4.2.2.. does anyone know what is to come? - G2 General

I'm really surprised after looking into this phone that it's only running 4.2.2 considering it's being release just a couple weeks before the note 3.. Does have news on whether it will be getting 4.3.. or kitkat?

Kitkat may be far away since nexus five is not yet unveiled, I guess

It will at least get 4.3 I would guess since it doesn't make much sense to have the new OpenGL 3.0 capable 330 GPU and only have an OS that supports OpenGL 2.0 stay on the phone. How quickly we will get this is anyone's guess however. I saw that google is already on 4.3_r3 which means they are still merging tweaks and fixes to the 4.3 release. LG may be integrating these and waiting for a stable code base to release with.

4.3 on my Gnex screams, I can only imagine on the monster that is the G2!
Im hoping we get KitKat but will settle for 4.3 for now.

LG is also doing all of the multitasking stuff that Samsung has been doing for the note 2 for the first time I believe. They probably started development with 4.2 or 4.2.1 and before release integrated 4.2.2. Integrating 4.3 before release would have pushed the release window too far behind the note 3 for them to stay competitive. They likely decided to release with 4.2.2 while already updating to 4.3 in another code tree, or plan to wait till 4.4 to give us a new OS version based update. All speculation, but it makes sense to me at least .

I'd hate to say it but LG + AT&T ugh I wouldn't hold my breath lol first of the year maybe at the earliest for 4.3

I'm hoping to go direct to 4.4 personally. Hopefully LG has had lots of access with the n5 to get a head start on it.

You're making me excited! My Galaxy Nexus is also super fast on 4.3. I can only imagine how blazing fast the G2 will be with CyanogenMod 10.2. Oh, it makes me quiver with excitement.

I have the T-Mobile variant. They have been on a big "be the best carrier" push, so I wouldn't doubt getting a new firmware update before the other carrier phones

Screw Android 4.3 At this point I want LG to release an update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat next year because we know Android is going to release some minor patches after Android 4.4 is released.

hmm yep you're right
why 4.2.2 at the first position instead 4.3
but since the major changelogs from 4.2.2 to 4.3 are about the bluetooth thingy and open GL thingy
for me it doesn't matter
since this beast can do all the things that a phone should do
who knows maybe after this, the first jump is kitkat
imho

4.3 re-wrote a lot of behind the scenes stuff. Memory management and garbage collection seem MUCH better. My Gnex has never been so fast as it is on 4.3.
BUT part of the bluetooth rewrite has caused my phone to reboot on re-connection to my car head unit. A few others have experienced the same issue, across different ROMs as well so it very well may be an issue with the Android source code. Hopefully Le Goog fixes it because the rest of 4.3 is awesome. And FWIW 4.3 is the first version that actually streams the bluethooth metadata correctly so I can see artist/album/track info on my head unit now.

Heh no biggie, they arent exactly easy to read anyway!

I dont want 4.3 on this phone becuz it gives lg an excuse not to give 4.4. At this point i only want 4.4 becuz i expect more features to be added which includes all the 4.3 features.

JellyBean Port?

JellyBean was ported form the Nexus Devices that were given out at I/O, is there a chance that a developer will port this to the maxx and og razr?
oh. my. god. i am going to have to switch to iPhone or go mad.
someone or some people will be allready on it and why not if tyhe source code is out
ICS is nice but i get the feeling its gonna be Androids Vista people might just skip for Jellybean
Some of us my friend still don't have ICS....let alone JB
Sources not available yet... But i think that changes only affects android platform and not kernel. All HW accel was done in 4.0, so 4.1 should only optimize android itself (dalvik, gui underlying libraries, etc).
Nexus and RAZR share same CPU (OMAP4430/4460 - the only difference is CPU freq, so technically we can use libs from nexus without any problem and without recompilation since libraries already optimized for or CPU), same GPU (PVR SGX 540, however nexus's GPU is slightly overclocked) - so H/W accel should not be a problem
So there is a good change that someone will port 4.1 to our devices. Or maybe i'm just wrong
I just played w my buds verizon nexus on the team vicious jelly bean and it is nice! Smooth. Siri like voice assistant that really does a lot. I didn't expect it to be such a large update. I like and of course am hoping to get it on the RAZR soon but as it is ics is very very nice

That sounds like an excellent strategy, because as we all know, hearing about a new OS makes our phones turn from great to absolutely unusable piles of junk. And, I want to help. I'll offer you FIVE DOLLARS for your Razr. SIX dollars if it's a Maxx. AND, I'll throw in an additional quarter if it has a 32gb or larger memory card. You can put this money towards a new iPhone 4s!
WOW, it feels great helping people! Yay me!
I'm going to wait a little while long for the OTA for ICS in Canada (rogers), but i'm getting tired of waiting!!! lol for my first android phone, was expecting a little more, but... after a "little while" i'm going to figure out how to push a image of ICS lol
i hope JB comes to the razr, but i'll just be happy with ICS

Seriously, just because JB has been announced, doesn't make ICS any less awesome. It flies on the Razr, I love it (leaked .211). It seems like now people are starting to get the attitude that just because JB is going to be released soon, makes ICS ancient and unworthy for their device. I've seen people across this, and other forums, talking about selling their phones to get one that JB will be released to at some point. Unless you get a pure Google phone, like the Nexus, you won't be getting an upgrade to JB anytime soon. All manufacturers operate in the same mindset. Ventures that make them money is priority one, followed by other things, then other things, and then upgrading to the latest and greatest for existing devices sits kind of low. If the kernel source turns out to be an ICS based kernel, I'm sure that one of the devs will be cranking out a version for us to flash in SS 2.0.
From the sounds of it we should at least get some sort of port. One thing that concerns me is how the performance boost will affect battery. The whole 60fps thing would surely eat through any power source. My bro has a gnex so I'll see soon enough.

Let's try to keep some perspective... this fall, it's released, then the manufacturers and carriers go through the process to make it work on their own hardware, and it gets pushed in Q1 or Q2 of 2013.
This is not an impending thing.
Do I have too much faith in da devs then? My old device was a desire z and got ics ported to it about 6 weeks after release. The RAZR is much close in hardware to the gnex and ics is much closer in code to jb. I'm not putting money on it but I am hopeful.

the devs at droidrazr.com are already going to be working on porting jellybean to the razr & maxx. as far as an ota since 4.1 is a minor update it shouldn't take moto long to get it going for us.

LOOK AT moto with ICS and not only them but every other manufacturer ICS was released over a year ago and now its finally being pushed out to the razr barely. So when JB gets pushed out to the razr and thats a big if I would just hold my breath for about a year or more. Or do like every one else flash a rom based on jb. which should be out by the start of next year or the end of this year.

Not looking forward to 4.4(Desperately)

Hi Guys,
Now that 4.4 Kit Kat has been announced, i see a mad rush of people asking when will we get it and stuff. My question is what are the changes you are looking forward from Kit Kat that makes your phone great. Is there any one single must have feature in Kitkat, that you want badly. Answer for me is NO.
4.2.2. is running absolutely fine on G2, it pretty much flies, gives a great battery life as well. I would rather have LG take 3-4 months and then deliver a good clean bug free version, rather then deliver half cooked ROM to just rush it. 4.3 was just an OK update, and so is 4.4.
So guess we should just enjoy our phone right now, and not worry too much about 4.4. It will come when it has to, for now there is not even one single thing that 4.4 can do but not 4.2.2.
Have fun and keep smiling.
A very happy G2 Owner.

guys, to be fair, when jellybean came out, it absolutely 100 percent ruined the galaxy s3. who knows if LG has optimized their ui properly for kitkat yet.. Samsung sure didn't until pretty much recently.. and its still laggy. if any of you had an s3, youd probably remember how fast, smooth and zippy the phone was when it launched and had ics. it was the best phone I'd ever used. then jellybean came.. and it was awful. everything became laggy, slow, frame rate dropped horrendously.. it was just terrible. so yeah, i agree with this guy.. then again I'm rooted so i have a choice lol
Sent from my LG G2 using Tapatalk Pro
After running almost every release of ICS and JellyBean on my Gnex, I can say the "behind the scenes" improvements Google made in 4.3 made the phone a LOT smoother/faster. I know they did a lot of work in regards to memory usage, garbage collection, etc.
It also looks like they may have continued that work in 4.4, and if thats the case I would expect it to be another update that we would actually WANT, vs the original JellyBean releases.
There isnt really anything I *have* to have in KitKat, but once the third party ROMs mature Im sure Ill install it. I just find it funny that 4.3 nightlies JUST started a couple weeks ago, and now we're already looking at KitKat coming up.
Again as I said I absolutely want it, just that there is no rush or burning desire to have it today.
Let LG take sometime and give us a good rom, till then I am pretty good.

I'm looking forward to the native IR Blaster support so we can get some really good remote control apps that work across all devices that have IR Blasters (ONE, G2, S4, Note3, etc...)
I agree with a previous post about how much smoother 4.3 was over 4.2 and how 4.4 looks even better. So I want that. G2 already has almost no lag in my experience so I am excited to see it on 4.3 or 4.4. Also I want to get this device above 4.3 for the Trim Support. Every Android Device and ROM I have used have been great for a few weeks then bit by bit t h e y s l o w down. So it will be good to not have that issue much longer.
But right now I am surprised by how much I like the LG Skin. I hope for 4.3 or 4.4 versions that they keep it at the current level, don't add more to compete with Sammie, and just refine what they have already.
The native IR support is what makes me want 4.4 the most. At first I thought it was kind of gimmicky until I realized that it has much more use to me than I could have imagined. I work in the AV industry and being able to control displays in the field from my phone is a huge help.

I'm pretty sure that LG had access to KitKat sources long ago, since July at least and steady working on porting to G2
The must have features are: OpenGL 3.0 ES support, and navbar customization and hiding. W/o these features G2 is like a large bit crippled

Lol. Grinch of salt? Must be close to Christmas already.
Just because we haven't gotten 4.4.4 doesn't mean T-Mobile or Samsung won't skip to L.
I had a sprint s3 on 4.2 and it skipped the 4.2.2 update and went straight to 4.3. So there's a possibility of that happening for our devices.
Why do threads like this pop up every time some news article quotes an ETA? This is how it goes EVERY TIME for US carriers....International gets the update first....maybe 1-3 months after the OS update is released...then US Carriers "may" see the update based on the carrier's prerogative 3-6 months after that. So don't even think of holding your breath until you see the international version get the update.
But certainly use this thread to discuss upcoming features if you like rather than see another 10 of these threads pop up.

I'm fine with skipping 4.4.4 really
Got it on my s4 and it really isn't much different.
The video preview looked nice though.
Hopefully I can still upgrade with mobile Odin when it comes out a keep root.
I finally have my Linux box setup correctly so I can make a firmware only file from it too as well as make a custom rom which I can remove the tethering checks and enable 180° rotation too

yea 4.4.4 is not a big deal either for me...... I prefer we get L quickly and not take even longer because they release 4.4.4 a month before
The audio enhancements (low latency) alone are well worth the wait for Android L. RAW format and other camera enhancements will hopefully be embraced and enhanced further by Samsung.
Yes, skipping 4.4.4 straight to Android L with little delay on release would be my preference.

Great news, Galaxy S5 owners: You may not have to wait that much longer to get Android 5.0 Lollipop on your favorite phone. SamMobile’s sources indicate that Lollipop will start rolling out to the Galaxy S5 sometime in December, which hopefully means you should get it on your own device before the year is over.
SamMobile says that Samsung is making some adjustments to its TouchWiz overlay to make it fit in better with Material Design so hopefully this means there won’t be too much of a jarring difference between what you’ll get on the Galaxy S5 with TouchWiz and a Galaxy S5 with stock Android.

No EMUI 3.0 Kit Kat update ? HAM2 4G (Mt2-L03)

Ran across this image and wanted to share it with you guys . This is an ETA time sheet for the EMUI 3.0 update across Huawei devices and the american version of the Ascend Mate 2 4g (MT2-L03) is nowhere to be found . Though the other HAM2 models overseas are in the update plans . Sad to hear we are probably not likely going to get an update !
If this turns out to be true, this will likely be the last Huawei device I ever buy. They were 2 versions behind when they released it. A good custom rom will satisfy me though.
All the 3 MT2 listed in the chart are Chinese varies. But I agree Huawei has put MT2 to lower priority already. So hopefully they didn't list L03 just because that list is for domestic customers.

Yea, this could be true (Was thinking that myself) . Time will tell , hopefully we see an update before new years on our HAM2.

Agree! They are pushing very hard at promoting the HAM2 here in the US and I doubt that they would neglect any future OS updates as this is critical if they want to gain ground here in America . I'm sure they will , though they don't make those decisions here , their team in China does . That's why when people ask of they are gonna push an update they never give a concrete answer , just the typical " The HAM2 is upgradable and we will give out details when , if , it gets updated "
Not that big of a deal. Would it be nice? Yeah, but for my use, 4.3 is stable, runs everything I use.
If they did release 4.4, you know it would have some glitches out of the gate, which I would prefer not to
have. My Note1, which was replaced by the Mate2, I never got an "official" update past 4.1.2, and the custom
roms had some problems here or there. 4.1.2 was super stable.
I'll take an older stable version, over the new OS any day.
This could be the update to prepare for kit kat

Thanks for the info, not sure this 20MB update requires unroot or not. hope not.
KitKat coming this November?
I came across an update schedule a while back browsing hauweinews dot com. Look for "EMUI 3.0 Release Schedule Announced."
HAM2 is supposed to get the EMUI 3.0 update this November.
The November release date is only currently confirmed for MT2-C00, MT2-L01,MT2-L02 and MT2-L05 I'm afraid. Rom will be available in November for these devices and OTA update will come in December.
Yea , like the previous post stated , only the Asian variants of the Mate2 have been confirmed . No word on our MT2-L03 yet . Happy that they will address low light photography with the update coming out on the 8th of this month though .. And other small fixes
I don't really care if we get EMUI 3.0. I just want KitKat with a newer version of EMUI to be able to access all the awesome themes. But EMUI 3.0 would obviously be cool Lol
EMUI 2 = Jellybean
EMUI 3 = Kit-Kat

That's not strictly true as I'm on kitkat 4.4.2 with EMUI 2.3
I'm confident the US Mate2 is going to get the update. This is the only nice phone they have in America with LTE and its the only phone they are promoting on www.gethuawei.com. As a general marketing rule its going to be forced to be updated. The new Huawei Models coming out still does not have US LTE (idots). The phone is now coming out in Frys Electronics and It is now also being sold on ConsumerCellular. The more people keep buying this phone the better support we will get. HuaweiUSA is trying to stay here so a simple email to [email protected] telling them to give u kitkat updated wount hurt either.

According to the faq in one of the Huawei pages KitKat is coming to mt2l03 but they dont commit to any date :/

Well, look at it this way, upgrading from like OS to like OS (4.3, 4.3, 4.3.x) isn't that big of a deal usually.
Updating from a .3 to a .4, JB>KK, may bring with it a whole host of issues.
I'd rather they give the update to the Chinese version, work out the kinks, BEFORE bring it it to the LTE version.
Better user experience.

There are 5 carrier versions of the Chinese Mate 2, they are ALL LTE apart from the MT2-C00.
I am yet to find any kinks in KK.
No fc's, lags or anything else, it's been a rock solid experience so far. Hopefully you will get it soon. :good:

Perhaps, but, it's not a "game changer" for me. I don't really expect "significant" updates for devices from carriers or
manufacturers, save for Apple, because, if you think about it, it sort of goes against their business model. If a huge update
is pushed out, there is no incentive to buy a new device. Right now, the stock OS on the (U.S.) Mate2 is about one of the
most stable that I have come across.

True, the Mate 2 is running well, but I own a lot of devices, all but the Mate 2 running 4.4.2 or higher. Stability has not been an issue as they all run without any issues. That being said the improvements made in Kit Kat have been rolled into the the apps themselves in 4.3. The cosmetic differences can be added rooting, with framework etc. The only thing I really notice is my emolge are black and white in any other apps besides Hangouts. That being said, Android L running ART could be a great impact on better performance, so getting the Kit Kat update would be nice to see too as well as continuing updates. I have older devices, S3 on StraighTalk for example that has never gotten an update in 2 years. Can't run some of the apps I use. Lg L86C, same boat, almost 400 bucks for that phone 2 years ago, never got an update, can't even run Google now launcher or Google wear. No emolge support at all. Those are both phones that would see great benefits in running Kit Kat with the lower ram and specifications. If the Ham 2 goes that route it would be my last phone from Huawei. Let's hope they continue to support the devices they make for at least 2 years. That would be satisfactory to me.

Porting Lollipop to the G2?

I know LG has confirmed Lollipop next year for the G2 but is it possible for Lollipop to be ported from another device? (Like the Nexus 5)
Or do we have to wait for LG to release some sort of source/kernal?
Just wondering
The G3 will get it by the end of this year, most likely we'll get a port from that

You sure about that? I mean I'm no code builder but I figured that would take a while, thatd be great if your right tho.
I'd definitely consider going AOSP Lollipop as its aesthetically pleasing. Never really liked AOSP Kitkat

My Shield Tablet is getting the Lollipop update this month, so it would be cool to keep the UI standardized between my G2 and that. A CM12 version of Lollipop would be nice, but I want a straight up AOSP version so bad! Nvidia's barely touched version of Android is way nicer after I rooted it and installed xposed compared to CM11. Perfection on the G2 would be if LG releases Lollipop for the G2 and someone did something like the de-Sensed ROM's on the HTC phones. Strip off the LG UI and keep the it pure Android, but with all the LG stuff under the hood so we still have good camera performance and less issues.

Early reports on Nexus 7 suggest that boot times and overall performance have greatly increased.

I've used Lollipop on my Nexus 5 since the first dev preview was released. ART results in a long first boot because it is compiling the runtime cache for each app. Every boot after that should be the same or better as Dalvik used to be. It is the same as it was on KitKat, with LRX21M the N5 boots in about 3-5 seconds. 5.0 gives crazy performance improvements, especially on older devices like the Nexus 10 (KitKat performance was okay at best). It will definitely be worth it.
Question is, how possible is it? I sold the G2 in April because of all the kernel issues and loki patches LG made. How unlocked is this device at this point? For me, AOSP ROMs had issues galore(GPS, freezing, etc.) because of the lack of source, and certain radios had loki patches in them(ZVA,ZVC etc.). Even ROMs were dropping support for the G2 due to kernel issues. Remember that the stock Google kernel CANNOT obtain root on Lollipop, a custom kernel is required, preferably with SELinux set to permissive. On Nexus that has been achieved because of the unlocked bootloader allowing for the flashing of .imgs. If the kernel needs to be in-line with LG source + bootloader, I highly doubt that root would be easy to obtain...
Basically, what is the status of the G2 at this point?

Nicely said. I don't have an option, though. Meh.
I think we should see how the G3 goes with rooting when Lollipop hits.
Yeah, that's been my experience while looking for stable custom Roms. It appears, g2 is best used as stock or sold (although I have the highest regard for all the devs who worked countless hours to bring us all the custom goodness on g2). But it appears most devs are moving to other platforms starting 5.0. I hate stock OS so much that selling the device looks to be my next best option, but there's just no clear winner\awesome device to push me over the edge (thanks google for ur 6 inch monster - now even the nexus is out).

I havent seen a single developer depart recently for 5.0 besides madhi i believe, though i wouldn't be surprised if he was working on some kind of port!

We have some core developers like @dorimanx and all the other cool cats who maintain huge multiplatform roms. I'm going to attempt porting lolli to the g2 right now. The repository is syncing, i have lg kitkat source and @dr87 has sources for porting roms within kitkat.
I can extrapolate and figure out how to rebase it on 5.0, but many developers will do so before me. Things arent that bad really for the G2, id say they are WAY better than they were 6 months ago.

Yeah, uh. It appears the second half of my post was cut out.
I'll just retype it here:
It's very possible. People can do what Cyanogen did with CM11. It's not very unlocked, really. Nothing has really changed since Loki was released. AOSP ROMs have been better recently, but the camera is pretty bad.
Everything is exploitable. Perhaps they'll figure out how to get out of the sandbox. Just look at iOS, for example.
Now, since since Lollipop kernel sources will likely be open, people can probably create a flashable zip of a Lollipop OTA and remove that part of the kernel that prevents rooting. People can always use the flash tool tip restore to an older version and then use AutoRec.
