I'm getting one for my mum but her tv only has av in(rca composite). Gonna use wifi.
So far I've narrowed down my search to these:
MK808c
http://dx.com/p/mk808c-android-4-2-...wifi-allwinner-a20-tf-hdmi-white-black-241974
B13
http://www.geekbuying.com/item/B13-...ual-core-1G-8G-BT-WiFi-Build-in-2-0MP-Camera-
With-AV-Port-HDMI-brown-314429.html
UG008B
http://www.geekbuying.com/item/EU-P...ore-1G-8G-HDMI-BT-AV-Output-RJ-45-314808.html
(needs cable, does this work? http://dx.com/p/4-pin-3-5mm-minijack-to-3-x-rca-composite-av-cable-1-25-meter-10633)
I think the UG008B is the best out of these.
Mk808c has a processor thats a bit slower and no external wifi connector.
B13 is so small it might overheat but it has a build in webcam and microphone which is a nice extra feature.
UG008b has a rj45 which might come in handy later on.
What do you think? Any other recommendations or comments on these devices?

Hi there. Im debating on the R42. Did you get it in yet? My biggest concern is Lan speeds ( Not wireless ). I was told in another forum that the CX-921 which also has the rk3188 only gets 6-7 Mbps while on a wires connection. I plan on replacing my core2quad rig as a server with a low power android solution.
Ill be running an SSH server, web server, DynDNS updater, Torrent, VNC, Maybe personal FTP - SMB Access, DLNA , and hopefully VPN when its available. Ive already gotten most things working using my Tegra2 Acer A500 so I know its possible. Servers Ultimate Pro is a pretty decent set of server tools. Primarily though it will be my personal web host along with SSH access from home as I use SSH with a port redirect to create proxies while at work. Network bandwidth is a crucial concern.
My issue on the Acer is the network speed ( And lags torrenting ) . It struggles keeping up with everything. I debated on a Lan to USB adapter, but I dont plan on actually using it for this purpose. My 4 year old wasn't behaving so I grounded him from it..... Testing things in the meantime
Ive looked at some of the RK3188 devices, as well as the Mele A1000G which has the allwinner A31 CPU paired with a SATA cradle on top ( A BIG plus but I am torn as I need something that will run 24/7 and be stable.
Thanks!!!
I ordered the kr42. If you want I can measure lan speed when its delivered.

what were you copying to and from? could be the bottleneck was the memory card you were copying to. a class 4 memory card will only give you max rate of about 4 mb per second.

Hi again. Could you do a speed test and see what you get? Im thinking tekweezle might be right about the maximum write speed of where you are copying to/from sdcard wise. Im more looking for bandwidth capability so speetest by ookla might show me more specifically. Thanks again!

Hello everyone,
Just thought I'd let you know that splashtop remote hd(the tablet version) does not work on the galaxy tab 10.1. the regular version does work though, which is really kind of sad. I don't know how you can make a tablet specific version of an app and have it be worse on tablets than your original version. Hopefully there will be an update soon...

I hope there's support for higher resolutions. My desktop is 1440 x 900 I hate how splashtop changes the resolution when connected to android.
Market now says Galaxy Tab 10.1 is supported for Splashtop HD
and there's currently a 50% discount ...w00t!

I have yet to try over another wifi network but I can almost watch hulu vids when tethering over my Vibrant on 3g.
So my guess is it will work fine over a real wifi connection.
At home I was watching both netflix and hulu flawlessly + playing Civ V... for me this is an amazing app and well worth the money.
Do you know if someone can use the desktop while I'm using this on the tablet? But for $5, I'll just get it in either case.
Works pretty dang good on my tab now. Worth the bucks, and fun to play tricks on my GF from the other room when my computer opens up a word doc and starts typing to her... lol.

Well the point of remote desktop is to use your actual system will at a different location. So the other person will be able to use the computer, they will just be messing with whatever you're trying to do . I "tried" it the other night with my laptop and it seemed alright. Tried playing minecraft but that requires a keyboard+mouse to be playable but it was fairly smooth. I'm sure netflix and hulu would work fine.
You should be able to remote desktop to a computer on another network as long as you set up the router for that computer to do so (port forwarding, I believe??) I think there are instructions on the splashtop website for doing just that.
Sale over ?
It's still on sale, I just bought. Using it now and it works amazingly well (over wifi), far better than the other RDP clients I've tried so far. Next stop will be testing it's performance over the wifi hot spot on my captivate.
Five bucks already well spent.
Edit: works over 3G, but not super well. I suspect my mediocre upload speed is to blame. Afraid there's not a lot I can do about that right now. I'm moving soon, so hopefully my new place will have some better options for internet.
just thought i'd add i'm using this right now.. posting this reply.. from manhattan.. remotely connected to my pc in eugene oregon. i am tethering from my 4g tmobile and its almost as good as my wifi from home. Speedtest shows a 50ms ping and a 6- 8mbps connection.. I can stream netflix or stream movies from my pc and they are pretty darn smooth.. 5000 miles away!! Splashtop rocks!! I am using it on my ipad though.. been waiting for the hd version to be released before i buy a tab 10.1 since remote desktop is just about all i use... looks like its time to buy one.
gonna try it and see
I'm going to a part of Japan where there's more wired internet than wireless.
Can I connect my Galaxy S3 straight to wired internet? I have an OTG USB cable with which the S3 works fine with hubs, mice, keyboards and storage. I have a Hawking USB to wired ethernet (RJ45) adapter. When I plug it all together the adapter lights up green but nothing happens. Is this a software/driver issue and is there an app which overcomes it?
I'm NOT interested in lugging a netbook with me, or any stuff about tethering, or expensive 3G. I will take my Netgear wireless travel router WGR101 "hotspot" if I have to.
Mainly I just want to connect the S3 to an ethernet cable.
Thank you.
Mod
There might be a mod out there, i know the transformer tablets support this, but it will be intresting to find out...
My tablet connects to wired internet first time using its OTG connector and the Hawking USB/RJ45 adapter. It's a 7" Eken MB702C using Allwinner Tech Boxchip ARM Cortex™-A8 1.2GHz and running Android 2.3.4. If it can do it, why can't an S3? Is it hardware or drivers and rom? Thanks.
Have you tried using the usb tethering option?
It's purely drivers. USB-OTG has backward-compatibility to standard USB2.0 so it can use any USB-device it can provide enough juice for.
However the kernel has to recognize the USB device and load/activate the corresponding drivers. Then the uerland scripts configuring the (DHCP) IP-address and other settings have to kick in.
Of course ur right d4fseeker, but now what drivers to install? My kernel is 3.0.15 and I really want the eth0 (ethernet interface from cable) in backtrack 5 on my phone... so what can I do??? I have a usb OTG connector that works perfectly with mouses and joysticks but that isnt working with any of my two ethernet to usb (the ethernet to usb shows a light but on the s3 it doesnt show anything because the kernel doesnt recognize it) How to enable the recognition of the ethernet by the kernel ? WHAT DRIVERS?! Thank you.
PS: Does anyone know how to enable monitor mode on samsung galaxy s3 ive seen this post :

but it didnt work for s3 ...

Take a look at the SiyahKernel (www.gokhanmoral.com). It allows you to add additional drivers to the kernel, if it has not already.
the problem is finding the proper driver and build it to specs.
Of course, thanks for the link

I'm keen to see this progress too - but i wouldnt know where to start with compiling it into the kernel or inserting the mods. The drivers are present in the tablet builds - for example I have it working on the nexus 7 - so porting shouldnt be too hard. Just hope that one of the kernel dev teams has the time and interest to look at this......

You can buy an adapter on eBay, it is about the size of a pack of cards / cigarette pack. Plug the ethernet cable from the hotel into the unit and it then makes the adapter a wireless access point. I bought one about a year ago for exactly a similar reason - traveling to hotels where there is only wireless in the lobby, not the rooms. Unit cost be £15 / $22 - the link in my eBay account has now expired, but search away on eBay.

Here is a similar device - even cheaper than I paid - on eBay UK.

I'm personally waiting on the new generation of the HD Homerun.
The new HDHR4 should be coming soon (they said mid 2013 at CES), it is a network dual tuner that connects to your wireless router via ethernet ... you can then access the tuners on many different devices.
The new version is said to have a native android app, hardware transcoding and DLNA.. I can't wait, i will be buying it on day one.

The idea of HD Homerun is very interesting but I do not know if i will pay 100$ when my usb stick for pc costed 15$. I want a usb stick to be used in my house because i do not have a television in my bedroom or in my kitchen where i have a plug to connect a dvb-t.
I have seen a conceptronic device (CTVDIGANG) but i do not see any review and in the specifications doesn't say if it is compatible with our tablet. Has anybody tried this one (or other similiar)?

Well the biggest problem with that app is that it only supports Android 3.1, at least that's what it says in the description.
There is a TVMan app that seems to have good reviews but I don't know if you can use it with any dvb-t stick and I don't really know much about dvb-t sticks...
Edit:
There is also this app that seems positively reviewed for the most part:

It states only for 3.1 in English, that's what I read it in the first time, hence my comment. I find it very odd that he has yet to update the app to at least 4.0 if it works in any way. The only positive review he had was when the guy tested it at his house, when he went to work (where he wanted to use it mainly) it didn't work because he had to forward ports (I think that's what he said) and even then it still didn't fully function. It seems really really sketchy to me.

No, he didn't delete it. He jacked the price up to $6.50 and changed the name of it so he could get rid of those negative reviews and sucker people into buying his app. It wouldn't surprise me of he has done this several times before. Here is his new link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.goprasoft.dvbt
I am considering reporting him, I don't like to make a fuss but it was obvious his app was **** and didn't work at all and noe he has changed it to get rid of the reviews so he can make more money on people who don't know any better.
Edit:
Now it has changed from the app only supporting "android 3.1" ,which there was no 3.1 only 3.0, to only supporting kernel version 3.10.

DTV would be good but isn't having loads of wires defeating the object of have a small, lightweight portable unit? Out of curiosity I'd like to try with my USB DVB-T tuner but I don't think it's something I'd use all the time.
I set up a Mediaportal Server running from my main NAS which has a Dual DVB-S2 tuner. With a little messing I now have full live TV on the tablet anywhere. I got the 16GB wifi version so I use my phones 3G for it when I'm out and about. I also set up a web server running from the same backend that links into my Movie and TV show database. With Dolphin and the Flash plugin, you can get Live TV, Video, TV Shows and Music from your home server/NAS in a browser. The easiest way is to set up Mediaportal and MPextend, then just use aMPdroid on the tablet. It's not a 5 minute set up by no means but worth it in the end.

Oh yes I'll try at some point. Trying to find a driver that will run it will be the hard part. Maybe when the CM people and Ubuntu really start digging into these devices we may get a working one but up to now I've had no luck. I have a few old USB types to try so I'm not limited to Hauppauge.
I must repeat what I said before though.. With the tools we have these days, there's no point in having bits hanging out of any wireless enabled device. The benefits just aren't there. I can get any UK channel on my tablet nigh on anywhere that has 3G if I wish. I don't worry about DVB-T/S signal strength as it's fed from my home aerial or dish. And as a bonus I get my film and TV collection too. From what you guys have said, you have the hardware and the software for both PC and Android is free so you might as well put it to use until it can be tested direct in the tablet.... Or that's the way I see it
I'll let you know if I find anything out and we will see if we can get one in the tablet running.
Hello. Ive been following a few threads on here and was wondering if anyone has any first hand experience with LAN speeds on any of the Mini PC type devices. I could care less about the wifi as i plan on using it to replace my power hungry core2quad server. I figure for my uses, something with an RK3188 at 1.6 paired with 2Gb ram should perform well for what I need.
Ive looked at some of the RK3188 devices, as well as the Mele A1000G which has the allwinner A31 CPU paired with a SATA cradle on top ( A BIG plus as its supposedly a native Sata card and not a USB to Sata type ). I asked in another forum about the CX-921 RK3188 device and he said his Lan speeds were only 6-7 Mbps....... Definitely not acceptable for my purposes.
Does anyone have any thoughts, opinions, recommendations, or first hand knowledge?
As you can see by my history here, I am not a novice...... been around a while. Hopefully you dont see this thread as a " Noob " looking for what to buy lol.

Must be usb to sata internally. Still a nice design. Regardless...... a31 supports gigabit ethernet according to its chip designer. Im more interested in bandwidth / stability than sata. USB to sata adapters should still support 60/70 Mbps Data read rate. Thanks for the info though

Pyraxiate,
Let me ask you something - could you be able to boot the Android inside Mini PC without HDMI connection ? Because I also intent to use Servers Ultimate Pro inside my MK 809ii as a PC CAR to serve as collector and orchestrator of all things and publish the navigation and information via HTML5 server to an iPAD mini as console ... but I'm not able to boot it without HDMI + keyboard + mouse connection ... HELP

Hey,
I was thinking about an Android box thingy and there are many cheap options.
I would like to play around with some emulators (PPSSPP included) with a USB controller I have and watch some anime ^^ I'd also not like to spend in excess of ~$35 (max $45)
Any good cheap boxes that can do that? Preferably that support Lolipop since I love its UI.
I've seen ones with Amlogic S802,812 and 912 CPUs and RK3188 and 3368 CPUs.
Which one is decent? eBay links would be appreciated ^^ Thanks! (OpenGL ES3 support would also be nice.)
RK3188 drives my LighInTheBox mk809iv. It's got 2GB RAM, 8GB EMMC, a full sized USB 2 port, hdmi, microSDXC port, runs KitKat 4.4, comes with Kodi pre-installed. I rooted it with Kingoroot.com, so that I could run a vnc server on it. I remote control it with my phone which running the free Valence app, or sometimes I remote it with Screen Sharing on my Mac. It plays nicely, and I get decent enough Wifi speeds. It's run everything I have thrown at it. A quick search for mk809iv will bring up a whole lot of these devices, even some with 16gb EMMC. Some will arrive pre-rooted, others will not. Look for Realtek Wifi for best compatibility if you intend to flash it (which requires a PC). It is fun to play with, but looking back on the experience, I'd rather have had a small Android phone with MHL/hdmi-output, as it would have been much easier to set up if there was a screen on the device itself. Just a thought. Used Galaxy s3 handsets are getting cheap enough now, with the same functionality. Cheers!

Yep! Any suggestions regarding TV apps, websites with TV shows, forums for TV boxes and input devices? I don't really think the bundled remote would be something I'd wanna use. I've seen wireless small keyboards with trackpads, do you know anything about them?

The forum I use for my Android devices is usually XDA, right here.
I used a USB keyboard and a mouse to set mine up.
For the record, I rooted my MK809 IV, which has an rk3188 SOC running KitKat 4.4, with Kingo Root, to allow me to run a VNC server, because I use a free Android app called Valence on my phone as a wifi trackpad/mouse and use my phone's keyboard to type on the Android TV. Root allows me to use the free RemoDroid app to control my Android TV from my phone or tablets from anywhere in my house.
Kodi comes on mine, and it's a free app in the Play Store anyway. I tried to set it up last April, but it kept crashing. If you are into that sort of thing, it is a very capable media server for sure.
For playing local files, I think MX Player is the champion app.
I ultimately bought a Logitech k700 keyboard with built-in trackpad to use with mine - I purchased it refurbished on a Newegg special for fifteen dollars! I take that keyboard everywhere with me. I love it. I prefer to use an actual mouse, but since I bought the k700, I have not missed mice enough to actually plug one in. I like it because it is nearly full-sized, but still compact, and it comes already set up to use a single USB wireless dongle. Range has been great, and after almost a year I am still on the first set of batteries.
Just today I was looking into purchasing the remote that came with your TV box, so please, let me know if you like it.
I bought a Hubman USB 2.0 hub in case I need more ports. It seemed like a good idea to have it, but I have not actually plugged it into the Android stick yet. I'm sure it will support a mouse, keyboard & usb thumb-drive just fine.
I don't want to go too far off-topic, so if it's okay with you, I'll pm you a list of apps I use for video. Nothing seems to slow down my aging rk3188 quad. Your rk3368 octa-core is going to be fantastic! Would you please post a link to the auction? Even if the auction is closed, I'd love to take a look at the device. The price you paid is unbelieveable!

Now it's $40 : http://www.ebay.com/itm/262241520176?ul_noapp=true
This one is $37 : http://www.ebay.com/itm/RK3368-2G-16G-Octa-Core-Smart-TV-BOX-KODI-Fully-XBMC-Loaded-Android5-1-Lollipop-/172059715005?hash=item280f8ee5bd:g:mt0AAOSwGotWlLtG
China gadgets also has firmware updates for it! ^^
Thanks, I'd love a list of apps!
Thanks for the links! It's insane that we can buy an 8-core computer for forty bucks. So sorry that I haven't checked in for a while.
I haven't really been watching TV or movies lately. When I've had free downtime, I've been playing a roll-playing game that's called Skydoms. I didn't think I'd get hooked on it, but then I did.
How is that box working out for you?
