Hello.
I am attempting to apply an HTC Software Update to my Evo V which is necessary for me because it will fix my radio issues. In order to do this, I have to be completely on stock because I need to have the stock recovery for it to work.
I have already tried to run the RUU, but I cannot because I am on the 2.95.whatever update..
I am Unlocked and S-on.
I attempted to achieve S-off but it wouldn't work, it would just be stuck at the Juopunutbear logo on the screen after the wire trick.
I am on HBoot 1.58.00 and on a rooted stock rom.
Also, I have TWRP Recovery.
Case and point: I am trying to get on a stock kernel, recovery, and ROM in order to apply an update for my phone, and using a RUU doesn't work for some reason. I have also tried to flash the stock recovery but it would just show a red triangle with an exclamation point on it when I try to update.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you
Pretty sure if you are on 1.58, that was implemented in the latest update...so you should have the latest radio

Hello everybody
The new ICS update for the ROGERS EVO 3D just came out yesterday, so I restored my phone to the original firmware (via restoring the backup I did in the recovery) and then proceeded to download the OTA update. After it finished, the phone rebooted into the recovery (i have 4-ext touch recovery) and started installing. After it finished, the phone rebooted and then got stuck on the white HTC screen. I managed to enter the recovery again and restore the original firmware again. What is that I'm doing wrong here? Here is some helpful info:
Rogers EVO 3D, GSM version
Unlocked bootloader (HTCDEV method), S-ON
carrier unlocked
HBOOT 1.49.0008
OS is rooted
I'm in the same boat but I'm not able to do a recovery. I went through the update process and when the phone rebooted it got stuck on the white htc screen. I can get it into the bootloader menu but when i choose recovery it starts but then i get an error with a pic of the device and the red yield sign. If i choose factory reset it just gets stuck at the white htc. I read some other posts and I saw that having an unlocked bootloader may cause issues with updates so that may be your issue as for me, I'm not sure what I can do. I may just need the actual update file to redo the update but I'm not sure where to find it.
Same here, but I don't get half way through the ota update before I see the red triangle and exclamation mark. Phone will boot into stock recovery (which I would assume you need instead of modded recovery) and the update starts, but doesn't complete. I pull the battery and the phone boots up normally. Just can't seem to get through the update. Could be something to do with being s-off I would guess.

Same problem but whit s-off
I have been predicting that this would happen... ICS failures with non-standard HBOOTs. Good luck.
Probably will have to wait for an RUU or custom.
I'd recommend using the GB ruu to get you back to full stock. Always found Rogers ota updates (possibly all carriers?) won't install if you're rooted or using a custom recovery.
I had to install the ruu via renaming the rom.zip to PG86IMG.zip and copying it to the sd card so that the bootloader would auto flash it. Running the ruu exe tossed up all kinds of errors.
It will put everything back to Rogers stock. After that just setup wifi and do the 2 Rogers OTA updates.
Once in ICS, it's easy peasy to get recovery and root back.
Also, for what it's worth, Go Backup is awesome for going rom to rom and not needing a full backup. Use it on rooted rom, then use it to restore after rooting new rom. Will do all your apk's and everything.
1st post here after years of lurking. Yay.

Alright thanks a lot
Just an update on what I did. I was able to reload the stock gb rom for rogers using the exe file, then I went through the 2 updates that came up when checking and ics is now up and running on my phone. However in my attempts of trying to fix the original problem, I managed to re-lock my bootloader before flashing to stock rom and I had s-on the whole time. hope this help.
i switched to stock like.. a week back?
jus got ota on 4th
i WAS rooted and using juopunutbear's hboot *u can jus get the hboot from their website*
so i jus flashed back stock recovery.. and updated.. and success.. lost root though.. and i was back to stock bootloader..
used the PG86IMG with juopunutbear's bootloader and 4ext recovery.. and flashed cwm supersu.. v0.91 i think.. i dunno.. latest one.. and bam.. im on stock.. rooted.. and works perfectly..
Possible sollution
Maybe try flashing one of the customized ROMs that are based on the latest OTA update. I'm sure Anryl's newest rom is blazing-fast and stable. You can find it in the gsm android development forum and flash it via recovery. Make sure you have the latest 4ext recovery installed, though.
where can a i find that stock rogers rom i modified mine and that might be the reason i get a security failure in hboot. s is on. when i run the ruu file in windows to downgrade i get error 155. when i run the the update from about phone. it locks up with blue android guy and yellow exclamation mark. i remove the battery and she boots fine with no changes.
I am trying to do same. Get stuck on HTC screen. I have S-ON. Was on cobra 2.4 prior.
If anyone can give details on how to fix it, it would be great! Please no saying "install exe". I need to know which exe etc.
just wanted to tell everyone that in order for the ota update to work properly, you need to be running stock unrooted firmware with a locked bootloader. Just relock your bootloader, reinstall the stock firmware, upgrade to ics via ota, then re-unlock and re-root.
Hi
I have a HTC EVO 3D from Rogers that was got messed up during changing networks... rooted the phone for no apparent reason... to now get a update for it for ics from the provider and it bricked the phone.
It's stuck at HTC boot screen, can get fastboot USB from bootloader. recovery gets a ! in a triangle and factory reset doesn't work, freezes at splash screen after restarting the phone. Was stupid not making a backup or searching for programs to back it up before I went ahead and clicked update
It has HTC boot-loader 1.49 s-on but is rooted.
I am looking for clear(fix my evo for dummies) step by step instructions with correct installation for my model of phone, HTC EVO 3D Rogers GSM, or anything that could replace the os to get my phone to be useful again I'm currently using my backup phone a HTC G1 HTC ftw
Try kingcobra's rom, ota from rogers will not boot due to the fact that your phone is rooted, kingcobra's rom is based on rogers ota, flash it and leave it.

Go to the gsm development forum and download the RUU for the phone, and restore it to stock unrooted OS. Before you do that though, make sure that your phone's BOOTLOADER IS LOCKED. Look up how to re-lock your bootloader. After you relock your bootloader, you can proceed with restoring the phone.
Soooo.... basically, what I'm getting from this is, if you like having a locked bootloader, CWM and root, don't bother trying to install this OTA update because it's a headache. Agree?
The phone's not mine, it's my wife's, and she doesn't want anything special or like the idea of me messing around in her phone.
I was about to install this late last night, just about to hit that button, then I thought, "what about the bootloader? what about root? what about the fact that it's now unlocked and being used on a carrier other than Rogers?"
I thought I saw this in one of the forums, but now I cant find it (yes, I used the search).
A few weeks ago, I did the firmware update (OTA_JEWEL_CL_ICS_40_S_SPRINT_WWE_2.13.651.1-1.22.651.3_release_277), downloaded, then restarted the phone, but the phone went into the TWRP recovery....nothing happened. So I tried to install through TWRP, but it "FAILS" every time. Can anyone let me know how the heck I can install the firmware update? And if I install the update, will that remove my "unlocking" (<~ word?)? Thanks for the help guys and gals.
A couple of notes:
I am not fully rooted, I just unlocked with HTC - so S-on
Hboot 1.15
Radio - 1.05.11.0606
TWRP-2.2.1
hardware - 0003
software 1.22.651.3.71ORD
android version - 4.0.3
HTC Sense - 4.0

You can't install firmware with that hboot..you either need to relock and use the most recent ruu, or downgrade your hboot to 1.12 and lazy panda for s-off

Thank you for the response. Is the problem the s- on? And if so, can I wait for s-off for hboot 1.5 and then apply the update?
I know this had probably been answered in the past, so I do appreciate taking the time to catch me up.

Just run the 1.22 stock recovery, that will wipe twrp. Your update should go right thru. Yes you would need to HTC unlock again. If you can't find 1.22 stock recovery let me know and I can pm you the PJ75IMG when I get home
That would be great if you could PM me that file. Also, could you let me know again what it would affect. Do I just unlock through HTC to get access to the root drive?
Does it also zap all my programs and settings? And if so, would I than install TWRP and flash my latest backup?
Sorry for all the questions, I have been away from the "scene" for too long.

If you're not in a hurry, you could just reflash a rooted ROM for now and wait for dirty racun to get s-off (no eta atm) and then flash the latest firmware package.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964309
Otherwise you will need to relock, run the RUU, htc dev unlock again, flash TWRP, etc.

Also update your twrp to v2.3.1.0
I updated my htc evo v 4g with the wrong RUU to unroot it. It was the sprint ruu. Then I updated the system and everything up to the march OTA update so now it has 2.95. Then something happened in between there, so now there is no rom installed. it only will show htc logo screen or hboot (1.58). I tried rooting but recovery wont flash correctly. Tried using various ruu files none work either. I really need the 2.95 latest sprint ruu file. Please does anyone have it.

Not sure why you would want a sprint RUU if it is supposed to be a Virgin Mobile phone (Evo V 4g), but two threads I can think of that may help you...
UnknownForce's [TOOL] Ultimate Recovery Tool 3.1 (Unbrick, Downgrade, VM Radio Fix/Reset)
Ramjet73's [Guide] Quick And Dirty Evo 3D/V Root & S-OFF (Sprint and Virgin Mobile Only)
Haven't seen Ramjet73 around lately, but Unknowforce is still patrolling his thread and he is one of the most knowledgeable about the differences between the Virgin Mobile/Sprint partitions and files so that is probably where you want to start. If you can get back to a correct "stock" state, then you will be able to use either thread to get S-Off and continue on for root/recovery/custom roms.
Hope that helps.
HBOOT 2.09
Radio 1.13.11.0030
Unlocked
So heres the deal. My little brother jacked up his EVO 4g LTE while it was apparently doing an OTA update. It got stuck on a bootloop that would not get past the Sprint logo animation.
In trying to fix it I have:
1) Unlocked it
2) Flashed TWRP
3) Tried flashing stock rooted and stock RUU's.
THE PHONE STILL WON"T BOOT PAST THE SPRINT LOGO! I'm going insane and feel super bad for him. Any ideas? I've tried to get the rumrunner and moonshine S-OFFs to work, but they don't like that I'm stuck on bootloaders or recovery.
Any ideas?
Hit the top link in my sig. I think that will answer some of your questions, as you'll need to flash the kernel separately from the ROM while S-on unless the ROM you're flashing includes a S-on kernel installer. As for RUU's, there isn't one for the latest OTA. Also, make sure you're doing a full system wipe in TWRP prior to flashing a ROM.
Also, Rumrunner is the S-off method you'll need to use, not Moonshine.

Hello guys I'm looking to get some help, and a point in the right direction as to what I need to do to flash roms on my Evo 3d. Currently the phone is rooted and is S-off with an unlocked boot loader. The boot loader is version 1.58. The recovery I using is 4EXT. I have tried flashing several roms including Evervole, Pacman, and the newer cm11 port based of ASAP rocky (I'm not sure of the name). Every time I flash the roms through recovery I data wipe and factory reset like you should do. The roms will install, but I can never get them to boot. They will just go to the logo screen and fail to load up. They don't boot loop they just fail to start. I have left them running for more than 10 minutes several times and no luck. What is the issue, and what am I'm doing incorrectly? Thank you for your help!!!
Just for clarification
Rooted
S-off
Unlocked boot loader
4xet recovery
H boot 1.58
Jbear boot loader from using the wire trick.
Evo 3D or V ? Find stock ruu and flash. it fixes boot issues. Also try a stable custom rom

Evo 3d on sprint. I flashed the stock ruu in order to do the s-off wire trick. I have a back up of that in my recovery. I just did that today. If I redo the ruu will I loose the s-off?
The roms you tried to flash need hboot 1.50
1.58 will only work for ICS roms
You do not need to do the ruu again
Sent from my Evo V 4G using XDA Free mobile app
Okay thank you for that. Is there anyway I can downgrade my h boot? I tried using a file that you place on the root of your sd card and boot into the boot loader and it flashes it in order to downgrade the h boot. But the Rom still will not boot.
if you Put different hboot, you may need to reflash rom
Sent from my DOWNGRADED EVO 3D
Okay gotcha. So what is needed in order to run the newer jelly bean, and Kitkat roms?
You need hboot 1.50 or lower
The op will usually say what hboot to run.
After you change hboot
Reboot to recovery
Wipe all partitions except SD card
Reboot recovery
Then wipe again
Now flash new ROM / gapps
Reboot and enjoy
Make sure you move or rename the pg86img.zip when you are done, it will save you a headache later
