The phone will be up for a time and then suddenly show only that and become unresponsive. After a while, it'll reboot: the only way to power the device back on after that is to pull the battery for 30 seconds, reinsert it and leave it on charge for a few minutes. Once in a while it will crash during boot as well.
It happens several times a day now. Started a few weeks back, so I returned it to stock and removed the root access. That solved the issue, but it returned immediately after I rooted and flashed Slimbean 4.3 build 1 yesterday (previously ran 4.2.2 build 8).
If anyone has been able to fix something similar, I'd appreciate some tips. The problem has seemingly disappeared after having gone back to stock this morning.
TouchWiz...after getting used to the DPI settings in Slim...blegh :\

Okay, so I have two problems.
Since I've owned the phone, I've stuck to Stock 4.0.4 ROM as well as the Stock Kernel.
Only problems I've had is the occasional SOD.
But today, my phone went through two mind numbing crashes.
First, my Extended 3500 mAh battery stopped working.
I got the dreaded Hazard sign when i try to charge it, so I left it be.
But, I've never had a problem with the battery prior to today (I've owned it for three and a half months).
Secondly, I used the Stock battery for the majority of the day, due to the previous battery problems.
Well, about an hour ago, I was using the phone as I always did.
Nothing out of the ordinary.
Suddenly, I got a white screen.
I rebooted the phone, and all the settings had turned to default.
And I can't go into silent mode through the power button.
And the home button is absolutely useless.
Can't close open apps, go to the home screen, etc.
And every time I get to the home screen, the launcher crashes.
Any ideas on what the heck is happening?

Hello,
I have an international unlocked Samsung Galaxy S III (GT-I9300) that is no longer in warranty and that started behaving strangely (unresponsive) a couple of weeks ago on Android 4.1.2 (official ROM, rooted with CF-AutoRoot).
After reading several threads here on XDA I believed it was subject of Sudden Death. So I started with a factory reset and rooted the phone again with CF-AutoRoot but after that I still experienced the same freezes and started my mission to try and resolve this using whatever method was required.
I starting with trying the DFG app but to no avail. The freezing was provoked but did not go away after many days of iterations and freezes (it always recovered out of a freeze).
Next I tried the eMMC check app to verify on what version I was so that I could help my in further pinpointing the problem. It said I was safe, but while running that app the phone freezed again but this time the screen turned purple/pink and it did not recover from the freeze after several hours until I finally removed the battery. The purple/pink turned into purple/pink with black lines and after removing the battery I could not power on the phone.
In all desperation I started trying out different "SDS-safe" custom kernels, ROMs and bootloaders (all flashed using Odin on my laptop) but the problem did not go away. In fact, I discovered a very strange correlation between the time that I leave the battery out the phone and the time it takes before the purple/pink freeze occurs again.
If I wait half an hour, put the battery back in the phone and boot it (in whichever mode) it would freeze/flicker/die after about 20 seconds. If I would wait several hours, put the battery back in the phone and boot it it would freeze/flicker/die after a solid 1 or 2 minutes.
Whether the phone is connected to the laptop or not makes no difference. I also tried with a different battery but the same behavior occurs.
After waiting a solid day, in still in act of desperation, I decided to flash the leaked 4.2.2 (I9300XXUFME7) official ROM. But even after a factory reset and wiping of cache I found that the problem still remained.
Now I believe I've tried almost everything I've found on these forums I'm not sure what I can still do. It seems it's not battery, ROM, kernel or bootloader related and it also does not seem a case of Sudden Death (I never heard mention of the purple/pink flickering, and it also never snaps out of the freeze; also the strange correlation between battery out of the phone and time before it freezes is something I haven't read about).
From all the research I've done I've not encountered anyone with the same symptoms (does not wake out of freeze, purple/pink lines appear on screen when freeze starts and keep flickering for hours, there seems to be a correlation between the time the battery is out of the phone and how long I have before it freezes again when I turn it on) and I'm running out of ideas.
I believe it is hardware related (but not a screen issue) rather than software related because the USB connection with the laptop disconnects when it freezes, purple/pink flickering and no recovery; but I have no idea what options I still have.
Before I give up on the phone does anyone have any recommendations of what I can try before sending it to a Samsung repair center?
Attached are 4 pictures to show the typical process after waiting ~4 hours and powering on the phone:
Phone boots OK
The phone freezes and a purple/pink overlay appears
More and more flickering making the screen turn more and more purple/pink
The screen seems to be divided in 4-5 parts
Everything is pink and black lines start to appear
Thank you for your time.
I'd say you need a new motherboard or screen, possibly both - you've ruled out any software causes.
just had this issue
Did you find a solution, given the fact that this happened a long time ago?
I was watching a video and my screen turned pink like the 4th photo you posted.
Now it wont work, get the pink screen everytime is turned on.

Last night my phone started bootlooping very frequently. I was running the CM10 built with Samsung source that was posted in this section for a while with absolutely no problems, when suddenly the phone shut off and started doing short, quick vibrations repeatedly. Like the vibration that the phone makes when it first turns on and shows the Samsung logo. I pulled the battery but it continued once I put the battery back in. Eventually I got it to boot but soon after it booted it started again. I am now running Blackjelly v1, and though less frequent, the problem still persists...does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Mine did the same thing... It was crazy...Nothing I did fixed it... Flashed away at any 4.2.2 Rom and It was consistent bootloop... Decided to take phone apart and clean power button (read somewhere power button gets stuck) Same issue bootloop... I odined back to stock...bam it worked...now the capacitive buttons don't work... So after booting stock I flashed TWRP recovery and attempted to flash 4.2.2 rom to no prevail, I am only capable of flashing BlackJelly v1 any other rom sends me into (App is upgrading screen after boot after apps say Starting Apps bootloop) nonstop bootloop...
I honestly wonder if my phone is the only phone that will not accecpt 4.2.2 roms...

It's now bootlooping like crazy. It'll turn on for like 5 minutes and then go right back to bootlooping. My USB port is kinda screwy so it's hard to odin anything. I'm at a loss for what to do.

I had boot looping problems several times now. For me, it's always been sticky power button. One time, I forgot it had that problem at work and looped for 30 minutes. I just take out the battery for about an hour, then get the power button unstuck. My button gets stuck at the bottom of the button, so I can normally mess with the top part to fix it.
So the issue has escalated even further now. It is a sticky power button, i believe, but now when the phone tries to turn on it shows both samsung logos and then shuts right back off and refuses to turn on again unless i do a battery pull...I'm not even sure if it's turning off, actually. It turns on immediately after inserting a battery into the device. But right now I have a fancy brick.
Definitly a power button issue

My phone started doing a crazy bootloop just out of the blue last night. I have never had a problem. I took the battery out to put my memory card back in. I'd been using it for my digital camera. This is not out of the ordinary. I do it all the time. But after I replaced the card, battery and cover it started this continuous boot loop. Sometimes it will go to the main screen and allow me to perform some functions, but then it goes right back to the bootloop. I am running the Padawan JB rom. I did the complete wipe, factory reset and re-flash. But it still did the bootloop. The only time it does NOT exhibit this issue is when the phone is on the charger. Then and only then it works perfectly. Is it the battery? Why will it bootloop without the charger and work fine when on the charger?
It is probably your battery

The Note won't run without a proper battery installed. I had the problem where I swapped out my dead battery for a fully charged one (I do this everyday) and all of a sudden it kept bootlooping.I spent a few hours, when I got home, flashing it back to stock etc to no avail. I could get into download mode, and download to my hearts content but when I tried to boot the phone, it looped. Samsung, samsung, samsung....
I swapped back my, now charged, spare and BAM it booted into stock android no problem. I think my first (stock samsung battery actually) is finished. Or at least has some serious issues, and the phone refuses to boot with it in but my spare (Anker battery) works fine.
I hope this works for you's, it did for me

Also, if I had just charged my phone using my working battery, I would have saved myself some serious grief, and hours wasted. Here's to hoping you don't too!
Hey guys, i'm having problems with my GS3 i9300 which all started on Sunday. I'll try to list all the problems as best as i can and when they started and stopped happening.
At the time of this happening i was rooted and using the cyanogenmod 10.1.3 rc1 and was using it previously for the past month or with no problems and had not recently installed any new apps other than swift key.
Only problem on Sunday was i charged my phone over night for about 11-12 hours and it wasn't full charged and the notification light was red for some reason.
On Monday evening when i was driving home in the evening my phone started to beep every few minutes and it was a beep i had never heard before so when i took a look at the screen it showed the driving mode symbol which i think was like a steering wheel (didnt know it was even on cyanogenmod).
That happened for about 10 mins until i restarted my phone.
Then i got woken up by my phone about 3 times in the early hours of tuesday morning because it just started to play my music for no reason so i tuned it off until it was time for me to wake up.
All through tuesday my phone would keep turning off and back on at random or sometimes if i recieved a call or sent a text or changed a setting but not always and this happened every 5-10 mins or so so when i got home i updated cyanogenmod to rc2 but the same thing happened and at one time it crashed as i pushed a button and the phone was vidrating until it rebooted and went into safe mode (the first and last time it went into safemode with these peoblems) so last night about 11pm i went back to stock using odin and again it keeps turning on driving mode and s voice but only when its on charge.
Sorry for the long post but does anyone know what could be happening? Like i have said i have wiped the phone and changed the rom and even went back to stock and unrooted.
Thanks.
I think your phone touched "bad" memory blocks damaged by EMMC bug, that's why it's acts like obsessed but it will stop when it's will be completely damaged. So I suggest you to take it to warranty service center.

If you are on a fresh 4.1.2 stock rom and the problem only happens on charge then first try another charger & lead. If it is still the same then sounds like a repair is required.
My phone has been working fine for the last year and a half regarding hardware and battery. The device itself has never given me any issues and the hardware is in pristine condition. Roughly three months ago I bought a ZeroLemon battery and case and have been using that since. The battery is also in great condition (no warping or expanding) and the case still looks brand new. BUT today when I went to use my phone (about 20 minutes after I unplugged it) I noticed it was off, and it will not turn back on at all. It will load the splash screen (it's rooted and has Xposed framework installed) but after one or two seconds it shuts of immediately. Somehow I did get it to boot into TWRP and I was able to make a quick backup, disable Xposed, run a quick factory reset and fix permissions. I flashed Cyanogen M12 and I thought everything was working fine (I was running M12 before and have been running Cyanogen for as long as I can remember.) but after 5-10 minutes the phone randomly shut off again. I have looked into this issue all day now and everyone that has had a similar problem has had battery issues. I have tried 4 different STOCK batteries today, as well as my ZeroLemon one and nothing has gotten it past the splash screen again. I am almost certain this is NOT a hardware issue but I have no idea what would cause it in the terms of software, since I haven't changed anything recently. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to let me know. I'm looking for immediate fixes right now, so sending it back in or getting a new phone are secondary options. If you have advice just let me know in a comment or PM me, thanks guys!
Edit: At this point I can't do anything, ie: enter recovery, get the splash screen, enter odin (anything) it's like the battery is dead but the same exact battery works just fine in my friends phone.
Have you tried downloading the MDK full wipe tar, flashing it with odin, and using loki to root and bypass bootloader again?
So it turns out - after I took it apart - it has a defective power button. The actual piece that is soldered on. I don't know how to go about fixing it from here
Kind of strange but my device did the same thing today. I have tried multiple batteries with no luck. Will boot but then turn off before it reaches the boot animation. When I try to enter recovery or download mode it does the same thing.
Have either of y'all found a fix yet? My phone has the same issue (turning itself off after about 2-3 seconds after the boot animation begins).

I think he said it was an issue with his power button.
