Hi, I recently bought a Galaxy S2 from AT&T and I wanted to know the answer of this stupid question.
I think in recovery is [Vol. Up, Vol. Down, Power]
Then what combination is for download mode?
Thanks in advance.

Searching I found a thread saying the combination is [Vol. Down, Power]
I don't have the phone here so I'll test it later.

With the phone off:
Recovery: USB cable unplugged, power + volume up +volume down.
Download: USB cable plugged in, power + volume up +volume down.

The key sequence given above for recovery mode is correct.
However, the key sequence for download mode is, I think, the one that works on the international version of the S2, the GT-I9100. On the AT&T version, the SGH-I777, download mode is as follows:
If you intend to flash firmware, you should have Oden open on the desktop before initiating download mode. Your USB cable should be plugged in to the computer, but not the phone. With the phone turned off, hold down both volume buttons, but not the power button, while plugging the USB cable into the phone. When the first screen appears, release the vol buttons and then use the vol + button to move to the download screen.

Interesting.
The SGH-I777 I have was purchased in early October, 2011. I just tested the vol down plus power button combination and it just boots the phone normally as if just long pressing on the power button. This behavior is governed by the secondary bootloader, so it is safe to assume that some later version of the firmware has changed the bootloader, possibly the 4.1.2 stock UCMD8.
I would guess that the majority of phones out there contain the original secondary bootloader though.

My original post states to press vol up AND vol down AND power while the USB cable is already plugged in for download mode.
the only difference between getting into recovery and dfownload for the phone is whether the usb cable is plugged in or not.

both my phone and my wife's sgh-i777 were never officially updated past ICS, although the ucmd8 modem has been flashed to each. Both phones boot to download mode using the button combination specified.
our phones were purchased second-hand, so I cannot verify the state or quality of the bootloaders beyond "functional"

@cyril279,
I just verified that your combination for download mode works on my phone. I've been reading this forum continuously for almost two years, and I can't recall ever seeing anyone post that specific method for entering download mode. Strange. But good to know.

I can't say that i learned that method by any intentional means. I'm pretty sure that I was trying to enter recovery mode while the phone was charging (via the computer). In the end, it's an easier approach for me than plugging in while voluming, but to each his own.
I'm glad to be able to bring something new to the table (however small), I sincerely appreciate your support, your signature has saved me countless times.

I know many different threads are already available on this topic, but I think mine is severe. Obviously my Vibrant is bricked, and yes, I have done many different things to attempt to fix it.
If I am missing anything, please let me know.
=====================================================
-The phone is not recognized whatsoever by USB on an apple computer or any variety of windows computers, rendering any advice using Odin and ADB useless.
-The phone will not go past the vibrant screen, but makes the sound like it is attempting to the Galaxy S animation. However, it never displays this animation.
-The phone can enter recovery mode, but not download mode.
-I have tried clearing all data and I have also tried "Reinstalling packages", but it does not do anything.
-The phone will not go into download mode by connecting it to the PC (XP 32 bit) while holding vol. up and down at the same time.
-When the phone is plugged into the wall, the battery charge image displays on the screen, but any combination of buttons do not work.
-I have all current Samsung drivers, as well as the Kies software on my computer.
=====================================================
I think I should make or purchase the "USB Dongle" which allows the phone to go into download mode via Hardware.
Is there anything else I can do?
Thank you for any and all help.
You are still ok
1) power phone down
2) pull battery out
3) hold volume up + down
4) while holding Volume up + down , put battery back in
5) still holding volume up + down plug usb cable into the phone
Option2:
Power off, hold vol+ and vol-, plug in USB.
Is it rooted?

I hosed mine last week where I couldn't even see the vibrant screen or charge indicator and that fixed mine.

Yes, and unfortunately no method of button pressing will aloow me to enter "Download" mode. However, I can enter recovery mode easily. It is confusing because all questions I see on the forum about bricking issues say they can't enter Download or Recovery.

Hi all, new member as i just got a samsung galaxy S2!
Ok, so i have bought a sgs2 of a friend at work. He was messing with it(trying to root it, he thinks) and did something wrong and messed it up, so i bought it of him for very cheap to have a go at fixing it. Things that are wrong with it - when you turn the phone on it just comes up with samsung Galaxy S2 gt-19100 with a yellow triangle under it, it wont go any further. I can get into the download menu, but i cant get into the menu to do a factory reset. Another thing is it will not charge, when i plug it in to the mains or a pc it just comes up with a battery and a little circle inside it, but dosnt move and dosnt charge! O and yet another thing i dont now what firmware was on it before, but i no it was O2 if thats any help. If i have left anything out that you need to no, ill be hear all night trying to get this thing going! Is it even possible for this to be fixed as i had a good look threw this website and the internet and cant find anything about this.
Thanks
1). Check under battery for exact model number
2). Download a stock ROM for the model you find
3). [optional but recommended] check the battery level and if necessary charge in another phone to make sure it's not going to die while doing the next step
4). Flash a stock ROM via Odin
5). If it doesn't boot, go to recovery and factory reset

Also at the min i cant get into recovery to do a factory reset? Again sorry for my ignorance and thanks for the reply
You can find stock ROMs http://www.samfirmware.com/ or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278, the latter having a tutorial too.
Are you sure you can't get into recovery? Your first post made me think you were getting into download mode and thinking that was recovery. Vol Up + Home + Power (from off)

Hi, sorry for confusing, when i hold vol up home and power it dosnt do anything, just turns the phone on, well to the screen it wont go past! Also how do i no which stock rom to choose? what letters should i be looking for?
I think you're still doing it wrong then, as I don't think there even exists a kernel for this phone which doesn't have recovery. Hold volume up and home, then also hold power for about five seconds.
Regarding stock ROM, just pick the latest for your region (presumably XEU if by o2 you mean UK o2).

Flashing literally any I9100 kernel, be that stock or custom would still have recovery. I suspect the device is much worse off than first realised.
Once you flash the stock firmware the phone will boot up normally again.
Any firmware will work.

Follow the Odin method and you will be fine. As long as you have Kies closed (This includes the 3 kies apps that run in task manager!) there will be no problems.
Hopefully you will get a bargin on a new smartphone.

I charged my phone all night last night.
I woke up, phone was fine. Set it down on the couch, came back to it noticing beeping every 5 seconds or so, as if it was being plugged in and then unplugged repeadidly.
I also noticed that my phone though it was charging, even though there wasn't anything charging it.
Wiped Battery Stats - Still Funky
Cleaned usb port/ battery with nail polish remover - Still Funky
Updated ROM (newest ShoStock)
Phone would not get past the 'GALAXY s2' Black Screen.
No big deal right?
But now I can't load CWM from the internal memory AND I can't boot it from an SD card. It won't do anything besides give the black Samsung 'GALAXY s2" screen!!!!
When it is plugged in it won't even give me the Samsung screen, it just has a frozen charging screen on it.

Yes I am having the same issue, a friend of mine bought it online from a website for $ 180.00 and I rooted 3 tmo ones and they were very simple and easy.
The problem with this one is that the phone never get's to download mode not even with the jig.
When you hold Volume Down + Home + Power, it takes you to a different screen, I will try to upload a picture soon so that you guys can see what's going on.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Here is more information on the device.
Model number: GT-i9300
Android version: 4.0.4
Baseband version: I9300XXLE8

Seems like some custom software has been installed on the fone that has overwritten what is supposed to be there. Someone more knowledgeable than me would have to tell you how to get
rid of it. It would help to know where the fone is from.
First question has to be is this the International I9300 phone or some other model .

Hi guys
I'm facing a problem i'm not very comfortable with...
Just bought for my wife a Galaxy S2 running Gingerbread 2.3.5.
I planned to root it and migrate him later on to latest Sammy on JB...
As per many tutos, to root the tel, you inject ( using Odin) the right CF_root from chainfire once the telephone is in the so called download mode
and here comes the problem...Vol- & Home & Pwr do nothing...It just boots the tel...No DL mode at all !!!
Are there GS2 around with no DL mode ? or is there a way to force this DL mode ?
( I've tried a suggestion which did not work..i.e remove batt , wait 30s, press vol-,pwr, home and reiensert batt without releasing the keys)
Any suggestion more than welcome

Tried a USB jig? They are intended to force DL mode. Never used one myself though. What you've already done would have been my first port of call. Also, have you tried recovery mode? (Vol up, Home, power). That way you can tell if its the vol. down button thats not recognising the keypress. On my tablet, that's the case, it takes a bit of poking/fiddling to get into recovery mode as my vol up button is sketchy.

You can try something.....turn off phone, and pull out-reinstert battery.Don't turn on yet!Now start pressing and holding the VOL DOWN button only. With phone turned off,and pressing the VOL DOWN key,put in charger.Keep holding the button, until you see Download mode.If that doesn't work, maybe VOL button is faulty. Also, try a Jig.It has to work
Yeah...the USB Jig was THE solution...and without yr suggestion I would'nt have had the idea to use it..and this for a good reason...My own GS2 does not react to USB jig ( the only solution to enter DL mode is the key combination) where my wife's GS2 enters DL mode ONLY with this Jig...

Simply because I have discoverd that this new GS2 has probably an H/W problem i.e The Vol Down key seems to be dead and that leads to another question Are the Vol keys simple H/W stuff, establishing contact or not or is it under software control ?
Browsing PhilZ recovery, I've seen a brief on screen message "Vol Down enabled"followed immediately by "Vol Down disabled" which I've not been able to reproduce..
So i'm in the blue....H/W or S/W problem
BTW, there may be a solution I had not thought to...
the power button , when hit, takes me to a 4 way reboot in which there is among the options, reboot in download
this may be the solution i'm after...and which I'll test as soon as my wife lets me approach her phone...lol
thks fr yr concern
I would be very careful when mucking around without the proper hardware functions. I would advise getting it fixed before continuing. If something goes wrong and you need to use the hardware combo to get into download mode to flash stock, you're stuffed. End of story. Messing with phones with no escape plan is a bad idea.

Mobile Odin will get you outta that button mess. You can always flash philz or siyah v6 with it.
You should get them fixed.
