Got what I needed... Thank you! - G2 General

Got what I needed... Thank you!

So, if I knew how to do this, I would... time for some google-fu!

If you are rooted its as simple as installing a root level file explorer and find the file.
The can be located in /data/local/tmp/ota and other locations
I generally just do an adb pull /data ./data if I cannot find it.
Sometimes they dont put zip on the end of the file to make it more confusing.

I posted a pretty comprehensive walkthrough in the development section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011623
I recommend you look through there first. now, what you've done wrong: The files don't go in your sd card, they need to be put in the platform tools folder.
Post in my thread if you have anymore trouble, or if it helps you.
I would post there but I dont have 10 posts yet.
I don't have all of the files on my memory card only the one where you change it to p5000 or whatever it's called the problem I'm having is when inam doing this
Now, navigate to your home folder and there is a text file there for you. Pretty neat, eh?
Now, we need to navigate to adb. Go to your android-sdk-mac_x86 folder, open it. Now, go back to terminal, type cd and drag the folder Platform-tools to the terminal window. You should see a green dot with a plus sign in it, that means you can add the folder to the terminal window. It should read something like this:
Code:
cd /Users/Your Computer's Name/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_x86/platform-tools
If you moved the android-sdk-mac_x86 folder (Like I did) after downloading it, it will only be slightly different. (My folder was in my home folder, so it just says /users/my computer/android-sdk-mac_x86/platform-tools)
Once you do this, you are ready to begin
Once I Follow these directions above I am getting thus error
Jays-Mac-Proplatform-tools experience$ ./adb push psneuter /data/local/
cannot stat 'psneuter': No such file or directory
I am at a loss. Please help!
bump. Need some help figuring this out. Been reading the the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1011623 and I still can't figure this out. Any help would be appreciative
i used corey streeter's walkthrough over at androidcentral.com...it could not have possibly been easier if you follow directions exactly...there is a video too

Just to confirm, psneuter, busybox and misc.img go into your platform tools folder, not your sd card. You aren't actually pushing anything, and you're receiving that error because there is nothing to push. Now, if you put the files from the exploit folder into your platform tools folder, it will work.
Good luck man I hope you get it to work...It was my first time with rooting a phone and I didnt think it was too hard except for the time it took to get it all done
the error msg you are getting is because the files you are trying to push are not in the directory you think they are.

That did it! I am officially rooted and i am making my first back up with clockwork. Thanks so much!
I love the forums on xda! I finally have a rooted thunderbolt. Now to decide what rom to load! Hopefully cm7 comes out for the Thunderbolt soon. Loved that on my incredible.
I find myself in the same boat, terminal replies "no such directory"
q: I know that the OP's directions explicitly say to download Android SCK...revision 3 <-- has this changed to just the platform tools?
the reason I ask, I have all the files dl and in the folders that sidek1ck says to, but CANT complete Step 5. Setup terminal for ADB. I open up terminal, type the letters "cd", drag and drop the "platform tools" folder to no avail..."no such directory exists"
I simply CANNOT find where I am going wrong here
Please guide me, as this guide seems to work seemingly flawless for everyone else

Trying to copy nv_data.bin and FAILING

I been playing with my phone for a few days now trying to get it to work and I haven't had much success although I have been learning a hole bunch and now able to load any rom onto my phone easily and flash kernels and such with ease...
The situation is that I received a phone from a friend SGSII I have never had a rooted phone and it came pre rooted, never knew much about it as it is my first Android phone and now love it
never knowing I had to do these things like "backup EFS directory" and such as I know now... anyhow, a few days ago what has happened is I have a stock rom + CF-Root and my phone all a sudden started telling me there is no IMEI and no SIM card present.. after much research, flashing of roms, kernels, bricking the phone, re flashing and so on and so foth....... xda-developers is a FANTASTICK site full of useful information btw now I'm still at the same point but a lot more knowledgeable, I have learned that the problem lies with my efs folder and have found a .nv_data.bak file that is dated dec 31 of last year, at this point it is my only so called backup and hope that it will restore proper functions of the phone, as per some of the guides and other posts and questions I have learned to do this.. so what I have done was copy using ADB my files to my sdcard folder renamed my nv_data.bin to nv_data.bak and my .nv_data.bak to nv_data.bin
also I have used root explorer to copy the hole efs folder to a location on my external sd card and used HC-kTool to make a backup of my efs folder
now I have been trying to use the command to copy my nv_data.bin file in the sdcard folder to my efs folder and it is not working as it gives me msges of write protected file or file exist canot copy... the commands I have been trying to use are
cp /sdcard/nv_data.bin /efs/nv_data.bin
cp /sdcard/nv_data.bin /efs/
I have tried also
rm command to remove the file but nothing has been working...
one thing I should mention is that I have been connecting withough usb cable as I can't seem to connect with that I keep getting device not found so I been using the wireless adb function
abd connect "ip addressort"
I have tried installing the kies driver for usb and the google sdk drivers and none seem to work, in fact kies doesn't reconize my phone aswell... but Odin seems to function through my USB just fine.... not sure if that matters or not but trying to give as much info as possible
Thank you in advance for the help.... this is a great site with very knowledgeable ppl
permissions have to be reset as the back up does not copy the permissions. Use cwm recovery to reset the permissions.
Thank you very much for you quick response, however I have just tried that, booted into cwm recovery, went to advanced and reset permissions, rebooted my hone and still cannot copy the file
Try using a Root Explorer from the market.Connect via wifi obviously if your phone cant detect sim.Phone needs to be rooted.Give Root Explorer root permission and set to R/W from R/O and copy paste the nv.data files and IMEI to the efs folder in the root of your phone, reboot, boot to recovery and "fix permissions" and boot again.
sorry I guess I should of mentioned that aswell but thank you very much for the suggestion... I have tried to edit the file weather just delet it or overwrite or change permissions with Root Explorer and to no success.. also when I push the mount r/w button in the efs folder... nothing happens and the button stays as mount r/w
I found this.Maybe it will help.

Thank, I havent had time to read through them all but I will try tonight and see if I can come up with a solution... I will post here my findings weather they are good or bad..... but thank you very much for the info
I have read and tried and seen all those post, thankyou for the info the problem is still that I cannot modify my nv_data.bin file in any way... I cannot overwrite to it or anything using rootexplorer or adb or any other program... does anyone know of any other programs or command lines to strip the read only permissions on this file as it seems stuck on this and it's driving me insane lol
Gave up
I gave up and had it done professionally, they couldn't figure it out either and had to replace the phone.... Thank you all for the great help, even tho we didn't get it figured out it was great that help was provided
Thank you XDA-Developers your awesome!!

Vzw Razr /preinstall folder

Would it be much trouble to ask anyone who hasn't applied the ota yet to zip up the contents of /reinstall? I lost it by my own stupidity with safe strap and oat won't apply without its contents would be greatly appreciated.

Cool! Glad to help out!
Just wanted to let you know that it worked great. Thanks again
This will take care of any issues with installing the OTA:
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/251-rom-stock-odexed-rooted-rom-744-system/
So I'm getting the preinstall folder fail. I downloaded from the link above, but i can't get the contents into my preinstall folder. When i paste using root explorer, it acts like it's completing the action, but nothing happens. It is mounted r/w and i've tried changing permissions. Sorry if it's something really basic i'm missing.
*nevermind, got it. The folder was at max capacity.

[Q] Problem with Rooting 407 Rom

I have installed the Deodexed 407 Rom, and installed Streakmod Recovery and also installed superuser.zip, so in theory, from what I have read my streak should now be rooted.
But when I try and edit a file, the build.prop file in /system with Astro File Manager I alter some of the settings and save it, but when I reopen the file the changes had not been saved. I have tried seeing if I can change the permissions on the file, but without success.
I would be grateful if someone could assist me in where I am going wrong, hopefully it is something simple or a wrong setting that I am not quite doing correct.

You have to mount the system as ReadWrite and there was no need for a new thread. You should've posted in the rooting thread
Sorry, for not putting it in the rooting thread, but didn't want to clog a general rooting thread with a specific problem.
I have solved this now thanks, but not with Astro File manager as I still cannot seem to change the permissions with that app, but used advanced tools app instead.
Thanks again anyway.
Yes i had same problem trying do root operations with file expert. I used root file explorer instead. Weird thing being that even with rooting permissions ticked file explorer failed.
For most root-enabled browsers, just enabling root permissions won't give you write access. You'll need to find a second option to mount the /system directory as read/write. That's normally somewhere in the Settings menu or on the directory's long-press menu.

It's mainly dependant on the kernel, all custom kernels automatically mount system as RW and all stock kernels mount it as RO
At least root explorer tells you that it's read only if you attempt to modify it without remounting, I havnt used ASTRO in a long time so I cant comment on that
Root explorer better for me

Write files on system directory.

Hi all.
I'm trying to copy some files to the system partition after enabling write on read-only partitions and remounting it and everything is success, but when I restart the phone, files get deleted and partition back to original. I tried ES file explore and Total Commander.
Galaxy S2, cMIUI 2.10 JB
Hmm.. seems like a hard question!

Hey,
no not a hard question but a bit confusing
So the copy to system works without probs?
Do u have root-enabled on it?
U can try Solid explorer once, too, to be sure.
CHEERS
I enabled root explorer and I mounted the file system to be writable, yes I have a rooted phone.
I can copy to system root folders anything (media files), the files stay there until I reboot the phone then they disappear, they get deleted maybe? how to disable that?
Thanks

That listen like u have to save changes?!
Pls try the Solid explorer (for me the best explorer ever)
Copy files and have a look for root-acces request (should be asked for Solid, if it's new)
The copy/replace the file.

Thanks Hannibal for reply, I got no luck on doing it, they still get removed after reboot. Is there a way to flash these files that I want to copy to system as an update.zip?

Sure there's a way, but I can't help u with it, sorry.
With new Titanium Backup u can create flashable .zips but for sure only from isntalled apps.
Maybe u have a look at google. I remind for a tool which u just say what u wanna flash an it creates the flashable .zip.
Much success....
CHEERS
Edit: Sorry but couldn't answer u yesterday.
XDA had a prob for a while
