why have to toggle airplane mode to get wifi to come on? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Anyone know why I would have to toggle airplane mode to get wifi to come on? I'm rooted on Slim rom but it has occurred on every rom I've been on. Seems like it wasn't happening when I first got my phone but lately wifi just does not automatically come on by itself.
Also, when I'm at work (at a hospital) now I can't even connect to the wifi where I could before...

[Q] Convert to Wifi only

I'm getting a second hand Streak 5". I don't have AT&T, but I recall hearing that dell had also made a Wifi only model. My question is: can I load a Wifi only rom (are there even any?) on it and disable the phone/3G?
There are no wifi only streak 5's only streak 7's have a wifi inly model
try dialing *#4636#*#* (*#*#INFO#*#*) then press call.
try phone information, I beleive there is a button to turn radio off, which should completly disable 3G radio.
Not sure if this will stick after reboot, but I think it should.
settings also gives you the option to turn off data, etc. and if there's no SIM card in it, I dont imagine it will use any radio.
I use APNDroid which seems to disable radio pertty successfully, only allowing wifi connections.
I use my Streak 5 in wifi only mode.
I started off just not having a SIM in it, but I found that cell standby was still eating loads of battery - as much as the phone idle was, due to the fact that they are still able to make emergency calls even without a sim.
The really simple solution is that I installed Widgetsoid and added a widget with toggles for Airplane mode and for Wifi on it. I assume any widget app that allows these toggles would work. I then turn Airplane mode on, which kills the cellular radio, both 2g and 3g, and turn on wifi when I need it - which overrides the airplane disable.
I've even found that JuiceDefender can auto-toggle wifi while in airplane mode based on running apps, though only after rebooting while in airplane mode - before the reboot, it quite sensibly saw airplane mode and left the radios all off.
Thanks for the tips.
Got it up and running nice, again thanks for the tips.
And just to clarify, even if I throw a custom rom (probably StreakDroid) I can't pull phone/3g functionality? Could I pull some apks from the StreakDroid zip to get make it wifi only, or would I need a custom kernel?

[Q] Data doesn't work, airplane mode is the only fix... any ideas?

I posted a question about this last week thinking it was a wifi problem, but it turns out it happens when I'm on data too, so it's an overall data problem... I'm just using wifi most of the time so that was the only place I had noticed it.
Occasionally my phone will stop being able to send/receive data. I'll turn it on and try to load a web page, for example, and it will just hang. Turning wifi on/off doesn't fix it, and turning data on/off doesn't seem to fix it either. The only solution I've found is going into airplane mode for a second. The frequency varies.. it seems to happen between 1-5 times a day, so it's pretty inconvenient.
I've read around a bit and it sounds like it's caused by the phone trying to get a 4G connection but it isn't able to or something, so it just hangs there and never lets the 3g/wifi connections get used (due to priority of connections or something). I almost always have wifi and don't care that much about data speeds, so if disabling 4g altogether would fix the problem I'm game (although I'd prefer another solution...). I tried the *#*#4636#*#* code to change it to GSM only (I read somewhere that that'll disable 4g), but it instantly reverts back to what it originally was, so that doesn't seem like it'll work. Is there another way to disable 4g?
I've got the stock ROM running Entropy's latest DD kernel.
I've had this same exact issue while running Miui and the Siyah kernel. What I've narrowed it down to is likely to be some sort of power save mode that kicks in when the phone goes into deep sleep mode. I haven't had the issue since I've ran the Kernel cleaning scripts and reflashed the latest Siyah kernel, but it reappears occasionally. On certain releases of Siyah, I've ran SetCPU at a minimum of 200Mhz to keep the phone from going into deep sleep just so it wouldn't turn off the cell radio.
Also, as a side note, I've had this happen when my phone loses signal. After so much searching, it will turn off the entire cell radio and display "Emergency Calls Only" until Airplane mode is toggled.
I had this same problem even back with my Captivate. Hoping ICS won't have the same issue. I'm running CM7 and Siyah kernel.
I am having the same problem Data wont work until i turn airplane mode on and off

Have you found a resolution?

[Q] Slow Data connection on ICS roms?

All,
I'm having a problem under two different ICS Roms (the "unofficial" leak and the ICS Objection RC3) where when I disable WIFI or move out of wifi range it takes several minutes for the data connection to establish. If I go to Settings -> About -> Status and watch while turning off WIFI I see "Mobile Network State" go to Connecting... and "Mobile Network Type" flip between HSPA:11, HSPAP:15, UTMS:3, then settle on HSPA:11 for several minutes. Then it flips through them again and settles on HSPAP:15 and boom I have data. This doesn't ALWAYS happen though, but about 90% of the time it does.
I've seen a few people mention this but nothing widespread in the forums - I'm worried it's related to my phone specifically. I flashed back to the stock gingerbread and the data switches are instantaneous every single time, so it doesn't seem to be hardware. Since this only happens on the ICS roms I'm assuming it's related to them but not sure where to check next. Any kind souls have any ideas to help me move forward? I'm currently on the ICS Objection RC3 rom and really don't want to go back
Thanks
I am having the same problem, I am on the stock ucle2 leaked rom not rooted, and it just started happing. After my wifi being on overnight I wake up and go to leave my house and my 3g/4g will not turn back on, I found that if I turn airplane on and then off again my data will turn back on. Does anyone know what would cause this, and any ideas on how to fix it?

WiFi Issue

I am running Liquid Smooth 3.2 for months now. I format it regularly just to get a new sense of speed after downloading junk i shouldnt have to begin with. Recently i have been formating to fix my WiFi issue. It seems like when i connect wifi (turn it on) it simply doesnt connect (it doesnt turn from grey to white or blue) it just stays grey. WHen i look at the list of wifi available it says its connected but i receive no data. After a while it seems to syncronize and the wifi works. I used to think if i turn on 4g and wifi together it seems to speed it up. All speculation, the only fact is WiFi isnt working upon engaging it. Reboot fixes it untill i turn wifi off (or it the AP goes unavailable for extended period of time, it doesnt seem associated with turning it off and on.)
Any suggestions? I have tried backdating to .09 radio. It doesnt seem to fix it.

[Somewhat Resolved] LGG3 wifi and hotspot not working

When I turn my wifi on, it does nothing. My hotspot doesn't work either. Problem started last week after I switched into airplane mode.
What I've tried:
-reboot phone
-cycle wifi and airplane mode
-clear cache and data for Android and Google processes
-reflash zv8 modem
-factory data reset
-wifi fixer android app
Nothing has worked so far. The only hardware change that i made was to replace the audio [headphone] jack and replace the battery with another brand new OEM battery.
LGG3 LS990
Sprint
Stock ZV8
Nova prime launcher
Stock kernel
Bumped and stumped
TWRP recovery
Any help would be appreciated.
I was able to resolve this issue. Apparently, there is an issue with the wifi and airplane mode on the lgg3 with lollipop 5.0. I found some other folks having the same issues on a t-mobile msg board.
What I did to resolve:
Turn wifi and wifi calling on.
Turn airplane mode on.
Long press wifi to view access points and wait for them to appear.
Disable airplane mode and select access point.
Problem solved.
In my case, it was absolutely a software issue. I will update if this issue returns.
Issue came back after an incoming call. Unable to get wifi back on using method stated previously. Still trying to mess with the phone.
Dangit.
