kernel via odin to get back cwm - no sucess
- flashed the stock fw - no sucess - hangs now at the samsung text
Thanks in advance
flash the tar version of your recovery of choice through Odin. or format data from the stock recovery.
either way, it's only because you don't read. siyah doesn't support 4.2
R: [Q] CWM deleted, no Boot, paranoid android, siyah kernel
I believe before flashing gapps, if you booted up the phone, youre supppsed to wipe the cache: did you do that? If you did your gapps package might be broken or the kernel (check its the s3 version, which is a smaller version than the s2 one).
Try redownloading and reflashing everything (except paranoid android, if you know i does work when the phone starts up...)

then don't use any custom ROMs, because how do you know the dev will keep updating it? makes no sense whatsoever, stop confusing people
R: [Q] CWM deleted, no Boot, paranoid android, siyah kernel
That's not at all the same thing...custom roms change from one to another but a recovery needs to be solid, the thing holding all of your stuff together in the safest way possible. Of course i could trust a rom developer, but since android updates oftenly i will probably change rom just as often...not the same for recovery. Recovery needs to stay put, solid, stable, updated and trustworthy.
How can i know this philz guy wont make any new versions of his recovery after a month to come, or how can i know if i choose to switch to clockworkmod again because philz stopped development the backups will still be compatible?

PhilZ recovery can make backups compatible with CWM and TWRP. You can change your recovery any time.
and good luck being on stock.
actually, having an updated rom is more important than an updated recovery. recovery just needs to backup and restore to be useful.
R: [Q] CWM deleted, no Boot, paranoid android, siyah kernel
Yeah but i dont wanna miss faster backups...if they update i might miss it...cause philz doesnt have its own rom manager app...even though i prefer it to cwm.
