Hey All,
First, and most importantly, I would like to say hello and THANKS to all of the people on this forum and devs who put together and support CFW's. You all do great jobs, and should be proud of your work.
Second, I have not posted here before since my questions were always answered with a search of the forums. This time it is not the case as I will explain.
I have a Galaxy note from Bell and I think it is an awesome piece of hardware (so much so I also bought a Note 10.1). I was quite happy with it for a long time but my patience for touchwiz eventually wore thin. Turning on the phone to make a call or text and having to wait while the phone finishes some phantom background task was incredibly annoying. Why does Samsung make great hardware and then ruin it with bloatware and junk?
This led me to to find a CFW which did not have this issue. I tried several and was blown away by the quality and completeness of these roms. They solved so many problems and did things the way the should have been done in the first place. I was in heaven. There was just one problem...stability. None of them slowed to a crawl and were always blisteringly fast, but the phone would lock up and reboot once every day or 2. This was not acceptable for a phone which is needed for work and emergencies. I would assume that the small number of these phones makes it less likely for the roms to be tested with them to the same extent as for a Note 2 or S3. I have even tried touchwiz-based roms which do not crash, but have the same occasional unresponsiveness of the samsung original.
So here is my question: has anyone found a rom which is STABLE in a real way? When I search I see people who say roms are stable but they never qualify their opinion with crash frequency so it remains a purely relative term. I love this phone and would really love to have a rom like PAC with all of its awesomeness but stability is king for me.
Here is what I have tried, full wipes done before each flash:
Cyanogenmod 10.0, 10.1
PAC rom
Padawan
Blackstar Blackjelly, 2 different versions
Thanks.
Jellybean Sandwich is really fantastic. It's based on ICS, so if you require Jellybean specific features it might not be for you.

How would one "qualify" their opinion with "crash frequency" if the rom they are using doesn't crash? There are many more roms than the ones you have listed.
Also, it has been my exprience that the 4.3 roms are very stable.

I also second Jellybean sandwhich. It's great for stability, and since you would like to know to what extent I mean "stable" then this is what I mean...this ROM has NEVER crashed or rebooted on me, and for countless other users. It is an ICS based rom, with added jellybean features. It's a lightweight ROM, with not as many features as say AOKP, but many of those features can be added with "Xposed Mod" if you've ever used it. So you get the "speed" of jellybean, with the absolute stability of ICS. I highly recommend you try it out. People who have had trouble with the ROM (there are very few) have all induced the problems on their own, or probably have faulty hardware. I can vouch that if you wipe clean, and flash correctly everything will work right out of the box, except USB mount (which there is a fix to make it work), and a bug that gives you and "sd card damaged" notification when nothing is really wrong.
EDIT: If you want a fast touchwiz based ROM that is not necessarily Jellybean. I recommend Novena ROM. It's an older ROM but one of the fastest ROMs you can get for our phone. You may have to look on the second page in the development section as it hasn't been updated in months
Go to an ICS rom if you want speed and stability. No matter what anyone on these forums will say, you cannot, cannot, cannot find speed and stability in ANY jb rom. Some may have stability, but lack speed. If you just use them [jb roms] for a while, you can forget that they aren't fast and become accustomed to them, but if you touch an ICS ROM or a newer galaxy phone, you'll quickly be reminded that you're delusional.
both Touchwiz Rom's are stable. they are rocks and will not give you a random reboot. if you have read like you said, than you may have even seen one of several postings in the Padawan tread. if you haven't.......p355-378 is a good read and will lay out some solid fundamental settings which would lead you to nirvana.
many also seem to overlook one 4.2 rom, as even I did for the longest time. Sons of Android or SOA is the ONLY 4.2 rom out there that I got no randoms with and did not need to seek an alternate kernel.
those are just 2 roms. everyone will tell you, every phone is a bit different. finding a rom that is going to satisfy everyone the same. its like voting for a President now and days. you don't really vote for the one you want anymore, its voting for the lesser of two evils. everybody knows, you cant have good without evil.
you are getting some good personal opinions here. it sounds like you know what your looking for, but you have yet to decide as to what you are willing to tolerate. we all tolerate something for the rom that we want. what evil are you willing to tolerate? only you can answer
me........stability is what I seek, and lack of some bells and whistles is what I tolerate. as mentioned previously, I get some of that back with Xposed and keep my stability.
good luck my friend
Honestly, I'm using a stock deodexed/debloated ROM. Works just fine for me.
SkeletonKey, Padawan, JellyBeer, Prophylactic are all also great ones that I personally used a lot.
Your mileage may vary though.

I've been on Revolt for 2 weeks and no crashes. The only 'bug' is that sometimes when you press PWR to activate the phone, the capacitive buttons highlight but the screen stays blank. Press PWR twice (once to turn 'off' and again to turn back on) and you'll see the lock screen.
I was playing with the tweaks a lot, so this 'bug' could just be from something I did. Other than that it's blistering fast compared to Bell stock (yes, I'm on Bell too and feel your pain) and I'd recommend it to anyone.

The current beanstalk is smooth and stable.
There is also a new 4.3 ROM in the Q&A section that has been extremely stable on my phone the past two days. The kernel built into the ROM is a version I beleive of the Cl3Kener kernel and can be OC'd and what not. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448069

I'm looking for a rom that is similar to the Look of MIUI (obviously nothing will be very similar) but maybe something resembles it in some ways. I've recognized that there are 2 tpos of roms, the ones that follow the generic, gingerbread frame, or ICS frame (aokp, unamed, phonebricker, ICSrewed, CM7/9 etc.) and then MIUI, who kinda does their own design. I've been partial to MIUI ever since I laid my hands on it.
Reason why I'm asking for a look-a-like is because I've been running the scottish one for some time (1.11.9) but she's had the no service bug issue for some time now where everytime I attempt to make a call, 80% of the time it'll lose service and it takes like 4 tries or so till my call goes through. Unacceptable. Yet I can't keep myself away from the build. It's just so speedy. Wish I could have a more recent build for my I777 but I can't find one anywhere. I've also tried a million builds for the regular MIUI, 2.2.3 V2 being the most recent one I could find (I believe that's the most recent? I literally searched for hours), but this build also has the same call service drop bug. Can't stand it.
Can anyone help with my situation? Currently running MIUI V4 ICS, and it's sweet and all but it's wrecking my brain with how slow it isss . Anything similar to MIUI or help with a fix or newer version. Mucho appreciated!!!
Btw I'm no noob to flashing, have flashed at least 20 different roms and all, just wondering if there is anything I missed...in terms of what I'm looking for. Cus I hate settling.

Yeah I'm really looking for more than just a launcher though. I'm already aware of the creation of MIUI launcher and that's sweet but it doesn't encompass settings themes and notification draw down etc. I'm not super picky about that but I'd prefer everything to be uniform...so not gonna go with that method.

Duddeeeeeeeeee. Just went back through it and found AdyScorpius' version of MIUI. I'd gone through that before but I guess I missed this version. If it's anything like Galnet I'm gonna be soooooo happy. I'm gonna flash it now!! So excited hahah. I'm a speed freak, need my lag free interface, otherwise I get annoyed >.>

Hahah idk, I was reading up on all these bugs that I haven't really heard of in the general MIUI builds. I'm using it though and it's snappy pappy. Except going back from a conversation message, to just the conversation list. It reverts quickly, but the text doesn't load as quick as the transition. Annoyanceeeee lol. Idc though...sorta. Is good though. Is real good. Wondering if it's worth bumpin up to ICS V4 cus I didn't realize RIUI and AdyScorp were making roms like this. Trying to decide whether upgrading is worth the stupid notification swipe or not. So annoying.

MIUI sucks because it is so slow and in development. The only thing that is great about it is it's interconnected community and even app. Which is all JUST SHOW if you know how to flash your own ROMs.
If you want speed, battery, and best overall flawlessness I suggest: shostock!

I have nothing against all the Samsung Touchwiz based Roms. I just plain don't like em. I have two things that I need personally, and that is speed, and an appealing look/design. Although CM7/CM9 can have a...functional/sophisticated look to them, they aren't quite as unique and sophisticated as the MIUI themes. Namely, CM is all very square and proper, while MIUI seems to be a little more accommodating if you will. I like to speed through things, and I'm particular about the way I do things. For example: when texting someone I like to send a text, then go back to the conversation list, so that when I get a new text I can see who it was from. I used UnNamed rom for a little bit (a month maybe) - and also tried ShoStock because I'd heard a lot about that too. I flashed it, but it basically seemed to be the same thing. Anyway when using unnamed there was obvious lag interface between the message system when I'd press back twice really quick after sending a text (once to close keyboard, once to close keyboard, another to go back to conversation list). MIUI is more smooth in it's transition and seems to have not necesarilly more poignant scirpting but mayhaps faster. I like MIUI's notification bar and status bar. I like how the notifications have a page and I can click my wifi, data, airplane mode, gps, rotation, and brightness all on the same page, without having to swipe left or right to find more. Mostly I'm a fan of the themes of course, since they simply look awesome. If you care so much move to AOKP, it's better than any Samsung Touchwiz Rom I've ever used, for that type of person. I love AOKP, but I can't seem to stand the crude looking toggles/switches, and the damn launcer (all 3 of them). I find app drawers to be very unnecessary (my own personal opinion - plenty of interpretations there). But I'm willing to further discuss this if you want haha. No mean to be insulting but you basically started the engagement
Guys,
I wonder there's a cusom ROM comparison thread on this forum.
Can't make my mind on what to try, and have little time for extensive experiments.
Any known caveats with specific ROMs? Do they support specific features like S-Pen, HDMI output, dock modes, etc?
All of that is found in the OP of each rom. Sorry, but nobody can say one rom is best, because it is purely opinion based. And if you don't have the time to experiment with what's best for you, you probably don't have time to rom your phone at all.

It is quite fast, only problem I have come to is there is no overclocking. Have tried other ROMS but this is by far the best one out there. You need to try this...

No, but it does mean that if you ask the question of 10 people, you'll get 10 different answers back. Some people will flash a new ROM, not have a reboot in 24 hours, and consider that "stable". It doesn't sound like the OP's brother will care about a rooted phone or running custom ROMs, so reverting it back to stock will probably be best for him.
Agreed.....
Stock phone would likely be best in this application...g
BUMP.
I haven't had time but am on a week long vacation and really want to do this now. Stock is not really the answer I want. I would like to know the most stable ROM made that keeps all the Samsung apps and S Pen usability, but even more than that is running Jelly Bean. Can anyone point me to which posts to look at and decide, or just give me their opinion on them if they use them. And what is the best kernel for that, cause I would like to overclock. I will start looking myself, but would love to hear some opinions, not just "stick to stock". I have ran many, many ROMs over the years that were pretty stable without being stock. I am just out of touch with the Note 1 as I have had the Note 2 for awhile and hadn't done anything to my Note 1 in quite some time. I believe I was running Paranoid Android (charging it now) but would prefer a closer to stock based ROM. Thanks. I would rather have Jelly Bean over the Samsung apps and S Pen apps, so the most stable or Jelly Bean ROMs would be good to know.

I cant offer you a JB stock build for our note 1, because that build does not exist.
Since kernel source for JB has not been released, we are forced to use the JB framework blobs, combined with a modified ICS kernel.
This leaves us a broken rom, that has many working features, and is for the most part stable. But like all custom builds, leaves us with some bugs.
The "leave it stock" statement is not meant to be offensive. It simply is the truth at this point, as we have no official, "stable" JB builds. Although this site does offer many high quality JB variant builds. And no one person can tell you the best one, as our usage habits differ so greatly. You simply need to read the threads, and base your opinion on the user reports from the threads.
It is our hope that Samsung will release an update for us, and open the door on some amazing JB work. but until that happens, we will have bugs, and broken functionality.
I use a very nice ICS build on occasion, as I feel that it offers the best performance, balanced with a feature rich rom.
FlappJaxxx UCLF6 build #12 is my top pick at the moment.
Unfortunately, the rules prevent my linking the rom directly for you, as the developer is no longer on XDA. but his works can be found at rootdev.org in it's complete form. and I for one feel that until we see an official update, no better ICS/ JB variant work can be found than his.
and I'm sure that if/when the update comes, the same will be said for his quality of builds in the JB framework and beyond.
He has true talent for building outstanding code. And you are well served using his wares. I hold much respect for Flappjaxxx, despite his leaving XDA. And I'm greatful to have his work at my disposal.
Good luck in your search, and happy flashing.....g

Thanks for the reply. I remember Flappjaxxx. I will definitely take a look at this. I know all ROMs have problems. Just looking for a more stable than others one that is more up to date than just stock. Thanks, will give it a try.

And use the UCLF6 modem.....g
I'd recommend ptmr3's Padawan V8 7005 Base OR Padawan 5.1 UCLF6 . I've been running Padawan ROMs for 5 months and they all have been pretty stable. Take a look! :good:
Flapjaxxxx's FJKang is really stable, along with his h0tcakez kernel. It's 4.2.2 JB, too.
One of my favorite roms is definitely AOCP 4.1.2. Not the latest jb but by far one of the most stable roms I've ever used.

Yes, but the 4.1.2 build. That one is 4.2.2 and while it is pretty stable I still find the 4.1.2 version to be a bit more solid. There's a link to older builds in that thread I believe.
I am not an expert. I know very little about these ROMs.
I AM A USER.
I always look for a stable but capable, and fast ROM. I love some of the freedoms these flashes give to me, and some of the "flow" of using my phone is better when stupid stuff is turned off and productive stuff is turned on and preinstalled.
Everyone is different and that is why many EXPERTS here will suggest trying each one.
For me, I do NOT like flashing. I do it when I feel there is a reasonable step forward or I hit issues and support dwindles for my current ROM.
All that said... Today...
I am pretty happy with flapp jaxxx and jellybeer.
Good luck. Hope this helps! Just my simple perspective... From a USER.

I have been debating on rooting in order to get the super necxus project rom(you can youtube it) What im looking for is good reason on why I should root my s3 and why I shouldnt. I know if I do it will void warrenty ect, That does not bother me. What iam worried about is the phone slowing down, Losing battery life, crashing, and bricking. And lastly whats nightly version mean?

First of all welcome to the forums and we'll done for leaving Apple lol.
Nightly is a term given for a Rom that is released every night.mostly new mods and tweaks to improve or intend to improve on from the last nightly.these are seen as betas and every now and again a stable or milestone version will be released.
There is no real reason why you should root. It's whether you want to benefit from having full system control or not that you would do it. It's up to you.
Flashing roms such as super nexus does have its downside as it's built from open source. As Samsung do not release all of their sources some parts are taken from the open source project. This means they do not always take full advantage of the hardware. An example of this is the camera in aosp/aokp/cm roms is not as good as the stock camera in touch wiz roms.
Battery life is also reported to be better in stock Roms than on aokp/aosp/cm and from personal experience I'd have to agree.
Hope this helps a little.
There is a lot that can be done when rooted but if you're not fussed about messing with the system then dont do it.

Rooting on it's own will not brick, slow down or loose battery life etc, it's what you do with the phone after you root that can do this, things like overclocking will affect battery, undervolting and underclocking will affect performance, but what you can do after rooting is things like use faster fix to slightly increase gps fix time, you can block ads, you can modify any system file etc etc, you can essentially do anything.
Latest Nightly is a term used for the latest version of CyanogenMod, which is an aftermarket firmware (custom ROM) new versions are built on their servers every night hence the name Nightly.

Tank you Drew, The CM10.1, How smooth is that compared to the stock os on my s3?
Aosp looks considerably better than the stock firmwares also known as TouchWiz (Samsung's ghastly user interface)
But aosp-based roms for this phone sucks plain abs simple because Samsung doesn't hand out the source code for their SoC (System on a chip)

CM10.1 is very smooth and in my opinion even smoother compared to Stock TouchWiz. Just flash it and if you for some reason don`t like it, you can always go back to a Stock TouchWiz ROM. There are plenty to choose from here at XDA. Oh and don`t ask what`s the best ROM around here, just try them out yourself
Oh and if you deside to Root and to flash a ROM on your device then read every little detail on how to do it. I`ve seen plenty of cases here, where people screwed up their devices because they flashed wrong stuff on their phone.

Its considerably smoother! If CM10.1 is hot butter, then TouchWiz is cold syrup.

It is smooth but as theshawty had pointed out it's not as good as it could be due to Sammy.
If you want a mix of both worlds you would do better looking for a stable stock based Rom and then theming it to suit. There isn't much to gain from flashing cm atm. If you want the launcher just download nova, apex or halo as these are the same as stock Google launcher used in cm builds.

Rooting itself does not do much difference unless you flash roms. I suggest you try Cyanogenmod, AOKP for starters. Then you can go with others like RootBox, PAC man ROm or ParanoidKangdroid which for me are the best there are. Other ROMs like Carbon and Liquidsmooth are pretty good too.
I suggest you download Goomanager first and browse between compatible Roms. Also learn how to do Nandroid backups and regular. Trust me, you're gonna need them.

As mentioned in previous posts cyanogen based roms FOR S3 in my opinion are not as smooth as expected. If u install a custom samsung based rom and a good kernel, i find that they are as smooth or sometimes smoother than cyanogen. Also the latest full stock samsung roms and kernels are really smooth and battery friendly.
As u dont have an issue in rooting. u should try all roms n decide.
And rooting does have many benefits. Especially the audio mods will completely change the audio quality of your phone. ACID with boeffla sound control is amazing. Get good quality earphones also to experience this.
[Q] What ROM do you guys use as your Daily Driver?
Provide the hyperlink to the explanation/download page of the listed ROM.
Give your reasons.
List length of time on current ROM.
This Poll is created from the list of ROMS in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297370 [GUIDE] Official List of Roms, Mods, Kernels, Root, etc. All credit for the list goes to theidoctor and all Devs of ROMS!
I've been on liquidsmooth for about 1-2 weeks.
I chose it because it seemed like it was stable, smooth and awesome.
It ended up being stable, smooth and awesome.
No complaints so far.
It's the only ROM I've tried so far and I'm going to keep it for a while.
I'm interested in trying others, though, but for now I'm cool with liquidsmooth.

I'm on Eclipse 1.5 for about 2 weeks now. I like it because of the blackout apps. Its still mdk but Im sure he's working on porting it to me7. Its a very stable ROM and he's in the process of another great build now. His ROM along with Team Blackout updater is awesome. I've tried me7 Roms and other aosp Roms and I like how his provides bits of TW and aosp features together. This is his TW ROM.

Ask theidoctor to add it to his List. I just made this POLL off of his comprehensive list of what is available and stable...

I use Google Edition Pure by Dubbsy and hlxanthus.
I started with the modified version for a month or so, then I played around with PAC-Man ROM RC1 by Papa Smurf151 for a few days to test out a ton of custom features in one go. Some of them were quite good, but I got tired of all the options and customisations and just wanted stock Google again . So now I am on Google Edition Pure.
Being able to go to HALO and Pie to hardware buttons to the soft navbar (mod by hlxanthus) and all around again has really helped my form my UI tastes. Turns out I prefer Google's on-screen buttons, and one of the reasons why I bought the S4 was because of its hardware buttons!
I sold my iPhone and got the S4 on the weekend that the new update rolled out. I was able to get it home and root it and flash the GE ROM all on the first day. The only bugs have I've noticed have been the missing 4G bars (fixed), garbled carrier name (unimportant), and a few recent build glitches that I think are fixed now as well (MTP botched and random reboots). On the other had, I tried installing Google Wallet before, but I ended up having to reflash the ROM. Now this latest version has Wallet working out of the box.
Stock ME7 unrooted. Not by choice obviously, but to be honest with force gpu rendering it's incredibly fast and smooth for a stock experience. Great battery too.

Is my ROM not good enough for this list?
Kind of odd considering my ROM is the ONLY VZW ROM to feature Blocking Mode and the first customized ME7 ROM, not too mention seem to be one of the most active DEVs..

Flashed over to Official PAC RC1 yesterday, and it's pretty awesome. I have yet to experience an issue, and it runs like a dream. I ran an older PAC on my Incredible2, and this just further cements my enjoyment of it. I'm sure I'll miss the TW camera soon, but that's what AndyBones BoneStock is for :good:
Also, forcing people to vote is probably going to get the thread locked as a "best ROM" thread. Not to mention the list is missing quite a few options, even those found on XDA - PAC has been around since we first got root.

I saw that in your op. I commented on that ROM/Mod/Kernel list thread, as I didn't realize it was still being updated.
"Daily Driver" is a term people throw around way too loosely, and it means different things to different people. For me, a daily driver is a ROM I can use for my normal activities without major bugs adversely affecting it. Longevity, to me, is irrelevant because there are quite a few ROMs that meet my criteria. I don't think I'm a "crack-flasher" so nightlies aren't my thing, but I've gotten pretty fast at setting up on a new ROM. So even though a ROM may run great for me, I like to change it up every now and then. I loved Beans' and DarkSlide - and would consider those daily drivers. I am now on PAC, and so far it meets all of my requirements. I'll probably switch to BoneStock in the next couple weeks, since ME7 is very smooth and the TW camera is a nice improvement over AOSP.
Im using HellsRom and its great. Pure stock and that's the way I like it for now. I havent found any bugs yet. Everything works great and very fast.

No Omega, Pacman, or Revolt?
I'm currently using Hyperdrive but it's my first custom ROM and I'm not too thrilled with it. Battery life seems a little worse than stock and TouchWiz just feels bloated naturally-- all the S4 stuff doesn't seem to work at all? Smart scroll, smart stay, etc?
Hyperdrive for me has been quirkier and actually a tad slower than stock. I don't mean to blame it but it's my observation based on the options I chose upon install, etc. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid ROM for sure, however I'm definitely not tied to it yet.
