This is an automated nooter file to streamline the rooting process for the NookColor. This has been tested by myself and others.

Custom Kernel to display something while working.
How to Use:
Before you begin:
* To update to 1.0.1 you must do a complete wipe.
* You must update to 1.0.1 to use AutoNooter 2.12.25 Instructions Here.
1 You must already have a registered NOOKcolor
2 You must have a Gmail/Youtube linked Account. IF you used a Gmail account for B&N Registration you should use that one for this process.
3 You must either have dd (Linux) or WinImage (Windows) software.
4 You must have an external microSDCard reader or this will not work. Do NOT use the NC.
5 You must have enough intelligence to follow instructions.
Let's get started:
1 Download Auto-Nooter from here: auto-nooter-2-12-25.img.zip
2 Linux: Unzip and use dd if=auto-nooter-2-12-25.img of=/dev/sdcard
2 Windows: Unzip and use WinImage to "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image" to your SDcard.
2 Windows Alternative: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download
3 Unplug your NOOKcolor from computer. (If Plugged in.)
4 Insert AutoNooter SDcard into your NOOKcolor.
5 Plug the USB cable into your computer and your NOOKcolor. (This will boot up the NOOKcolor.)
6 Your NookColor will reboot when it's done.
That was the hard part, now to the simple stuff.
7 Upon boot unlock your screen.
8 At the Android Welcome Screen skip Sign In.
9 Enable Location Services when given the option.
10 Connect to Wifi and launch Youtube from "Extras".
11 Click the Menu button (The one RIGHT of the Up Arrow).
12 Select "My Channel" and Login using your Gmail Account.
13 Exit Youtube and Launch Gmail from "Extras".
14 Sync your Gmail Account and Exit. (If it fails to sync that is fine.)
15 Open up Market and Accept Terms and Service.
If you made it this far your nook should be successfully Rooted. Go Download an App to make sure.
16 Enable Non-Market Installs by running the NookColor Tools App.
17 If your Youtube fails to launch Uninstall and Reinstall Youtube from /data/app
18 Go to Settings > Device Info > SdCard > UnMount > Format
Complete Wipe:
1 8 Failed Boots > Wipes /system
2 Factory Reset > Wipes /data
You must do both of these to completely wipe clean your NOOKcolor.
Is it safe to try this after already having done Nooter 0.2?
The manual market install hasn't done the trick for me. Every time I have to restage the thing, if I'm not at home, I have to run out and find a wi-fi point to re-register it (argh).
I've had no ill effects from running this over an already nootered system with Market already fully functioning.

I already have the market hack working but I don't have calendar and live wallpapers and some other stuff listed.
So just to be extra clear, this is save to just install over what I have already?

I dunno. Some people don't tether and probably don't want to hassle switching back and forth. I think that one is kinda optional right now. Probably better off waiting for a good, permanent ad-hoc / infrastructure fix.

When installed, it defaults to the "stock" Infrastructure (AP) only wpa_supplicant that shipped with the NC. This simply gives them the option off switching to ADHOC mode if they need it.
I've been watching the progress on adhoc and it's currently unstable. As soon as there's a more stable adhoc solution it will most definitely be put in a future version.
Same server error as before for the Market.

This is the same thing that occurred with the manual Market enable process.
I'm convinced there's still something wrong with this whole process for some of us. I know there's 3-4 people getting the same server error as me for the market.
Should I try the manual editing of the packages.xml file?
You can always try to do a factory fallback then rerun autonooter or go look in freenode.net's #nookcolor, others have confirmed that Market works with this so there may be another issue someone in there can help you figure out.
There's been some suggestion that the androidID may not have been properly create, this may of happened if you messed with the db that holds it.

Yeah, there's a problem with the process still somehow. This is the same results as the manual process.
This is much easier though and faster to redo. Maybe they'll find the bug in the process for those of us that it doesn't work for.
EDIT: Just a note. The Auto-Nooter didn't change my packages.xml file to remove these lines:

Not sure if it was supposed to...but it's in the manual install instructions.
Well if you can come into the irc chat maybe someone there can help you figure out the issue and we can see about adding the fix the next version.
Thanks to auto-nooter I was able to get farther than I did before with nooter .2 version. However, I've got a new problem.
After rebooting the NookColor, it started the Android tutorial. Then, when I tried to set up my Google account, I couldn't click on the "Enter Account" option since I already have a Google account. When I tried the enter account in the future option, Android seemed to immediately crash on me and the NookColor went to the normal B/N interface.
I power cycled the NookColor. However, now it immediately goes into the B/N interface, and I never see Android.
Any ideas?

Well you were suppose to skip the entering info so that it'd ask you if you want to enable location. I'm not sure if it's possible or not to get SetupWizard running again. I don't know anyone that's tried either.

Certain Espresso owners running CM6 (or CM6 derivatives) may have discovered that their wifi functionality doesn't work as expected. The issue is well-documented on the CM6 issue tracker [issue 2153] and the cause of the problem is known, but there is no source-based solution at the moment. As such, there's no easy way to distribute a fix for working wifi within a packaged CM6 zip.
The issue relates to missing GPL'd drivers for the MSM7227 chipset from Qualcomm that is used in several devices, most notably the HTC Espresso, Legend and Aria. But due to small versioning differences in certain aspects of this chipset, some devices have functioning wifi using the generic open-source SDIO modules and others do not. The permanent solution for this issue is cajoling HTC into releasing this code -- this process is already underway -- but, in the meantime, this thread will serve to provide a temporary solution that is 100% effective.
So let's get started...
Step 1: Downloading the necessary files
Attached to this post are the two files necessary to fix this issue:
sdio.ko
tiwlan_drv.ko
They both come from *stock* Espresso -- the code currently in use in the CM6 repository does not generate fully-functional versions of these modules.
Download the "modules.zip" file to your PC and extract the two files to an easily accessible location.
Step 2: Backing up the corresponding files on your device [optional]
This optional step will walk you through backing up the existing files on your device. This is completely unnecessary as those files can simply be restored by re-flashing a CM6 zip, but I figured that people should get in the habit of backing up stock files before modifying their device.
To do so, execute the following two commands -- both can be done while the phone is booted up or in recovery (if you're in ClockworkMod recovery, just make sure your system partition is mounted -- partitions->mount /system):

To use my PC as an example, I would connect my Slide via USB and enter the following commands on the command line:

Step 3: Replacing the files on your device
So now we're ready to make the actual modification. First step: boot into recovery. My preferred method is to use the ADB REBOOT RECOVERY command.
Once you're in ClockworkMod Recovery, please make sure system is mounted -- partitions->mount /system
Then you would simply execute these two commands:

Once you've pushed these files, simply reboot your device and you're done! You should no longer have any issues with your wifi connectivity, including (but not limited to) full wifi tether functionality when using the Wireless Tether 2.0.5 application.
And, again, all credit for this temporary fix goes to knowmercymod (who is far too humble to post this himself).
Saving this space for future updates...
I hope this fixes my frequent disconnects, but on the legend section they fixed the problem by changing the channels to 14 instead of 11, not sure if that will work for espresso.

I did it, not sure if it did anything. Weird thing is, after pushing the 2 files I noticed I forgot to mount the system folder but it said it transfered successfully.. *shrugs*
I think tethering was working before, either way though, it works now

Just chiming in to say this works for me. Takes a little longer now to connect to an access point than it used to, but rock solid after that. With s-off, didn't even have to be in recovery, just mounted system rw, pushed files, and rebooted.

If you have not applied s-off patch by alpharev, then you have to push the files while in clockwork recovery, after going to the partitions menu and selecting mount /system. If you are in fact s-off, you have to use a terminal emulator and type [code}mount -o rw,remount /system[/code] and then push the files

CM6 wifi works fine for me, but would these drivers work better with my phone anyways since they're specifically made for this phone?
Applied this on Arayaray revamped which seemed to have spotty wifi for me especially when accessing the market. After applying this the wifi is perfect not a single problem at all now, thanks so much!!
I refuse to connect my phone to my pc. Is there any way to get these files pushed onto my phone? Terminal Emulator work? If not, it's cool. Wifi seems to be working for the most part under CM6.

It depends. These files are taken *directly* from the stock espresso rom and are known-good. If you're not having any issues with wifi running CM6 I don't feel comfortable telling you this will "improve" anything -- but I don't think it would hurt. In any case, if you follow my instructions you will have backed up the original files and can restore them at any time.

Uhhhh -- why? That seems incredibly myopic and weird. You know what -- never mind -- I don't want to know. You can use a terminal emulator on the device to move the two files from your sdcard to their rightful place on /system. I'll leave it as an exercise to the user to figure out the correct commands to do so.
Well I'll tell you anyways... MyTouch Slide always acts funny when plugged via USB to my pc, more-or-less so Windows 7. I could say this is an uncommon issue, but it's not. So it's not weird.

Hey guys I just pushed the 2 files to my phone, I'm running CM 6.1.1-Slide - since I flashed to 6.1 and then reflashed to 6.1.1 I have had 0 Wifi capability. So I push these files and followed the instructions, and well I still have no wifi. I will enable it and it will scan, try to authenticate and then disconnect and repeat.......any ideas???

Sounds like an issue with your router...
No its def not the router, phone would connect all day long before switching to CM.
I am by no means an expert, i just dove into this project 4 days ago, and since then, I've had to reformat my SD card about 8 times before I figured out how to get it stable. But now I have it running pretty stable, there are some issues still, but it at least runs linux pretty well. I'm mainly posting this because this would have saved me a lot of digging 4 days ago, and I figured I would help out any n00bs that just got a lapdock and just started playing with webtop.
*Disclaimer* I am not an expert, if you have a problem with any of these steps, please do not post them here, but in their respective threads. I take no credit for developing any of this, im just posting a list of steps from multiple sources. Also, if you break something, its not my fault*
The Guide
By the end of this guide, you will have a more functional linux as your webtop, with the XFCE4 interface. This uses webtop2sd, so if you break anything, you should be able to start over.
You will need a rooted Atrix, a lapdock (or other external device for using webtop on), and a microSD card, I suggest 2GB or bigger. I have a 32GB PNY class 10 card, for example.
1. Lets format/partition the SD card. Sogarth explains here how to do that. I highly suggest NOT doing this on your phone,and use a PC instead.

3. Now plug it in to your lapdock, and it should boot up into the new webtop. You should see 2 icons in the middle, the awn-dock config tool, and the webtop config tool. We just need to focus on the latter one. Open that up, click on Administration on the left,and click on Install by lxterminal. Try clicking on the terminal icon on the dock, if it comes up, you are gold. If it acts funky, like your screen goes black but doesn't open the terminal, open up the webtop config tool again, and the button to install it should be lit up again. You know its installed if you click install,close out the config tool, and reopen it to see Install grayed out.
4. If all goes well, you should be at a terminal. The first thing we want to do, is fix a really annoying and OS breaking bug, regarding the tzdata package. It seems to be corrupted, so we want to make sure it doesn't get in the way of installing other packages. This issue was the bane of my existence for 3 days.

5. When you get back into the webtop, lets run the Webtop Scripts, the files and instructions are here for that. This will fix many broken dependencies. Arvati did a great job with these fixes!

just put that file in your downloads folder, then run the commands from that first code box, and I just said yes everytime it asked you what you wanted to do. I would reboot your phone again after this.
6. Now lets start installing stuff! Lets start with synaptic, which works a lot better if you install via command line instead of the webtop config tool.
So run this from the terminal:

7. Open up synaptic by typing 'sudo synaptic' into the terminal. Lets install XFCE4 now, just search for that there,and install the XFCE4 package, it should install all of the other required packages to run the new interface.
8. Once it is installed,we need to disable the webtop interface,and enable xfce4. I referenced this thread to do that:

Type this into the terminal to edit the right file

put a # in front of
sfalv -i "awm-autostart"

so it looks like

then add these 2 lines
sfalv -i "xfce4-session"
sfalv -i "xfce4-panel"
save it then reboot your phone. Hopefully you should be in XFCE4 now!

You could use an app like ESFileExplorer on your phone to drag and drop files, this is what I have been using,and it works pretty well for both direct windows shares and FTP. The Mobile View is great for having a window open for secondary tasks like this.

i actually managed to do all this on my own, but just recently came into a unexpected problem. i'm kind of a linux noob, and it seems like the file manager button on xfce4-panel doesn't lead to the stock file manager i was using before (doesn't lead to anything), does anyone have any suggestions for a good file manager to replace it with?

I have a weird problem where the lapdock doesn't detect webtop and says no hdmi input detected. Not sure if you know anything about that, but just wanted to let you guys know (might be a defect on my lapdock). I'm trying to figure out a fix for that now.

To the point of installing XFCE4, and synaptic just sits on preparing packages forever... I let it sit for 30+ minutes last night and going on almost 60 minutes currently...is something wrong or does it take that long?
you might want to cancel that, reboot your phone and try again, it should not take that long

Working w/ Root on a Mac (OSX Yosemite)
CONFIRMED: This works using AT&T (SM-R750A), OSX (Yosemite), VirtualBox and Windows XP. See this link for the driver setup I used on my Mac.

Also, I haven't been able to get the scripts to work in the virtual machine so I've just been "pushing" the files manually. I did open up the scripts to get the destinations for the various files, so thank you OP. Also, you have to have the Tizen Wearables SDK installed and then use SDB commands in the terminal.
Remember, when using SDB on a Mac, it's: ./sdb [command] (you have to use the "dot-slash")
./sdb devices (to show whether or not your device is connected)
./sdb root on
./sdb shell (puts you into the device's shell so you can navigate the device in a Darwin/Linux terminal)
./sdb push [/full path of the file you want to upload to the device] [/full path of the desination]
I usually open up three Darwin/Linux Terminals on my Mac. One to use to navigate my watch in shell, the other to run the ./sdb command (just like in Windows, you have to run SDB on the mac from within it's home location: "/Users/[you]/tizen-wearable-sdk/tools"), and a third to drop files into so I can quickly see their full file path/location.
"PWD" = print working directory so you can use that in the Darwin/Linux Terminal so you don't get lost.
I'm using Windows 8.1 (don't know if it matters) but after updating to this driver my PC no longer recognized my Gear S. Had to roll back to previous driver.

Good write up so far. I had already gotten root from the previous thread with horrible direcions. LoL After I got my replacement gear s (ALWAYS CHECK YOUR SIM COVER), I rooted it using the bad direction method again (luckily I already know how to do these things), but your directions are very clear cut and noob friendly. Reset my gear to factory to try out your method.
Odin'd over the root img and all went well after a few reboots (dont' turn off destination, installing new configuration, final reboot).
Watch reboots, open a command prompt and type "sdb root on" (Switched to'root' account mode)
sdb shell whoami
root
sdb shell setup-folder.sh
-1: /bin/setup-folder.sh: Permission Denied
I went and checked your .bat file and it uses the same command. The device says I have root but it's read only file system. I have been trying every trick I know the past half hour; any thoughts?

Color me embarrassed. It seems in the final uploads, I nabbed the rootfs file that wasn't done yet. Uploading the new file now,sorry for the delay.
I reset, flashed the wrong one to confirm the issue then flashed the correct rootfs and confirmed it working. That was the issue, Im waiting for the new one to upload to mediafire now.
and yeah, I couldnt type this morning, totally freaking out.

Its all good, I decided to tear into some things and bricked the damn thing, so I am sitting here waiting (forever) for the original firmware to download so I can factory restore it. I was not even able to get into recovery, just download mode. LoL
Oh well, if flashing the original firmware doesn't fix it, i'll take it up to Tmo at 10am and get a new one.

::::::Just a quick dirty write-up of how to load sounds with your newly rooted Samsung Gear S::::::
Since most folks are rooting their Gear S for the ability of adding Ringtones (which can be done via a pay app) and adding Notifications, Wallpapers, Watch Faces, you get it......
Once you have followed the awesome rooting guide contained here and you want to load some stuff:
Path for Ringtones:
/opt/share/settings/Ringtones/
Path for Notifications:
/opt/share/settings/Alerts/
Path for Wallpapers:
/opt/share/settings/Wallpapers/
Path for Alarm Sounds:
/opt/share/settings/Alarms/
I have placed both mp3 and off files and they both work fine. Sometimes when setting your applicable Alert/Notification/Ringtone and the file is a mp3, the sound will not play, no worries, it will when the Alert/Notification/Ringtone is invoked.
To load files (Choose appropriate folder listed above)
sdb root on
sdb shell ls /opt/share/settings/Alerts/ (Shows directory listing for /opt/share/settings/Alerts/ on the Gear 2)
sdb push NAMEOFFILE /opt/share/settings/NOTIFICATION_TYPE_FOLDER (ie /Alerts or /Ringtones)

It is SO hard to brick this device so you will be fine! If you get into the firmware failed to install screen you're still good to go. Like I said, I got to bootloops and thought it was dead but stock fixed everything.

You will be fine. I've been able to restore from this screen using stock.
Um actually..... its easier. Connect your gear, drop your content into the right folders (eg; ringtones, alerts and such) and run the update script. done and done.

I wasn't worried to begin with. It's dead, stock firmware flash didn't even fix it. New one will be here tomorrow afternoon. It'll be my third one since I first bought it done my kids drowned the first one. Lmao

Hm ... what was it doing when you tried to flash?!
I was working on changing some permissions, rebooted it and it never came back, don't even have recovery. From what tmo said, this has happened to other people on this watch
hi im looking at maybe buying a ubuntu phone on the next flash sale or intsalling it on my nexus 5 and 7
but not sure if its good enough on the nexus 5 and just worth trying to buy one
two questions how does it run now on nexus 5 is it ready for day to day use and will the operating system be current like the one on the ubuntu phone
and were do i find a list of scopes and apps available
like i want to run nvpy can i just install as i do native like on a ubuntu

i change to and remounted RW
and did update and upgrade all worked fine but killed my dual boot
so if i did RW and then update
and installed say lifeograph would it install that package and be useable from the repository?

Did you upgrade using the system settings update mechanism? That won't be blocked and the update will seem to work, but things will break after some time, just like your dual boot, especially when you start installing custom packages.
Theoretically, the application should work, but you're going to have to set up XMir properly to run X applications. If you are interested in doing that, the guy who made this video is the one who can tell you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3PUYoa1c9M

I got root write - updated and upgraded and it killed my nexus 5 install basicaly wrote over the boot sector I think !
Can I not get a chroot for ubuntu apps I have on ubuntu and would they run? For example lithograph?
Ill take a look I've installed the sdk to test as well I'm certain these apps will get added soon scopes are great but being able to install ubuntu apps like lifeograph and other apps would be amazing.. Is this on the cards or do the developers have to release the touch apps version ?

I'm sorry for you killing your boot sector. Were you able to set up everything again?
I tried the chroot method some time ago but you still need to install the necessary packages for that using apt-get. So you need a writable system again...
You could, however, try to package the apps as a click package yourself. I've never tried that and I don't know of anyone who did, but if you ship xmir and the application in a click package, it should work.
I just had to reinstall and re-root was good really because got it set up right now.
I'm did a emulated rw and compiled lifeograph from source that it might work but it wont connect to mir using cmake there must be a use flag or ill look are cross compiling maybe.. Does it create a click package or a deb ? Ill take a poke around in apt cache to look at packages already cached from install

Great that you got it sorted out.
There's a trick to get the app working on Mir: Lifeograph is an app for the X window system. To make it run with Mir, there's a software called Xmir. Check out whether it's in the repos. If not, the source code should be online somewhere.
The app is probably going to compile as a debian package though. Either you stay with your phone in rw mode or you look into packaging it as a click package. The latter might be a little bit more difficult.
