How do I go about converting my SD card from "Generic Hierarchical" File system to ExFAT?
trying to ROOT my phone for the 1st time.
I right click and it gives me an option to FORMAT,
but it does not give me any option as to what type of file system to format
to, no options for ExFAT or any other types of file system formats..

Assuming you are trying using your phone you will likely need a microSD-to-SD converted. I tried using a USB device and it just messed things up.
Oh, what size card? I think anything <64GB will format exFAT using the phone but since I have 64GB I'm not expert on that.
I assume PC if you're using right click. What OS?
In windows 7 it looks like this:
edit - oops apparently I'm too much of a noob to post a freaking picture on this freaking forum. Jesus.
And you can change the FAT32 to ExFat in the second drop-down.
Another option is to use minitool partition wizard (google it)
Another thought - are you trying to format this from your phone? If so you will need to get a card reader to format it from your pc, I do not think formatting the card using your phone as the "card reader" on your pc will work. (as stated in the post above me)
yes
Yes I was trying to format the SD card while it was plugged into my phone.
I am on WINDOWS 8
It is a 15 or 16 Gig SD card, the one that came with the phone.
Is that ok or do I need to get a new card with more GIGS?
Thanks for the fast replies!

Oh no you'rre PLENTY good with 16 gigs. You really only need a very small amount of space to do this and then you can reformat the card in your phone and use it as extra storage if you'd like. But to do this exploit you'll need to get an external card reader to format the card on your pc. The only exception is if your card is 64gb, then you CAN apparently format to exfat in your phone. Go figure.
problem!
So i formatted the SD card..
I am using the latest Verizon samsung galaxy S4 the UAME7 one.. model # SCH-I545
I formatted the SD card, yet when i put it back in my phone and click properties.. it shows as a "GENERIC HEIRARCHICAL" file system
Is that right? It is not showing as ExFAT file system..
followed all these steps below..
when i get to typing the ./pwn , i get an error saying it cant find the file.. I hit ENTER or Return after i type each line correct?
1. Move all files and folders directly onto the root of your EXTERNAL microSD card only!
2. Download a Terminal Emulator app:
3. Open the Terminal Emulator app and run below 3 commands:
cd /mnt/extSdCard
./pwn
./script.sh

what steps did you take to format? (Used a card reader, right clicked in windows, select "format," change the filesystem type to from fat32 to exfat, etc)
and when you unzipped the zip file (root exploit package) in the link you found:
pwn
script.sh
readme
a folder called gs4ex
and moved all of these things to the root of your sd card?
when you type the first command in the terminal emulator and press enter what is the response you get back?
yea
I figured it out.. when i formatted it i had the QUICK FORMAT box checked.. i unchecked that, Formatted it again.. and finally got it to work!
So i got my phone rooted..
next step.. how do i backup the phone or ROM? Want to back it up before i install xprivacy or xposed.
Tried to do it holding the volume/home/power button, it shows me a recovery menu but no option to BACKUP the phone.
My goal here is to Permanently Disable the E911 GPS services.. for "911 calls/emergency only" which we all know is BS.. I would like to DIsable the E911 GPS but Would still like to be able to use my phone for GPS/DIrections. and disable any other apps from knowing my location etc.
I also want to disable any record keeping of phone calls or texts , is that even possible??
pretty much want to be untraceable, anonymous all around..
Any info on how to do so would be greatly appreciated.
From what my buddy told me i could install a custom ROM to turn off the Code for E911 GPS ?
or is there any other way to do so?
also formatted my SD card over all my PHOTOS, forgot to remove them first.... any way i can recover these? Or are they gone for good?

ME7 currently has a locked bootloader and no exploit in sight. Still plenty you can do with root, and there appears to be workaround almost ready.

I want to disable it, not just remove the ICON.. i want the E911 gps OFF
Why am i seeing things about people who want to just remove the E911 ICON?
That does not disable the actual E911 GPS does it?

after bricking and recovering the phone. my permissions on sd card will not change, so trying to update with a zip brings up error. i have no tick marks in user at all. When I try and press ok. they don't save. tried another sd card, still the same. anyone any idea's?
Did you sort this? I'm having a similar issue, my phone's not bricked though.. just can't write to my SD card..
I get this error message when I try to change permissions: "sdcard permissions cannot be changed because the file system is read-only."
try use ur com to fix it. right click on it and select properties and then on the tap tools, select error checking then select check now and then click start

harlo.. well, fat32 are universal because all android phone can read it. usually the main part for the sdcard is fat32, as far as i know. so i suggest you to use fat32 instead of ntfs
correct me if im wrong
Yip, I took the looong route!! Had to re-format with FAT32.. to add to my frustration, 2 out of the 3 laptops we have at home could not read the SD Card when formatted NTFS! Finally got it sorted on a Vista machine.. lol at least Vista's good for something
So, all sorted. Thanks for the love
I have been searching for answers on this and so far found nothing. Sorry if its already been covered somewhere I didn't find.
The SD card is working fine in the pone.
When I put it in a usb adapter to plug into my pc it mounts fine and I can copy files to it without any errors but when I put it back in the phone I cant see the files?
Same thing happens when I plug the phone into a pc with USB and copy the files.
The files are still there because when I plug back into the pc I can see them.
Anyone know why I have this issue please?
Many thanks
Ben
Try unmounting an remounting the sdcard in the Settings menu.
Have you tried other filemanagers than the stock one?
I can't confirm your issue but it sounds like a caching issue.
Have you tried turning it off and on again? =)
I have a similar issue , I have files that I have copied over to the phone sd card and wanted to use a file manager to move them around into different files however none of the file managers seem to see the files

If you're connected to PC as MTP mode, try to switch to camera transfer mode..

External and internal sdcard mount points
After some more investigating I have discovered that what is displayed as /sdcard/ is in fact the phones internal flash memory and the actual SD card is mounted as something else.
There you have 2 folders in /mnt
/mnt/sdcard >> taht is the internal flash storage
/mnt/sdextcard >> that is the inserted sd card
http://mono-for-android.1047100.n5.nabble.com/detect-SD-Card-path-td5710218.html
This explains why I could see the files i copied to my sd card on my phone as my phone wont enable me to see the actual external SD card.
Was surprised I couldn't find an actual thread about this on the forum.
I can see that creating a mount point for called SDCARD within the internal memory will allow apps that default large content files to use this space without complaining but this means that although Samsung allow SD cards to be inserted they cannot be used with a standard set up?
So is there any way for me to get to this other mount point without root access?
I thought, for a change, I might hold off rooting my phone but this might spur me on...
Afaik Android does not have a concept of "internal" SD card. (Which is the or at least a reason why most phones have a separate data partition)
However when phone manufacturer's started offering internal storage capacity for normal files, they just used the sdcard.
The name of the external sdcard varies from phone to phone and manufacturer.
I can remember that the name of the external sd card on my S1 was /sdcard/external_sd/ (no /mnt as with the S3 !)
On current Cyanogenmod for the S1 it's /mnt/emmc/ which seems to be introduced as some sort of "standard".
This variety in naming shemes and the possibility of a phone not having internal SD-card storage, only having internal SD-card storage or having both _SHOULD_ make app developers give you the option where to store it.
If it doesn't it's a restriction in the app, not the sdcard.
Solution[/b[
If you are rooted you can easily bypass these restrictions with a simple trick. Make sure the app is terminated before attempting this!
Go to the terminal emulator and type:
Code:
su
mkdir /mnt/sdcardext/APPFOLDER
cp -rvf /mnt/sdcard/APPFOLDER /mnt/sdcardext/APPFOLDER
mount -o bind /mnt/sdcard/APPFOLDER /mnt/sdcardext/APPFOLDER
You've now told Android to re-route all filesystem access'es transparently to the external SDcard while the app still believes it's on the internal one.
Note that you'll have to run the following after every boot (or have it run as auto-start) since mount's are not persistant.
Code:
su
mount -o bind /mnt/sdcard/APPFOLDER /mnt/sdcardext/APPFOLDER
Thank you for the explanation on this d4fseeker. Really all I wanted to do at this time was be able to access the external SD or point to it as a content location. But I will bookmark the solution for forcing apps to use it.
No I know what I know I have rooted my phone, curtesy of Chainfires guide here and can now see the extSDCard directory

In ES file explorer, you can go to your external SDcard by open Menu (left capacitive button), then select Manager and then SD card Analyst.
it will show /sdcard,,, it means internal SDcard. You have to touch "Disks" icon (the second from the left), then select /mnt/extSdCard. Eventually you can browse your external SD.
I don't know if there is the easier way. Or you can use the stock explorer app "My files", it is easier to browse the external card but with less function than 3rd party app.
That does work thanks - Turns out I purchased Root Explorer a while back so I have installed that and set the home directory to be the external SD mount point. Still need ES though for when I am copying across my network

I have quite the same problem but another way around. I can see all the (music)files in the phone but when I connect the phone via USB to my PC I can only see a few (about 30) of the files in the folder. I have booted the PC and the phone, took the SDcard also out and in. Also when I insert the SDCard to the PC's cardreader I can see all the files, so I quess the problem is in the phone. Any ideas how to solve this?
Not sure what your issue is but my advise is to confirm you a definitely looking at what you think you are - that was my problem before.
For example when the Phone is connected to your PC:
Create a text file called phone.txt in the 'Phone' Directory
Create one called card.txt in the 'Card' directory
Then use the built in 'my files' browser or whatever app you use to see if the files are where you think they are.
Might help...

But doesn't this simply relocate 100% of APPFOLDER to the microSD card and still leave no option to have Apps in both flash locations? Or will programs like App 2 SD somehow now be able to relocate apps back to the internal flash partition (aka "internal sdcard")?
Ah, nevermind. "APPFOLDER" is a single application's appfolder, not a directory with all the apps. So this should be something an app could do on any rooted S3 with a nice gui and persistence through some service mod in init.d or whatever Android uses in its place, yes?
Ok, was just digging around in /mnt/sdcard and while a few apps have obvious directories there, most do not. What's more, being an android noob, I'm not sure where their directories would be located (app manager doesn't say either).
Anyone care to point me in the right direction? Also, is there a way to install some other standard linux shell commands like more and grep?
Thanks.

Guide to set up 64 gigabyte SD cards to work with Lenovo P780 and TWRP.
*Disclaimer I'm not responsible for damages to your device or tools or computers, all things done at your own risk*
Hello, I had been using a 32 gigabyte SD card for a long time, and it was getting so full that I was becoming frustrated with deleting items to make space for pics or a new backup. I thought, wouldn't it be great if I could use a 64 gig card instead. So I searched the forum and found the answer a few pieces at a time till I got the whole picture. So I thought to simplify things for the next Joe that wants to give it a go.
What you'll need: A Lenovo P780 *rooted*, TWRP (I'm using the ROW build 2.7.1.1), Laptop/PC with a card reader, a 64 gigabyte SD card, and minitool partition wizard (http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html) The free version will do fine.
First step install the partition tool.
Second put your SD card into the card reader and clean it. Open up the Start Menu and type “diskpart” in the run box. Press enter. You’ll be prompted by the Windows UAC to authorize admin access to the DISKPART tool. A command-prompt-like window will open up, only the prompt will say “DISKPART”. At that prompt, type “list disk”. After identifying your SD card’s disk number, enter the following command “select disk #” where # is the disk number of your SD card. Whatever commands you execute after this point will only make changes to the selected disk; now would be a good time to double check you’ve selected the right disk just to be extra safe. Next, now enter the command “clean”. This will wipe the data and the partition too. Please backup anything you do not want to lose (I suggest starting with a new and empty SD card) Now launch the Minitool partition wizard. Find your SD card in the UI and highlight it with right click, Then navigate to the create selection. In the create partition section you will find many options in drop down lists to configure your new partition. Select the format type you'd like. I suggest FAT32 for now ( you may also be able to get exFAT working if it is set to primary, I will test that later.) the cluster size should be 32 KB (that is also the default in case you're not sure what to do with that one) Be sure you set the type to primary and not logical (If it is on logical TWRP won't mount it). Name your drive something if you like in the label field. After all that push the apply check mark at the top left of the UI and wait. It should work fine in the recovery and the ROM of your choice.
To set the SD card to exFAT: The mini wizard can't do that, but if you have already set the SD card to primary you can just reformat using the the format option in the drives and removable devices section. You right click on the SD card icon and navigate to format, pick exFAT format and run the format tool. The SD card will stay primary, so you won't have any problems with TWRP. I backup all files first and then simply mass restore them after. (flawless victory) Happy formatting.
Okay after some testing I noticed a problem with exFAT and TWRP. It can read to restore from the card but can't write files to the card, so backups won't take. I'm updating my recovery to see if it is just because I'm using an older recovery image. Nope. Sorry guys only works with FAT32.
Well done. Thanks.

Maybe not on a P780. But there may come a time when you need to know.
That. I'm rooted with TWRP recovery, using the AOSP Extended ROM v3.2 (7.1.1 nougat).
I dont want to format my sdcard to internal, because I use it to save files and backups, and zip files to flash on an emergency.
Is there an alternative? I can't seem to find one.
It would be cool to make it think it has 2 sd cards, 1 internal and 1 external, while in real it's just one that is formatted in 2 partitions, but I don't think thats possible.
Thanks.

It will nuke whatever is on your SD card. Won't touch a thing on your phone. Just follow the directions, he tells you how to confirm you're looking at the proper storage device.
AFAIK there are no negative effects beyond the normal additional read write cycles due to adoptable storage. Been using one card like this on the e (backup device, low use) for six months, and the other one for about a month now on the Z (high use daily driver). Working fine for me.

Seems legit. I have a 32gb sd (max for the Moto E surnia) and going for 25% internal (about 8gb) and 75% external (about 24gb.)
Thanks a lot!
EDIT: OK. I did it, but i forgotten to eject it, so now it's corrupted, and I can't seem to find a way to eject it to try to do it again, as when I press on the SD card, it tells me to format it. If I format it (temporarely, to then do it again) it will still say "Corrupted". EDIT2: I tried formatting it as portable and it worked, but then when I ejected with the icon next to the sd card, and then doing the commands gives the same result as before. "Portable Storage" is okay, named as "sdcard1 / vfat" but internal says "Corrupted". What do I try now?

Hmmm. Probably better off to reformat the whole card to a single fat32 partition (use a card formating tool on the pc for this) and start over. Not sure if or how to do it via adb if it's seeing one partition as corrupt.
Fwiw, 32gb is the max " officially " supported SD card size on the surnia, but it works fine with bigger cards. I'm running 64gb.
I'm going to try a solution that is on the comments of the blog post. Thanks!
EDIT: tried the solution, heres the comment:
A Bored Boy 16 September 2016 at 19:54
For anyone that is getting the corrupted error on their SD card when creating a mixed partition. Here is the solution.
After you have partitioned the disk and while your SD card is corruped enter In the terminal the following:
$> adb shell sm list-volumes all
Which will list your volumes, for example:
private mounted null
public:179,1 mounted B5B1-140C
private:179,3 unmountable null
emulated mounted null
Then enter the following replacing 179,3 with whichever disk numbers you are given:
$> adb shell sm format private:179,3
$> adb shell sm mount private:179,3
Now your SD card in device storage should be properly mounted and your portable storage will still be there.
This worked on my LG G5 and should work on the S7.
On the 2nd and 3rd step I get the following error:
▶ adb shell sm mount private:179_67
Error: java.lang.IllegalStateException: command '55 volume mount private:179_67 0 -1' failed with '400 55 Command failed'
Help?

OK. Tried formatting into FAT32 with a chromebook (only computer I had access to atm, no usb adapter :/) and it formatted. Then putted the sd on my phone, selected as portable, EJECTED and did the proccess.. no luck.
Same result. The internal partition marks as "corrupted".

Haven't used link2sd in many years. Used to require lots of manual management, but it's the same concept. 2 partitions on SD card, 2 different formats, apps on one, media etc on the other.
Give it a shot. Used to have to manually format SD card to ext2 (iirc) for the app partition.

I tried a thousand times with ext4 (and fat32) and it didnt work....
BUT WAIT, theres more! i tried with ext2 as you said (fat32 + ext2) and Just Works(tm)
Thanks, i really appreciate your help, you were the only one to respond lol...
PS: using apps2sd instead of link2sd as apps2sd has part manager, that's how i partitioned it, yay!
PS2: should i just use link2sd as "linker" and apps2sd as alternative/part manager?
thanks again ;D
Edit: I needed to change some config in SuperSU and create in advanced mode the Mnt script, but it works like a charm! It lets me move any app! ;D

Glad you got it working!
andorid sucks those years too
Can't seem to find this information anywhere. If this has already been discussed elsewhere, please forgive me. I would love to be able to format the micro sd card in my LG V30 so it is recognized as additional internal storage. I understand that the read/write speeds won't be as efficient as the actual internal storage and that the performance/responsiveness of the device may suffer. Not a concern for me. Also, not interested in any alternative solutions. Please no comments to the tune of "just use the sd card as portable storage and move files as necessary". Only interested in formatting the card as internal storage. Thanks!
If you have the SD card already mounted:
Settings > Storage
Click the little icon next to your SD card which should open a file manager. Click on 3 dot menu at upper right and select "Storage Settings" and you should find what you need.
If the card isn't already mounted, you should get the "internal" option the first time you mount the card.
This is based on my H932 running custom Havoc Pie ROM so you're mileage may vary.

Sorry, should have mentioned this in the first post, I have tried this already. The option to format as internal storage is not there. Also should mention that I have tried the above both as a VS996 and US998. No luck either way.
If you preformat the card to something the phone should recognize, then the option should appear. Maybe exFat? Do you have another card you can test with to make sure this is good?

This did not work, either.

test another card then! Your testing is a bit ambiguous unless we know what steps you took.
Something I'd try is "cleaning" the card in Windows (using diskpart), then exiting without any further preparation and inserting it into the phone.
Not sure if Android can initialize a completely empty disk, but I'd think that would get rid of anything that might predispose the phone to forcing it as external-only. Probably.
According to:
androidpit.com/how-to-format-microsd-cards-as-internal-storage (Sorry, this is my first post here so I don't have hyperlink functionality unlocked)
LG, and other manufacturers hide the functionality that others here suggest. I have not yet tested it, and the guide refers to Android 6.0, but it has some good detail on the subject. If I have success with this I'll follow up. I'm running Android 9.0 on an LG V30.
I got this working on my v30, running stock pie (root)
use of adb debugging, commands are;
adb shell
sm set-force-adoptable on
sm list-disks
sm partition disk:xx,xx mixed 0 (xx,xx is what disks number that shows from the previous command)
-wait til complete-
sm list-volumes (to verify it is now shown as private)
Doing the command "adb sm partition disks:xx,xx private" is suppose to work, but i've never had it work for me, but mixed 0 works just the same. I am getting an issue of it showing that i have 500gbs from the SD card, even tho i actually have 256gbs, but it still works.
