[Q] debrand orange uk phone - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just got a GT-I9100 to replace my broken desire hd, i have rooted it with siyah and unlocked it from orange, the next thing i want to do is debrand it, i have updated via kies to android 4.1.2 and the build number is JZ054K.I9100XWLSY, i have downloaded the latest XEU European software to flash but want to know if i will need to root it again and if i will have to unlock the phone again? also will i be able to continue to update the phone via kies after debrand

Yes you will have to root it again. Flash the firmware with mobile Odin and tick ever root and it will root the firmware as it flashes it. Or with siyah through Odin PC. Pick an unbranded firmware to have sim free phone and as for the updates through kies I'll pass on that as updates are few and far between. I guess it will be ok but I think you will need to unroot first.

Update via Kies after custom rom flash

Hi, i have had my sgs2 for a few months and i've decided i want to swap it for a different phone
my problem is, i have flashed a lot of different rom's and forgot to make a nandroid backup of original firmware so i have found the second to last update (original samsung stock) and flashed that via odin so the phone is back to stock unrooted, i then connected it to kies and tried to update to latest firmware but it came back with unable to update this device
i got the stock firmware from the post in original development and i'm almost sure its the right one
i am from the UK and i am on Orange network but the mobile is unlocked, can anyone help me to get kies to update or tell me what the right firmware/kernel to use so kies will update the device.
p.s. i only want to do this because i want the person i am swapping with to be able to update it without using odin etc..
Thanks,
Simon.
KF3 is an official firmware as far as I know. Download and flash that via Odin. You should get update via Kies if it is there.

First is your phone factory unlocked or unlocked by IMEI.If its unlocked by IMEI then you need to check the product code to see what operator firmware is the original but if its factory unlocked then XDA or Samfirmware should have it but clear the bin counter and system data in CWM mode before the flash.Try everything to clear the phone completely.
What firmware do have now??

[Q] do i have a rooted phone?

Hi there , hope someone can clear up this for me.
my phone was bought second hand , galaxy s 2 unlocked to any network,
the PDA : I9100XWKE1
phone : I9100XXKE4
csc : I9100XEUKD1
it shows its running android 2.3.3
kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE1-CL181974 [email protected]#2
i only ask if its rooted already as it says there is an available firmware update , but i cant do ota or through Kies, when i try it says my phone cannot update . i want to be able to update it but ideally not through rooting. ( not confident enough to do that , i'd probably brick it and cant afford to replace a £300 + phone .i owned one previously which i bought from carphone warehouse and was unlocked as i was able to upgrade ota and through Kies . so at a loss here many thanks if you answer .
Install an app from the market which requires root and see if it fails to run.
Or install root checker from the market

just installed something called root check basic which says i dont have root access , so i guess i dont have a rooted phone but am at a loss as to why it says there is a update but wont let it happen, have googled all this and there are other people out there who had identical info to my phone but sadly they too are still in the dark .
Maybe your phone has just been debranded that's why your unable to do updates via Kies, you could ask the seller what carrier the phone was on when they bought it but if I was you would just use odin to flash your roms things come out alot faster on here than Kies.
from your information given i'm pretty sure you phone is not rooted, he/she probably debranded it or installed a different rom for it
What baseband version did the phone came with? You can probably download the Stock ROM that came with your phone and get back to start

I take it your not comfortable with using odin? Sounds like you might have to flash the original rom via odin or root via cf and install a custom rom via cwm. There's plenty of good guides and people to ask if you've got questions. The cf thread is a good place to start http://forum.xda-developers.com /showthread.php?t=1103399

I found it easier to just flash a ROM with root access already on it. (Lite'ning in my case) That way you then have root and clockwork, which you can then use to flash whatever ROM you so choose.
I just thought it was easier that way instead of having to do them separately.
Don't worry though, I'm sure my dog wouldn't even have a problem flashing a custom ROM via Odin for the S2. It's as simple as pointing Odin to the directory of the desired ROM, make sure no additional boxes are checked and away you go.
= What are you even doing asking whether or not you should root your phone on XDA?! =
ok i have downloaded odin and am downloading I9100XWKE1_I9100XXKDJ_I9100XEUKD1.zip XWKE1 - GT-I9100 which appears to be the latest official uk firmware. got the guide to using odin and will start tomorrow when i finish work. i understand this just updates the firmware. i assume doing this will still mean my phone runs all ok . do i have to root ? i really know bugger all about stuff like this ,

[Q] Software Updates not supported

Hi guys
I have the following problem
I have a Samsung Galaxy SII
I rooted my phone and now i heard that android 4.0 will come soon
so i wanted to restore my phone and get original firmware again
at this time i had litening rom 6.1 on my phone
then i restored a backup with clockworkmod recovery to a state before installing this firmware
then i unrooted my phone with SuperOneClick 1.9.1 and flashed the original KF4 kernel
These steps went very well and now here is my problem:
I'm not able to get firmware updates via kies any more
Kies doesn't search for updates, because it says, that my phone doesn't support updates via kies
Hope somebody can help me
Sorry ,I also have the problem
Find the stock firmware for your carrier in here or stock firmware for your country in here & flash that.
A clean flash of stock (as opposed to using a backup as you did) should enable you to use Kies to get official firmware updates.

Thank you for the info.. I will try out later
The other thing is, Did you screw around with and change your CSC? I believe it may have an impact on Kies updates as you are trying to update a phone with the wrong firmware and country code...
Could be wrong, had a couple to drink tonight and everythings a little fuzzy...

Your device does not support software update via Kies?

So went from Orange UK to UK Unbranded.
PDA I9100XWKE1
PHONE I9100XXKDJ
CSC I9100XEUKD1
However when I connected to Kies I can't do anything and get the error.
Your device does not support software update via Kies.
Whats wrong? Yes I am signed in to both google and samsung.
You dont have original firmware and codes don't match from your current set up with Kies server .
Codes have been changed by different firmware .

Change back your CSC to your original

The codes have changed to the stated unbranded ones, so does that mean if u unbrand a phone u can't update the software?
It vary genuine original = updates when the update is pushed to Kies flashed something else you might be lucky .Check the Hidswver post for codes

SpoofFW is another app that may help .
Simplest is to flash your exact original firmware if you are intent on using KIES as the upgrade path .Making sure you have the original codes .
But all the jumping from Kies to Odin and back increases risk of a brick .
Their is no way that a mass update of ICS is going to happen it will be rolled out otherwise servers will not cope .Network providers will take ICS and do what they want before uploading .
ICS stock roms will be available as usual via XDA and Odin .

It was detected and updated to 2.3.4, does that mean I shouldn't run into any more issues?
You are now on the Kies upgrade path you will get further upgrades via KIES as and whenever they are pushed to the server .
But as a method of updating to the latest firmware you wait for updates as seen with your GB 2.3.4 two versions behind XDA stock roms .
Kies get what you are given versus XDA and Odin choice .

Hello,
I upgraded my galaxy S2 to the SFR (France) ICS firmware I9100SFRLP7 by using CheckFusDownloader. It works but unfortunately my mobile is still not recognized by Kies. The message "your device does not support software upgrading via kies" is displayed on the screen.
Phone Info:
PDA: I9100BULPC
PHONE: I9100BULP6
CSC: I9100SFRLP7
Any idea ? If the CSC is not correct, what is the correct one and how to change it ?
Thanks for your help.
Before now I had this trouble with a TMU (T-Mobile UK) branded phone onto which I had loaded generic XEU firmware. Although the firmware wasn't TMU the phone still had TMU CSC code. Using the CSC menu wouldn't let me change the code - I had to root the phone and manually change the CSC code by editing a file in the EFS directory. After that the phone and KIES showed the phone as XEU and updates worked normally.

Which file did you update the CSC code in?
http://smartphonesgurudev.blogspot.in/2012/06/samsung-kies-how-to-update-official.html
Hope this helps.
Just adding another situation where this can happen, I am on a swisscom 4.0.3 ICS stock rom PDA:I9100BULPC PHONE:I9100BULP7 CSC I9100SWCLP3 with CF-Root. Kies offered an update even with my rooted rom so I made a nandroid backup (via CWM) then let Kies make the update. The update worked but I lost root so I re-rooted and it's all ok. However I forgot to take a copy of the Kies downloaded ROM while the update was happening so I just reverted to my pre-update nandroid backup and plugged in Kies, this time Kies gave me the "Your device does not support upgrading via Kies" even though just a few minutes earlier it had offered me the update.
So far I've not been able to get round it, I expect I can solve it by flashing the original stock roms and letting kies update, I'm just trying to avoid having to flatten the machine and set it up again.

Unlocking with IMEI will update the phone to ICS?

The ICS will arrive first to the unbranded phones, and the subventioned will wait to the provider to install the ICS. My question is: If I unlock my phone with IMEI or any method available to do this, Kies will recognize my phone as unbranded like if I buy the phone without provider, and then Kies will bring me the ICS update??
Is there any way to do this?? Convert my phone to an unbranded phone so Kies will always recognize it as this??
Thanks
Kies doesn't check the IMEI, it checks the CSC as far as I know. So you could (theoretically) change the CSC code and have Kies recognize your device. Of course, if you have a provider ROM, it's possible that you only have one CSC built-in and no option to change it.
In that case, you'd have to flash a multi-CSC Gingerbread ROM, change your CSC and wait for the update in KIES. Although, probably simpler to flash an ICS ROM directly.
It checks codes as per .
hidswver
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089874
CSC is not the upgrade path its network settings .
You can convert codes by using SpoofFW from the market .
You can also flash any stock ICS rom via Odin or download any rom via Checkfus .
But once you start moving away from original firmware kies may never upgrade .
