So I tried to restore my phone multiple times from two different recoveries and every time it stops during it and the screen goes black and the only way to turn my phone on is to pull the battery. Everything but the .android-secure restores and I now have about 200 hundred apps that aren't installed on my phone and I don't want to have to go through all that again, the apps still show as installed on my phone, but the the data on my SD card is missing, does anyone know how I can get this back?

Yes all the apps were on my SD card already. But they were moved over one by one so it wasn't a major hassle. I tried doing it through TWRP now and it won't restore at all anything that is.

Also, did you ever flash some kind of superwipe .zip file or anything? Do you have titanium backups? Do you have a TWRP Nandroid?

Is your Sdcard partitioned, and, if so, are you running a ROM that supports A2SD?

No I never did a superwipe or anything of the sort, I didn't have any Titanium Backups either, never planned on flashing a new ROM, still haven't. The backup was through CWM the newest update 4.0.1.5 I tried restoring through that and the Revolutionary 4.0.1.4, neither worked. I moved all the recovery files over to TWRPs backup location and they none of the partitions would restore. My SD is not partitioned and I'm on a rooted stock ROM. I'm only talking about regular App2SD apps that are supported by Android, like Angry Birds and Google Earth.

Those go straight to your secure folder. I don't ever use CWM, as a rule, but it seems that somehow your CWM Nandroid didn't include that folder...I don't know how it got wiped, but my guess is that whatever rom you flashed included a Superwipe script,which would've wiped that folder. (another thing I don't use-Superwipe) If you go in with root explorer or whatever file manager, you can manually verify that a) your secure folder is empty (which it sounds like you've done), and also check under your /clockworkmod recovery folders to see if you actually have a backup for the secure folder.
If it's not there, then, unfortunately it's lost.. You can get the apps back from the market, though.. PM me if you have any 'hard to come by' apps you might need that don't show up on the market.

I never flashed a ROM. . . at all. There was definitely no super wipe. My CWM folder has the .android-secure.IMG, I just want to find a way to get this readded. Thanks for the help

Then the same version of cwm should restore it. Get in touch with Koush from teamdouche/cyanogenmod, the creator of CWM if you're having issues.

OK so what recovery did you make the backup? I don't think TWRP backup work in CWM. Also, you don't even NEED to restore the .img you're talking about. You can restore boot, system, data, and it should boot. If you need your apps back, download them. Then back them up with titanium backup. Koushik can be found in #cyanogenmod-dev on freenode, but I don't think you need to bug him. It sounds like your phone boots right? If you need more help come into our d3rp thread, linked in my sig.

My Galaxy S2 is acting up again with bootloop, and I can't access what's on the device. I can get into CWM and I've successfully backed up my current ROM. Now my question is: does CWM back up everything? Like app data and everything? I've got an app that has tons of notes on it that I really need and I'll be distraught if they're gone as it'll take me a good 12 hours of work to get them all back. So if I flash back to stock, then flash the backup will it be exactly like it was left with the notes intact? Thanks for any replies. They're much appreciated.

CWM backups everything. literally everything. Try going into Restore from Internal SD card instead of external SD card. It might show up there. No need to reflash anything, just restore the backup and everything should be back to normal. Only the data you backed up will come back btw.
Even after flashing a new rom you can still restore the data.There is an app called nandroid browser which will allow you to browse cwm backup files just like normal files, you can use that app to restore specific data of any app you want.

I can't quite understand it though. Why is it even saying no sd-ext? I've got a 16GB SD card for music and videos inside the phone.
After that it let me attempt the backup and once complete (sort of) it says:
Backing up cache...
No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext.
Generating md5 sum.,,
Error while generating md5 sum!

Is there anything I can do?
Not expert enough but for note app, use programs like 'Evernote' which store all of your notes in the cloud. You can get'em back anytime you want.

if you did back up of the ROM from CWM to resolve you bootloop issue then it is wrong...you have first resolve bootloop issue and make back up..
1) the ext-sd which you are talking about is not your external SD card...it is an additional partittion which is made for system data on your external SD. when a rom is backed up from CWM this partition also is backed up. if you are not made such partition on your external SD, the process simply skip saying no ext-sd available, this is not an error, it is not really meant that you have no External SD, this action is the second last one before creating the MD5 during back up process.
2) after the completion of the backing up of all the data it automaticaly create a MD5 checksum file of your back-up files. this is the final action during the backing up. if you get an error while creating MD5 cheksum file your back will be there in your SD card, but you cant use that for restoring from CWM. since MD5 is not created properly, it will show the error MD5 checksum mismatching or something like that.
just flash any other kernel like latest siyah kernel and try CWM back-up is working properly till the end.
Try wiping Cache and Dalvik cache for getting rid of the bootlloop.
if you are not at all able to solve boot loop isntall a new rom, you can install your applications from CWM backup using some applications, like Titaniim back up if you have donated. no matter it is not created the MD5 properly.

Trying to charge it here, and the phone is getting ridiculously hot, so much so that I can't actually hold it for more then a few seconds. Do you think this could all just be a battery issue? Installing a new rom doesn't erase data app since all your data is in /data. It will only erase data if you wipe data/factory reset. I suggest you wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, format /system and flash your rom and flash gapps (if gapps not included in rom). This way, your internal apps data is always safe

Yes it will erase your apps and data...if you are flashing a wipe ROM, but if you have a non wipe rom of your current ROM flashing of that wont erase...
you have made a back up which the process reached till MD5 check sum....that means that back should be there in your SD card from which you can restore your applications..
you go to recovery again and go to mout and storage and mout USB storage after connecting to the PC...check are you able to access the SD card and check clockworkmode folder and the backup file....if it is there then copy paste to PC.
if you are able to access SD Card then you can download another kernel or rom and paste on the SD card for flashing from CWM.
before flashing another ROM you can try changing your Kernel,

Hey guys - I'm back. I've had to use my girlfriends old Samsung Genio for a few days. Worst days of my life to say the least.
I need my SII back. A few days ago it wouldn't charge at all (hence not being able to get to CWM). But it seems to be doing just fine now. Although I've still got the same boot-loop. I've mounted the SD card, and found the backups - they contain these files:
boot.img
data.ext4.tar
recovery.img
system.ext4.tar

Btw could all this be due to the lack of free space on the phone? Seems like there is no space whatsoever. Finder is claiming there is 'Zero bytes' available. Surely that can't be good.

A full cwm backup contains of:
- .android_secure.vfat.tar
- boot.img
- cache.ext4.tar
- data.ext4.tar
- nandroid.md5
- system.ext4.tar
If you do a full cwm backup, all youre data (Apps, Contacts, Sms, Settings and so on) will be safed
After restoring a cwm backup you will get exactly that system, which you had before flashing, bricking or whatever.

I have not play with any android devices since android 2.0 and even back then found self rooting tools. I got my Kid Nabi2 tablet. Runs Android 4.0.4 currently. Nice little tablet. Problem is only have 8GB or storage. About 4gb after all system partitions and recoveries. So my question is can I safely back up my recovery partition to external source to free up some space? I assume recovery partition has complete recovery files when I do restore to factory option. I I remember correctly android has few partitions. /boot, /system, /recovery, /sd. is there a way just to have your operating system and whatever apps. Have recovery mode but have files on like sd card. If I decide to root this device dose that changes anything in my recovery partition. If device is rooted can I just go back to completely stock by doing factory reset? I just want to make sure that if I root it and want to go back to complete stock for any reason I can do that.

Where dose the back up go and how do I restore it later? when I restore dose that bring it back completely to stock, meaning just like it was when i got it? I'm currently running new nabi software do I have to worry about losing wifi?
Also is there a way of freeing up space on my nabi 2 by keeping a back up somewhere else. I think now there is recovery/back up partition. that works when I do factory reset. is that is how that works?

The system, boot, and data partitions get backed up. That is the way they set it up for the partitions.
All of your questions have already been answered in the other threads, might want to do a search for 'Nabi' and have a read.

Thank you. I did read all of them. Do you know where I can find something about android system file. Mostly why I have only 4.45gb out of 8. Is thereba way to move back up patition? To external source to free up some space?
Hi people, I rooted my girlfriends galaxy ace & put link2sd on it to transfer as many apps as possible to free up internal memory which left her with about 45mb to play with & 2gb external sd space, I now have a problem, last night I made the mistake of downloading an official update for it & it failed instalation because the phones rooted (obviously :crying which I stupidly forgot! The problem I now have is that the failed update @ 30.1mb is hogging up the memory again with the usual "low on internal space" error residing in status bar! I managed to delete a few unneeded apps & now have about 21mb space & no warning but the failed update is still there somewhere on the internal memory & I want to find & delete it if I can using root explorer! Can someone give me its location where it's residing to delete it, or can I only use manage applications in settings to do this & delete the data in software updates? & will that give me back the space it took!?

Try clearing the cache of the programs. U can use "Apps2sd" or "Titanium Backup" to clear cache and move some of the apps to sd card to free space.

I've moved most apps to sd using link2sd as previously stated in my first post, & I've cleared the cache of most programs also
The problem lies with the update that I downloaded which failed to install because of the device being rooted, it's residing in internal memory still taking up 30.1mb of space! I just need to delete it somehow but don't know where to look for it!?

I can update apps even after rooting.
And I think everyone here can.
Gaining root access to the phone won't affect ur app update.

if phone is rooted, then ota update will fail..!!
if internal memory is around 30 mb then it is normal (i think, but not sure)
still u can try to wipe cache and dalvik cache through cwm..
or just simply update the firmware through odin...
and restore all app via titanium backup :thumbup:

Thanks for making that point yep the free internal memory that is left is around 28mb now, but only because I uninstalled some more apps after the update failed! I've cleared caches & dalvik cache but if I were to find & delete the failed update, I'd gain another 30mb (totalling 60mb free space!)
I think I'll just unroot it, install the ota update then root it again if I can't find where it's residing & delete it! I'm not too keen on using odiin although I have in the past on my S2 with no problems, I prefer ota or mobile odin (mobile odin doesn't support the galaxy ace unfortunately!) or cwm recovery firmware instalations!

I have same problem firmware update failed and I had unrooted my phone before I started update I have now lost 50mb (app) of internal storage.
You make a good point CrackDaddy "where does firmware updates reside after downloading" I have used Link2sd and Titanium to try and find this failed download but just can't find it, knowing the firmware file name or the format that it may be would help cos I have probably seen it and did not realise.
I hope some member can help us.
There is no firmware file, the firmware is like a custom rom. So there are multiple files which atayed in /system after the failed download (correct me if I'm wrong). The solution is to flash a firmware through Odin.

I was hoping the failed download would be in one place and not multiple files.
So installing updated firmware via Odin would remove / fix failed firmware and correct the storage problem ?
And can we download and install updated firmware via Odin when phone is rooted or does the phone need to be unrooted before download / install of updated firmware ??

it is fine if u flash fw through odin on a rooted phone..

So installing updated firmware via Odin would remove / fix failed firmware and correct the storage problem ?
And can we download and install updated firmware via Odin when phone is rooted or does the phone need to be unrooted before download / install of updated firmware ??

Yes, does installing new firmware overwrite or add to the system file storage space problem
After all, I'm not as concerned about having new firmware custom or official on the phone, as I am about gaining the space back, ( it's not my phone ) so potentiality all I have to do is partition the sd card to fix the space problem, although the failed update files wiould still remain in the system!
Ok so I am in the exactly the same boat; rooted my GT-S5830i on stock rom and stupidly yesterday I downloaded a 30.14mb update which failed after installing 25% of it and now my internal memory is 30mb less!!! =( (if only I had known before hand you can't update a rooted phone!!)
Researching told me that OTA updates where stored in the cache so I tried wiping the cache in recovery and no joy. Using my ES File Explorer app the following folders show...
/data/cache/ is empty!
/cache/lost+found/ is empty!
/cache/recovery/ has a file called "last_log" which is only 7.23KB not 30mb! =(
So it would seem the failed update installed and as said above is in the system folders, so I guess unless I was told every single file/folder name and went and deleted them all all,. the only other way to get back the 30mb of internal memory would be to flash my phone back to the stock rom correct?
I really didn't want to muck about with flashing, I'm a total noob and tbh it scares me in case I muck it up and also then there is warranty issues, doesn't flashing make the bootload value increase each time, thus voiding your warranty if the value is not at the stock value of 0?! I decided to root my phone with the understanding that if I did need to do a warranty claim I could reload the bloatware apps, factory reset the phone and then unroot it thus putting it back to stock mode and more importantly the bootload value will remain the same as the phone has not been flashed!
So I am put off tbh if the only way for me to get my 30mb of internal space back is to flash it with the stock rom! =(

Firstly if you flash through CWM recovery & not odin your flash/binary count remains at 0, & you can easily reset the binary counter with a single click anyway if you ever needed your warranty, right here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647703
Secondly as Android-fany has stated in his post, a failed update resides in the /system as multiple files & not a single file, so unless you flash either an official or custom rom/firmware, then you have no other options available, other than partitioning your sd card to make more space on internal memory!
& thirdly flashing roms/firmware REALLY isn't that difficult, look in the dev section & read the tutorials to the letter, then you should have no worries! (just remember to flash the CORRECT rom/firmware) official or custom for your particular device/model!)

I did a factory reset and all is good after reinstalling all my downloaded apps and putting all my settings/texts/contacts etc back on the phone, I now have 42mb more internal memory, since the failed OTA update =)

If you did a factory reset then you should have rooted & partitioned your sd card before you put everything back on mate
as you're only gonna be in the same predicament sometime soon, either through apps, msg's, media or yet another failed update taking your space!
Unfortunately the internal memory on the galaxy ace sucks period!
You can't have many apps on it then, or anything else for that matter!

Yeah I need to get round to partitioning my 16gb SD card (10gb is free) so all my apps are installed on that, don't suppose you know any simple guides? At the mo I am still forcing apps to install the majority part of it on the sd card from this guide I used when I first got my phone before I rooted.... http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...-force-install-apps-sd-card-without-root.html
I must admit it is very annoying that my apps positions change from what I want every time I turn my mob on and off or connect it to the PC with a cable (ie. every time it mounts and unmounts the SD card!)
Yea the galaxy ace internal memory sucks, but mine is a hell of a lot better than stock which was only about 85mb free out of the box which is quickly taken up by user apps/data etc, but I have 115mb free at the mo and I have about 25 user apps, which is fine for my use, One day I will partion my SD card though, I hope lol.

I thaught you said you were noob & too scared to do anything with your phone?, lol! If you can follow that tutorial for using sdk tools & putting commands into cm prompt, then installing CWM zip on your sd card with root/unroot zip then rootiiing & partitioning & using Link2sd to put your apps on your sd card & never running out of space should be a doddle!
there's tons of guides, just use google, I'm sure even you can do that

Hi All, not been on here for a while to give update to my failed FW update cos was on holiday.
Anyway I have done nothing to my phone cos I was away and obviously been getting reminder regards FW update from Samsung but just keep postponing it because of problem.
I have read all the postings here since (some interesting and good points) but just a little bit confused because some members say use CWM and others say use Odin mmm, what is the best to use and do you require to have phone unrooted for both ??
Also where would I get this new FW update from because the last time I was on Sammobile (2wks ago) and I looked again when I got back from holiday it was not there.
Because I am a nooby I am just a little apprehensive lol
Just another point / if the binary counter on a phone was not at "0" would this cause new FW to fail when trying to install ??
I have a Nabi 2 and I am fairly new at this. I tried to root using the jmzrootpackage path and was able to install twrp 2.2.2.1. even though installation had some fails and differed from the tutorial. I did not update the product version with OTA updates and it is at version 1.0. Now with twrp installed OTA updates do not work. So, I am trying to go with a fresh start and recover it to stock so I can do OTA updates and re-root. However, I am not sure how to do this. I tried following this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074501, but this links to the downloads are broken.

Okay somewhat figured it out
I updated twrp using this guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nabi-2/general/nabi-information-t3229119 .
Then, luckily I found another user with a Nabi 2 with Disney that was in a similar situation and followed the guide there http://forum.xda-developers.com/nabi-2/help/nabi-2-disney-return-to-stock-dummies-t3212480 .
Now I am updated to 4.4.2 KitKat and it seems I am up to date on the OTAs since it is not showing any new updates available. I also did not install SuperSU when it asked at the end of my stock recovery because it wanted to root my Nabi when I need it to be unrooted for potential OTAs.
I guess I am moving onto figuring out how to remove all the bloatware.
Okay, since I did not install SuperSU I am guessing I did not root it at all. Is there a process to root with SuperSU or do I have to restore with the stock again. I wanted the Nabi 2 to be a pure android tablet as possible, so I deleted as many non-Gapps as possible. I am left with the usual Nabi ones that are not removable without root. So should I live with the Nabi Apps or root it and remove them. Any tradeoffs once rooted?

You don't necessarily need "root". You can delete what you want through TWRP.
You can root by downloading the zip

Then install the zip in TWRP. There aren't really any bad trade offs to have root, at least as far as losing functionality.
As far as TWRP goes. It actually can handle a lot of the OTA's just not all of them.

I was able to delete some in /data/apps. It was grouped with some Gapps and personally downloaded apps. There were some apk files that I could not find through twrp's file manager. For example, there is a Cinderella ebook apk that I cannot find along with other Nabi apps. I checked /system and only came upon an empty /bin folder. Also, did not see any /vendor folders either. Nothing in addon_res as well.

In TWRP look in the mount tab and make sure "addon" is mounted(checked)
Then look under just /addon in the root.
Edit: same applies to "system", make sure it's mounted. That's why those directories are empty.

Thank you, you are the man! They were mostly in /system/priv_apps. However after deleting everything with fuhu attached to it, the parent mode home screen has droid icons for all the deleted nabi apps. They cannot be moved to a trash can.

There is an app cache you can clear that will probably remove them. I do not know which one though.

I was able to clear them by going to Settings>Apps>All>Launcher>Clear Data. Google Play, Google Folder, and Settings were left over, including a small nabi launcher on the bottom. I tried to see if I could get rid of the Parent mode home screen. It seems to be tied to the Launcher system app and requires a root. I deleted a Launcher2.apk before and the system did not fully boot and I had to restore. I also tried to use some App disabler/feezers but Launcher did not show up in either.
Decided to install Nova launcher over it. It is still in the background running, but Nova has automatically replaced it.
