[Q] No sound all of a sudden - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have BL unlocked and rooted my Atrix. I was on the NoAttachTrix ROM. All of a sudden, there is no sound all together. No ringtones, no notifications, NADA. I thought it was just the speakers, but plugging in the earphones also doesn't help. (Similar to http://www.atrixforums.com/forum/rescue-squad/9226-no-sound-all.html?)
Tried different ROMs - No go.
Tried Wiping system, cache (Dalvik) and data - and installed new ROM. Still no go.
Any ideas? Has anyone hit this yet? Would reverting back to a stable AT&T ROM help (Mine was the ATT version). Everything else works, it's just the sound. I'm not sure if it's hardware/software. But my guts say it is the software..

Unfortunately I cannot help, but I have a similar problem.
It started for me after upgrading epinters cm10.1 in early august. The earpiece stopped working. First I thought of a hardware problem (I had a defy before) but the earpiece came back for short time after a full wipe, then went mute after a few calls. I went back to noattachtrix ROM but the earpiece still is not working. Now the speaker has no sound, but sometimes, when i use a different app to play a tune it comes back and after that all other software using the speaker (like instant buttons) work too. Until, you may have guessed it, the speaker refuses to work again.
I don't think it is broken hardware, it is more likely a problem switching the hardware on and off.
Anyway, I was not able to find a solution - I need help - thank you.

Maybe if you try to return to stock it might get up again

In another forum I found a solution for the speaker. Twist the phone like a wet towel and the speaker will most likely come back. If it fails again after a few minutes you have rotten contacts and need either a new speaker or clean the old one.
Worked for me.

Update. I bought a new earpiece which comes together with the front camera and put it in. It was really easy to do. Took me less than 10 minutes. Everything works, only the earpiece stays mute.
The problem seems to be on the software side.

In call volume doesn't work

Hi people, I'm having an odd problem and I can't fix it. I was using a MiUI rom and my in call volume started to fail, from time to time it decided to stop working. I thought it could be because of the rom, so I installed a cyanogen one. It worked at first but then, in a few minutes, same happened.
After that I installed official 2.3.3 and same results. Then, I installed 2.1 and the in call volume worked for 2 hours, when I installed other rom, and another two hours or so... But next morning the problem was there.
I must say that speakers and headphones works perfectly, the only problem is the in call, I can't hear anything from the phone, just speakers and headphone :S
Do you know what could I do? Or the only solution is to send the phone to SE? I think installing all those roms proves that it should be a hardware problem, but I don't understand why when it works it sounds perfect. It should work or not, but not sometimes!
Thanks in advance

unresolved microphone issue after USB flex replacement

Hello,
I have a major problem with my lower microphone (on the USB flex board), the microphone does not register much sound at all (very faint sounds are possible if you scream as loud as possible into the microphone directly).
I have replaced the USB flex board (properly, everything is connected correctly and the USB port works perfectly), but the microphone is exactly the same...
Anyone have any ideas? It seems a couple of people have similar issues, has anyone found a fix yet?
Also, does anyone perhaps have any ideas about how to force the top microphone (speaker phone mic) to engage as the active microphone during regular voice calls? I am 100% sick of using speaker phone for every voice call, especially considering I need to make private/confidential calls for work :\
and yes, I have removed the rubber housing as well and tested it without it, it makes zero difference.
Youve tried to repair it on rhe cheap and failed.Maybe take it to a repair shop and get it done properly.
And from your other thread, the spare one I have here has part no gt-i9100 rev2.2(so maybe the one you bought is still faulty )

So you've followed me to my thread because I made a post you didn't like in another thread, and offered complete shinfo.
Please, do not post again.
I am a fourth year EE student, I know how to replace a minor circuit board correctly.
Anyone who has any real advice, specifically about whether or not this may be some form of software issue, and with regards to my question about using the other microphone in voice calls, please let me know.
My mistake-I thought I was replying to a poster named Bodurr as he made a couple of threads about mic problems aswell.
He replaced the board and its still not working.
And I see what you mean about the other thread-I can assure you I never twigged it was you.
Anyway,if you require help, its advised to state what rom etc your running. That way someone could say "if your rooted make a nandroid backup then flash stock rom and see if problem persist".

I'm using rootbox ICS rom version 1.7, android 4.0.4 with siyah kernel v3.4.
Have made a nandroid backup and reflashed to stock a couple of times (including stock kernel and then CF root kernel) and nothing makes any difference.
The issue started whilst on gingerbread and has now carried on to ICS...
I'm seriously completely stumped and have no idea what is causing it :\
I've had a quick look and its advised to test using voice recorder to eliminate a hardware issue.
Other thing mentioned was to change audio values(but maybe need to be on GB to access and change values in the *#197328640# menu.
I don't know if you've done this already.

Just tested again with voice recorder (first time I have done this since swapping the USB flex board) and it's exactly the same issue.
There is SOME sound, but you need to have the volume on full with your ear right against the speaker to hear it, and it's still very faint like that.
What a bizarre issue, it seems no-one knows how to fix it either :\

experiencing exactly the same issue, replaced the USB flex and now have no microphone pickup on voice calls / voice recorder apps.
using ICS so not got the service mode audio options available (says BLOCKED)
don't know where I've gone wrong? maybe the part wasn't exactly right? I got it from here > http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=251069751004
Heres someone that lists a seller and he says he has no problems.
Same here

Up here, anyone found solution for this issue? I'm experimenting now the same problem with microphone after replacing the USB flex board...
Thanks
Yeah, got the solution. It's actually the board/flex cable itself. Took me three boards to find that out. There is a lot of b-ware boards on eBay that were actually thrown out by Samsung because they did not pass QC. Just get a genuine spare part and your mic will be fine.

damn, i got the same then... its gonna be hard to get a proper board... I was thinking maybe, it had some kind of security by solder like lasers...
There's a little difference between 2.2 and 2.3, a single resistor, could it be?
Also, can't connect USB in Mass storage...

Hmm some people are saying 2.3 won't be compatible. Was your phone originally 2.2 or 2.3? Also how do I tell if it is genuine? If it says oem?
Why wouldn't it be compatible. A higher revision number usually suggests that something has been improved. BTW I initially had a 2.2 sub circuit board, now it's 2.3.
Well the new board should look like the old one. I think I took a picture the day I switched my board out. I'll try too find it later.

I'm looking at two 2.3 models. One seems teal colored the other is a dark blue. Which one is the oem? Actually which color is yours?

The second one looks just like mine. But the OEM part actually comes with a grey mic enclosure. Make sure your part comes with it.

Liquid ICS 9/9/12 Bluetooth issue

HI all,
I can't post in the Dev section yet so I will ask here. I installed this ROM last night and it all went well except for today in the car while testing bluetooth I have no audio unless I switch the source away from Bluetooth and back (say, set it to Speaker then back to BT). I did a full wipe again and re-loaded the ROM and still have the same problem. I am using the .19 radio if that makes a difference and my car has the older (2008) Ford Sync system (2.1).
Is anyone else having a similar issue?

This seems to happen quite a bit. It's a semi known issue from a number of cusom ROMs. Have never seen a solid fix for it except what you just described. Some people have this problem and need to competely turn it off and back on to get it to work! If it truely is a dealbreaker for you (it shouldn't be...not that big of a glitch), best bet is to stick to a ROM closer to the original tbolt software.
Its not that its a dealbreaker but it kind of defeats the purpose of using handsfree in the car when I would have to pick the phone up and switch BT inputs to get it working. I had a low Bluetooth volume problem with a rom before which was fixed with, I think, a different radio but I never had this one before. I noticed someone else posted the problem in the official thread so hopefully comes out if it. Thanks.
So this happens every time u get a call, or only every time you connect to the car?
I haven't received any calls yet while connected to BT but it happened when making calls and it seems once I do the toggle to get things working then it "sticks" and works thereafter. I haven't tried reconnecting while in the car to see if the fix would stick afterwards but this morning when I got into my car I tried making a call and it worked great first time and I know I rebooted the phone multiple times last night with doing backups of the rom, etc. Maybe it somehow worked itself out or maybe it's just an intermittent thing. I didn't change anything since the install.

Headphone was not working now both headphone and speaker work at the same time...help

Oh boy, it has not been the smoothest ride so far with my first Sony phone but I still love it.
So, I am running the OTA 257 rom (shows as model 6806 though in about Phone but my phone is C6802) after I changed to 532 (6806 version) to root.
I just tried the headphone jack and it was not doing anything. Tried another headphone and same thing.
Restarted and now it works BUT the speaker also plays sound. I cannot find a way to stop that. Or sometimes the headphone wont work...frustrating. :/
Maybe related to it showing 6806 rom?

Have you exposed the minijack to water? It sounds like a software issue since it worked after a reboot, so you got a lot of different ways to test this, but the question is: Are you willing to potentially spend a fair bit of time on it? (re-flashing, resetting etc.)
no water at all, just got the phone. Yeah it did work both at the same time when I tried app sound force or something like that to control where the sounds goes so at least is not dead.
I am more than willing to flash etc. I will be doing other ROMS today to test likely anyway.
Okay. Keep me updated!

Speakers

I realised that one of the speakers (right from the usb c port) has some distortion. I was hearing some shhh noise during playbacks, not too strong to make it very obvious. If i listen directly each of the speakers, the spesific one has clearly this additional shhh sound. It can be heard even clearer when you reduce the media volume to minimum during playback, the only speaker producing some sound is that one (only noise shhhh). Any suggestions how that be fixed ( if that is a software issue), otherwise probably my only solution will be to take it for service.
Thanks in advance

First, I would see if noise is present in headphones. Then I would do a factory reset (ugh, I know) to see if that fixes it. Given that it's only 1 of the 4 speakers, I'm willing to bet it's hardware, not software, but I would do the above to rule it out. Good luck.

I had this fu**ing problem but with other speaker in left of usb c port.
But after flash this rom، the problem resolved :
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-tab-s3/SM-T825/BTU/download/T825XXU1AQF3/175242/
I put all 4 files (ap & bl & csc & ..) in the odin fields and after flash tablet reseted to factory settings.
If you want flash that rom, before it , backup your tab infos and data.

Sorry for upping this very old thread, but the same is happening to me after latest stock system upgrade via OTA. I wrote a comprehensive post on Samsung Community where I also summarized:
Code:
1. Static is played at everyboot up and whenever a sound is played
2. It only affects speakers
3. Issue is repeatable and present in safe mode
4. Deactivating OK Google reduces the static but it is still there
5. Every app is up to date
6. The only thing I can think that could have introduced the issue was the latest system update
7. Tablet is new and never had been through any kind of damage
They told me that my device needs a replacement because they think it is a hardware failure, but I read many posts here and there blaming ACR and Skype where users solved the problem by uninstalling them (deactivating Skype on my Tab was not enough but I can't get rid of it without rooting) and you here saying it was solved by flashing another firmware.
So did you really solve the issue by flashing another firmware? What was the difference between the one you flashed and your stock one? (And just for my curiosity, did it include Skype or any other mic enabled apps?).
Thanks!
EDIT: Also see this thread by a user on Reddit. He also blames the lower right speaker. Are there any audio developers here who can tell us what's going on?
Mine is the LTE version. Is this happening on WiFi too?
This is NOT a hardware issue. This was introduced in the latest update. I flashed back to the F3 build and the problem is no longer present. Flashing back to the latest build reintroduces the problem..

This is a very important statement that also confirms what I reported to Samsung in the thread posted above. I had mine replaced cause I wasn't sure enough to void my warranty and flash a previous firmware, but now that I had it replaced (it's still boxed) I will make sure not to update.
Is there any way we can file a bug report to Samsung? The Assistance forum doesn't seem to be the proper way.
Unfortunately, it will probably come with the latest update already. You'll have to flash back

Guess what? It did. It came with QI2.
And! The same speaker is producing static.
It's definitely slighter then the one on the device I replaced, but IT IS THERE.
I copied your post to samsung Assistance forums and linked this thread. Hopefully someone will address this issue properly.
So, I caved in against my better judgement and bought a nicely priced, brand new Tab S3 from Amazon Germany (Wifi-only, SM-T820). It indeed has an annoying hissing sound when playing any audio even when volume is actually zero. It seems to come from all four speakers, but it's way more noticeable from the bottom ones.
It came on the QI2 firmware, but already tried downgrading to DBT QF3 and wiping cache/factory reset, with no positive results.
Anyone has anymore insights or updates on this?
Went to a Samsung store and they had two S3 to demo. One of them was on QI2, the other on an earlier firmware. None had this speaker problem. So, I ordered an exchange from Amazon and it's arrived today. It's on QI2 OOTB and it doesn't have this issue either, fortunately.
Sadly I have the same problem on my Tab S3 (on the bottom right speaker).
I've already sent the tablet to be fixed by warranty and it's returned with the bottom right speaker and the whole screen replaced!
Clearly the problem is still there as the hiss is generated by the amplifier and not by the speaker itself!
A solution for this problem

I had the same problem with the right bottom speaker.
After a factory reset the problem remained.
But at last by wiping the cash partition and factory reset at the same time the problem solved.
Now I have android 8 on my tablet without any distortion in that speaker.
