hey, so i have ran pretty much every "jelly bean" rom out there for this phone for about 2-2.5 months. maybe less. note sure..
anyway, the battery has been horrible! on every rom.. I have a 2700 mAMP battery, and a regular Samsung battery. I have to use both once a day for this phone.. now I have no idea what is making the phone loose percentage after percentage of battery as fast as it has for me, but everytime i post i get about 0 luck from people that either have the same issue, or just people saying they have heard it a million times. i probably should have put this in the "Q&A" thread, but maybe i forgot. can someone, preferably more than one, help me out here?? i don't get how other people say they have 8 or more hours of screen on time with half the battery left. it just doesn't make since. I am loving the android system. but this could be anything! the apps in the background. the kernel, maybe I didn't clean my cache or something. i can't raise my brightness up to far or it'll drain my battery, jamie in the paranoid thread said he had his batter on 100 percent and had excellent battery. so I'm far from confused here. do I need to get another phone, or what. very much apprentice the help from as many people as possible. I love my phone, but I hate that i have to focus on using two battery a day with this phone.
Same here battery draining pretty quick on all jb ROMs.

Battery usage is highly subjective..
It's nearly impossible to determine a baseline Usage expectancy, simply due to the untold number of variables that drain the battery.
We know the obvious power users ....the display, wifi, data ..
But it gets far more difficult to track the Usage after that.
We know that JB is not optimized for our device, but it's getting better, and until we see a true JB kernel with the rom matched to it, the battery is going to suffer.
Then of course we have the many services that users run, along with countless apps ...
Long story short ....maybe a more stable choice would work better? ?
Like ICS, At least until JB calms down a bit ...
I'm actually running Saurom as I type this ...and my battery life is excellent.

to get better battery turn brightness to lowest usable setting, turn off sync for any non essential apps, turn off soft key lights, flash a kernel that lets you under volt and under clock, try different govonors and io schedulers, turn off gps, put in airplane mode when not using. these should help. keep in mind cell signal strength will also impact battery and 4g will kill it faster then 3g. i am on cm9 stable under clocked to 1.18 undervolt all by 25mv( not much change but i like to be safe) ondemand and sio and get amazing battery life.
What's your screen-on time? 4 hours is the close to the limit on ANY rom for our Notes. You have to make sure it's not some sort of confirmation bias going on here.

thank you so much man! i actually went to at&t and they mentioned that too. they said the kernel im using isn't fully optimized for the phone yet. other words. the phone wont support it. he said basic stock ics is the best thing to do now. he also said. these forums are for phones from Europe as well. not just for AT&T in the us. again, the ROMS these devs are making are not supported for the phone, and is kinda like a mimic of something its not. he said jelly bean was out, but i don't know where to get it. can someone tell me how to install ICS, because when I download it, and use KIES, it installs the system, but never fully completes the process.

There are many great ICS roms, and you will find that your phone is "MUCH" better running on the software that was intended for it..

I'm in the same boat as manel, never gotten anywhere above 2h on screen time. Maybe additional 10m or so. Figured it was normal lol

Battery life is purely subjective. No two people will have the same experience.
Have you used an app like CPU spy to make sure the phone is going into deep sleep? Rogue apps keeping the phone in a wake lock can seriously affect battery life, but its hard to say if anybody's apps are doing that, because we all use different apps and there's no list of apps that keep a wake lock, so you need to use something like CPU spy to see if you are going to deep sleep when your screen is off.
Related to apps as well, don't use any task killers or constantly kill apps when you exit them. A lot of people think killing apps is necessary when it completely is not. Android, since donut or eclair, manages its RAM very well, so that when a properly written app (ie. It's not keeping a wake lock) is in RAM, it's just in a frozen state not using any CPU cycles. Constantly killing well written apps hurts battery life, because restarting the app fresh is much more processor intensive than pulling a frozen app out of RAM. Plus you don't have to deal with annoying loading/splash screens.
Also, like others have said, using the lowest brightness possible, and turning off sync for any unnecessary apps will help battery life. GPS doesn't matter so long as you don't keep something running that uses it. If an app isn't using GPS, then GPS isn't using battery. I always leave my GPS on and do not notice a difference compared to turning it off. If you're paranoid about GPS leave it off, but it's annoying to have to turn it on every time you want to use an app that requires it. You can also disable location access in most apps like Facebook, twitter, etc where you don't need GPS really, and that will make leaving it on even better. If you don't use GPS much anyways, leave it off.
Like somebody said, your cell signal can greatly affect your performance, so use WiFi whenever possible, and even put a data toggle in your pulldown so you can disable cell data when you don't really need it. WiFi in general uses less battery than cellular data, so I use it whenever possible.
I've also noticed that how you use your screen on time also has a great effect on battery life. When I have extended lengths of constant screen on time where the phone starts heating up and whatnot, I see much less battery life than if I just use my phone here and there intermittently. Long stretches of screen on time stress the processor and battery heating them up and making them less efficient, where as short stretches allow the processor time to stay at a cooler, more efficient temperature. If you game at all on your phone, you've definitely experienced this, as you know that your phone heats up due to the extended lengths of screen on time and heavy processor usage. Gaming is a no-no if you're striving for better battery life.
With following those guidelines, my Note sees about 3.5 screen on time with JB on Gubment Cheeze. I would get around that on ICS as well, and I don't remember what it was on GB. Fellow testers and teammates for Gubment Cheeze have seen up to 4 hours and a little more even on JB, so it's definitely possible to have decent battery life on JB.
It really comes down to your own personal usage.

I was not aware of this info....many thanks for the heads up...I always supposed that since the ram was consumed with applications, that those apps were pulling CPU usage from the device...

Yep, no problem. If you go back to a touchwiz based ROM and go into the stock task manager, it shows you what's taking up RAM, as well as the CPU usage of each thing in the list. If the apps are working properly, pretty much everything will show very little to 0% CPU usage, and ones that are using it heavily will even be highlighted in yellow or red depending on their CPU usage %age. Unfortunately aosp based ROMs don't have that task manager, one of the things I miss from touchwiz.
Every time a non-techy friend buys a new android, it seems the overly aggressive sales rep that sold the phone to them 'helped' them get to know the phone and installed a task killer, specifically advanced task killer. I always just uninstall it without telling them and see how long it takes them to notice lol.
It's still useful in certain instances, for example if you have an app that doesn't run well but you still like/need to use, but in general practice android does a much better job of managing itself. Besides, if you have an app that you know runs poorly and hogs your processor in the background, but you still need to use it, with most aosp based ROMs you can set your phone so that long pressing the back button kills the current app, essentially making task killers useless.

This is true. What kind of signal strength do you get where you are at? Does your phone bounce back and forth to lte. I have noticed when i go from a strong signal to weaker signals or band switching a lot, my battery drains rapidly.
Use cpuspy, as mentioned, to verify you do see deep sleep. Also, i find if rooted, that seting the min speed to 192 helps quite a bit.
So I'm looking to try to get my phone running more efficiently. In respect to both battery life and overall running smooth. Honestly my phone just runs like crap... lots of lag (not horrible most times), and battery life lasts me to 5pm every day.
I have a feeling my biggest culprit is the constant running background apps. How the hell do I stop an app from always running? Things like facebook, scoremobile, wechat... and many more. All of these, I turned updates, refresh, notifications, everything possible off. I just want to be able to use the app when I open it. Yet even with turning everything off, they're still using up a ton of RAM and in the running apps list!
So I imagine things like this are my main culprit of poor battery life and performance.
Anything else I can do? Underclock?

Try a different kernel perhaps? Either that or play around with governors. Hopefully these can optimise CPU usage.
It might take a while to figure out how to balance CPU power with maximum battery life. It really is just about trial and error.
Biggest battery hog for me is the massive screen, so you could turn down brightness too. Google ways to save battery life on Android and see what the rest of the Internet suggests
Also try the app Wakelock Detector. (I think that's what it's called haha) see what is keeping your processor running and find out ways to stop processes eating your battery when it shouldn't.

So after having my phone for nearly a year (Razr Maxx) I'm starting to have extremely poor battery life. For example, this morning I left my house at 7:00 at 100%. Spent maybe 20 minutes looking at stuff on my phone, browsing a couple of webpages. Then spent about 20 minutes reading a book and listening to music. Now at 9:00am I'm at 70%.
I suspect that there is something that isn't working right on my phone... that I have some program (possibly malware) that is chewing up data or processor time or something. I'm looking for some kind of a utility that will monitor what's going on and is able to report what programs are accessing data and processor power. Anyone have a good suggestion?
If yor phone is rooted, try Greenify app.
Lower the brightness, turn off haptic, gps. Also install auto task killer.
That should make battery consuption a bit better.

First confirm if you have a damaged battery :
remove battery from phone and place on a flat table , if you give it a torque and it rotates means the battery is bulged
bulged battery must be replaced
if your battery is in proper
condition , to reduce battery consumption ,
freeze apps you barely use
remove unwanted apps , system or user
remove live wallpapers if any
decrease widget update frequency
install Ram manager app to see what is eating your ram.

I can't understand if this app is really effective or if it is a fake. In both cases, if you want to give your opinion can you justify it with technical considerations?
It's strange to see so many high ratings, but it is also strange that there are no tests or in-depth reviews.
Sorry for bringing a thread from the dead but I am also very curious as to how this app works (or if it does at all).
Such apps don't work.. They're usually fake and earn money through ads. Battery life is purely hardware and can't be increased by a software other than changing kernel features...

what a load of crap.
You can increase the length of your battery time betweeen charges by lessening the load on the cpu(which causes ups in voltage usage).
we reduce cpu load by reducing ram usage too.
also, turning the display brightness down and turning off unneeded features like bluetooth or wifi.
the kernel can be made more efficient like you said. so i agree there.

Trying to do that the battery app takes more battery by being in the background always. sometimes it also steals data.. There's no point you're better of without it.

Of course the battery does nothing.
thats what the settings > battery
function is for anyways. to see the resource hog of the system.
so it works in identifiying the problem.
but your right, the battery app is unnecessary since we already have a stock implementation.
but that wasn't my point. my point is that you can modify the userspace for more battery between charges.

At the end of day we agree that battery apps are not required... Android is pretty optimized by itself.
Decrease screen brightness and timeout it takes the highest amount of battery.

The original posting he said was that software does not have impact on hardware in that it can not fix physical damage on the battery such as dead cells.
Such apps are just fake.
I purchased a new phone and same day I installed repair battery life. It showed 8 low cells and one inactive. It claimed it will increase my battery life by 18% (WOW, LOL)
After that I tried again and it showed me all green cells.
I cleared the app's cache, cleared data and uninstalled the app.
Later on, I calibrated the battery with another app called "battery fix" which needs root and deletes batterystats.bin file
I once installed "repair battery life" and guess what? It showed again 8 low cells and one inactive.
It's just another fake crAPP

Then it also requests access to media, identity and accounts, which is suspicious given what the app claims to do.
Comments in the app-store just prove to me that placebos work. On the other hand, some people figured that if the "battery repair" is done, the app data is deleted and the app run again, it again shows the same amount of "problematic cells".

I strongly suspected myself this app is complete bull twaddle, but I was also curious so installed it just to see what it makes of the battery "analysis".
It magically 'fixed' the problem cells, but unlike you on a subsequent retest the previously 'faulty cells' had still be 'fixed'.
I wonder how this app is polling the 'cells'? Or is it just making up some fancy graphics and not actually doing anything at all under the hood?
I also wonder what would happen if I switched batteries or took the existing one out and in again? Maybe I'll try at some point.

In that time i first tryed it i had Galaxy 3 Apollo. Battery was so bad that percentage was going low when you were looking on it and after some short period of time phone just shutdown by itself.. I decided to try it so maybe i save money for new battery. With few shutdowns i finally did it and something happen. Battery didn't go low that way and phone stoped turning off by itself!! It could stop while i was washing dishes but it was "fixed" after i used that app, so i dont know. I don't personally think that some app can fix hardware issue but i think it works as some "refresh" or something like that. I don't know really but in my case was money saver what ever that is. Oh and i'm talking about "Extended Apps" app.. :/

My Galaxy Note 3 battery is working as brand new, giving 3 to 4 days without charging and it was 1 to 2 days before the app. I don't think that is placebo effect and I have absolutely no idea what the app does, and too bad the dev doesn't have a website, but the app is good. Also using the other app from the same dev, called Advanced Battery Calibrator and letting the phone charge till 100% while off did wonderful things.
I still wonder how it can fix hardware of it simply erase data from the battery increasing risk to catch on fire, but it does work.

If your battery has dead cells im sorry but no app will fix it, unless its magic! It must replace the cells somehow magically! Omg do some basic research these apps are fake garbage! Maybe it can fix my dead s3 battery hahaha NOT!

ofc is not gona revive a battery,but even that it can be made,in some cases,i saw that of ppl proving that live,they took a dead battery and test it to show that it is dead and just used another same model battery that it was working and hold them connected like 5 min toghether,after that it just put the dead battery at charged and what u know?it did revived it,no idea how the battery actually work,but it seems that they can actually get stuck somehow and they can get a "forced" revive,like a CPR for humans,but like i said,not working with all,same as like on humans,not all can be revived with CPR,but i guess that this app has to do something coz like some in here i did used it and ... the magic worked,not on a dead battery,so scheptical as it sounds,on some batteries it works even tho maybe is not something hardware but maybe just something software,why i say that,i had a tablet and a few times when i was restarting the tablet,after a min was turning off coz of battery 0%,and that after i got the recharger plug off,so it was 100% for sure,after a few times restarting the tablet it was showing again 100 % as it should be,so i guess that not even android is always reading the data correctly
Of course is a full fake. Uninstall them, becouse they can do bitcoin mining or whatever gain trough pupup and promotions., as well as getting your data.
1) Ion litium or polymer batteries cannot be repaired.
2) cells are 1 or max 4 not 256 as those apps shows
3) clearing the cache brings different fault cells
4) reinastalling shows other broken cells
5) strangely the application after "repair" stays open in background. So at least the word "repair" is a joke fooling people.
6) dynamic ram and ddr are always powered and refresh cycles are required in all the address space generally, so saying that freeing ram allow more battery duration is a fake.
7) whatever the app does to have battery least more is just sw and tricky. I would not rely on that and remove the app.

Hello, there's a way to calibrate your battery without root.
to calibrate your battery, i found by my self a way to(when i did it, the battery time left was increased):
1)charge your phone to 100% battery.
2)turn on- wifi, auto rotation, bluetooth...(everything that is consuming battery not including apps)
3)leave your phone with screen off.
4)discharge much as you can.
5)when you finished, charge your phone and don't use the phone.
optional:
if you want a proof that this is worked- open settings and see how much time left for your battery(you will see that it had been increased).
FYI I just finished testing Battery Life Repair 2018 by running it on a new Android tablet with a huge 8000+mAh battery. It reported about 14 weak or bad cells out of a total of 120 cells. When told to fix those cells, it requests you to download another of their apps to help support them. Just say YES, then kick back out without downloading and the fix finishes. I had hardware "USB Safety Tester" connected during this test (it displays various info including the charging voltage and amperage). With about 12% of the cells reported bad, after the fix the Tester recorded zero increase in Volts or Amps. So it maintained a steady watt draw from the charger even after 14 more cells were now drawing watts to charge. Next I cleared storage on the app, ran it again, and got 12 different cells reported to have problems. Fixed those cells, and again, no change in charge draw.
I also found it strange that it would use WIFI and Cell Data and run in the background. Why?
The Battery Life Repair app reports that my Galaxy S5 also has 120 cells in its battery. Seeing as almost 99% of phones and tables have a SINGLE cell in their battery (one or two phones have 2 cells), the display of a 120 cell grid seems rather fishy. Having a 120 cell battery requires cell balancing hardware and software that that would add to the cost of the phone, plus make the battery physically larger. My electric bike has about 80-90 cells in it and it weighs about 15lbs and is 30,000 mAh and 47 volts. Hard to do in one or two cells. That is a good example of why a multi cell (3.6 v each?) battery is needed. But not a cell phone or tablet.
I know my test is not the most scientific, but at least I did check for a change in wattage draw before and after fixing cells, and not just ecstatically claim my battery has improved.
So I call Battery Repair Life 2018 to be a steaming pile of BS that is probably robbing you of your contacts and other personal information while running in the background sucking up your data plan. But, hey, that's just me.

My friend has an S3, and we are baffled to the problem.
Basically the phone has 3-4 hrs battery life from a full charge. We tried a hard reset, new battery, app killers, disabling apps, virus scans, adware scans, etc. No avail. It just eats battery on or off.
The phone does run very hot, just sitting there the temperature is up around 50°c. The SD card also won't register.
Has the handset developed a fault?

use better battery stat monitor wake lock and disable service that wake your phone
Yes stock Rom. Phone hasn't been molested.
As said even at rest, just sitting, the bottom of the phone is hot.

I think that normal battery stat if you always connect 3g internet. Try to use 2g when screen off using tasker profile, monitor wake lock then disable it, disable location service and enable power saving mode. It should reduce power consumption.

Well I had an S3 before I got a Note 3. I've set his phone up exactly as I have both of these set up. I could go a day or 2 on the S3 without needing a charge, if I wasn't using it.
Even on the note, I'm always in a 4G signal, and always have apps running in the background, and diddle on my phone for a fair bit during the day.... I still easily have over 50% battery come home time.
His S3, even left with data network deactivated, and not using the phone at all, will be flat within 6hrs.
Time for a new battery , if thats won't help . paint it blue and throw it to deep waters . Good Luck .

Not sure if it is that,but with stock ROMs I feel kind of a battery drain,while with aosp it's amazing. Google services updated right when I went back to stock,though. So,not sure.
Use trickster mod to force the phone to go in a deep sleep and handle the wake locks
Check this..
1. Use LTE Only When Needed
Never use LTE if you're not using it at all and select 3G instead. 4G/LTE features high-speed mobile data connection but eats a lot on the battery more than you think than 3G.
2. Selective Features
Features are amazing and may actually help you every day but not all of them are good for the battery. Keep those features you use at all times and turn off others which are not needed on every day activities.
3. Wireless Connectivity
Aside from mobile data, watch out for other wireless radios such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC which consumes power and you must turn them off whenever not in use.
4. Preferred Internet Connection
Whenever there is an available and decent Internet connection via Wi-Fi, use it instead of mobile data to preserve power on your phone.
5. Display Screen
Around 50 per cent of power consumption is allocated on the screen which means you need to manually set the brightness level comfortable to you, minimise screen timeout and use static yet dark wallpapers to save energy on the display.
6. Location Services
GPS can kill your battery life and set only certain apps allowed to use location services - those which requires it.
7. Apps and Widgets
Widgets are good display designs on the home screen but only a few helps your battery. Remove widgets you're not using anymore and uninstall the app altogether. In addition, be careful with certain apps which are poorly written that may eat away battery faster or damage system files on the worst part.
8. Don't Forget This!
Samsung installed a non-removable Power Saver on your Galaxy S3 and you should use it as much as needed. Whenever you are not using any Internet connection or high tasking services, activate the Power Saver from the notifications shade to manage battery life better.
9. Colour Profile
Galaxy S3 features screen mode and you should use customise the profile to help save power consumption on the Super AMOLED display screen.
10. Refresh Regularly
It is recommended to restart your phone once a day to refresh the entire system after an entire day of full work just like a computer. It will also help the memory to perform better after a reboot.
11. Factory Reset
In worst case scenario of apps damaging the system, you'll need to reset the smartphone. It will restore the default apps and remove all other culprits which may have caused the battery last shorter and poor performance on the phone.
12. Drain the Battery
Certain times require battery drain similar with laptops and notebooks to enabling healthy charging cycle. Usually, battery draining a device once a month then getting a full charge for about four hours keep cycles healthy than those units without recharging cycle.
13. Avoid High Temperature
Avoid leaving the phone inside your car or putting it on a surface with direct sunlight to prevent damaging its battery. High temperature will damage the battery pack leading to poor performance. However, extreme cold can also affect the device leading to moisture damage.
14. Root Access
Rooting will void the warranty but if it's already gone, why not do it anyway. Root access will enable you to control various aspect on the battery and processor to improve power management.
15. Custom ROMs
Samsung Galaxy S apps and TouchWiz UI consume high amount of battery which makes other Galaxy S3 users to resort on custom ROMs. Custom ROMs always feature better power management, CPU tweaking and larger memory compared to stock ROM and if you want longer battery life, get a custom ROM.
