I am using tp-link tl-mr3220 Wireless N router which is advertised at 150Mbps speeds. When I connect my acer laptop, the speed shows at 150Mbps on wifi card. But when I connect my SE xperia ray the speed shown is only 72Mbps. Why is that? Do I need to modify something?

Xperia Ray most likely does not have support for anything above 72Mbps.
And to be realistlic, you will only see a difference, if your ISP provides you with internet of 72Mbps or higher.

I dont know if there is any ISP which provides 72Mbps. Its the lan speed of your internal network created using router. If so, how can laptop show 150Mbps?
I was just curious to know if there is any mod solution for it.

Hmm...when you connected you laptop to your router using LAN it will use the full speed of that router (150Mbps) but if you connect it using Wifi (laptop, pc or phone) the speed is cut in haft (72Mbps)....
there no way to modified it cause all router has the same spec for LAN (full speed) and Wifi (haft connection) connection....

WiFi has the possibility for 150Mbps as well.
This cannot be modified, as this is a hardware level idea, thereby editing software will not increase.
Nevertheless, as said already, this speed only indicates to speed between your device (phone/laptop) and router. The real connection speed depends on your ISP and how fast internet it provides you with.

On what things the wifi signal capturing of the phone depends? hardware, kernel, modules?
My ray stops detecting wifi signal of my router if I move away only 10 feet. No problem with laptop, detects till 50 feet.
I flashed all kernels including stock and all modules available on forums. I am using TP link router.
My friend is having nokia n8 and belkin router at his home. His N8 detects wifi signal even beyond 50 feet. He was laughing at me because my ray couldnt detect the signal while sitting in living room and router placed in bedroom.

I'm in the exact same position. My N1 and my eeePC both connect at speeds greater than 54mbps, but the A101 will not go any higher than 54mbps...
I was running a speedtest compare between my Evo and the 70i and noticed a big difference in speed, ~3Mb in favour of the Evo. Also noticed that its only connecting at g and not n. Is there some sort of governing going on?

does you router use 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz for n? what does the archos support?
My router is 2.4-2.5 ghz running DD-WRT. I checked the tech specs on Archos page but I don't see any info on what frequency they are using, just says it supports WiFi b/g/n.

The Archos is 2.4 GHz only. However that doesn't matter, because I have both 2.4 and 5 GHz on my netgear WNDR3700. All my other devices with N are connecting at N speed to it.
I think the problem is the wifi driver from the archos, unless someone can show me that he is connected at N speed with his archos.

I only have 5 GHZ N AP so I had to hook up a 2.4 GHZ "N" router that I have, but it is not really N, could never get 300Mbps connectoin on my laptop, but i get 54Mbps on the Archos, it seems fast enough to me.

I have the speedtest.net app on my phone but i'm getting very high ping ~100+ and download speeds of no more than ~2600kbps I have a 802.11G wifi and a 100mbit connection to the world, do we have such crappy wifi's on our phone?
My wife's LG P500 gets around ~8000kbps on the same router in the same spot

There is nothing wrong with the Wifi adapter.. Flash another ROM as davinder mentioned.. If that doesn't work maybe somethings wrong with the Wifi adapter in your phone..

54Mbps is the theoretical max speed of 802.11g . file transfers are dependent on your system, and not just the transfer medium. For instance, if your HDD is being used simultaneously, your transfers are going to be affects by that. 3MB/sec is pretty decent for a wireless G connection IMO. other factors include electromagnetic interference; things like other wifi networks in the area, televisions, microwaves, and 2.4GHz wireless phones will interrupt 802.11 signals.
Ok, so I downgraded and still got the same results, but the comment about the HDD got me thinking about my SD card since it was the only thing on the phone not "stock" and I'm getting better results now wich is quite funny since the card I bought was a higher class Or so I thought atleast
My router supports 802.11n but my phones connect only in 54Mbps.
In addtion whenever i set my router to transmit only in 802.11n protocol , the phone can not connect to wifi.

The phone's chip always uses the highest possible compatible protocol.
All you can do is switch frequency between 2.4 and 5Ghz band. (I'd leave it on auto)

ok, how do you stop it using "n". on my HTC I could tell it to use "g" to save power. On my S3, wlan traffic sucks the juice from the battery.

My phone connects with the router at 75Mbit/s. The router has a reduced late-draft-N protocol with only 2 antennas so it's correctly using the maximum capacity.
If you have the choice, please try e.g. with a N-supporting Fritzbox of the manufacturer AVM or other similar high-end products. Low-end cheap routers tend to have ****ty hardware.
My router is d link DSL 2740B, I think it is a quite good router with 2 antennas, but as I say my other devices connect fine in 802.11n transmition , my Samsung TV , my playstation 3 , even my galaxy s1 connect with 65Mbps.

I would think a major limitation would be because the wifi chip + antenna are SISO not MIMO. It could also be a compatibility issue between wireless chipset in the gt-i9300 and the router

As mentioned by xtechx, this is a chipset limitation. You'll just have to live with it since it only has a single antenna (meaning it supports about half of the maximum transmission speed of your router for Wireless N), as with most mobile wifi chipsets. Though if I remember correctly, the HTC One supports MIMO (full wifi speeds)

Thanks for the tip!! My Wifi speed according to the SpeedTest app is now 20Mbps which is twice what they were before turning off power save mode. However, they are still no where near what others are reporting for max speeds on the SG3

Wireless devices are built to operate at given speeds.
Common Android device connection speeds are 54Mbits/sec(802.11g), 65Mbits/sec, 72Mbits/sec, 150Mbits/sec(5GHz).
As WiFi is half-duplex, you will never see 'real' data throughput at the listed connection speed.
At very best, you'll probably only see ⅔ the connection speed.
The connection speed is often dictated by the number of antennas a device has and generally max'd out at 150Mbit/sec on 2.4GHz frequency due to 20MHz channel allocation limit, where 40MHz channel allocation is not encouraged.
5GHz frequency connection speeds are generally higher as 5GHz is based on 40MHz channel width.
I have a Sony XPERIA M (C1905) with dual band (2.4GHz/5GHz) WiFi.
5GHz has a connection speed of 150Mbits/sec.
Over 5GHz it has a bandwidth throughput of 109Mbits/sec in an optimal environment.
5GHz is a higher frequency than 2.4GHz so it will not have the same signal strength of 2.4GHz at distance.(trade-off)
If you really want to test WiFi throughput on an Android device, you have to use iPerf for Android and then install a Windows/linux version of iPerf on a NAS/PC.
This will provide true maximum bandwidth/throughput available to your Android device in a LAN where your testing servers should not bottleneck the Android device you are testing.
Because of the channel allocation, you have to have a 802.11ac router if your Android device supports 802.11ac to obtain the max. 802.11ac throughput.

I have an Active but its probably the same for the regular S4.
I was just transferring a bunch of music files to my phone wirelessly and I was shocked how slow it was.
I just got under 2MB/s on a 72mbit link with WPA2 AES encryption.
I had full bars connecting to a Asus AC66U router.
I thought AC wifi is capable of almost gigabit speeds.
How do I see if my phone is using N or AC? Is there a way to force an AC connection.
Anyone else have the Asus AC router?

Are you transferring to the internal memory or an sdcard.
Make sure you are actually connecting to the right access point. By default, the 2.4 and 5 GHz APs will have the same SSID, so just change one so they are different and always connect to the fast one.
On my rt-ac66u the 5GHz upload (file writing to NAS) speed is nearly 3x faster than the 2.4GHz from phone.

That depends on the Internet speed you pay for through your provider. The router can handle 1GB speeds.

It also depends on the speed of the phones processor and write speeds on the memory card whether it be internal or external. I have an AC66R and it connects at ac speeds I'm assuming. I haven't found a way to find out if it uses ac or something else.

Internet speed doesn't factor in since this is internal network transfer .
Storage write speed could be the factor if writing to a class 2 sdcard.
I have an net gear R6300 AC router and I used the es root explorer to copy files and I get about 9MB/s.. fluctuates a bit.

Are you sure they is no one else around you using the same channel?
I would have rather had usb3 than ac. Wireless is just not reliable when it comes to speed.
(Actually what I REALLY want is gigE. I have 8 drops around the house...could make it 16 if I bought a 16 port switch. That sounds be nice.)

I have the Asus AC router as well. Make sure you name your APs differently (e.g. add a 5G suffix to the 5GHz radio) The phone might connect to the 2.4GHz one otherwise. There is a way to force the phone to pick 5GHz APs, but requires an app/rooted phone:

If you have both networks passworded there is no way it can connect from the 5Ghz to the 2.4Ghz band. That's common sense. Do you take us for idiots? Mine always connects to "The G-Spot 5Ghz". The other network is "The G-Spot 2.4Ghz".

That only happens when you have at least three antennas to do MIMO for wifi and most likely a compatible wifi chipset. I am not sure how many antennas S4 has but you can use WiFi Analyzer to check the link speed. Link speed doesn't mean your actual real world transfer speed though.

It shows my S4 connected at a link speed of 433Mbps. The 2.4Ghz band shows a link speed of 72Mbps.

That's what I have when I am connected at home as well. I can safely guess the S4 only has one antenna and 433Mb is the best it can do. For 2.4Ghz one should be able to do 150Mb but I never try. I didn't even try when I can connect to 5Ghz all around the house.
