Pretty weird...No download mode - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
I'm facing a problem i'm not very comfortable with...
Just bought for my wife a Galaxy S2 running Gingerbread 2.3.5.
I planned to root it and migrate him later on to latest Sammy on JB...
As per many tutos, to root the tel, you inject ( using Odin) the right CF_root from chainfire once the telephone is in the so called download mode
and here comes the problem...Vol- & Home & Pwr do nothing...It just boots the tel...No DL mode at all !!!
Are there GS2 around with no DL mode ? or is there a way to force this DL mode ?
( I've tried a suggestion which did not work..i.e remove batt , wait 30s, press vol-,pwr, home and reiensert batt without releasing the keys)
Any suggestion more than welcome

Tried a USB jig? They are intended to force DL mode. Never used one myself though. What you've already done would have been my first port of call. Also, have you tried recovery mode? (Vol up, Home, power). That way you can tell if its the vol. down button thats not recognising the keypress. On my tablet, that's the case, it takes a bit of poking/fiddling to get into recovery mode as my vol up button is sketchy.

You can try something.....turn off phone, and pull out-reinstert battery.Don't turn on yet!Now start pressing and holding the VOL DOWN button only. With phone turned off,and pressing the VOL DOWN key,put in charger.Keep holding the button, until you see Download mode.If that doesn't work, maybe VOL button is faulty. Also, try a Jig.It has to work

Yeah...the USB Jig was THE solution...and without yr suggestion I would'nt have had the idea to use it..and this for a good reason...My own GS2 does not react to USB jig ( the only solution to enter DL mode is the key combination) where my wife's GS2 enters DL mode ONLY with this Jig...
So one more time, thks to you all...

Ah this is ennoying...because it means that, now i'm on JB 4.1.2 this jig may not work properly...
Why do I bother ?
Simply because I have discoverd that this new GS2 has probably an H/W problem i.e The Vol Down key seems to be dead and that leads to another question Are the Vol keys simple H/W stuff, establishing contact or not or is it under software control ?
Browsing PhilZ recovery, I've seen a brief on screen message "Vol Down enabled"followed immediately by "Vol Down disabled" which I've not been able to reproduce..
So i'm in the blue....H/W or S/W problem

BTW, there may be a solution I had not thought to...
the power button , when hit, takes me to a 4 way reboot in which there is among the options, reboot in download
this may be the solution i'm after...and which I'll test as soon as my wife lets me approach her phone...lol
thks fr yr concern

I would be very careful when mucking around without the proper hardware functions. I would advise getting it fixed before continuing. If something goes wrong and you need to use the hardware combo to get into download mode to flash stock, you're stuffed. End of story. Messing with phones with no escape plan is a bad idea.

Mobile Odin will get you outta that button mess. You can always flash philz or siyah v6 with it.
You should get them fixed.

[Q] SGS2 Cannot get past Kernel Panic Upload Mode... bricked?

Hi all,
I just tried flashing Resurrection ROM 1.9 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854).
After using CWM to flash (using the Extended steps as listed at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26222702&postcount=32381) my phone doesn't even show a boot animation, it just goes straight to Kernel Panic Upload Mode.
I have downloaded a stock rom with the intention of simply flashing to stock and rerooting/reflashing another rom but ODIN cant even see my phone. I cant boot to recovery and I cant boot into download mode because Kernel Panic Upload Mode seems to be happening first.
Does anyone have any idea how to make this phone usable again?
No recovery no download mode .
Possible if old bootloaders in the rom that a USB recovery Jig will access download mode .
Otherwise its a JTAG repair that will be cheaper than a service centre repair .
jje
remove cable / charger
remove battery
reinsert battery
press home + vol down + power all at once.
kernel panic should come after this, unless you cant access download mode, in which you will see the samsung i9100 logo first and than the kernel panic
holding home + vol down + power while booting results in the exact same screen - i just can't access download mode :/
its odd that the screen says 'kernel panic UPLOAD mode' ... is there anything that can be done with any tool for upload mode?

(I remember someone has reported) keep your battery out atleast for 2-3 hours,
and try the Vol-Down+Home+Power - pressing sequence should be same..I think accidently you are pressing power button first....
if no hope order a Jig and try...

Need HELP! phone wont turn on

Hello, so i have a international S3 and have flashed ROMS since I got it. I am running Omega JB V28 with Syiah Kernel 1.7rc. All is fine for over a week. Just right now my phone froze and did not want to wake up, So I held down volume up, menu button, and power button to restart my phone. I accidentally let go too early before I saw the Galaxy s3 logo and now, I cannot start my phone??? I cant even go into recovery mode.... Any suggestions on how to get this to work??? thanks!
Try this:
Take battery out for 5 minutes and place it back in. Then do the required combination to get into recovery. If not try download mode...
If that fails... put the phone on charge and hopefully the battery will show up showing its charging. If not I can give no more advice.
Hope this helped.

Tried all of the above, took battery out, recovery didnt work. Battery out agin and download mode didnt work. Pluged phone in charge and not battery images. Tried recovery and download mode while phone plugged in charger and still nothing happens. It is weird cus I didnt prick my phone or anything, it was fine for a week. Just tried to restart it and let go to early and no this happens :/
As warranty is void you are best to source a USB recovery jig to access download mode before anything else .

You certainly pricked your S3 by at most flashing a non compatible rom for ur S3 (international) or u just messed up with something during installation, head to samsung customer care.

my phone has been rooted and flashed Omega ROM since may. The phone was working fine for 2 weeks after flashing the new Omega JB Rom v28 and it just shuts off and not power up now. I heard of people installing wrong ROMS or wrong versions of it then bricking their phons, but my phone was flashed the correct ROMS and was in a working state for 2 weeks since my last flashed ROM, never heard of a phone bricking out of now where after u've just used it... I am stopped and dont know how it happened :/ i ordered a jig and thought that might be my only way out. Anyone know if you can restart ur phone from download mode?

I may be ,isunderstanding what you are asking here but are you asking how to get your device in to download mode by using a button combo like getting in to recovery mode if so:
ODIN/Download Mode
Make sure your device is completely off
Key Combos: Volume Down + Home
While holding both of them simultaneously press the Power button until the green robot is visible on the screen indicating that handset is in Download mode.
Then press Volume Up to accept the disclaimer
Recovery Mode
Make sure your device is completely off
Key Combos: Volume Up+ Home
While holding both of them simultaneously press the Power button

I actually am familiar on how to go to download moe and recovery mode. The weird thing is that my phone is unresponsive. It doesnt go to download mode or recovery mode at all. With no signs of life. And this happened yesterday morning after i used my phone for like 5 minutes when it was fine. I didnt brick my phone cus I wasnt flashing anything when this happened I just tried to reboot my phone and once the screen turned off it never came back one... kinda wierd and un heard of. But I did order a jig so hopefully it can be forced into download mode and take it from there....

Only thing I can think of is a crap battery that needs replacing.. You could also go to a metro store and ask em to restore it to stock. Almost all of em have the Samsung factory device. If u can get it into download mode I have a thread where I put instructions on how to recover from brick. (After 6 days of trial and error).

The jig or the Samsung device?
I havnt used the jig but tons of people have with success. You can make one or buy one off eBay for like $10.
The device I have used before on someone else's phone, AND you can use it to unlock your phone.

If you look at the top of the general section there is a Question thread, more people monitor that thread than the main section. Posting there in future is best practice.
If your stuck at boot I would suggest removing the battery. Hold the volume+ volume- and the power button while reinserting the battery (this can be done with the help of a friend if needed)
The phone should go into download mode press vol- to confirm you want to risk your device by using odin. Doing the same but holding the vol+, home and power button then inserting the battery will take you to recovery.
One thing worth noting is having the usb lead connected at the time of pressing the buttons can (sometimes) stop it working properly as the device goes to charge as a priority. Also did you remember to wipe the Dalvik cache as a hung boot screen could be the device memmory is too full and it did not finish the install due to this.
If no luck using this method then you can look up usb jig (I have never had to go this far)

[Q] Download Mode not working

Hello experts,
I am not able to get into Download Mode with my Mega 6.3 running stock Android 4.2.2!
What I've triedwith phone powered down)
* Vol down + Home + Power ---> phone vibrates, display comes alive from black to grey and gets black again and shuts down (buttons still pressed; if I release any one button, normal booting is the result)
* Vol down + Power ---> same as above
* battery out, Vol up + Vol down, connect with USB-cable to PC (with Odin running and tar-file inserted) ---> same as above but battery charging symbol appears
Any suggestions are very well appreciated!!!

Will your mega actually boot and run? If so I'd suggest, of your rooted downloading something like quick boot or another menu boot app that will automatically be reboot you into download mode. Also make sure when you hold the buttons that you hold volume down and home then press and hold power. Sometimes phones can be a bit wonky with button commands

You've gotta hold home and volume down,...then press and hold power usually hold all 3 for like 10 or so seconds until it reboots, keep holding and bam.
Again no succsess! If I hold Vol down + Home and then press Power (from Homescreen) the phone shuts down and stays that way no matter how long I press/hold the buttons... The moment I release the buttons the phone boots normal!
I tried other buttons:
Vol down & up ---> phone starts in "Secure Mode"
Vol up ---> phone starts in "Recovery Mode" (can I use this mode for rooting?)
I am absolutely frustrated... but thanks for your help!!!
It all sounds quite a lot like a problem that I have. My screen broke and when the phone came back from service, my download mode was gone. It turned out that it was just blank graphically. One problem is that that when you enter download mode normally, you let go of the buttons when you see the graphics. If you keep pressing the buttons, then the device restarts after a while. I wonder if you can time it so that you enter download mode ( if your problem is the same as mine) and then press power and then volume up (the normal way to set download mode to receive flash) and then see if Odin recognizes the phone? I ordered a JIG to see if that would give me graphics in download mode, but it didn't. It worked the same way as the "blind key combo" so I tried flashing despite no graphics and it worked as it should. It felt a bit scary flashing through a broken download mode but I did it... That's my story
You can use Wanam Xposed (you have to be rooted and have installed Xposed Framework). In Wanam -> System you will find future 'Enable 4 way reboot menu'. Tick it and in 'Power switch menu' under 'Restart' you will find 4 Reboot options:
- Reboot
- Recovery
- Hotbot
- Download
It could resolve your problem, at least temporarely.
Of course there will be not 'download mode graphic' either but you can be sure so you are REALLY in download mode
Ullebear stated that his/her phone is not routed, so maybe Kingo root would be a good idea. I haven't tried it but I'm fairly certain it does not require you to be in download mode for the rooting process. Xposed and Wanam-stuff can be applied after that in order to more easily reach download mode without having to time the button pressing combo.
Please ullebear, let us know how it goes. I'm really curious about whether your problem is of the same nature as mine.
Kingo Root is working flawlessly on Mega GT-I9205, I have checked it myself.

Normaly you have to push volume up to continue but not with the jig you go straight into download mode.
Hello everybody...
In fact my phone wasn't able to go into "Download Mode" after getting it back from a repair of my display! I guess the authorized Samsung repair changed something in the firmware which always gave me a blank screen after pressing the correct button combination...
As suggested, I tried to go blindly into "Download Mode" by pressing Vol Up at the blank screen, but it didn't work
So here finally my solution (Kingo Root was too "suspicious" for me):
I ordered a USB Jig via Ebay compatible with Samsung Galaxy S2, S3 and Note (Mega was not listed as a supported type) for 2 bucks.
I powered down the handy and inserted the Jig ---> blank screen (but I hoped it would be the "blanked" warning screen before "Download Mode").
I pressed Vol Up, opened Odin, disconnected the Jig and connected the Mega via USB with the PC.
From there everything went smoothly Phone was recognized and I was able to root with installation of SuperSU!
Thanks for all you help - you are a great forum with very helpful members!!!
By the way: I am from Germany and my phone came preinstalled with French firmware!

HELP! Deleted OS by accident and cant access Recovery Mode TWRP and now bootloop

Hello there, I own a galaxy s3 for quite a while and I remember I rooted the device and flashed the Revolutionary S5 ROM via odin long time ago (I did all this with the help of several youtube videos because I am an ignorant in this matter).
But well the problem started when I was going to make a factory reset to the phone because I lent it to a friend and when I got it back I just wanted to clean it and wipe all the info. I entered to recovery mode (twrp) and by accident I wiped all the phone had including te OS. I noticed it because when I was going to power off the phone in recovery mode it told me that there was no OS.
So now the phone is in a bootloop, because when I try to turn it on I only see the samsung galaxy logo and thats it, the same when I plug the phone to the power it only shows the battery screen.
I also have the problem with the volume up key that doesnt work so I cant access the recovery mode. Only the download mode using the volume down+home+lock button combination but still i cant do anything because of the volume up buttom that doesnt work.
If someone can help me with this problem I would really appreciatte it. Explaining me like a 5 yo.
Do you have access to a USB jig that will force the phone into download mode?

No I dont, I can enter download mode by pressing the volume down + home+ lock button. But after that I cant do anything else because in download mode it tells me to press volume up to continue and volumen down to cancel. And unfortunately my volume up button doesnt work.
Any ideas?
The jig will put the phone into download mode, no buttons required.
To use the jig, remove battery, insert jig, insert battery.

Thanks, I will try to find a usb jig and do that.
Any other way I can get into download mode without the jig?
I don't know of any other way to get into download mode.
The jig works with many models of Samsung phones.
Op states he can access download mode but not recovery. Flash the latest stock firmware twice via odin and factory reset in between flashes. Make sure the firmware matches your phone region etc and must android 4.3.

Sorry to bother you but can you tell in depth how to do that without using the volume up key, because I cant fully access the download mode. I just get stuck in the screen that says press volume up to continue or volume down to cancel.
Solved.
Maybe its not the best way to fix it but I inserted a little blade into the volume buttons and took the button out, I clean it a little bit and inserted it so that the volume up key could function (not fully). So that way I accessed recovery mode and flashed the rom I had using an extsd card where I previously copied the zip of the rom. Now I will flash the stock rom twice and who know from there.
Thanks all for your answers

Ah, ok then that isn't download mode at all.
Looks like you'd be best sending it to a repair shop because at this point you need the buttons working. You could dismantle the phone and short the button pad with a small metallic object but if your skills don't range to that i would advise against it as it is very easy to damage the component when shorting it out manually.
