Well, after spending almost 11 hours trying to boot into recovery or download, I know for sure that there is something going on with my phone re: hardware locked. The date on my box is 7-16. It is an early Vibrant. But no matter what I do, I cannot get into download or recovery which means my ****ing phone is literally worthless.
I have tried all possible thousands of combination's of buttons, batteries, and cords while booting and nothing happens.
The Vibrant logo shows, then it shows the pink, annoying as hell T-mobile logo, than goes to the Galaxy S logo which loads for a little bit and then just leads me to a black screen. Eventually the 4 buttons on the front of the phone turn on and then nothing else happens. It will just sit like this forever.
I know all I need to do is get a working ROM loaded but it is literally impossible to do so.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? Or are anyone else having the same problem?
I guess the only way I can get a working phone is to get in touch with T-mobile and do a Warranty exchange. That's a damn shame too, because I will be without a working phone for a week.
What about using adb?
adb reboot recovery -or- adb reboot download ?
I had a hw locked vibrant, never tried the adb reboot download, recovery did work.. I added another line on my account last night for somone, who got a vibrant, theirs wasn't hw locked, so I traded 'em ;P
Agree with the above poster I have been stuck on the vibrant screen or dark screen and adb still worked to save me
when i try to use adb, it just tells me that it cant find the device. i'm not able to boot into android OS at all.... screen just hangs. so my computer is never getting a chance to see my phone hence why i cant use adb to reboot it into recovery or download.
I believe your device has to go into recovery mode then check with and devices and if you see a device I THINK it is and reboot download, I am 90% certain

have you installed the drivers? phone DOES NOT have to boot into android for adb to read it.

i do believe i have the correct drivers installed. i was able to use adb to run lagfixes before i was having this problem. when i boot my phone, i get a sound from my computer saying that it recognizes a usb device. the two drives in the vibrant show up in My Computer but i cannot access them as windows says they are not accessable at the moment.
at what point will adb be able to recognize my phone when booting? no matter what i do when i try adb shell i get error: device not found
It could be the phone not bring in debugging mode, either because it's been turned off or the os isn't getting far enough to turn it on. I think I've been able to get adb to recognize my phone even while it was booting up (at the white vibrant screen). Maybe you can try adb then?
Same problem here. I probably just have to sell it fast on ebay or something. Hopefully some kind of fix starts by the end of the week. First phone in my smartphone life to brick from a simple Voodoo lag fix. Please XDA gods find a solution.

nope, no go. adb will not recognize my device no matter what. and the device isnt loading the OS so i cannot turn debugging on. i guess this is a real "brick" then.
This sounds like a rant rather than a question. Just sayin'.

just do the following , i used to have the problem of going into the download mode and this is what realy worked to me :
1- turn off the phone.
2- plug in the USB cable.
3- wait until the battery green charging start.
4- press the vol + , vol - , the power botton together.
5- when the screen gose black release the power botton only.
you should now be in the downloading mode

this isnt working either. :-(
I just fixed this on my phone. Your phone will go into download mode. Plug the phone in and wait for the battery symbol to fully load. Hold Vol + and _ and PWR until it goes black, then release the PWR button only. It will go into DL mode. Fire up Odin, and flash the "Froyo that does not brick" ROM. It will boot into the i9000 recovery mode and give you an error. Hold the Vol + and - and PWR again and release PWR when the phone goes black. It will go into DL mode again. Now with Odin, flash the factory firmware, making sure to click re-partition this time. After the phone reboots, it will fire right up into the factory ROM.

this is exactly the method i want to try. but unfortunately i cannot get the phone into recovery or download mode. i have tried at least 100 times now with many different combination's of plugging the usb cord in and pressing the volume and power buttons.
two ideas: one, is it possible that i wiped recovery and download mode from my phone on accident? the reason why i ask is that i was super tired and flashing roms and kernels to my phone. i flashed back to my original stock rom and then i flashed the kernel. for some reason, i selected wipe date/cache in Rom Manager before flashing the kernel. i have no idea why i did this. seriously. totally noob move. so im assuming i have a kernel flashed but now there is no ROM installed for the phone to boot into.
two, if above is not the issue, than im going to assume that the phone is not recognizing any button presses while its off, so when i turn it on it just recognizes that the power was pressed and ignores the volume presses, thus not booting the phone into recovery or download.
edit: i should mention again that at no time does adb recognize my device. so i cannot use adb to reboot the phone into the mode i need.
just a comment for the OP - the vibrant isnt worthless, it is something that YOU did to get the phone into its current state. So dont blame the phone for something that it didnt do on its own.
/end rant

I understand what you mean. I appreciate your criticism of my original post. Let me say that I wrote it while frustrated. But I know that isn't an excuse.
The device is fantastic. I know that I did this to it myself. It's unfortunate.
Anyways, I received a replacement phone. I will be more careful this time.
Hi there,

You can do this through adb mode if you have. Go to adb shell and type :
reboot recovery -> for recovery mode
reboot download -> for download mode.

Did you get it to work? The previous two posts are definitely the best way, but there might be other ways if you are still having trouble.
So I already posted in both threads similar to mine I'm posting now, but those problems seem to be different from the problem I'm having.
So everyone says to do the emergency "power on with volume up held down"
But mine never powers off. The Boot loop goes from the boot loop sequence, and if I force it off it goes to "Entering Upload Mode: Cause Unknown". Forcing that off it immediately boots into the boot loop. So I can never shut it off, so I can never enter the emergency "hard reset" mode, because the device never shuts off. Eventually the battery dies, but the hard reset doesn't worth then either.
Does anyone know how to use the upload mode? The link to a samsung driver in the other thread is now a broken link. And once I'm able to write data to the device, where do I get the right set of android hard reset files?
I have no data on the device I need.
I have a very similar situation. Since yesterday my tab got caught in a boot loop. Didn't made any changes, just went into it. And the only way to turn it off is to force it to go to download mode and turn it off down by holding power button from there. I have rooted it a long time ago. I can't get into recovery mode by holding power+up. All I can get it the download mode that first says "waiting for usb cable" and if I connect it to the PC it goes to "press the [START] of Odin3". Do I need to try the fastboot method and reset it to factory details? I've being trying to do that but no devices were listed... Or do I need to reflash something with oding again? Please, just give me a tip.
Does anyone know how to use "upload mode" ?

hi
i have similar situation. i have a boot loop also. i can get into download mode. but then i can't get into odin3 download mode. it's stuck on waiting usb cable.
i just want to flash stock rom. i'v tried flashing a custom rom. but something went wrong and now i have this problem. hope somebody can help me.
If you're using a windows machine reinstall the drivers and see if that helps get past the problem. If you need links I have to get on my PC an copy and paste from there. Keep us updated. I've been there done that I think. So I hope I can help.

What drivers? I've never installed any drivers of any kind, nor does my manual mention the need for drivers?
What is Odin, and why have I never heard of it? Why can't I find a download link for Odin?
Also, why can't I find any information about Odin?
This is the best I can find, but it appears to not be the maker.... http://www.rootingdroid.com/246/flash-your-samsung-with-odin-download-odin/
The instructions on that page:
" Using your data cable, connect your Android device to your computer. Turn off your mobile device for 30 seconds then power it up by pressing and holding HOME, POWER and VOLUME DOWN buttons until you will be prompted that you have entered in download mode."
I finally got into download mode! I had to connect the USB cable to the device. However, the copy of Odin3 I found is just a giant box with blank text fields. I have no idea what I'm doing with it. It did not auto detect my device, and I have no idea what firmware version I currently am using because I can't get the device to boot.
I just got the SGH i757m and i tried rooting with using superoneclick v2.3.3 but it always goes to not responding! So I'm trying another method from
"http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1707126" using Odin
however, my phone won't go into download mode, when i press power and volume down button, it just vibrates in a 1 second interval, and it just keeps vibrating... i tried holding on to it for a full minute and all it did was vibrate... i tried pulling battery out and retry, same thing! (or power+ volume up). When i let go, it just turns my phone on, thats it. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I looked into this for you, you're doing everything correct holding volume - and power, should boot download mode, try holding lower on the volume rocker or try booting download mode having it already connected to you computer via USB....... If it won't work the only thing I can think or would be you have a different version of Android then what the original instructions were for. The thread you linked is your best bet on getting help, the last post was on March 28th so it's still active!!! If you don't get a response in that thread try to message titanic_fanatic it looks like he's helping people in that thread. Just make sure you understand everything before doing ANYTHING......... GL sorry I couldn't be more help
EDIT: Try this first, power off your phone, then hold power and vol- once you feel the vibrate let go of power keep holding vol- to see if it boots download mode? If not try to plug it in to your computer then repeat those steps. If you need help you can message me.

No problem, just be VERY CAREFUL when you flash any firmware (ROM), recovery or kernel to your phone. If you flash anything else other then the exact packages made for your phone you could end up bricking it....... With out a forum for your device it could be hard to get help if you need it. You can message me if you have questions, I'll do my best to help you. If you post questions in this forum all you'll get is "Wrong forum, don't you know how to read, noob, blah blah blah etc" just ignore them, just make sure you read and understand everything before doing ANYTHING....... GL
I got my hands on an s3 that I am trying to fix, not sure if it has been rooted or bricked but basically when I put the battery in, I get the Samsung logo, then the Samsung S3 and then it turns off. Ideas as to where to approach this? Again not sure if its been rooted or bricked.
Its my first time working on an android so please provide instructions if there are technical steps related to it.
Can you enter on Download Mode? Press at the same time volume down+ home button + power button and when the phone request it press volume up. On these screen you can see if the phone is official or modified. You can do a screen capture pressing home button and power button at the same time
This is what happens when I just put the battery in.
videobam dot com/WdRGH
Can't get into download mode either, it will start, show the samsung and say entering recovery, then jumps to the galaxy screen that you see in the video and turn off.
Sounds like an electronic fault to be honest.
