NFC isn't working on our devices unless you download a Kernel that supports it. It's still iffy even then. Even though we have it on our phones, it's not active. It looks like ATT holds the key to open it for all. Entropy has gotten it work on his device and released the kernel to utilize it although I can't get it to work on mine.

NFC should work, I am also running UnNamed, Entropy and got it working.
Though I can't do much with it since Google Wallet isn't working on our devices, I am waiting for this so I can start using it.

I"ve got all that too but I can't get NFC tag to read anything. I enable it in settings, open up NFC tag, and nothing i've tried reads. Like you said, it's not good for much right now other than show but it would be nice to see it actually work for possible future use.

I am able to scan anything that's nfc capable, but since there are no apps available yet, you're right.. there's not much use for it. Frankly i'm surprised that the chip is activated in our phones (on certain roms) but theres no app available to do anything other than simple nfc diagnostics. I guess it comes down to the 'secure element' that has to be enabled before we can actually store any nfc-related info on our devices. As it stands, I have two NFC capable phones, with no NFC capabilities Sometimes being on the cutting edge can be frustrating I guess..

Almost all of these terminals support Paywave, Paypass, and whatever American Express' contactless payment system is called. Your friend was probably using the Mastercard system, as that's what Google Wallet supports at the moment.
Well, just bricked my NFC somehow after flashing a Rom and I guess something didn't reset even tho I cleared out google wallet, precautions, etc.
That's neither here nor there tho. I just want to know if anyone has had trouble exchanging a rooted phone at best buy?
Please give me some suggestions. While google wallet is pretty much a gimmick, I like to be able to have the gimmick. Lol. But if I am stuck with the phone then that's okay too.
Edit: I'm still within 14 days of buying the phone...

Does it brick the NFC function or just google wallet ?

NFC secure element not responding. So basically just google wallet is broke as beam will still work. Neither feature is a necessity for me, but I put $ on the card.
Also have WiFi disconnecting like crazy too, so kinda want to exchange it for that since I'm still within 14 days.

How do you know if you bricked it. I got my prepaid card and flashed another Rom and forgot to reset wallet . Now all wallet does is hang at the activating screen. I just got off the phone with a google rep and he said if I got to the activating part then more that likely your not bricked. He said it won't let you in the app if secure element is bricked . He did say if you got the secure element message than you'll need to replace your phone

I work at BBYM I could careless if a phone was rooted if a basic feature of the phone was broke. Shouldn't have a problem. And like another user said, some people don't even know what recovery is....

Messing up my secure element has worried me too. I accidentally ran regaws root method and didn't reset google wallet, though it didn't brick it for some reason. I am lucky.
Are you getting the secure element message? If not, then you're good and you just need to do the fix that is found in the dev subforum here. I've done it twice and it works. You have to do it after any flash of a Rom.
Also, I really don't get the "im too good for wallet" attitude. I have used it and its very cool! I paid for gas at Sheetz right at the gas pump. Didn't go inside, didn't have to key in debt stuff. And it isn't a gimmick. A gimmick is something rather useless and wallet is something I find useful for me personally. Also, when the iPhone adopts NFC technology and all the Apple zombies begin using it, the popularity will move faster.

This, unfortunately, is true. Except first Apple will announce it as iPay or something so they'll all think it was their idea, and probably sue Google over it as well.
My phone is perfect and if I screwed up wallet I wouldn't bother taking my phone back. From what I read Google isn't even going to support our phones anymore anyways. Unless you have a supported Citicard, I think its dumb to use a credit card just to fund Wallet to then be limited to were you could use it. Wallet is pointless and useless and those who break it won't be missing out on much.
just lock it and ruu the phone or whatever is needed to get rid of that red text on the splash screen and hope for the best. If they are smart enough to boot into the bootloader they are doing it to try to deny a warranty, no other reason to go into it.
I'm not sure if BB even has a policy on that since the unlocking the bootloader thing is your warranty through HTC that is being affected.
Also, if you have never used google wallet I assume you don't have to reset it or whatever when you reflash do you? I have never used it so I never worried about resetting it. I wouldn't care if it didn't work though since I will never use google wallet for anything but maybe trying to get the free money that's on there.
Ok when does the secure element message popup ? When you trying to open the app or when you try to make a purchase?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I exchanged mine the other day at BB for the same reason. The manager reset it a couple times and then just did a swap for a new one. Didn't boot into recovery that I could see, but I was sure to remove root, relock the bootloader & run the RUU first.
Hey everyone I just rooted and went to setup Google wallet it's telling me it's now unsupported since I'm rooted.
Any ideas? Or workarounds?

Ya it should still work, least mine did. Used at mcdonalds and 711 even with the banner on display.
i read over in the EvoLTE forum that before you root you need to clear the data for google wallet IN THE APP (not with TB or anything else). And you have to do so every time you flash something. If you don't it is no longer secure
if you get the pop up saying the secure element is broken or something then google wallet is fried forever on that device. your not supposed to use google wallet and be rooted. i rooted and unlocked my galaxy nexus right when i got it and when i tried wallet i lost my 50 dollar credit and wallet access.

So wait I am confused here. If I used the normal root procedure using odin, but already had it set up I can't use Google Wallet for secure transactions anymore ever, or is it just when I flash new ROM's? If I borked it when I rooted it, it would have been nice to have had that disclaimer on the root thread telling people to do this before rooting.
Edit.... Google Wallet now works and installs from the market.
I would absolutely LOVE someone to hook up Google wallet to work with the i717. I tried installing the apk. It installed but when I open it, it says unsupported device.

It works on custom roms, just not roms with touchwiz. So the hardware is there. It's lacking development. And if you turn off nfc you can't get hacked. Idk why anyone would leave nfc on all the time. It has a small drain on the battery and I rarely bump info to friends. I rarely carry my wallet because it's bulky and you could be pick pocketed just as easier than being hacked. It would be handy to tap a widget enabling nfc, tap my phone for payment, then turn off nfc. You could steal my phone, but by the time you would be able to crack my screen lock, it would be remotely wiped. Try remote wiping your wallet that was just pick pocketed!
We've gone through this before. It won't work. Good luck trying though.

It may work with some ROMs, but not the way it was intended. The secure element is needed to protect and encrypt certain data. So no, technically the hardware is NOT there. Its not about making the software work. And you don't need nfc to steal that data, nor does one need to steal the phone. Hacking the software defeats the purpose of protecting the data. Tbe secure element is a physical hardware safe zone for card data. ..and the note does not have one. There is rumor of a SIM based secure element coming out, but I'm sure by the time it does I will have moved on to the Note 3 And on a final note, if you use a hackware APK to make wallet work, you might as well post your card info on facebook for the world to see...eventually somebody WILL compromise your card

The U.S. version of Samsung Wallet doesn’t appear to support credit cards and mobile payments at this time. The Korean version of theSamsung Wallet app allows users to add credit cards*for faster online payments, though it doesn’t appear that these cards can link up to the NFC chip to make mobile payments at a brick and mortar retailer. In the U.S. version of Samsung Wallet, there are no options for mobile payments, possibly due to the various carrier agreements that prevent Google Wallet from working on the most popular devices, including the latest Samsung devices.Users who want to try Samsung Wallet on the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 and other Samsung devices in the U.S. can open Samsung Apps on their device. Search for Samsung Wallet and then choose install. The app will show up in the app*launcher*just like apps downloaded through Google Play.

Ah but your credit info is secure on the merchant's end ( or at least theoretically supposed to be lmao) See, when you make purchases where enter your card information, the merchant's server both secures and encrypts that data, theoretcially keeping it safe. When you something lile google wallet, the data has to protected from the start i.e. on your phone. The only way to do so is with the secure element, which is like a little island, heavily guarded, and only when the proper handshake is given can it be accessed. The reason for this is unlike purchases over the net that utilize a cloud system for secure info is that the phone itself must store this info so it can communicate through NFC to the recipient device. And the only way to SECURELY do so is the secure element. Can it be done without it? Absolutely. Should it be? Absolutely not. You must consider the merchants take on this. What merchant would want to partake in an unsecure payment system? Being as that eventually it comes out of their pocket when fraud occurs...none. Hence the primary reason that carriers don't want to allow G Wallet use on devices not containing a secure element (that, and the fact want to get in on the money making themselves). I work in the financial industry, so I promise you don't want to use a hacked APK. Not because the individual that hacked it has done anything, but because the hacked APK has been modified to not require the secure element, and that card data now sits vulnerable on a device/sd card...
