Yes, do the update. It should update to Android OS Version 4.1.1 Release 2.
To gain root access, use Condi's S.onyTablet.S [ALLinONE] Tool.

Just do a factory reset via recovery (volume up and power while device off).

Kies, Odin, Mobile Odin, CWM. Take your pick.
Unsure about any of them? There's a search function, and it's not just there to look pretty.
Just be sure to take note that you have an I9100G (according to your spammy signature) before doing something silly.

Update is as said via KIES the over the air FOTA service is not yet fully rolled out hopefully it will be ready for the imminent release of ICS Android 4 .
The latest version may not be available for your phone . In which case update via the stock roms post .

update
some website shows ics officially update realesed on 10th march?
So? They're clearly wrong, and if you would take a few seconds to search, you could have found official clarification.
By the way, sticking a question mark at the end of a statement a question does not make.

Update 5 rooted

Does any one have the release 5 update for Sony Tablet S which is pre-rooted so I can flash on my tablet?
I'm on release 1a in UK

I do not believe you will find a link for a pre-rooted copy of 4.0.3r5. Even if you did find one, it would not work for you. You must download the 4.0.3r5 file then pre-root and install it yourself by using Condi's ALLinONE tool. There is a lot more going on in the pre-root and install process than just flashing your tablet with a custom_update_signed.zip file.
Your other option is to do a normal update/install of 4.0.3r5 and then root it after it has been installed by using the method originally posted by WonderEkin.

Not yet for UK, keep an eye on my update thread... Update links are usually in there within a day
You could always use AIO tool to change to US region....

What I mean was that you could ask in another thread.
As already mentioned, the best thing to do is update and then root (you can even change your build.prop and install US update. It's was my case, I'm from Portugal).
The pre-rooted file it's possible, because I've update (from honeycomb) my tablet like that. with condi tool I was not able to create the signed update file.
OP how did you root your UK Sony Tab S? I'm on 1a and have tried everything just no luck. Any ideas?

For starters R5 is only av for US atm. You will need root to change to US region then install OTA update or flash from zip. Might be best to wait for OTA update for your region.

try updating it to 4.0.3 which has better battery performance
which rom did yu update to.
Som roms have alot of customizations which will run down the battery fast if not set to manual start. like email, sync and a few other apps.
Hey, what a wonderful help . Im using 4.0.1. I really got a feeling that my ROM drain my battery. To be honest , I have some knowledge about computer , could you simply guide a little bit on how I can switch my ROM from 4.0.1 to 4.0.3 ?

I just tried to update it by going to setting and hit software update and then it says the phone got the update file and tells me that the phone will be rebooted. However , after the booting it says the phone failed to update and suggested I use something like kies or visit Samsung Service center

Currently, Sony's stock Android 4.0.3r5a cannot be rooted, nor can it be downgraded to an earlier, rootable version. "Reading" is your friend.
ok thank bro

You are replying to a post that is six months old. Things have changed. Now, Sony's stock Android 4.0.3r5a can be rooted using Condi's S.onyTablet.S [ALLinONE] Tool.
