[Q] Backup ENTIRE android phone - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a sprint s3 with 16gb internal and 16gb external and I want to completely back up both directly to my computers Hard drive. If I connect it via usb it either takes hours to copy all the folders and when it does work, I wont get everything in the storage. What is a good app to usb connect my phone and backup or copy and entire directory? WiFi is also and option, but not google drive or dropbox.. I have too much data for them anyways. Thanks

[Q] USB Connection

Hi all,
Been searching for a while but i cant seem to find the answer, im trying to make my phone appear on my pc so i can recover some files i accidently deleted, the problem is it will only show up as the storage card, i can get the phones memory to show up but only via active sync, so im just wondering is there a way to make the phones internal memory appear as a removable drive so i can run a recovery program on it?

Not that I know of. Can you not run it via active sync?
or maybe vise versa?
When connecting as a mass storage device, the OS on your desktop/laptop takes control of that "removable disc" (can't access it via the phone). Only sd card - external storage can be available. I presume that the inner storage must be maintained by the phone at all times, when turned on.
You can however make a backup or modify files within the inner storage with a file explorer installed on your device (Resco explorer for example). Just make adjustments, to view hidden and system files.
I wouldn't advise you to delete or modify critical system files tho...

Help me ! I can't copy file from PC to Samsung T959 !

I'm using the Samsung Galaxy S T959 2.1 of TMobile
I have installed on my computer samsung drivers for mobile and Kies.
My computer is using Win 7 32-bit
Everyday, I plug the cable into my PC and choose Mount, after that I copy data from PC to Samsung normally
Today, when the cable attached to the PC, then select Mount, also appears that 2 drives H & I but I can't copy data to SamSung. When I copied, the PC alert :
Copying
Discovering items.....
Time remain : Calculating
Data Transfer : Calculating
How then is run from morning to noon without the copy is complete, although I only have a 1MB image file. Reset your computer and the SS, but still the same error.
So my computer is corrupted or SS that you failed? I try to connect your computer with the N95, the copy machine is normal.
please help me how to I can copy data normally ?
i had a problem copying files to my vibrant, I formated my internal 16gb memory and it fixed the problem.
i think its
settings>sd phone storage>format.
I would uninstall kies. I never use it. After you do that plug in the phone and you should then use the top pull down menu and it will have a connect usb icon and button. hit that it will then say connected and it will open 2 folders F and G or something like that one is the internal sd and the other is the external And do what the posting said format the external sd card if it is new or you have not yet. you can do it on the computer it would be fat-32 ONLY
If you have wifi you can use the app Wifi File Explorer. Costs about $1 for the Pro version. I use it all the time for transferring files. Very easy and works great. You access your phones storage using your PC web browser. No cables, no problems.

Thanks! I just tried that App. It works great. It doesn't seem to see my MicroSD card though, only the internal memory shows up (on my Vibrant).......unless I am missing something.

Shows up on mine. Look for the sd folder. If you see "Up To Parent Directory" at the top of the directory list click on it because you're not at the root directory level. From root you should see sd/.

3- also the music application cant find my mp3 folder with music.
4- when i open gmail at first it says "no data connection", even if i'm connected, and clicking refresh works. (but i have to click everytime!!!,,,,

ps. does exist an application that cancel all unused application files in the sdcard? thanks again.
1 and 3 sound like a bad sd card or card reader in the phone. The rest sound like an OS bug, which a factory reset should hopefully clear up.

What do you mean "cancel?"
thanks for the answer,
i guess is the sd card, il try a factory reset. the new sd card that caused problem is a samsung 16 gb cas 6, i thoght it was good.
i mean wipe the garbage, like all those files left behind from applications uninstalled and no longer used.
thanks again.

Well, normally when you connect the USB cable and choose to connect the USB storage then the SD card becomes unavailable to the phone but the computer can then access it. Both the computer and the phone cannot access the SD card at the same time... I will spare you the technical reasons but you should know that this is normal. After you are done copying files with the computer then you must turn off this USB storage mode so the phone can access the SD card again and then it will see all your music and pictures again (all these are stored on your card by default).
This should all be fixed OK by a reboot of the phone though in any case. Are you sure you rebooted the phone completely? maybe you should try to remove the battery once?
If you've done all that then you can try to repair the SD card by taking it out of the phone and using micro sd to SDHC adapter and inserting it directly into a computer then using windows to run a chkdsk on it.
hi,
i've done all you said properly, you know the problem came out because there was a differente behavior than in the past.
i remove securely the phone from pc and then is not accessible,
i didn't tried to chdsk the sdcard i'll try, but it sounded strange to me because its brand new.
i also tried to contact htc , they said " try to reboot, or try to remove the battery and the sd and start the phone again, the problem wasnt gone.
thanks for the advice.

Well if it's just gotten corrupted then you can just reformat the sd card. You'll want to backup all your data first so if you can't do that from the USB connection to the PC then you'll need to insert it directly into a pc. Once you've formatted it you can put your backed up data back on the card and put it back in the phone and after a while it will find your mp3s again. If it's truly a bad sd card then the reformat won't help.
Do you have another sdcard? The one that came with the phone or any other? Try putting some mp3s and photos on it and then put that in your phone. If your phone recognizes the photos and mp3s then maybe your current sdcard is the problem. And can you tell the the format of your sdcard? Is it NTFS or exFAT or FAT32? If it is UHS-1 card there is a good chance that it is in exFAT. To make it work on Evo 3d, convert it to FAT32 .

[q] MTP DC's

Hi.
I have my Galaxy S3 for some time now, and i want to transfer some music to my phone.
I have an SD Card with 64gb and of course, a computer
now what happens is that i start copying some music to my phone but after a few the phone simply disconnect and connect, which makes the file transfer very hard. (unless i'm gonna move song after song...)
Obviously this is not how the phone should work so this is why i am here.
Try Kies Air or Airdroid which are wireless transfers.

That happened to me too but only one time while transferring 5GB of music from my computer to my SD card so it wasn’t terrible. You can use the tools mentioned by sriram231092, or put your files on any of your clouds storage, then download them to your phone and transfer them to your SD card.
Edit: I found out reading Boeffla-Config Settings that if you have Boeffla Kernel, you can change the USB connection as UMS on demand, which simplify data transfer:
http://www.boeffla-kernel.de/non-joomla/en/bc-settings.html#Overview said:
1.1 UMS Mode
Default: Off
Expected impact: Make external phone SD card available as drive on an USB-connected PC
With Android 4.x versions, Google decided to only use the MTP (media transfer protocol) for communication when you connect your device to a PC.
This prevents the memory to show up as a drive but only as a device.
By toggeling this checkbox, the external SD card gets unmounted internally (not accessible from the phone anymore) and the protocol is switched from MTP to UMS (usb mass storage) to make it appear as a normal USB drive on your PC. This simplifies data transfer a lot.
Please do not forget to untick this again after you finished using the connection, so it gets mounted and visible on your Android device again.
Note: When this does not properly work, it is most likely an issue with USB drivers installed on your PC.

Marshmallow not showing MOST of internal storage on PC (mtp)

I upgraded my Moto X Play to MM and when I saw the option about the SD just went to my computer before picking any to try to make a backup. The weird thing is that it only shows ss-ram-dumps folder and none of the others one there.
If I search with my phone using Astro everything is there so I'm sure it's not deleted, but if I connect my phone by usb I can only see that folder and if I try to connect the card using a card reader it says that the card can't be read because of the filesystem used.
Any help will really be apreciated, I just want to be able to save all my photos and being able to upload music to my sdcard
