Where is my internal storage on AOSP? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I'm currently running cm 10.2, and I'm curious as to why the device is still only showing 7.8gb of available internal storage. I understand that the /system and /data partitions still take up space, but I didn't expect it to limit my storage that much. Any light that can be shed would be greatly appreciated.

Your partition sizes are set and cannot be changed. Stock TW is huge so needs a lot of space. Flashing an aosp ROM doesn't free up any usable space. It just takes up a smaller portion of your system partition. Your data portion is also set to like 9±gb. Nothing you can do actually change that.
Sent from my Galaxy S4

you have to understand there are many factors at play here
1st no memory in the market actually has as much space as it advertises: your 16gb s4 probably has 14.7 actual GB of usable memory
2nd unlike the good old days (s1 thereabouts) when system memory was the system's only and your stuff went into an included but external SD card; your 14.7 GB need to be used for the phone's vital functions such as boot, kernel, drivers, recovery... all of which take up space
3rd your ROM will take up room too: tw is huge but don't be fooled aosp ROMs also take a good chunk even though the download sizes are two worlds apart this is what you're seeing on the top line (system)
4th your apps and downloaded apps will rob your system storage: there are some apps that still need to install stuff inside the apk itself (which goes in your system memory rather than your "SD card") which is partly what you are seeing on the bottom (data) line
5th ROMs install apps themselves too: cyanogenmod asks you to install gapps (gmail, g+, hangouts, calendar.....) all of which will take up lots of room specially if you set them up. there are many apps that are HUGE yet vital for the phone to function: like Google play and play services. but your rom will come bundled with all the default apps you see on your drawer the first time which will take up most of that (data) space

/data and /sdcard share the 11 GB on the phone, so I'd gues you have a lot of apps or some very large ones. :good:
EDIT - Before I get corrected, /data uses all the space, and /data/media gets fused to /storage/sdcard0, and THAT gets sym-linked to /sdcard.
I had the same thing happen to me. Found out that astro filemanagers cache was over 7 gigs. Cleared the app cache and instantly had my space back. Still don't understand how it happened but was easy enough to fix.

Go thru settings>storage, and run the cache/app cleaner. If you are still having the issue and you have deleted big apps that you don't use. Delete your titanium backup files. Only do a TB right before you flash a new rom. Also if you have multiple nandroid backups, those are about 1.3gb of data each. so do the same as TB. delete backups and only make a backup right before you are about to flash a rom. Takes a lil bit longer if you are a avid flasher, but saves space this way, and always ensures that you have a fresh backup to restore to.
So I went through and got rid of some and I am still well over 6 GB. The reason I am trying to clear space was for recovery so on to my next question when backing up through TWRP do I have to back up data or can I just back up my system

Get a usb-otg cable from amazon. Use it to plug in a thumb drive to your DNA. The newest versions of TWRP support usb-otg so you can backup or restore from a usb device. It saves you from taking up 2-3gb on your phone. Here is the cable I bought

The point of an SD card ?

Or use something like ES File Explorer File Manager from the Play Store or am alternative browser like Dolphin. ES has a downloader that is one of the choices when downloading a file from the web. In the ES settings you can set its default download location to the external card. Dolphin lets you pick the download location at each download. The TouchWiz camera and some others let you specify where to store photos.
Also, Titanium backup and other backup apps let you back up to the external card.
And most important of all, especially if you are crack flashing TouchWiz ROMs, keep your TWRP or CWM backups on the external card. They can be 2 GB+ each if you don't use compression, and not much better if you do. I have a 16 GB Nexus 7 and its a constant battle with backup space. I usually keep one solid reference backup and my latest only. I would love to be able to throw a 64GB card in it.

Storage Space Issue on HD10

I have been getting an "insufficient storage space" warning for months now...need to get it resolved.
I am rooted, on HD10, ME7 with Safestrap 3.65
Storage settings shows the 16GB total space, with 7.70 GB used under miscellaneous files, the majority of which appear app-related
I have no photos, music or other files on the phone
Apps were installed to internal, not card (which is 8GB)
Is it as simple as slash and burn some apps? Move a bunch to the card?
I also keep getting Samsung apps automatically reinstalled after deleting - not sure why

Well it sounds like you should at least try moving everything you can to the external card. You can use apps such SD Maid to clean up the phone and see what you're biggest files are and where they are. You can use Es File /download manager to make sure all your download are also going to external card and you can use Folder Mount to point pretty much anything you want to external card as well. So you can try things like that and I bet you'll be in good shape.
I do all those things and I have about 9 gigs free at all times in my 16 G S4

SD Maid says I am using 834MB out of 0.97 GB, leaving 16% available - could this be what is generating the message?
Ext storage shows 6.55GB used / 14.4 avail (54%)
Internal storage shows 6.07GB used / 9.70 avail (37%)
I also get Samsung apps that continue to download after being deleted - ideas for that?

Well since you're on a rom slot you still have your stock rom taking up space as well so that is why you're running Into this. You can either make that slots sizes bigger and reflash or move everything over to your external card ya know.

Yea sure if you're considering moving to that why not. As far as what size to make the slot I'd jump over to the Safestrap thread and ask someone opinion there. I've always kept my slots on the default sizes and had no problems so.. SBREEN always suggests doing a full Wipe and then fresh install so I wouldn't dirty flash.
Right now unless you just don't want Knox which I suppose is understandable, there's a safe root method for 4.3 if you wanted to move up and get on HD12 too which is what I'm on. It's debatable at best if it's worth staying on 4.2. They're currently working on kexec support on Safestrap 3.71 /mj7 base so maybe one day we will have more options. Hyperdrive is really the only stable option right now anyways. That's up to you though.

Good news is that immediately prior, by deleting a few system apps i no longer get the message. If that is correct, and based on you telling me that with both HD and stock roms I will continue to have this problem, what would you suggest?

Well any rom slot you create is just using another piece of your internal storage space for all that roms system apps and data and any other apps you may download. So you can eat up 1 or 2 gigs pretty quickly on a rom slot if you're not careful that's all I was getting at.
You really shouldn't have a problem if you get rid of apps you don't need, move the ones you can to your external card then have all your downloads, music, pictures whatever else pointed there as well.
You have a ton of apps?

Presently have 65 since fresh download from playstore after wipe. Doesn't seem excessive. Since it seems related to system apps is there a way to cull clutter there without screwing stuff up?
Going to HD12 seems a bit beyond my comfort level. Is upgrading from 10 to 11 any big deal or do you follow the same steps?

Well I don't think it's the system apps in particular. Everything you download whether from the play store or the Web goes directly to internal storage unless you change that. Add those things in with the actual rom itself and your going to eat up internal space quickly.
So again move whatever apps you can to your /ExtSdCard.
And get rid of the ones you don't need.
Move all pictures and music to /ExtSdCard
Get something like Es File manager which has a download manager built in that way all the downloads from the Web go to external storage as well.
Finally if you read up a bit on Folder Mount you can move even more things there.
Upgrading from 10 to 11 shouldn't be an issue since 12 is the one you need to upgrade firmware and Safestrap for.

1. Download HD!! onto card
2. Reboot into Safestrap
3. Select Rom Slot 1 (has HD10 now)
4. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
5. Wipe cache and dalvik cache
6. Install Rom
7. Pick Safestrap Kernel in Aroma (DO NOT check the reboot step at the end, instead navigate back to module file)
8. Flash ME7 Module.zip
8. Reboot (First Boot may take up to 10 mins)
9. Let Phone sit for 10 minutes
10. Reboot again

[Q] Device Memory - Internal Storage Doesn't Add Up

I noticed that if I add up the size of the files in my device memory, it comes out to be over 16GBs, but I still have more than 1GB of available space. I have attached screenshots of this. Does anyone know how this could be? When i install a large app, the app space goes up but the available space does not go down. I'm on MK2, rooted and running Hyperdrive RLS 14 via SafeStrap.
I don't know if this is the problem but I know my phone will show memory usage for things I have downloaded but already deleted.

I don't think that is the case for me since I know I have downloaded more data than is showing under the Downloads section. But thanks for the response. I usually move the downloads to my external SD card after the download is completed. Speaking of which, I wish there was a way to download directly to the ext SD card.

Often you have files which are linked from one folder to another, so adding things up won't work.
I use the "DiskUsage" app to display what's consuming space.

My wife's RAZR Maxx is really dragged down here lately. I removed almost all user apps, but it still is bad laggy. My question is this, since the phone is probably never going to get another update, can I go in and gut all the preloaded apps to free up system space?

If you can root it you can fix it. On my RAZR maxx I root with saferoot, install safestrap, cyanogenmod 11, titanium backup, nova launcher, 8sms. With that setup, use titanium backup to move as many apps as possible to SD card. A few will have to remain on phone memory, e.g. nova launcher and 8sms. Phone should be silky smooth. There are plenty of tutorials for rooting and getting CM running. The rest is just apps from play store.

I should add: speedup comes from making space on phone mem.
Nova keeps apps on SD card from disappearing from home screen.
8sms fixes problems receiving mms. Gotta fill in some MMS APN settings within the app then reboot to see effect.
Titanium backup gets the apps on the SD card and requires root. Just using the app manager in system settings to move to SD card is a subpar implementation of this.
