Can you access the card with any other explorer? How is the card formatted? I've never had any problem browsing to /mnt/extSdCard (remember, case sensitive).

Odd. Do you even see extSdCard when you navigate to /mnt? I'm trying to understand when you get the error.
Are you running a custom kernel or ROM?

Here's another option.
Launch Root Explorer
Press Menu and then Preferences
Scroll down to the General Preferences section
Press External SD Path
Enter /mnt/extSdCard as the path and press OK
Once you back out of the preferences a tab should show up to the card now.

What I would do is open root explorer and hit back until it closes. Open root explorer again scroll to /mnt then you should see extsdcard

That worked perfect, Thanks. Now one more question. I have been trying to install a different color keyboard through Safestrap but they keep failing. Someone said to rename my keyboard apk to the new keyboard apk. Is this fairly easy to do? I guess the hard part is finding the correct apk's.

Many of you must have tried to enable live wallpaper on Galaxy 3 by using the method given by other members of Xda the coding one but I guarantee I won't ask you to write any coding.
1. Just Root ur phone use z4root for android 2.1 and super one click root ur for android 2.2
2. Download Root Explorer. (u can get it free on 4 shared or other site)
3.Download the attachment file (sdcard.rar) and extract it on ur sd card
4.Open root explorer allow super user permission now on ur left hand side is a button named "mount r/w" press it now it will show "mounted as r/w "(go to preference and select sort order name (desc) for convince in finding required folder)
5.Now go to sd card copy "LiveWallpapersPicker.apk" to "/system/app/" (check that it is mounted as r/w)
6.Now again go to sd card and select "libRS.so" and "librs_jni.so" using multi select and copy them to " /system/lib/" and then just restart ur phone.
7.And if u have done it right enjoy with live wallpaper on ur galaxy 3.

how long does your phone last with this
Not sure how to better ask than to state my intent. The added storage of internal nand (as /sdcard in most roms) isn't worth the trouble it creates with doing full migrations from one rom to the next so I'm thinking I want to edit scripts (init.d, fstab and what-not) so that the internal storage just isn't used and my sdcard is OR so that internal is mounted inside /sdcard as /int_temp or something like that.
What I want to know though is if anyone out there knows of a reason this would be inadvisable? In other words, is there anything I'm likely to break? Any reason I can't just shell in from recovery, set things up, and try it?
Also, to deal with apps that don't rely on the APIs correctly, I was thinking of mounting as both /sdcard and /sdcard2. Any reason that could cause trouble? Ideally I would also edit the rom so that properly written apps will always use SDcard over internal storage too.
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE:
2012-03-06T20:08-0700: So far I've done no harm and by simply modifying /etc/vold.fstab to the following, I've swapped internal/external, but it's a complete swap so the rom now reports 29GB total phone storage and 10GB SD card storage. I'm guessing it's the ramdisk that contains the references that vold.fstab uses which define what's "phone" and what's "sdcard". I tried swapping single parts of vold.fstab entries and storage broke so it doesn't appear to be standalone in that sense (doesn't have the meta data to indicate what's phone and what's sdcard).
Code:
dev_mount sdcard2 /mnt/sdcard/ext_sd 37 /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.1/mmc_host/mmc0
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard auto /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.3/mmc_host/mmc2
I can work on it later this week. I think it can be done. I just need time to mess with it.
/sdcard/sd_ext
Thanks for the quick reply Con. Should it take much more than init.d and/or fstab changes? I have no doubt you're as/more busy with Android mods than I am with my other projects so I'd rather give this a go and hit you up with targeted questions than wait AND put it all on you. If you're cool with that, I'll give it a go right now while I'm between roms.

Lol that exists already. Sdcard is really just emmc I think. It is needed for downloads and other system processes that would clog the sdcard. You can access the external card through sd_ext

Guess I wasn't clear enough. I know it's there, but /sdcard is internal storage (EMMC) and not sdcard which is what I'd prefer it to be. Also, /sdcard/sd_ext is irrelevant except that a ROM settings allows apps using the proper API to discover that the sdcard is mounted there (95% sure that's true anyway) and that's needed BECAUSE /sdcard isn't actually the sdcard. Pretty silly IMO.

superchilpil, curious but does Tapatalk have an option to get rid of that sig it's adding to your posts? I've been thinking of adding support to my forums so I'm curious but the last time I tried to use it, it seemed like more trouble than just using a browser so I haven't explored it fully from the client-side.
See op-post for update.
Here is the file that I edited and use everytime I flash a new rom. It swaps SDcard and EMMC. What you have to do is copy the file in the RAR archive to the /etc folder and overwrite the one that is there. Just keep in mind that after you copy this file that the EMMC is not accessible with USB mount. I have not figured out how to do that exactly. Reboot after file overwrite.

The question ive asked many times before about this is: why does the internal ram have to be tied to the sdcard via ext_sd? Cant it be its own independent emmc folder or something?

i did reboot opened google maps and it showed exactly where i was. And the problem that bothered me was me keeping gps turned off all the time only to find that it would turn itself on which I do not like. I want to disable it permanently because I don't think its nessecary for basic phone and web service. I dont feel that my movements should be tracked for any reason it's just weird! If I am correct the phone service is done through the wireless connection not gps?
Shouldn't u prefer changing ROM?
Problem solved and closed! The original instructions are correct & results are as originally claimed in first reply to the op. For some reason it didn't delete properly the first time,I fixed this by restoring my backup & re-attempting. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED
Well I could have helped, but I'm an optimus one user, so I don't know which one is a stable optimus v rom...asking an optimus v user will be better...
ES file explorer isn't mounting system as writeable. Can't copy any file to system or change any files within system using the apps root explorer. Anyone else have this issue? Anyone know a solution?
Please dont suggest using another app. I have tried that and they do work. I just prefer ES.

I had the same issue, and ended up buying Root Explorer. No idea why. I couldn't even find the option to make it writeable like I used to be able to.

I noticed this too. Has anyone tried previous the version to see if that makes a difference?
Update: I tried the older version and it tries to run a test which fails, resulting in not being able to use that feature. I would assume the same test is failing in the new version.

Not sure, but maybe related to OP's issue: after rooting, using ES File Explorer version 3.0.4 (dl'd from play store), I can't use the built in root explorer. After selecting "Root Explorer" from the menu, after a delay (appoximately 20 seconds) I get the "Sorry, test failed. This feature cannot run on your phone." message in the attached screenshot.
Interestingly, I was able to access ES's root explorer while still on the pre-release kernel, before flashing back to the stock kernel.
The new ES is a little different. Pull up the fast access menu and open the tools tab on the left. from there, tap on root explorer, mount R/W, then change the bubbles to RW. I had to do this to edit my build.prop so I assume this is what you're asking. Hope this helps!

same here. ES's new update sucks anyway. i've used ES since day one, and with the new update, every single time you wanna do root things you have to mount system....EVERY time. the old one would stay mounted. it's very annoying.
i started using root browser or something..the free one.
I was reading through some other posts on a different thread and I came to the understanding it may have to do with the file system format or kernel. I would test a kernel but not sure if I can easily get back to stock as I don't want to lose functionality. Can anyone else test a different kernel to see if that works?

I ran into this exact same problem with ES File Explorer. I thought it might have to do with using SuperSU, but I haven't been brave enough to downgrade to Superuser.
As with others, I've gotten very comfortable with Root Explorer. I now only use ES to copy between the local file system and Windows shares.

Now that I go back into the app a second time, it doesn't seem to ask SuperSU for permissions and /data (for example) is empty.
I'm still not 100% convinced I fully understand the new ES Explorer's root paradigm. In the old one I fell in love with, you enabled root with one simple checkbox and you had Root Explorer (kinda; I have both installed). In this latest major update, you have to pick Root from the side menu, after which you're prssented with a list of tools that I don't want/need. To browse as root, do I just hit Back to this helpful, unwanted list and start browsing? This is what I did during the first successful test of this test code, but it won't work a second time.

I found a couple different ways to disable to pop up, but it still has the 30 second or so delay before the MTP connects. The easiest one I found was rename or remove autorun.iso in / etc. folder. But like I said that doesnt make the MTP come any sooner. Hoping for a fix myself.

Yes for that method you do. But you can also disable the cd rom from inside windows device manager. Just have device manager pulled up, then attach usb cable, and when you see the Verizon cd rom show up in device manager right click and disable. This also will only prevent it from popping up, but there will still be a 30 second delay before MTP connects.
I deleted the drive letter of the Verizon Mobile partition from Disk Management. At least I wont see it on My Computer anymore...

I open the app, tap menu, tap tools, tap Root Explorer then navigate to the System\Etc folder but can't for the life of me find where to mount the file system R/W. I've checked all the options I can find and still not available. I have granted root access to ES File Explorer with SuperSU and verified it in SuperSU
I'm also seeing a message several seconds after selecting Root Explorer that reads "Sorry, test failed. This feature cannot run on your phone."
TIA

I just checked and es file explorer is doing the same thing with me. Out of curiosity I tried the old style es file explorer and it also failed. Not sure why. It worked great on my S3. I use "root browser" on all my devices and love it. Theres a free version on the play store. And there use to be a way to get full free version from the dev here in xda.

Its a Verizon thing. I had the same issue when I had the Verizon S3. They could have at least set it up so that once you installed the Verizon programs that it would stop popping up, and allow instant access to the MTP. Im sure there is someway to edit a file or something that would bypass the 30 second delay.

I've checked all the options I can find and still not available. I have granted root access to ES File Explorer with SuperSU and verified it in SuperSU
I'm also seeing a message several seconds after selecting Root Explorer that reads "Sorry, test failed. This feature cannot run on your phone."
TIA
