is the headphone jack on the bottom. While I was listening to music is was hard to type with the keyboard. Anyone else feel this was a bad placement of the jack?
But that is all so far, I'm really liking this LG device.

I prefer my headphone jack on the bottom because I naturally put my phone in my pockets (back or front) upside down.
Many people prefer it on the bottom apparently. Something about going head first into a pocket as the most natural way to stow it. Personally, I could care less.
I agree with jonathan, the headphone jack on the bottom is infinitely better imo.
So I guess noone types when they are listening to something with headphones lol. Maybe its just me then, not really complaining. Its minor, did I already mention I like this device. I dont even mind LG's ui, didnt even install my nova launcher. Prefer it tons over touchjizz.
Yeah I hate it. It's awkward at gym to put on machine has to go upside down so cannot use screen.

I'm excited about it. Haven't seen that feature on a phone since the hd2.
The head phone jack is on the bottom of the iPhone 5. Maybe that is why I hate it lol.
I thought the bottom was dumb until I started plugging phone into car stereo, plus power plug. It is pretty awkward with a cord coming out top and one out bottom. But other than that, I would prefer on top.

Nope. The bottom is where the headphone jack should go.

Surprising good earphones...normally free ones are crap except for sony walkman ones but these are decent.
Anyway, are these hands free...i figured that thing was a mic but its not working...wanted to know if mine was busted or is that not a feature..
andd the lil click button that may or may not be a mic, i noticed it pauses my music....which is semi useful, what would be great is If clicking it would get it to go to the next track! is there a way to do that??
Those headphones have a mic, so yes, your might be faulty... Try to insert the headphones using a little bit more power. That was the problem for me.
To change the track to the next one, click the button twice. If I recall correctly, triple click changes the track to the previous.
And about the quality... Unfortunately the headphones from my previous iPhone 3g are much much better. I'm not so fond of their visual design, but the sound quality (especially when you surround them with the cheap aftermarket foam) is miles away from Samsungs.

Hi Prime users,
I'm a litte surprised there are no threads about this here.
I'm pleased with the general audio quality - feels a little like force feedback in games
BUT
I am totally irritated by the fact that the audio only comes from the right edge of the Prime. This is really driving my ears crazy.
What about you? Use headphones? External speakers? Got used to it?
I'd just like to know how you think on this one.
Regards,
pintness
It bothers me as well.
I didn't care really.. I agree that it would be better to have speakers like the TF101 (1 on each side).
I love the sound quality, but yeah it is uncomfortable unless you watch videos in portrait mode.
it bothers me a little bit. Mainly when I'm playing back something with sound and I can barely hear it due it's single speaker blowing out from the back.
From a design standpoint, ASUS should have at least included the left speaker on the left-bottom of the Keyboard Dock. It would have made more sense, making the tablet whole with it's keyboard dock accessory than not including no left channel audio at all. But oh well.

But... why would Asus do that? I mean, if they put in stereo speakers, why not put them in correct place? This looks like a really poor design decision to me.
If only they would put more effort into function than design...
I have an Acer Iconia A500, which has stereo speaker on the back, too.
General problem with those is that treble sounds aren't reflected well and you can't hear them at all, except when you hold the tablet in that ONE special position and form a cone with your hands.
At first it really bothered me (coming from the TF101) but now I can manage...
The quality IS a whole lot better compared to TF101 though, making up for it. Still really no idea what they were thinking here though.
I agree...weird but it is excellent quality.
I am more bothered by the fact that the speaker faces away from the user instead of towards the user. This means that most of the volume the tablet can put out is wasted unless you have some kind of sound reflector behind the tablet.
I know this is common among thin touchscreen devices, but to me it never stops being a source of minor annoyance.

therefore it is NOT stereo but mono.
Come on, that's audio 101. If it's outputing both left and right channel from one single speaker it's NOT Stereo.

There are two speakers ... they just are side-by-side under that single perforation.
Lame I know, but ....
What I would have liked is to have the dock have speakers integrated (facing "up") with some separation.
That way, the tab alone could service headphones, but when docked and sitting open, it would have a better stereo experience without headphones.
definitely found it pretty weird for awhile but used to it now.
If I'm on the road, I use my headphones to block out sound and avoid annoying others.
If I'm at home, I'll plug it into my stereo speakers. If I ever use the built-in speaker, it's probably for unimportant stuff that doesn't really require good sound quality.
Never a problem
Posted this elsewhere, but I haven't seen anyone mentioning it, so perhaps it bears repeating:

This is sort of a tangent, but if you're just holding the Prime and viewing/listening to something yourself, the way you hold the Prime can make a significant difference in how loud it is. The speaker is right at the right hand edge, if you hold it where the speaker is, and sorta cup your hand around the speaker grill, you can direct the sound to reflect off your hand and bounce it towards yourself.
It works surprisingly well and there's no need to install/root or whatever.

Official cover
The thing that annoys me the most is that if you have the official Asus origami cover and use the flat slightly angled fold, it covers the speaker. And yes I agree that having the speaker face away from the user is a bizarre idea.
I found it hard not to cover it when holding in landscape, but once adjusting it actually sounds pretty good.
I think the quality is pretty impressive. Maybe a benefit from B&O working on their laptops.
I've found if you hold it in the right hand landscape mode then with a certain position it reflects the sound so that it appears to come from the left too.
To be honest if watching a film I would probably switch to headphones.
I noticed the same thing on the iPhone. Both phones have their speakers on the bottom of the phone. What does this mean? When you hold the phone in landscape to play games and grip it in gaming grip, the base of your forefinger (first finger) covers the speakers and muffles the sound. I noticed this a lot playing games on my old iPhone. Speaker should be on the back ideally or on the sides.

Thank you for your wonderful useful tip. So I am only allowed to play a game with sound when I plug in headphones. Great practical advice from you! I like to see you hold the phone with the headphone plug digging into your finger too! I know because I made a mockup of the phone and held it in gaming grip.

The speakers are on the bottom of the phone on either side of the USB port.
It would be more practical on the back but in terms of design it looks uglier. That's why they put the speakers on the bottom. My Atrix has its speaker on the back and it is much better than when I had an iPhone.
Speakers never bothered me on the iphone 4s when I had it for 6 months so I don't see it as a design flaw here. I am terribly concerned about the size and weight though. I know that the older Lumia phones are thicker but it definitely does not look that way. The 920 looks HUGE and that is saying a lot since I currently have a GS3.
I hope that my concerns disappear after handling or I might have to get an HTC 8x, which I really want to avoid after owning two crappy HTC One X phones.
Personally I kind of like the thickness. Gives it substance. I have held ultra thin phones and think that I'll break them. Speaker placement to me doesn't matter as long as they sound good. I just hope it's more water tolerable than the L900. Saw the torture test on c|net and it wasn't pretty.

No, tboy is right. They are on both sides.
The 800 also has the speaker on the bottom. It doesn't bother me since I have a light grip on it when I play.
Anyway I think there are always some problems with the placement of the speakers. There is just no perfect solution. If you put it on the back then some people will complain that the sound will get muffled while it's placed on it's back e.g on the bed or the couch. If you wanna put it on the side then you are forced to put one on both sides but most windows phones have 3-4 buttons on one side and adding a speaker would make it look really cluttered and one may end up being muffled again. Top has the same problem as bottom and front wouldn't just work because of aesthetics.
I personally think that the speakers on the bottom are the lesser evil compared to the other options.
The speaker is placed on the bottom is actually a good idea.
With the iPhone it was placed on the bottom due to the alarm, so that the sound would not get blocked.
I always place my phone (s3) upside down just to hear my alarm better , Since I'm a deep sleeper.
The Lumia 920 has no flaws. It was designed hand manufactured by the hand of god. Just kidding. Speaker placement is actually very fine with me. It's more of a preference issue that you brought up. Cnet's torture test of the 900 shows that it will die from water. That should be an indication of what to expect. Then again, it's the only phone I know that you can hammer a nail with and still be fine. The 920 is supposed to be even tougher. So if my phone drowns... At lest I'll still be able to fix thins around the house with it. LOL. Most indestructible phone design I've seen so far was the Galaxy S3. Survive a washer cycle with ease.

Yes or No and why. I'm on the fence right now and really wanna know what it's like walking, sitting down and operating a huge phone.
If you can operate a Note 2 you can operate this phone. It is a bit hard to use with one hand but you can with some getting used to it
I would trade 1 handed use for screen any day. How often are you stuck with just 1 hand to do everything? 3% of the time maybe?
I am very comfortable using the phone. I thought size might be a factor but it's not. It is a pleasure to use.
I would imagine using it as a small tablet is comfortable, but are you guys using it as a phone by itself? As in holding it up to your head? Or do you pair a bluetooth device to make calls?

Yes, I use it as a phone holding it to my head. I bought a bluetooth device thinking I would use that as a handset but it remains unused.
Are there any issues with the other side hearing you? While on my note 2, if I'm not talking in normal/loud voice, the other person may complain they can't hear me very well (or maybe it's just this particular restaurant in specific). Since the XZU is so long, it'll go WAY past where your mouth is.

I don't have the largest hands and I can type in landscape with very little effort. It is hefty, but since it's so slim, you don't really notice. I've made a few phone calls and I'll admit, it looks strange, but doesn't feel unnatural.

No issue for me, if still comfortable for me.
I can make calls with it no problem. No need for a bluetooth device at all unless you want one.
My biggest concern actually is using the phone as a music player. The audio jack is on thw side so it might be too tight on the pants. And while driving, it might be impossible to switch between tracks with one hand lol
I wish android implemented swipe gestures on the screen to wakeup. Its almost effortless and is an elegant solution especially if your phone is idle on a table top

Coming from iPhone 5, I need some adjustment to typing on this device. However, browsing websites and reading articles from Current and Buzzfeed is great, it has that book-reading feel to it. In fact, the big ass screen makes it a pleasure.
It's easy to hold with one hand but making phone calls made me feel awkward, and a little bit embarassed.
I feel like I made the right choice to return to android with this device. I wish it has tablet capacity battery though.

The audio jack on the side is ridiculous - sony did this on XSP too (sony seems to be good at spoiling decent devices ), especially on a "smartphone" this big :silly:
I'm also getting an XZU in couple of weeks, and if using audio cable while the phone is in my pocket proved impossible, I think the workaround is using the wireless bluetooth.. Sounds like it defeat the purpose of a fully-waterproofed audio jack, but some compromise must be made, huh
First look I worry about the size, now I love the size. Inside my pocket no problem for walk, sit and run. I put my note 2 and zu together with my jean pocket or short paint is ok. No doubt.
One hand operate no problem for me. Because I m the big hand.
When incoming call also no problem, answer without bluetooth. Now I won't worry the size only how to root my device.
One more think is this device suitable for male better than female. When my wife hold it look like holding a M16.

It was partly the size but more just its general handling, reaching across the screen even though I tried clustering stuff on one side of it. I had a Galaxy Note sometime prior & I got on with that reasonable well & though the Note 2 was bigger of screen I still thought I would be OK with it.

Yea I hate the Headphone jack at the bottom cause you have to put it in your pocket upside down, but it makes the overall appearance of the phone sexy (hiding all the ports at the bottom. Plus I would assume it helps with keeping junk out. It is also nice, as stated above, that the cord hangs down when in hand without putting stress on the jack.
Anyway just go bluetooth. You're just listening to music, not creating a mobile recording studio. G2 + $15 BT Speaker = Bliss
I'm pretty sure this isn't a DESIGN FLAW since it was actually created this way... on all 23 G2 Variants....
There are Pros and Cons for each way. No real winner. Bottom gets my vote since the Pocket Upright argument is the only reason for it being on the top.
I prefer it at the bottom because my phone goes in my pocket upside down.

What wrong with the headphone jack locates in the bottom?
I thought it is perfect and very well-thought.
In fact, placing the jack on the top is just plain stupid.
a. listening music where the phone in the pocket, who care it's upside down or versa?
b. in the car, on the phone holder, using headset, in the bottom. Perfect. Who would want the headset cord hangs around from the top?
c. Jack at the bottom and on way to the left is even better since it has no interfere with phone holder's cradle.
It's well-thought well-made device.
I like the fact that the jack and the charging port are both on the same side, makes much more sense this way, especially if you use your phone in your car and have a dedicated stand for it. No other phone of mine except the Galaxy S had this layout.
I love it.

with the buttons on the top back it makes perfect sense to put the headphone jack to the bottom, the phone slides nice in the pocket and the cable doenst get in the way at all. with this orientation it feels also more natural to press the buttons while the phone is in the pocket.
It's a little strange using corded headphones if I have my phone in a stand on my desk, but I picked up the Tone+ BT headset and pretty much exclusively use that now, so it's not much of an issue.

Most MP3 players, like SanDisk Sansa series (Okay, okay, we can forget Apple and iPods), have headphone jack at the top. Sometimes on the side, but not at the bottom. It's tradition. Not a design flaw at all from car manufacturer! Innovation! I will try to write with left hand tomorrow too and will blame pencils makers, because I'm in 85% population.

I like the headphone jack on the bottom, because as mentioned before - you put you phone upside down in your pocket you just take it out and have it in the right position to continue working/operating the phone - no changing of position required.
what i like even more - both the micro-usb port and the headphone jack are on the same side of the phone - that's something I was looking for for a long time now.
if u put your phone in a pocket with the top up. u have to rotate it in your hand.
this way it's perfect. just grab it and unlock
