[Q] Phone wont boot or pass samsung logo start screen - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello ladies and gents
Woke up to a horrible morning today. Left my phone to charge as usual, then woke up to see it on the SamsunGalaxy S3 start screen, and it hangs there indefinitely. Cant boot up or do anything raly.
My heart sunk all the way to my socks! :crying:
Can only boot into download mode, however no indication that anything is downloading or happening.
The phone was rooted, however i never installed any ROMS, it was running a standard rooted 4.1 android. I believe its an international model bought from the middle-east. S3 i19300 to be exact.
Can someone pls help me out, my research so far points to it being a 'half SDS' - sudden death! the bane of all tech geeks! Not 100% sure though! However with soo many versions and roms about i'm afraid i will follow the wrong instructions.. Can you point me in the right direction.
I have Odin v1.85 from when i rooted it. My understanding is my only option is to restore stock ROM and go back to factory settings, meaning everything will be deleted right ? apps, pics, contacts..etc? is this my only option?
Im about to cry just thinking about it. but what can you do.
Any assistance will be appreciated and likly returned in kind
Thank you all

I'm soo bumbed, its not even funny. Until any of you knowledgeable capable folk help me out, ill be reading some guides to brush up

Ok download the newest version of Odin, cuz i'm sure i'm gonna need that. I'm still too anxious to follow any instuction without be being sure they are applicable to me.
Anyone ?

what does it say in download mode?
especially, what does it say for product code?

Says:
Odin Mode
Product Name:
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: samsung official
System Status: custom
Then 'Downloading, do not turn off target!'
Hope that gives u the answer your looking for, i don't see a product specific code! however to my understanding these seem to be the symptoms of a Sudden death! correct?

It seems to be sudden death as 'Product Name' is empty.
I'm afraid you'll have to take it to a service centre. Sorry

So your saying a stock ROM flash OR factory restore wont help me either way? Thats bad bad news for me. Service centers around here are usually terrible.

Damn Mike, Thats like the only thing i didn't want to hear! this complete bull**** TBH, android and samsung just dropped a ton in my book. How can this happen overnight with no triggers or anything! just awful.
Anways thanks a lot for your time good sir. Ill take it to a service centre and see what are my options... definitely wont be in a hurry to buy a new one.
If anyone else has any ideas pls don't hesitate
Thanks

Multiple posts saying that failed usually when left on charge overnight was the first indication of what became SDS .
You need a new motherboard is the only cure .

Yes Thanks, That's what i've been reading too. but its just ridiculous, all these phones get bricked by just charging them over night!
The worst thing though is i took it to a Samsung service center and as usual the guy is a complete retard, he tells me its a software thing and that i must fix my screen (i have a cracked digitizer not a the actual screen) for them to even check the phone. All in all it can cost me 60% of the price (when i bought it) of the phone to fix...
Ill have to send it in for a checkup, but only if they agree to only fix the SDS issue under warranty.
If that doesn't work out il just go through reflashing either way...
WORST DAY EVER!

Tmobile/Samsung return possible?

Well my phone is bricked (stuck at vibrant screen) AND "Hardware Locked" (cant use button combinations to get to download mode or recovery) after trying to install a kernel that ended up not being for my firmware version..
IF at all possible i would like to be able to get into download or recovery mode but since im hardware locked i dont know how, so if anyone has any suggestions then their are more details in my previous thread.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788189
BUT if i can't possibly restore my phone to working order i would like to get it replaced; now i have heard that you can get a free replacement under manufacturer warranty since it is "Hardware Locked". if anyone know if this is true and/or how to go about doing this, i would be eternally in your debt
When you find out you can't enter download mode via hardware, should have stopped modding there. No offense, I am no help but just saying..

Thats too bad, ununbrickable?
if your still in your first 30 days (or whatever it is in ur state) then there shouldnt be a problem. Just dont say too much, and be more carefull next time

That's what I did when Odin bricked me. They replaced it right there in the store. Even the techs on the phone didn't know what was going on with it. It was kind of funny to watch actually.
On a side note, why the hell are we still using Odin to flash when it is capable of bricking so often, when we have a perfectly good means of flashing through Clockwork?? Just saying.
if you have passed the 30 day return..you can still get Tmo to repair it because you have 1 year warranty. just pretend that you don't know a thing and say the other day you turned it on...it just got stuck on the vibrant screen.

I used Odin to flash the JI2 firmware and had no problems; it was only when (like an idiot) i used Clockwork to flash the new OC kernel without reading that its only for the STOCK rom >.<

the problem is not entirely user error, it is Samsung manufacturing these phones without an accessible recovery/download mode.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 bricked?

Hey,
I've recently bought Galaxy S2.
It had problems with Android 2.3.3 and batter drain so I decided to upgrade to 2.3.4. I followed the instructions and I had to re-partition. Rebooted my phone into download mode, set re-partition option, PDA and clicked start (as said in the guide). It started doing stuff but after ~40-50 minutes there was no progress - it was stuck at "SET PARTITION". After an hour and 20 minutes still nothing and the phone started heating. So I unplugged the USB and removed the battery. Left it to heat down and tried to start recovery/download mode. It couldn't even start. As if it's really dead
How could you know for sure if a phone is bricked? What should I do know?
Is there anything I can try to see if I can bring it back to life or I should go to my provider and ask him to fix it?
I would be really grateful for any suggestions
Thanks in advance,
tftd
You have a bricked phone, you will need to buy another one.
I don't know which instructions you have been following, but it is not the ones here.
Over here, we tell people not to click 2 things. CLEAR EFS, and REPARTITION.
Clear EFS, kills the IMEI, and REPARTITION kills the phone.
Since the bootloader sits in the partition, you don't have bootloader, so no download mode either.
Yup, as the poster before me mentioned; your phone is totally hardbricked. Only way to fix it is through a jtag (requires some advanced hardware) or to send it to samsung on warrantee. Thats why they say not to play with pit files/partitions in the guides.
There is someone on youtube that can fix your device since he has the necessary tools, go to youtube and search for sgs2 jtag, you should find his video where he demonstrates the process, or you can do what the other posters said.
I'm on my phone using the xda application so I can't post the link for you.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Well from what i have read, bricking is really hard even if u check repartition.
Anyway iam a noob, but just search youtube and forums iam sure u will find something.

Now that's something I shall remember for the rest of my Android Phone life.
I sent my phone to customer service and hope they can fix it.
@achillies400 that dude is trained in small electronics (youtube/com /watch?v=zN7le4GmxZs) I saw what he does but I'm from Bulgaria and I'm not quite sure if the phone would get to USA and back to Bulgaria in one piece ...
For all the people coming after me:
DUDES! DON'T EVER RE-PARTITION! NEVER EVER!!!!!!
Thank you all for giving suggestions and helping me! Pretty much appreciated!

MobileTechVideos have a jtag maybe they can repair.
Otherwise sent your device to an Samsung ServiceCenter!
looks like your simplest solution is the Jtag.
Is the samsung service centre offering a free repair? or are there any costs involved?

Weelll... I hope it's free... though I'm prepared for a bill..
I didn't tell them I was flashing the rom... I told them it was heating up and suddenly it stopped working. Hope that's convenient enough
Check this link out.Its a list of places where you can get your phone jtaged incase it happens again.Near the bottom there is a contact for your country.

okay, I hope it all works out
my phone has a busted up screen guys, claiming on house insurance, if i was to Clear EFS, kills the IMEI, and REPARTITION kills the phone. that would make it unbootable right??
I wouldnt give up jet
I ended up in quite a simular situation, i failed during flashing another pir, witch resulted in a non bootable phone with none ability to charge the battery. I tried to charge the battery elsewhere and was actually able to detect the phone in odin(none visual respons on the phone but stil). there should be a hope of reflashing it from here. could anyone explain why the screen goes blank even if its in downloadmode? is it related to imei/rom?
I would try this before sending in the phone. I talked to some guys in a norwegian servicecetre. If they are not able to connect it via usb to a pc and flash it they probably just change the motherboard!(EXPENCIVE) JTAG didnt seem to be the sollution of choice. changing the motherboard was rarely the sollution, but apperantly one customrom ****ed up both bootloaders(rom and imei) witch made them helpless reflashing it.
I bricked my phone because repartition was checked
I bricked my phone because I checked repartition. DO NOT CHECK BOX NEVER EVER EVER.
I sent back to t mobile and just said it would not turn on or charge and they repaired it free.
Since I have had my phone repaired I have flashed lots of custom roms with no major problems. Difference I have never once since clicked repartition and I made a backup of my EFS folder using Galaxy s unlock from android market also unlocked my s2 no probs
If you can detect it in Odin. Usually it is always able to be fixed.
But you may have to use someone else's full backup dump. But they may not want to give you their efs information of their phone.
Look online for galaxy s3 boot-loader etc.
This is for future people that need help

You flashed a I9000 ROM on an I9100 device?!
Kiss your phone goodbye unless you jtag it or send it to the service center.
You have flashed a rom for a different phone. The rom you flashed is for Galaxy S not Galaxy S II..
I have read a thread similar like this before but
for what I can remember his phone is permanently bricked. You might want to search
in the Q&A thread. This thread is for Android Development.

i don't know how i missed that. could you tell me what jtag is? is it the same as a jig?
thanks.
Yes it is totally bricked. Unless you have chance and want to try something. The USB jig to put i9000 and i9100 phone in download is the same ( Both use 151k oHms). If you try to use a jig on your phone you might be able to put it back on download mode. However, i would doubt that it work. Since you don't have the good Bootloader on your phone, i'm more like 97% sure it wont work. The black screen only is also a good sign of death. Sry to ear that. JTag is not the same thing than the jig btw. JTag is how they put the first information, at factory, on your phone. It can be used to put back the good bootloader on your phone. But if i remember well, only phone compagnie ( On this case Samsung) and a few person have what it take to make a JTag.

Thats from the creator of the i9000 ROM you just flashed.
Your phone is 100% bricked, just wondering why did you flash an i9000 ROM on a i9100 ROM, thats not only the wrong phone, but you also added a PIT files with Odin which also is not good for the i9100, and this ROM contains bootloaders.
its 100% bricked, however there is light at the end of the tunnel. A good friend of mine at Mobile Tech Videos can fix your phone 100%
hes the only guy that can do this around the world, only does it for 50 dollars, and he can guarantee fix your phone.
Just dont do this again, maybe next time flash DlevROM

I mean this guy is 100% trusted, and email him if you have questions.
hes the best bet for getting it back fast, and working.
Samsung will most likely play games, take longer, and ask you how this happened.
its your choice, but hes 100% legit, you dont have to use him Im just saying this is the best bet for saving you
Maybe if is better to send it to Samsung and let them figure it out.
If they ask what happened, just tell them that you left it on charger snd a few hours after it was dead. After all i doubt that theg can get info from inside the phone.
They will make a clean flash plus bootloaders.
That is what would i have done.

the reason why you should send it to dlev's friends shop to get it fixed instead of samsung is if samsung finds out what you did to the phone, they will probably charge you an arm and a leg for it...

Send it to sammy. If they wsnt to charge you alot then take it to the other site.

[Q] Hard Bricked S3 i9300

After Flashing Latest CM10.1 to my S3 and using it for a while, I wanted to go back to stock. I flashed stock 4.1.2, rooted it and installed CWM successfully. After a while I noticed that CWM can not mount internal SD card, or recover a nandroid backup from it. I thought it is a partition issue, so i have decided to flash GT-I9300_mx_20120220.pit to my S3 with re-paration checked. ODIN started the process, Pass appeared with green background. Since then, the device wont start in any mode. I tried every key combination with no luck. Tried to connect the device to pc, same result; device is dead. Pulling battery also did not work.Anything I can do to turn on the device in to download mode at least? Please help me. I am from Lebanon; here all the phones are sold with no warranty, so returning it to Samsung wont solve the problem? any solution? Thank you.

90% of phones in Lebanon are sold through unauthorized sellers. If you want to buy it from Samsung agent here, you will end up paying $200 more. Bought my phone for $520, while it costs around $700 from authorized seller.
Is either that or a $200 + mobo replacement.

[Q] Galaxy can't be booted no more (doesn't do anything)

Hi, my Galaxy's counter - even if rooted - is set back to zero and the triangle did not show anymore.
Now the actual issue: Yesterday I tried to take a screenshot which miserably failed while the device froze and I had to force reboot it. This proved to be in vain as well, though, as it always stopped with the first graphic (samsung galaxy s2 logo). After two forced shutdowns, unfortunately, it did not bestir itself at all no more.
A change of the battery did not turn out successful either. Not surprisingly, the download mode is not accessible and, similarly, putting it on the charger it does not show any response as well.
What can I do? Would the repair center be able to find that it was rooted?
Best regards,
didb

Can't get into recovery mode. Rom was the official jelly bean one which was "unofficially" transferred to the Galaxy S2 by developers but not released by Samsung officially. Hope that makes sense. And yup - as I mentioned - it is rooted.
Yes it makes sence. Jig to force it to download mode and flash with Odin. Have you pulled the battery out for 5 mins then try? Sometimes work.

I tried taking it out for the whole night twice now. No success.
Jig doesn't help either.
Jtag may work.if service Center brings it to life and sees the custom Rom then yes they will be able to tell you rooted it.

That's what they call riff box, mh? Or "Android Debug Bridge"? The weird thing is it didn't even happen while flashing. It worked for almost a year without hesitation and then I took a screenshot and it just dies? -.-
Does seem funny to happen like that. No one messed with it? Screen shot and after that dead? If jig isn't getting it to download mode then there is something bad that has happened

I know it's crazy. After the screenshot it would only load until the Samsung logo and right after that it was fully dead. Would you try your luck with the service partner ?
Tbh you don't have a choice. Or take it to local shop for Mb repair. either way Mb needs to be replaced now so go with service Center if they find its your fault and cost to much get it sent Bk to you and take to local shop for repair.
