[Q] Touch response during charging - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Yesterday I purchased this awesome phablet but I found few bugs.
I already updated to 14.1.B.1.510
1) screen of death -2 times.(volume down + power key help me to reboot)
2) Touch response during charging is very weird..
3) I never saw such a ugly camera.
So I Want To Know Should I Replace It OR its software fault

54 views but no response. Friend please let me know this is hardware fault or software fault.
When I put my mobile on charging screen touch becomes less responsive.
Anyone facing this problem
Please reply me it's very costly mobile...
And is there any permanent solution for SOD.( screen of death)

1. Try ticking the optimized backlight setting, or turn off adaptive brigthness, or factory reset, or repair via pcc. Or claim warranty.
2. No not for me, still sensitive enough I don't see noticable difference when charging. Try charging it in different place (other than your home or something) or try using another charger.
3. Yes, downright ugly.

2. I remember reading about a lot of Note owners having trouble with the touchscreen while charging. Not sure if it got fixed through an update, but it never got mentioned again (as far as I know), which has to be a good sign?

From the first day it was reported no one truly knows whether it was software or hardware. Firmware update seems to make a lot of reports die down, but not all - making it likely to be software. The trigger seems random and varying it suggests it could be hardware for some.
Hell, no one knows. I never had sod in my old fw (461 and 475, but I used it only for a very short time) but on 510 (wiped clean) I do experience occasional "fake death" issue, but I only need to press the power button two times max to wake up the device. So well, maybe its not even sod.

My previous phone was huawei with amoled, and the sensitivity while charging was very bad. Turns out every device was like that. My zu isn't, clearly. Wonder if the OP's case is really that bad.

I currently use the Galaxy Note 1 running on Jellybeer (custom ROM) and will be going for the Ultra LTE (100% sure no backing out.. lol)
2. Weird touch behavior while charging is present on the Galaxy Note.. I am using my Original charger + Cable and I notice that it is not really sensitive whenever I use it while plugged in.. Worst is at the middle and gets better as you go out to the edge of the screen. (problem gets amplified if I get into skin contact with anything that has direct contact with the ground)
I suggest trying out a different cable or socket as it seems like your body and the charger gets grounded to earth somewhat.
Try using your Ultra while touching the wall or standing barefoot on cement and see if it gets worse..

Xperia Mini Pro Capacitive Button Problem

Hi I was wondering if anyone has the same problem as i am having right know.
I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini pro White SK17I. It was working well untill when i tried to press the back button. I had to wait for so long to get a response from the back button. I tried the same thing with the menu button (Not the physical hone key) it still had the delay. The delay is about 5-10 seconds. Sometimes, you have to wait extremely long or you have to press it again. sometimes it runs normally. But rarely it does work as normally should. I only had the phone for 2 weeks. I was wondering if i can exchange it since i have a 12 Month warranty. thats all the problem I'm having right now
thank you
Me too but not always i discovered that it depends on memory usage.

me too..need to press harder..but not usually like that..most of the time, it works normally.
same here..just to make a point, did you have the noise problem as well?
I have the same problem. I think has to do something with the temperature/humity. If its warm outside and i have sweat on my fingers its happens, when its cold and dry everything works fine. I tested with /dev/event/input and with wet fingers it does not even trigger any events.

I got same problem with my Xperia Mini Pro back key. Every time it happened, I'll just reboot the phone and that problem is gone.

I got this problem right after installing NFS Shift. Now the back key often doesn't work and the Options key is unresponsive.
It is a known issue related with temperature, affecting more and more people every day (including me). SE is not responding, but seems a design problem:

You'll be surprised, but I do not have such problems

I rebooted, but the problem is still there.
my back key is okay, only menu key is unresponsive at all. i think this is because of hardware problem.
i bought it 1 day ago, though. gonna bring my phone to SE service center tomorrow.
Guys I fixed my problem. This guy on facebook had the same problem as I did. He fixed his and so did I. The reason it lags isnt because of the memory usage. Its some other reasons that I dont remember. Anyway, if you guys still need to fix yours, heres how. First you got to have cottons and a screen protector. The Sony one that you get from the box works. You have to apple one TINY drop of soap onto the cotton then wipe it over your display. Make sure you clean the buttons cause thats the priority. Make sure you cover the top bits. After you done that. Get your clean cotton and wipe it to get the soap out. DONT USE WATER. After thats done, make sure there is no string of cotton left in your screen. After you checked, apply the screen protector then its done. I just did mine today and its going well so far. Trust me guys this isnt a trap to break your phone or anything. I trusted this guy that told me the steps and it worked. What I am trying to say is just give it a go. If you did it like I did, I think you should be fine. I love my xperia again hope it works for you guys

I have no back button issues so far. I once had it slowing down but that was related to an application hanging so low memory might be related.
No problems here so far, but it seems like german phones don't have problems at all. Ive been checking amazon ratings all day long but no1 ever mentions problems with the button
Well some people have the problem. I just wanna help them.

Yea thats nice My guess is, some countries get worse quality phones :/
As far i have the phone the back and menu keys work very fine for me, in fact they are very sensitive... and works fast
I had no problems until the update to Android 2.3.4.
Now I can't even play a game for 10 minutes and it presses the back button a lot.
It looks like it can be related to the firmware.
-----------------
I've seen on another site that other people also are facing more heating after update to 2.3.4. Well, since overheating is related to the issue, it may be possible that it is causing the back button issue for me.
Its Due to Memory Blocks aswell
The Problem is mainly due to too much of moisture in your hands...
to get rid of the problem, wipe off your hand of all moisture, and clean your cellphone screen and the buttons with a soft cloth.
And also remember to clean the used memory. usually its both the problems occurring at the same time, due tio which it seems no to be working..
hope it helps
I've had this problem too and I found out that the cause is the sweat from my hands.

I beg to differ, but my German Mini Pro does have the back-button-issue!
Don't know if it's due to sweaty fingers, I'll try one of these capacitive pens some day.
But I can say, as soon as I plug in the power cord, the button is working again.

touch screen issue

I just bought a archos 101 g9 when it was on sale on woot last week and so far it is working pretty good, however I have an annoying problem with it.
If it has been sleeping for over a few minutes (regular sleep, not the deep sleep) and I wake it back up the touch screen goes crazy. The bottom left corner keeps detecting a touch event. It will cycle from multiple on/off touches a second to one on/off every few seconds. If I rotate the tablet to portrait, it will start scrolling the screen none stop to the left. So far the only fix is to do a reboot.
It does not happen every time, just occasionally when I wake it up from sleep.
Today i got a case for it, and whenever it is in the case, the touch screen goes crazy. Same touch events in that same area.
I am guessing something is wrong with the digitizer. Anyone else seen this problem before?
Have the same problem, and as I've read on xda and archosfans forums, this isn't an uncommon issue. We'll just have to wait for a firmware update, as rebooting seems to fix it, so it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem.
Sent from my ARCHOS 101G9 using Tapatalk 2
I have exactly the same problems.
@ARCHOS: PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS BUG !
Sensitive Touch
I have similar problems with the touchscreen. If I'm holding it with one hand by a corner, it detects touch. The rest of the time it is a little jittery and releases or double taps in games. It's still not a deal breaker, though.
I hope we don't have to swap digitizers to fix it.

I'll give that a try and see if that works. I just got a case and as soon as it is in the case it is even worse.
EDIT: I installed a calibration app on xda and it really made it worse!
What app are you using to calibrate it?
I have a similar issue sometimes.
For me the fix is simply to clean the screen.
The strange thing is, it happens even when the screen doesn't appear to be especially dirty but I put the tablet to sleep, give the screen a serious clean with a microfibre cloth and the touchscreen issues vanish.
Could be a different issue to what you guys are having but the symptoms are the same and it's an easy 'fix' to try.
Hope it helps.

Thanks, I had not noticed that area in the settings before. Recalibrating it in the cover has helped a lot.
I pretty much had this since day 1......
The current state is ; it doesn't work at all then all of a sudden It will pop back into life and then pretty much go "mental" as already described, I also found it reacts poorly to minor temperature variations, i.e going from outside to inside and general day to day travelling. Recalibrating used to "help" but now has no effect.
From watching the debug logs part of me thinks it's a bit of both, hardware and software ( just a hunch ) I noticed the driver fail to get a "ping" response from the hardware a couple of times.
I've pratically given up on it myself and plugged a keyboard and mouse in via a hub on the full size usb...... The hub has now stopped working for some reason , I'm now on a OTG Keyboard with a Virtual Mouse Driver using the numeric keypad and some adb input trickery ,
I've got another touch screen/digitizer to plug in, just not got round to putting it in yet and a little part of me is starting to enjoy finding more elaborate ways of interacting with the device...
Does anyone know who the OEM of the digitizer Unit is? My previous investigation led me to china but information seems to be thin on the ground with this one

Touchscreen becoming unresponsive while wall charging

Guys I have a strange problem with my lumia 920 (unlocked India version with portico update). I purchased it 3 days back. When I use the phone while it's connected to the wall charger sometimes it's touchscreen becomes unresponsive. Then I have to lock and unlock the phone using the power button after which everything again becomes normal. This happens quite a few times while charging.
Other than the above mentioned problem my phone froze once for which I had to do soft reset.
I want to ask is this happening with me only or others are experiencing it too.
And is there any solution to it?? Should I take it to Nokia care??
Thanks in advance.....

That's weird. I remember my HTC Titan's screen became unusable when low battery, screen just didn't register any input. You should call Nokia Care.

Are you using the original Nokia charger or one by another manufacturer? I'm having a similar issue with the screen only stuttering behind my finger but only when loading it using the Samsung Charger that came with my SGS2.
That's pretty common I guess. My Titan, HD2, Galaxy W, Xperia S have all had this problem when charging with a BlackBerry charger. Could be an incompatible charger or damaged one. I suggest you immediately change it so you don't damage your device.
I had the same issue with the 920, was replaced by the store I purchased it in.
Thanks guys for the suggestion...

I think you should to change the charger because i was same problem when i used the china charger to charge my galaxy s3
I think this is pretty normal.. i had this with all my capacitive touchscreen phones... i think it has to do something with the electrical grounding when you charger is connected...
Try to disable USB Debugging - that helped for me with another phone.

SOLVED - Xperia Z Ultra - LCD Screen Issue while TURN ON - New Problem - UPDATE 8/15

I've had my XZU for a week now, everything has been working fine so far. Nonetheless I've noticed lately that when I turn it on I will see like a curtain or shade of colors from the top down up to half of the screen (it's like a flash, quickly disappearing), apart from that it will resume from sleep fine and no other issues, nonetheless is weird that this is happening now after a week of usage, I hope is not a symptom that something worse is about to happen. I have attached a Youtube link to a short video I just recorded.
NOTE: I do not think is a software problem because I booted the phone is "safe mode" and the exact same thing happened. It seems like a hardware issue that gets worse over time, because at the beginning happened once out of 4 times I turned it on, now is once every two times. I do not see a very good future with this phone
http://youtu.be/1ZucFrMvg_w
UPDATE 8/15: All my screen issues have been fully resolved with FW .475
So we have our own thread for the curtain now.
Sent from my C6802 using XDA Premium HD app
I think the issue is Power Management related, let me explain. If I turn on the device after being idle for a while (device is COLD) there will be no curtain issue, but if I turn it OFF and then ON right away (device is WARM) it seems the phone is entering a power save state and is not ready to be powered on again and that's when you get the curtain issue. The result seems to be very consistent with my explanation.
What I do not understand is that why this problem started happening after one week of usage, I thought it was application related but after my "safe boot" mode where no new applications are running only stock apps and I got the same result it can be application related. Also I thought that maybe the Stamina Mode had something to do with it, but it does not.
My last theory is that there is a piece of hardware that is getting degraded over time and when the phone is warm it will produce the curtain effect, if that's the case this is really bad, because the whole phone could stop working down the road. but it's just a theory.
Oh man
My experience with similar LCD issues has been around poor connection between the LCD screen and the motherboard. However, I'm by no means an expert on this.
I would definitely be claiming under the warranty for this.
I spoke with the vendor in Singapore and told me this is a known problem by Sony and they are working on a Firmware update. They suggested to keep the phone until the FW will be released in September and then decide if I will exchange it or keep it. The vendor also extended the Return/Exchange window until October so I will have enough time to test the phone after the FW update.
It's good to know that Sony has acknowledge the problem and is working on a solution.
Any chance Sony will do a firmware update to resolve this?
So it might be a firmware issue? I sure hope so
Sent from my C6802 using XDA Premium HD app
UPDATE 2
I think the problem is Power Management related, because if I leave the phone idle for 5min and then I turn it ON it will happen the issue you are seeing on the attached video. But if you turn it OFF and immediately turn it back ON again it will be fine. I think what is happening is that after 5min the phone will enter into DEEP POWER SAVE. The threshold to enter power save mode is around 15 seconds. I would say is something that should be able to be fixed with a Firmware update, but my only concern is why this problem did not happen during the first week, that behavior makes me think it's a Hardware problem that developed over the first week of usage, meaning a defective device.
NOTE: As you can see at the beginning of the video the phone has been Factory Reset, so there are no third party apps and anything wrong on the configuration.
http://youtu.be/vgnILc3ib8M
Mine did it the first day. I noticed it did it about 3 times that day. And I agree with you it might be the power save mode. Hopefully it gets resolved.

My Z Ultra does exactly the same thing but it does not worry me. Seems to be a software glitch that should be easily fixed.
Mine happens when i am taking calls and i turn the screen on or off. Other times it is random but normally when i have been using the device for a period and then turn the screen on and off quickly after using it.
But yeah, i do not think it is an issue to worry about. If it was serious, surely the screen would be having issues a lot more when it is on and not under these specific situations?

If it's a software problem how is it possible that during the first week the phone worked fine?, even after a factory reset the problem will still be there, that means (to me at least) that a hardware issue develop during use for the first week and now it cannot be recovered

Yeah that's what i expected but wanted just to know if others had the same problem and if there was already a workaround for this
Many people have this problem, including a number of reviewers.
Nevertheless Sony refuses to acknowledge the existence of the issue. When I called them, the guy said "You are the first to report such a problem". (Probably he lied and was advised "from above" to say so...)
The customer is left in the cold!
Some people have a return policy - what if one waits for a software update, the return period expires, the update comes, but it doesn't fix the problem and it turns out to be a hardware problem??
The information politics of Sony and other companies (yes, Google, you too!) is an absolute PILE OF S**T!!
Yup, me too. The annoying thing it is difficult to document. Yesterday my tablet was charging and I turned the screen on using power button - lock screen didn't react at all to my inputs. Tried switching screen on/off a few times but it didn't help. Also tried double-tap to wake with no success. Went to get my camera to document, then of course it started working...
I've written this elsewhere, but this is how I notice the touch screen problems:
For me the tablet randomly doesn't recognize touches during the below instances. In all cases either going to the home screen and relaunching the app or turning the screen off/on will solve the problem. The problems occur several times per day but not constantly.
Sometimes opening apps will cause everything but the bottom android-buttons to be non-responsive. This can happen in any app it seems, including native ones such as Google Play.
Sometimes the lockscreen doesn't recognize touches at all.
While charging I've had issues getting the touchscreen to recognize touches, disconnecting the charger has helped.
Double-tap to wake seems to be very moody, sometimes working sometimes not. Sometimes it turns the screen on even by me just holding the tablet with my palm resting against the screen.
While not a bug per se, also the android-buttons seem very picky that you have to hit them right on the spot to work.

Damn ! i'm not alone....
One forumer said he thinks that switching OFF Stamina mode helped a little bit...
I don't have my tablet with me, can someone test this ?
"A little bit" help is NOT enough.
The touchscreen MUST work perfectly, whether with Stamina Mode on or off or whether with Mode XY on or off. No discussion.
Sony HAS to fix this.
Already solved in .55 firmware

The same experience with Z1 compact and support. Told them the camera is really broken - they told me there is absolutely nothing wrong with the camera and I'm the first one who got this problem. That was some weeks before, now they officialy added that maybe some devices are defect.
But that´s Sony, they give a **** about u, don't even try to contact the support.
I'm also having this issue, if I'm using the Sony sleve it's impossible to use the touchscreen as it will tip over when I press hard enoug for the screen to actually register it.
No problem here.
Only early days yet. The only prob I've got atm is Dropbox isn't showing up in the Album.
Edit: Fixed the Dropbox problem by using the Dropsync app.
I also seem to get this. The tablet works fine when tilted at an angle but for some reason can be completely unresponsive when it's laid flat. Would this suggest a hardware issue or a software bug?
I also get this, sometimes it's like I just need to press harder (so hard the tablet falls over when using the cover as a stand), but other times it seems that no matter how hard I press or how many fingers I apply it doesn't register a thing for periods at a time.
I'm lead to believe that this is either software or firmware considering the intermittent nature. Are there any custom ROMs out yet that we could flash to eliminate the software aspect?
I have same problem, most noticeable in Chrome, switching tabs fails to register 10% of time. I can only think Sony have a hardware quality control issue with the digitizer as if it was firmware related, surely everyone would be suffering. Strange none of the reviews have picked this up, but I'm going to have to return mine.
No, no, no.
It's most surely a firmware problem!
The electric current threshold for registering a touch is set too high. So if the tablet lies on a non-conducting surface, and especially if it was not touched for a longer time, there will be touch problems. Also touching the tablet with a fingernail will not suffice because nails conduct current worse than skin. Other tablets which have a lower current threshold also accept fingernail touches.
I'm very sure: If you hold the tablet with one hand and touch with the other (and don't accidentally use fingernails), touch will be OK! Right? This is because more current will flow.
The .55 firmware which is out for LTE devices already and will follow for WiFi devices lowers the threshold and thus fixes the problem.
Up to then always take the tablet in your hands when operating it.
Interesting theory, just gave it a go, inclusive, but does seem worse in case. However if Sony aware, why have they not rushed out firmware as otherwise initial user experience is ruined.
QUOTE=hasenbein1966;52005720]No, no, no.

POTENTIAL FIX FOUND (ROOTED ONLY)!
Rooted users can try this fix, works for me! Touch seems to work perfectly now, also when tablet not in hands and lying on non-conducting surface!

/system/usr/idc/clearpad.idc
and alter these two lines:
Code:
touch.pressure.scale = 0.0001
(original value: 0.1)
and
Code:
touch.filter.level = 1
(original value: 2)
Don't forget a nandroid before
Please report whether it helped! :good:
P.S.: just for the curious - on the first Tablet Z, the two values are also lower: touch.pressure.scale is 0.0074, and touch.filter.level is also only 1.
Thanks for suggestion but dont wish to root (I use it to watch Sky which wont work if rooted) - seems there is more assistance on this forum to the issue than from Sony. I'll give it another week for a firmware fix before returning it.
elaborate...

If this is fixed in the 55 firmware then how do you get it?
I haven't had a firmware update?
I'm using 16GB Wi-Fi only in the UK

My bad, didn't read all the way through, ignore me.
Now after a few days I can say:
With the root fix described above, my tablet works like butter. Simply perfect. :good:
Only instance where I have still problems is when the tablet was lying around for a while and I try to operate the touchscreen without taking it in my hands. Then sometimes (not always) the screen doesn't react, but only for a short time.
The problem seems to be related to static electricity.
