[Q] Battery drain with overheating - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I have a serious problem here with the latest cyanogenmod 10.2 nightly 4.3 ( cm-10.2-20130928-NIGHTLY-i9300 ) because once i finish installing it the right way following exactly this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKKKCXmYxpI&noredirect=1,
then i saw that the battery starts to drain so fast and the temp is about 45°C !!!!
and when i charge it i goes around 48c° in few minutes !
before i had the touchwiz 4.1.2 build and this is the first time i use a custom rom, the temp in touchwiz was limited at 40°c or less in full use and charge, but here in cyanogenmod a fresh one without apps and games etc, once i start something like video or activating wifi, the temp starts to increase and battery is going crazy !
What's going on ? i heard many good things about cyanogenmod builds and now i'm so disappointed, i know it is blazing fast but the important thing here is the battery and temp because before i told myself touchwiz is worst, is it a wrong temp value or the real one, because it was really hot from the back !
Before i install cynaogenmod i did a backup with CWM touch recovery and i hope you can give me advice on how to restore it the right way (i'm noob at samsung s3 forgive me )

go to recovery> backup and restore> restore>select the backup file you have. so simple as you do.
:good:

Yeah i did it but with pain : the backp didnt shows up since cm has changed the cwm folder path, so i had to cut my backup to the new path of cwm using root explorer and install the latest cwm recover build ( i had the 5.5.0 )...after this i did a clean restore and back to touchwiz with a reasonnable temp and great sound quality... maybe you can guide me to a good custom cyanogen with the best kernel for temp and sound too

[Q] Problems in MIUI based roms

Guys ,
I tired the official MIUI and the Galnet MIUI roms . Did a full wipe and followed the procedure which was written on both sites . Ended up in the same problem . Battery was charging backwards and the phone was getting really really hot ! .I tried charging it with the USB port and the adapter , but both things resulted in the same issue . It said that its charging but the battery was constantly going down .
Could`nt find the solution to this . Can anyone help me out here
Use OS monitor (search market) to find out what is keeping the CPU at high speeds, also try Betterbatterystats (see my sig) to find out whats keeping your phone awake and the list of apps safe to remove (also my sig) to see whats safe to freeze or remove.
Thanks man . Will check these out and report back .
What is dhd_dpc ? got the Betterbatterystats app and its displaying dhd_dpc on the top with the usage ( redbar ) shown as full .
It does not show up in OS monitor .
Any ideas ?
Got miui up and running again ! installed OS monitor
Downloads is taking taking 50% of the CPU load !! . The process is "android.process.media "
please help me out here ? how do i disable this process ? i went to the running services tab and cant see it running
what should i do ?
Use Ti or Gemini to freeze downloads & unfreeze it when you want to use it.
Thanks mate .
After alot of reading i came to know that , i have to clear data from "media storage" . Did that and the download process got away .
But it came back when the phone was restarted
Atlast got rid of the problem
Here is what i did . Incase someone else encounters this .
* Formatted internal sd card
* Formatted external sd card
*Cleared data for media storage
*Cleared data for Downloads
OS Monitor proved to be a very handy tool for getting rid of such problems Highly recommended .
Nice work ;-) I'm pretty sure I've seen people post here from time to time with this problem, hopefully they find this thread.
Bump again !
seems like MIUI for the galaxy S2 is the WORST ROM ever ! .
Onto the next problem now .
I am unable to create a nandroid backup . Whenever i try to backup . It says "error while generating md5 sum"
I read a couple of threads , but they all stated on how to correct an existing backup . I am having this problem while creating the fresh backup
Anyone care to help now ?
It's probably kernel related. There's a patch you can flash in CWRecovery for Galnet Miui that might fix the problem. I guess it would probably work with other Miui variants. I've attached it to this post. You need to flash this in CW Recovery (not the app) first, reboot back into recovery & then do your backup.
Obviously if you do use this patch, you use it at your own risk, and if it doesn't work then your problem is clearly kernel related & you'll have to do more digging to find a fix.
Thanks mate . I did came across this fix . But it was for galnet miui and i am on original Miui .
I am afraid to try out the file :S .. any possible consequence would it brick my phone :S i dont want that ...
can i flash this kernel on miui ? its Siyah Kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263838
Siyah should work with any flavour of Miui so long as it's not an ICS build. A proper ICS build that is, like CM9.
Flashed Siyah ! everything is working great ! backups are working as well .
Thanks a million buddy ! you have been of great help . One more quick question
Now if i try to switch to an ICS based rom , will i have to reflash another kernel ? ( since siyah states that it doesnot work it ICS ) ? . OR should i flash any ICS based rom without any kernel flashing ( the normal procedure , wiping stuff and flash )
1) Siyah doesn't work with any ICS builds. No kernel sources available at this time.
2) I recommend you stay away from any/all ICS roms until they're "stable". You will more than likely have problems if you use one of these, and they're definitely not recommended for novice users.

[SOLVED] Galaxy S3 battery drain and heating problem after flashing rom (Pardus HD)

Hello!
I just recently flashed a rom (Pardus HD v16) to my Samsung S3 I9300 for the first time. I have some experience with flashing roms from an older phone so I'm not 100% new to this.
Everything seemed to go well with the installation, no errors or anything scary, but the bottom half on my phone heats up crazy fast now(it's been up to 50 C!). The battery also drains way to fast, up to 20%+ each hour with minimum usage. The CPU runs at 1400MHZ almost all the time, even when I'm just scrolling in the home screen.
I have tried to reflash the rom with both ROMmanager and CWR (with factory reset, and cache wipeing) but there is no change. I have also tried to flash Omega rom v46.1, with the same results.
I'm including a dumpfile and a screenshot of the kernel wakelock from BBS, and a system info screenshot, let me know if you need something else!
Help?
As omega v 46 is based on leaked 4.2.2 so thats pretty much common that phone gets heated as it is leaked firmware.Try to revert back to 4.1.2 ROMS

Reverting to 4.2.1 ROMS worked, thanks!

[Q] Anyone have a copy of the ics devil kernel/recovery?

I'm using the Aokp m6 rom but from my understan
ding, it doesn't come with a recovery? it says I have stock recovery in my recovery tools apk. I have the glitch kernel/recovery that I use on M5 but last night when I wiped my cache/dalvik cache it threw me for a bootloop and I apparently didn't have any recovery installed? I have the twrp open script recovery that I can use on the m6 rom but I like all of the extra options on the devil recovery. thanks in advance!
are you using the old official M6 with Glitch or the Devil M6? you might want to use the devil m6 build if you want devil
Well I have the Milestone 5 that is glitched and the milestone 6 that comes with the devil kernel but I'm looking for the devil kernel/recovery that's in a zip file that I can flash through cwm recovery like I have for aokp m5 which contains the glitch recovery and what not. Because when I did a factory reset on the aokp m6devild rom,i was stuck with no recovery. Or did I just do something wrong?

Best of my recollection, that version came with the cwm recovery but the devil kernel build inside.
are you talking about this tool? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2334554
as far as I know, most of those type will not work for the fascinate,,, but I have not looked at that one,,,
our recovery is also packaged with the boot partition and cannot be flashed/installed separately, which is how most of these tools work.
going off my menory this should be what you want...

thanks hhp, that's what I was looking for. Actually it was a collection of old roms you uploaded that I've been getting everything from. Am I crazy for wanting to use ICS? I read reports of people loving their jb roms on their fassy and claiming 2days without charging but I literally have to walk arounaround with my charger on every jb rom I've tried. Do you have any suggestions on whether I should use gb or ics for the most battery life? I don't care so much about tweaks anymore, I just want my phone to not die on me everywhere I go. And is glitch or devil better for battery life?

yay i'm not alone. been using ICS for a while now and I myself have been trying different things for.. gee some time. right now i'm running the official milestone 6 (glitch, devil doesn't like my phone) and i've been trying to get decent battery life for a while.. trying calibration crap even though that's been confirmed a myth, wiped battery stats too many times to count, ugh... i did get 2 days of moderate usage at one point with AOKP.
but yeah as i said devil doesn't like my phone so i'm stuck (even though glitch is amazing). i'm not too much of an overclocker and i haven't even changed governors and i get 2 days of light usage usually.
how much battery do you get? apparently you use gummy.. i've never been a big gummy person. just my 2 cents
@GarrettVW67 I really got nothing for you on that one. I get 4-6 hours of heavy usage. And I'm 98% time beside a power outlet and usually less than 2 hours without charging access.
And I like having compatibility with all the current apps

ics is compatible with all the current apps. hell, gingerbread is still compatible with most things these days.

[Q] CM11 - re-install or downgrade?

Hi guys,
A couple days ago I installed CM10 with the installer and then CM11 over the air. However I have some problems with the ROM apart from the battery drain and heat, my phone sometimes just randomly freezes, turns itself off and when I turn it back on, the battery dropped at least 20%. My very first question would be, if anyone has a fix for this? I already tried wiping system cache, but it did not fix the issue.
I googled around to find some solution, and it seems that CM 10 is more stable and there are fewer issues with it. I would like to go back to this version, however I'm not entirely sure what should I do. My first step would be wiping everything and factory resetting the phone, as there might be stuff left from the previous ROMs on the phone. I reckon I have two options from this point:
1. Running the CM installer again and have it install CM 10. Is this even possible? Or the installer won't even start given that I have a fresher version of CM?
2. Downloading the latest official ROM from sammobile, flashing that with ODIN and then running the CM installer. If I have to do this method, is there anything that I should extremely be cautious about? Also, I bought the phone in Hungary, but now I'm in England, and I installed CM here. I reckon I'll have to download the Hungarian ROM from sammobile for my phone, could someone please confirm this? The phone is not locked to a carrier anymore (they removed it), can I just flash the general (XEH) Hungarian ROM?
Thank you very much for the help in advance, and sorry for the noob questions!

If you want to downgrade to CM10, just download the cm10.zip and flash it on recovery (remember to wipe /system and all user data first).
If you want the stock rom you can flash a stock rom from any country, althrough it's recommended to flash the rom for the country you are in now.
Also, the battery bug is a device specific bug and cannot be fixed, maybe wiping the battery stats can help.
Thank you! Do you have a Galaxy SII? If yes, do you think that it's worth going back to 10.2 or should I just stick with 11, regardless of the bug?

[Q] Samsung s2 & CM12.1 VS strange bug

Good evening, good morning and good afternoon! (Depends what time zone you're in but I like to be polite).
I have a slight problem with a my brothers S2 that I need some advice on please:
Preface - I am not new to flashing phones but nor would I say I'm on the level as some of the people here. This is my third root, custom flash and recovery and I've kinda hit a funny bug. (First being a Samsung Galaxy Ace, second being my old Google nexus 5 due to 5.11 crashing it out & this is my third yay )
To my problem and what appears to be a bug or something I'm doing wrong-
There is no problem with the flashing or rooting of the phone when I've put on a nightly build of 12.1, latest version.
It's stable and runs like a dream. But when I reboot the phone, BOOTLOOP! So, like anyone would, I've reflashed the phone and it works fine - till you restart it.
Would I be correct in thinking I might have just got an unstable version OR do I need to install the latest Gapps? (? = not sure on spelling) to break from this boot loop? Effectively, the phone is dead after a reboot, power down or whatever the case is. But it does make me wonder why it works in the first place only to crash out after a reboot.
Now, thinking that it might be an issue with the nightly version, I've reflashed with a stable CM11 and there is no bootloop on restart/reboot. But I really want my brother to have the CM12.1. It's cleaner, faster and looks better IMO.
So, can anyone point me in the right direction?
May I thank in advance anyone who stumbles across this thread and reads and is/is not able to help me.
EDIT REASON: Naughty commers.
Cm 12.1 is known to be buggy. You compound the issue with that old of a device. Best bet would be search around for the threads on how to pull a bootlog from it.
