[Q] Carrier Unlock GT-i9300 Android 4.1.2 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Fellas,
I've searched the forum but, nothing was helpful to me so, i think it's time for me to ask you questions :cyclops: .
A friend of mine bought a Samsung Galaxy GT-I9300 and, after few days, we figure out it was SIM Locked. Below, i'm gonna post all the informations of this device:
Model: GT-I9300
Android Version: 4.1.2
BaseBand: I300XXEMG4
Kernel: 3.0.31-1314436 [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jul 16 20:28:36 KST 2013
Build: JZO54K.I9300XXEMG4
The carrier on which it is locked is: PosteMobile
The phone is already ROOTed.
Can anyone tell me where should i go and what should i do to unlock this device? How i've already said before, i've searched on the forum but, i've found only 2 methods:
- The one with the code and it won't work since it's a GT-i9300
- TechMayhem: but the last two answers in the thread doesn't encourage me at all. And, if this is not enough, Google says AndroidFirmwares.net it is not a trusted website.
Please, answer asap. Thanks a lot fellas :victory:

Only if you have an EFS backup from Before MG4

Not even if i install a custom ROM or Factory Reset the phone ? I don't have any EFS backup.

No. You need EFS v1./ With MG4 ROM you get EFS v2. There is no way to go back to EFS v1 without an EFS backup from YOUR phone when it was EFS v1. Custom ROMS and Stock ROMs cannot help you. There is nothing you can do. At all... Nothing.

There is a guy ( 1500km away from where i live ) that says he can do it but i should ship the phone to him. Is there any chance or it's just a scam?

He may have hardware that can do it, sure. Like I said before, there are no FREE options.

Why do people think you can't unlock this model using an unlock code? Of course you can. You'd need to reinstall the stock firmware but the code method will work.

No one said you can't unlock it with an unlock code. We have only discussed the use of free methods not working, which is down to the new format of the EFS partition. This has all been stated in this thread.
fact is most unlock codes have to be purchased from some company who will send it in 24 hours+ and will charge for it. When there are free methods about, most people will not buy a code. I bet 80% of people here will wait for a free tool to work again instead of buying a code.

I'd imagine the percentage is higher than that!
I don't get the hostility but the OP said "The one with the code and it won't work since it's a GT-i9300" - maybe they meant something else, but I saw that as they were referring to an unlock code not working in the GT-i9300.
You also said "Not sure about purchasing unlock codes" which is a bit ambiguous. Are you referring to the effectiveness of them or a different aspect? In context however, it appeared to be their effectiveness.

Sorry if you think I am being hostile. That is not my intention.
"Not sure about purchasing unlock codes"
Here is what I know.
We have free tools available that can alter the SIM lock of the S3, but with OS builds from 1st of July, the format of the EFS partition has changed and these free tools are no longer effective. I am not sure about purchased unlock codes. I have not used one so I cannot vouch for whether it works or not. I did not want to convey that there was categorically no way to unlock the phone because, as stated - I am not certain that is the case. I only wanted to convey that these free tools will no longer work.
In regard to a higher percentage buying unlock codes, nah. On any other android HELP forum - sure, maybe but on this DEVELOPERS forum (here) - Highly unlikely.

It's no problem - I must have taken it the wrong way.
What you're talking about there does ring a bell for me. I believe I was seeing a bunch of results in Google earlier in the year for relating S3 unlocking search terms and a free method being mentioned. It must have been the method you have mentioned there.
In regards to the percentage, I meant higher than 80% - meaning, I think more than 80% of people would opt for a free tool.

Ah gotcha.
Yeah there are a few tools that could unlock the S3 until July. The main one was GalaxSim unlock, but actually - he did add a payment method to it in the end. The beta app was free though.

Relevant to the cost of the phone paid for unlock is peanuts .

Hey guys,
Any news regarding this subject?
Today I went to my operator and they still want to charge me 150€ for unlocking my SGS3 with more than 2 years old...
Going back to an older ROM does not work, right?
Cheers!

Hundreds of identical posts, you can't downgrade unless you have an efs v1 backup. Go to an online unlock code provider, it will work the same as your operator code.

And for some reason you think that makes a difference?
Its still common sense no matter how many times you have been on a forum or whatever the forum type that if you have a problem or need some info its more then likely your not the only person to ever need this info so you would first do a search.
99% of anything you will ever ask here has already been asked a million times over and it would be quicker and cause less clutter if you would do a simple search first :good:

Need help finding insecure kernel please

Hi, My names Drew, and I just recently joined xda to tinker around with my phone and explore the possibilities that the manufacturers apparently didn't want us to have. I have had my phone for quite a while and I felt it was time to play with it some more. I am have the Samsung Galaxy S2, it is StraightTalks version of it, here are the details on it found through the about-phone.
Firmware: 2.3.6
BasebandVersion: S720C.01 VLI02
Kernel Version: [email protected] -55 #2 PREEMPT Wed Sep 12 10:20:26 KST 2012
I was not sure of which information was needed to get a insecure kernel version, as I could not find anything specifically geared to my phone on these forums. I was unable to directly post on the developers thread due to my low post count (which I would hope should soon get higher as time moves on). So basically, to the point, what insecure kernel should I use since I am a first time rooter? I understand everything here in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414 except for step two when it's talking about kernal versions.
I moved your question to a new thread in the proper forum where someone can help you out.

I am not sure(gb is old school) but your kernel version isn't exactly shown, and your current kernel already kinda looks like a insecure kernel, I suggest that you dial *#1234# check the pda info and since the kernel usually matches the firmware(pda) version get one kernel according to that.
Edit: Safer thing to do would be to upgrade to JB and rooting it(which is fairly easier I think).

Ok I dialed *#1234# and I get a verizon operator saying this. "Welcome to Verizon wireless. Your future/feature? update could not be completed. Please try your call again". JB = Jellybean? How do I update my phone to that, I tried to do a system update and it says my phone's already up to date.

Just get a stock jb operating system from sammobile and flash via Odin, there are a lot of threads that cover those matters, read stickied threads, it's a really easy and simple procedure, just be careful not to make mistakes (like suddenly flashing pit files).

I went on sammobile, and looked through their firmware list and mine was not even on there. So that brings me to my next question, since mine is a straight talk phone, and is NOT on the list, is there a possibility that my phone will be bricked flashing a stocked jb operating system to it?

What do you mean by "straight talk" is it some kind of network operator, and are you using some kind of network unlocked device (I am asking because you mentioned Verizon), I will tell you one simple thing though if your device model( as given in the about phone - >model number) is GT-I9100 then it's safe to flash any i9100 JB firmware (especially since you're on GB) if the phone gets sim locked or something you can use the unlock apps available here or in the playstore to unlock it.

When people mention US carriers the first question you ask is:-
'The sticker on the phone chassis, under the battery; what does it say ?'

It was actually SCH-S720C, sorry I was being a busybody on android area51, I managed to solve my own issue and root my phone. With all the trouble of trying to figure out which insecure kernel I needed to flash, I found out that my phone is actually the Samsung Proclaim, even though I have never heard my phone be called that before. And yes it was Straighttalk, its like Net10. Sorry to leave everyone who replied since my last reply hanging, I have been very busy lately. Thanks for replying on my thread to help me out.

[Q] bootloader locked or not?

my question is simple how to know if my bootloader is locked or not ? i need it to be unlocked so i can root it using this :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273&highlight=root+samsung+galaxy+s3&page=55
i have another question is cwm recovery working for 4.1.2 jb devices and where to get it? if not what's the alternative?
Stop.
Don't do anything else to your phone before you go and read ALL the stickies in the general forum.
You need to understand the basics and backup your efs folder before you destroy your phone.
Please don't start new threads for questions that have been answered a hundred times before and are all in the faq.

btw I9300 bootloader is not locked but do read the stickies as it is a different device than all american and several other sgs3 variants
okok no need to kill me i learned my lesson READ the stickies before posting stupid question!!
i scoured this place but i cant find a way to know the bootloader status i found out that xoom is locked and some xperia devices and that i can determine the bootloader status by the time it take on the boot screen but this doesnt sound very accurate is there a code to put it in the dial pad ?
Bootloader is irrelevant, it's a separate operating system that plays no part in recovery or rom.

actually the verizon sgs3 does have a locked bootloader. so it is not always the manufacturer that makes the decisions. in the us the carriers have much more input especially in regards to updates. att just recently began updates to 4.12.
have a look at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756338 they are all samsung galaxy s 3 but none are identical . some are exynos , some are snapdragon. ram , video boards, radios all different variants. that is why it is important to know your device
All the US versions are the same hardware... Besides Radio related stuff...

[q] need urgent help

I just got a Galaxy s3 running on 4.1.2 from UK, it's career locked and I can't open it. I don't even have money to buy the unlock codes now.
It's GT i9300 bt I have no idea which career it belongs to, I found some threads about a code which eventually will lead to to turn off "persoAH6OFF" or sth like that but that doesn't work either.
If I flash an international modem, will the sim-lock be gone for good? Or is there any other way. Please help me people
