Randomly when I turn on the screen I see the GPS icon in the notification tray for half a second. Then it just goes away, and it is impossible to tell which app is using it. It does not happen all the time, but usually when I am outside or moving. It used to happen on my old Droid Charge too, but I thought that was just some incompatibility error with new apps on GB. Is this a part of Google location services?
Are you using the Samsung weather widget? I'm pretty sure that uses GPS when it updates
Google now will also use GPS to track your daily habits just turn off GPS when you don't need it

I've always been under the assumption that it's best to turn GPS entirely off when I don't need it to help save on battery life. I was just reading a thread on another site and it gave me the impression that if it's turned on and the icon is not showing on the status bar, like it does when I'm using Maps, then it's not really tying up any CPU time and draining the battery.
Would that be accurate?
Im pretty sure its true, if maps isn't running, GPS doesnt need to fetch data therefore power isn't used by the GPS radio to fetch coodinates

Yup, although sometimes if GPS is enabled, an app may turn it on when it really doesn't need to, which can sometimes cause battery drain.
Explicitly turning it off prevents this.
Yeah when I think about it, unlike wifi which can always be looking for a connection and BT will also be listening for a device to pair with, GPS doesn't really seem to 'look' for anything, it simply pulls data down upon request.
Do you guys specifically turn it off when it's not in use and by doing it, have you honestly noticed much of a difference?
I'm getting to the point where I'm micromanaging my phone too much and need to step back and just let the phone... be a phone.
i have a tasker profile set up that only turns on the GPS for the apps that i have it configured for, then turns GPS off after the app closes....
So I just noticed in BBS under partial wakelocks that I have 52mins worth of 'NetworkLocationLocator' with a count of 740. I've been having some odd battery drain today and no clue why. I've also noticed that Maps is in 'Running Services' and sometimes there are 2 of them and they can't be stopped.
I've opened Maps only after noticing this and GPS has been off. I run a weather widget but location is turned off. Nothing else I have installed uses any type of location feature (that I know of).
Any ideas what's causing this 52mins of wakelocks?

Did you accidentally turned on Latitude?
Nope, never used it. Not even sure what its for. Lol

It is in gmaps. Once you sigbed in, it will use network location all the time. And there is no obvious way to sign out until you dig deep into the menus.
What it does is broadcasting your location to your friend 24/7.

dig deep into which menus? i dont seem to have any options in google maps itself, besides a couple map cache options, and labs..
Some where in those menu trees, probably related to latitude, there its a button to sign out the latitude. Google made it so difficult to stop latitude to force you keep using it.
Edit: on latitude screen, menu-> settings. On top of the settings screen, trap on the text 'sign out latitude'.

oh, i never use latitude..
i did start it up just to verify i was signed out like you said..
i still have a maps service started that when killed, comes right back..
gps is off, all location based stuff is off, i kill maps service, it comes right back..
i thought maybe this was keeping maps service open, must be something else.
Guys, i've been bugged by this since the i9003 days.. While my sgsl was in froyo i can download while screen is off (using 3g) and after gb upgrade when i tuen off the screen download will stop.. After i bought sgs2 i thought it will change but the same thing happened.. I think it is a feature of Gb.. My question is, is there an app that lets you download over 3g even when the screen is off???

Do you have JuiceDefender installed? It shuts off data when screen is off by default. My S2 downloads over 3g or wifi just fine. I do use JuiceDefender though. I set it to allow a program to stay connected (opera, adownloader, etc). But that program needs to be in the foreground when screen turns off.
If you're having the issue with wifi, make sure the sleep policy is set to never.
Also, make sure your background data is enabled just in case if you changed it.

Your WiFi is set to turn off when screen is off you should be able to change this in WiFi settings as a side note it will cause more battery drain

I want to use 3g in downloading.. Will that work?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
You don't have Tasker installed, do you?
Probably there is some 'battery saving' app installed that has a profile to turn of 3g when screen is off.
I have a same trouble. My connection stops while the screen goes off. My wifi doen't go to sleep and I already checked option "Never" in wifi sleep policy setting. I can't listen music online or even download file has a large size while screen turn off. If I turn on it again, downloading will be continue. I think this cause is JuiceDefender, however, after uninstall it nothing change
i have tried everything. Even did a factory reset and installed NOTHING but synicng my google mail, contacts and calander and after a few hours of sitting there i check the battery and it shows awake Allot. like it seems to wake up every few min, small little lines all over the graph. when the screen is off.
i have wifi off now, and my phone is not active (im on my X), set to CDMA and its still waking up. i have set all the settings that i can think of to off that would make it wake up....
any ideas what so ever? last night i let it sit there all night on wifi, and went to bed with 100% woke up to 60% with massive awake time...
please help this is the only thing making me want to leave the razr...
Thank you
Try enabling the battery extender profile in smart actions. It cuts background sync/GPS if the phone is not charging or in motion.

Only when the screen is off, when unlocked everything will turn back on and your emails will come through.
yeah, thats the thing though...i use gtalk allot...dont care about the emails but i use gtalk
I don't have the battery extender smart action on and I'm getting amazing standby time better than my nexus s with mostly the same apps. I'm thinking it must be an app that's causing you battery problems.

Try os monitor, its free in the market & can help you narrow down what's running. System Tuner has a free version as well & can help you see how your running processes/services are acting. The pro version even gives a start up monitor so you can freeze or prevent certain things from running at all.

Anyone else having problems with Maps and battery usage? All location services turned off, haven't even opened maps, and it is at the top of my baytery usage, saying GPS is constantly running in background when all location setting are off. Uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. I've been getting fantastic battery life but still not sure why this is happening. Suggestions?

Try using app ops and set maps Keep Awake to off. Worth a try. You'd have to enable it again when you do actually use maps most likely though

Did you ever get this figured out? I am having a similar issue with Map My Ride. I back out of the app, even force stop it, and switch location to battery saving, but map my ride will still show at the top of the list even the next day and it says the GPS has been on for several hours.
Has anybody else notice that the okay Google hot word detection does not work on the lock screen, does not work with the screen off and does not work from any screen..
I've tried several times resetting the settings in google settings /voice
Even the "always on" toggle itself gets stuck and won't turn on or off without turning off and on the main toggle..
Just verified this problem after playing a heavy game for while. OK Google bacically wont work anywhere at all, sometimes intermittently working only on home screem, but rarely,
Coincidentally I check ram usage In developer options while it won't work, its been in critical for the last few hours of use time.
My nexus 5 demonstrates no such issues, works all the time. Maybe its oom killer killing off the google search or play launcher apk, whatever apk that is tied into. Just guessing at this point
Yeah I'm having exactly the same issue. If you go into app Google settings under /voice the toggle are glitchy and stuck they won't move. I have to change the main toggle off and on, in order to reset the bottom two toggles.
Until I do this every time "okay Google" from the lock screen or screen off never works.
More people should check this on their nexus 9
I have the same problem. I'm considering resetting the device and upgrading to 5.0.1.
I'm on 5.0.1 issue exists
Why do you guys want it any way? It's a battery hog

It's a very convenient way to do things without touching device. It's supposed to work.
Even on the nexus 6 it's periodic but on the nexus 9 most of the time it's not working unless I do a fresh restart

It's one of the reasons I bought the device. I use commandr and tasker to do things like WOL my PC, and I wanted a device that would always be listening so I can have those actions always at hand. The fact this is broken months after the device was released is disappointing, to say the least.
