Hey guys i am new to the note 2 rom scene but owned an s3 before this. I was just curious if you lose pen functionalty with flashing note 2 roms or if some of them stay in tact? Meaning can i still use pen short cuts use the pen for notes or do most roms not include that?

If you use touchwiz based Roms then you have full stylus functionality.
Aosp Roms don't have any of Samsung's proprietary software of course, but you can buy the gsm gesture control app to retain most of the functionality.

Yeah, it all depends on the ROM you're installing. For instance, JellyBeans has TouchWiz, so all the pen apps work just fine on it.

Sorry for the lame post, ie can you guys answer my personal question, but i am seriously considering getting the Note 2 when it comes out here in Canada. Thought i would ask you original Note users about custom ROM usability as it is a concern to me.
I am a galaxy nexus user and was hoping to get the next nexus, but since it is being made by LG i have my reservations. I also find myself considering a tablet, but then have to ask myself what i would do on a tablet that i don't already do on my phone, except of course on a larger scale. Which brings me into Phablet territory.
Coming from the nexus, and being the type of Android user who likes the vanilla OS, my concerns revolve around customization. Given that the S Pen functionality is so deeply implemented into the OS does this result in a lesser experience if a custom ROM is flashed? Say you choose to flash one of the new CM10 nightlies. Is it CM10 just like it is on all other phones/tablets, or does it retain the "stuff" that makes the Note what it is....unique?
Any feedback is appreciated, flaming not so much

I just got my note 2 weeks ago. I came from the incredible 2. I had cm 7, 9, and 10 on it. One of the first roms i flashed on my gnote was cm. To me i didn't notice alot of difference. I didn't keep it on long because i wanted the use of the pen. I did find a nice Rom with good features in a stock Rom (black star). Samsung is supposed to release jb for the gnote.so once that happens there will be more options. After that gnote 3 will be out and key lime pie

I was really wondering the same thing, I'm considering the note 2 but will hold off if the s pen functions can't be applied to custom roms. From reading around the forums it looks like the functions probably won't be able to be transferred to aosp roms. I think they're making progress on the note 1, but not all aosp roms have functionality and they still don't have full functionality. It looks like touchwiz roms are fine though, but then again I'm not a note user.
I suppose it would be a lot of extra work for the developer(s) who work on the ROM to integrate such functionality into a ROM for just one device. I'll have to wait and see it when it comes out. Since the Note 2 well be running JB out of the box, a simple root and removal of bloatwear might be all that is needed. I've def become a fan of Samsungs products since the nexus s though. I also have to admit that the look and overall specs of the LG Nexus 4 are pretty underwhelming. I might have to do something crazy, like wait for something else to come along :-S HTCs new 5" phone with 1080p screen might be the sweet spot for me as long as it has good development support. Can't beat HTCs build quality. My hopes for the Note 2 remain high though as i haven't read a negative review yet.

Yeah same here, for me its between the note 2 and the htc 1080p phone. There are some aosp roms with s pen support on the note 1 and it looks like the note 2 will become very popular so there's a good chance cm10 and other roms may have s pen support. The only thing that's keeping me from the note 2 is that samsung isn't releasing as much driver and chip info so developers may not want to or be able to do as much. In the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTRKL5E9Iak and in a few other threads, its said that cyanogenmod won't officially support the note 2 because of that.
I think the problem is that Samsung has not released the source to the pen but i am not 100% sure.

Makes me sad. Although, what really makes me sad is that i have to carefully weigh the decision of which phone to purchase based on how well it will be supported by private developer community. Weird isn't it? I buy a phone, and change it as soon as i take it out of the box. LG Nexus is sounding better now.

looks like if Samsung Note owners want to retain the full functionality of their S Pens, they must stick to stock roms

Hi, I just flash with Omega V9.1 custom rom + RedHill V1.0 kernel + Philz CWM 3.81 recovery on my Note 2 N7100.
Run smoothly with S Pen (auto pop up), multi-windows, swap ext2SD function.. SUPER SMOOTH...:good:
I'm using my spen without any problems on CM10. Gnote and memo beta work better than the Samsung spen app. The only thing missing are the spen genstures and shortcut for screen capture which I never used and there are dozens of screenshot apps.
Why do people act like the spen does not work outside stock?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
The SPen works fine on custom roms, it's the button features that are missing from (moat) 207 custom roms. Personally I prefer the original functionality that the SPen exhibits in touch wiz, so I'm running a stock(ish) rom.
So to answer your question, wait what was your question again?

Ok now that I've re-read your op my advice would be to get the note 2 over the lg nexus. Just look at the hardware specs, and you'll really enjoy the extra square footage once you get to know it.

Hello,
I am using slim customr rom, can anybody post a working spen app.
thanks, I will appreciate it
I know of an 7000 has ROM that does multi windows.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1981609
SInce I am not a programmer, can someone 'splain in simpleman words why that GN One phone can have a ROM that does multi-window and our phone can't?
Is there a way to convert that ROM to an i717 ROM and retain that capacity?
TIA
The answer to your question about why the N7000 Note has the multi window update, but the I717 Note does not, that it's because the first gets software directly from Samsung, while the second has to have the software from Samsung tested by the carriers first. The phones have different processors and internal components, so software from one can't be typically ported to another all that easily, especially if it something low level, like multi window framework.

it's possible since I have a ported multiwindow rom on my bell s3, we just don't have many devs left especially to tackle a large project like that
I have the verizon Note 2.I'm wondering with the new android 4.2.2 is worth having over what comes with the verizon Note 2.If is worth having, can anyone point me in the direction with it, and pretty much all the programs that come with the Note 2 just with out all of the verizon bloatware. If its not worth having can some one point me to one with the android version that comes with the note 2, but same thing as before with all the samsung apps, just minus the verizon bloatware.I'm not new to loading custom roms, just new to the note 2.Thanks for your time.
No one??? I would truely appreciate and and all opinions/info..... Thank you in advance.....
4.2.2 is AOSP so it has non of the note apps or features. So if you want those stick with the tw based ROM.

Exactly what kintwofan said. If you do end up staying with Touchwiz, the general consensus seems to be with the Beansrom. I have been running it since I unlocked/rooted, and it has been wonderful.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032447
yup beans is best...touchwiz features ith aosp themeing, the best of both worlds!
Well I prefer Eclipse because it's more blacked out and with the AOSP phone/contacts/clock/mms and more. But beans is amazing and more stable at this point based off what I've read.
OP this is where you need to just read a bunch of ROMs decide what you want, make a back up and check them out.

Yes s-pen is TW only, any aosp rom you will lose features.

All the tw based. Just look in development (not original development) almost all of them do.

Beans is TW based but AOSP themed, you get the best of both.

Good morning all youz. I am receiving my Gnote2 (verizon) today from swappa. OK, it is rooted and unlocked. It has Keen put back to stock but still rooted and unlocked. Couple of different things. I thought about taken Tibu files I have on my gnex save them on laptop and then transfer it to gnote. Is that 'correct thinking'?
Also, since it is on stock and I have been reading in all the forums about NOT taking the OTA. I am a crackflasher so I get that the roms have the ota in them. So what is the best rom 'in someones opinion's (winkwink)out there. I definitely need wifi wireless hotspot (not detected) so I can use my tablet anywhere.
Thanks.

From what I understand you can take the folders from Tibu and move them to a new phone, but I dont know if everything will work. Its always best to just download all the apps, from the Play Store or whatever other app stores you use, in my opinion. Some apps may not work and may cause issues on your rom, ultimately its your choice though. If you have problems you could go back to a nandroid and then download the apps from the app market.
As for good roms.... Well that depends on if you want to stay on TW, for the S-pen and various other features, or if you want AOSP.
If you want TW I would suggest CleanRom ACE or Beans, CR is always updated to the latest update with a crapload of features packed in and has an Aroma installer so you can choose exactly what apps and mods you want. Beans is a AOSP themed TW rom with a crapload of stuff packed in too and has a bunch of mods that you can flash after the rom. I prefer Scotts CleanRom ACE but it is really up to you as to whether you would have the AOSP theme or go with the way stock TW looks.
As for AOSP I would suggest Vanilla Rootbox or ParanoidAndroid. Those are my 2 favorites and the list of new stuff on them is huge so I am not going to type that out. The downside with AOSP is you lose the special S-pen features and the special apps like S-note. You can add the majority of S-pen features back to AOSP with an app name GMD Spen Control from the Play store, its a little pricey but is most definitely worth it because it even adds new S-pen features to TW.
