In case you wonder it seems that in S4 there is a bootloader hardware-level protection which can not be restored back once it is triggered (possibly efuse or something).
http://www.sammobile.com/2013/09/23...t-seems-to-prep-the-device-for-use-with-knox/
Hope not
It is coming to all 4.3 firmwares, for the s3, note 2, s4, and note 3.
I don't get it. What does it mean. Cant we root anymore?

Not with out Samsung being able to tell.
It's a new bootloader in 4.3 that shows if you flash a different rom and ATM there is no fix so Samsung can refuse to fix. Look on s4 threads
Thnx will do that

Don't update the bootloader unless you want KNOIX, and yes you can root still.
As always, flashing with CWM is 100% safer than Odin. It helped most of us avoid the untriganle-away-able bootloader for the S3 adn it is helping people avoid the KNOX bootloader on the S4. Those of you that like to dive on the Odin flashable firmwares... more fool you.

Agree that cmw is safer than Odin. I'm going to wait for custom stock 4.3 firmware.

So, first of all i think this is going to be a very usefull thread to many people.
Second, i couldn't find any info about relocking and unrooting galaxy s3 anywhere...
And the deal is:
I have a rooted unlocked galaxy s 3 with foxhound rom and CWM.
I have a full warranty on my phone, which means if it breaks, gets water or falls off the moon to the earth, they will repair it or give me new one.
(In denmark its pretty famous to do so with expensive stuff..)
And my galaxy got a screen crack, so now i want it repaired. The problem is that they stated clearly if i root or unlock the odin, they wont cover my problem.
Please tell me in a newbie step by step way how to relock the bootloader, remove the count of installations and unroot my phone so i can get it repaired.
Everything works just fine on it. Except a nasty crack....
Any thorough help is appreciated.
Thank you very very much in advance.

Search this forum for unrooting. You need to use triangleaway and flash the stock rom of your region. If you're downgrading you'll get a bootloop after this. Go into recovery, do a factory reset and you're good to go.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
This is as easy as it get - get triangle away and reset your flash counter
go to sammobile.com and find your firmware - flash with ODIN and your'e good to go. Only thing - odin will delete your internal SD card so backup your photo music etc'
you can nandroid your ROM to the external card prior to that.....

What about re securing the bootloader and removing CWM recovery?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
If you flash a complete OEM tar file it will override your bootloaderand will flash stock recovery over yours
You will have to flash custom cf-root recovery in order to re root it

hey guys, I'm new here. So from what I read, there is no problem after rooting, to unroot the phone and make it look as stock as ever, with a reset kernel counter, so they will have no way of knowing it was rooted, and it will have its waranty (similar to unrooting a nexus phone and getting back the warranty)? Please, tell me, I am buying an S3 and I really want to root it but it is an expensive phone, I really don't want to void the warranty irreversably
Yes

Flashing stock will reflash stock recovery, and all variants of the S3, except the US Verizon one, have unlocked bootloaders (no relocking the bootloader is needed.), just run triangle away, flash stock, wipe data in recovery and you are good to go.
Ok, will do. But I'm pretty sure I unlocked my bootloader

Just ODIN back to stock and your bootloader will be locked again.
I would check the flash counter also if I was taking it to Verizon. Good news triangle away supports our device now.

Youre not supposed to odin anything EXCEPT imnutz odin file to get back to stock. With the bootloader unlock it will let you flash anything. So to be better safe than sorry and help prevent people from flashing what they should be not they said dont flash anything. That way they dont have dozens of people bricking their phones. Ive read in multiple threads and if you search adams thread youll find there is no problem with flashing back to stock with odin.

OP, did it work? Did you successfully return it? I need to do the same, but if reflashing the stock ROM and triangle-away'ing didn't work, please let me (and others from the future who want to do the same... hello people of the future!...) know what happened for you. Thanks.
I flashed mine back to stock and returned it. No charges yet depending how you rooted your device, your flash counter might be tripped. To check power off, hold up, power and home button. It should say something like:
Custom binary: no
Samsung official

This is exactly what I was wondering too. I can't believe I haven't found this thread before, shouldn't have started one myself, I guess. My assumption, based on what I've read is that you can still use the imnuts restore after 4.1.2, and that there's no real need to re-lock...but I'm still waiting on a confirmation of that.
Hi. I'll be soon getting S3, probably with 4.1 firmware. I woud like to flash 4.3 from Samsung or CM 11 onto it. Are there any custom roms on 4.3 that don't flash new bootloader (or just knox)? And is there a way back if you already flashed new bootloader and knox? I know about workarounds for root etc., but I know too that it still causes problems on custom roms? Thanks.
You are missing lots of basic knowledge on the s3, it doesn't have knox, bootloader is irrelevant to the firmware and custom roms are already rooted.
Go read the sticky thread in general forum before you flash anything.

Thanks, I will read stickies etc. I just have had 2 Sony handsets which modding I know very well, and I face samsung and knox stuff for the first time, and I read that it appears on s3 with 4.3 update, and then saw a note that there is a problem on kitkat rom related to knox. So as I understood I have nothing to worry about flashing 4.3 update and still will be able to have fun with customs?
Thank you.

It is not possible to downgrade the Verizon Galaxy S3, attempting to do so can brick your device.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Theoretically, it probably is possible. It's been done on the AT&T version, which suffers from the same problem of the locked bootloader. You would have to be rooted, and use Mobile Odin, which does not install the bootloader. It should be possible to run a hybrid firmware with 4.1.2 OS and the 4.3 bootloader and modem (don't try to downgrade the modem) via this method. However, it's probably more risk than is necessary. IF you attempt to be brave and use this method, make sure to back up your EFS, because if you lose that, then something like the phone not booting will be the least of your worries. Would be advisable to have the 4.3 official firmware and Odin ready, in case it doesn't work out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2625461&highlight=at&t
I do not recommend this method, especially for those new to the Android and / or flashing world. Any attempt to do something like this is solely your risk and responsibility. I only provide the info of possibilities. I do not have a VZW S3 in front of me to try, nor would I probably bother if I did as the benefits do not outweigh the time and potential for trouble.
So did anybody try it on the Verizon Galaxy S3?
I have Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 which was recently upgraded to Lollipop (5.0.1). The phone was not rooted. I am looking for a way to root it now. Any suggestion, instructions?

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask, but I just updated my Verizon GS4 to 5.0.1 using the OTA updates and I can boot into both the recovery and download modes. If i can boot into these what's stopping me from just flashing a new ROM in the download mode (it explicitly says this mode is used to install a custom OS) or applying an update from my external storage in the recovery mode?
Thanks!

You can go ahead and do that but you will probably brick your phone. Steps to flashing a custom OS is usually, root your phone and then unlocking the bootloader. After unlocking then you can install a custom recovery image. From the recovery you can flash custom OS and kernels. I believe the custom OS you are talking about is for an OS that is straight from Verizon. I wouldn't dare flash any ROM from Cyanogen, or Liquid or ASOP etc through the built in recovery of the phone. That's why you install a custom recovery from TWRP or Clockwork. It's your phone so you go ahead and do what you like, if it does work, well hell, let me know. Good luck.

Root
I tried to root after I installed lollipop OTA. Root checker said I wasn't rooted. It's then I found out I made a big mistake. After
a charge up the other night I turned my phone back on & noticed the lock symbol in the screen showed the unlocked lock.
Now my question is ....... is my phone unlocked , or is it just there is no bootloader that can gain access to the system?
All help with this is welcome!
Now that I think about it I realize what's happening. The phone unlocked the boot loader won't give me access to the system.
Boy it feels like I'm at the gate but can't get in.

Your bootloader isn't unlocked. There's not even a root method for this OC1 OTA. Samsung and Verizon have locked the bootloader permanently since 4.3 Jelly Bean. No bootloader has been unlocked since. None! There's a whole lot more technicalities to unlocking the bootloader than simply rooting. Chances are u may have tripped your KNOX counter, meaning your warranty is void. And it's irreversible.
So...VRUGOC1 OTA Update = NO CUSTOM ROM, RECOVERY, UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER, ROOT, OR DOWNGRADE.

OK Let me backup. I guess I typed this improperly without thinking.
I realize that this is a very technical process to unlock phones . I also realize that there is not a method @ THIS TIME to gain root access to th S4.
Let me start over.
Before I received the OTA update I had tried Towel Root with no success. Then after I got th OTA I tried Odin without success. Now I did not know at the time time there wasn't an available method to root. Shortly after research I found out.
I have read root is not the problem but the is no way to unlock the bootloader. I just noticed the unlock symbol & had to question it.
I could give a damn if my warranty is void .I have 1 rooted phone. My be the other some time down the road ?
Good news!!!

SEARCH BEFORE POSTING EVERYTHING ASKED IN THIS THREAD HAS BEEN COVERED
THERE IS NO CUSTOM RECOVERY FOR VERSION'S GALAXY S4 PERIOD
the only thing you can do is root and install safe-strap
then your options for roms are as follows
1: kitpop 1.3 <Which is the only ASOP Rom
2: or Hyperdrive Rls20
Those two are your ONLY Options
if you took the OTA you will be unable to downgrade to NC5 which is the only possible candidate for getting custom kernels to boot which hasn't happened yet
