[Q] Battery Drain Issue - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im having a battery drain issue with temaseks unofficial cm10.2 rom..Ive been flashing roms for a while now,
but thats as far as it goes for me
Ive searched many forums and found no real answers to this issue, my battery is draining extremly fast, ive got temeseks kernal installed
and have zzmoove profile set, and its on extreme battery..but still high battery drain..Im not sure what to do because of all the roms ive flashed, this seems to be the one i like the most and i find it to be the most stable in terms of performance.
Ill really appreciate if someone would help me :good:

HI, I had this problem in my Galaxy Note 10.1 .
My girlfriend's Galaxy S3 also started to eat up battery after 4 months.
for both of them, I got the charger and data cable replaced by the samsung service center.
The problem got solved.
So, may be this can be your case too.
The thing is, for charging a battery to it's full capacity, the charger need to supply appropriate current and appropriate voltage. Now with the malfunctioning of the charger (source) or the data cable (path) can lead to unhealthy charging of the battery.
Now, According to my logic, (I am not sure if it's true) the phone reads the voltage and tells you the percentage of the remaining battery. But actually battery does not have much current to make the voltage stand still. That is because, when the phone will not recieve appropriate current according to the system's resistance, It will definitely eat up more voltage, and the battery will drain quickly.
I hope this helps you
This is my first solution posted on XDA, I dont know if you see a thanks button, but If you do, and this helps you, Please hit the thanks button
Thanks

Aosp are known for draining s3 battery, especially cm.
It is a simple suggestion, but on MY ACCOUNT foxhound 0.1 based on 4.2.2 is one of the least battery draining samsung based roms if not the least. It is certainly stable, you can theme it with xposed and change launcher if you don't like touchwiz....

And a free alternative to better battery stats is wakelock detector.
Remember if you choose any 4.2.2 samsung based rom not to change kernel, default is good enough anyway...

Hi I really appreciate your feedback, but I am not so clued up on how exposed works or how to theme, Ive tried to, butIi couldnt really grasp the concept..:silly:

Technical-ish definition: it is a framework, so it wraps around android system at startup and patches the ui packages required for it to apply mods.
User definition: a package you can install to mod your phone, mostly for themes. First you install it, then you install modules, which are more packages that come with options. They basically use the xposed framework to be able to mod/theme your phone. So.
install xposed ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401install apk and open app. From there you can EASILY install the framework with a button).
Install any module (they come as apks).
Activate module within xposed and use module to tweak settings (usually they come with their own app, or you can just go to modules in xppsed and press the name).
When you restart the phone will apply changes
pretty easy, all the developing is back end.
If your phone crashes at startup there is a package ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1619566&d=1361912360 ) you can flash through recovery to simply disable xposed at startup no problem so you can then go back to xposed app and disable modules not compatible with your rom that made your phone crash. Some nice modules (you can find installation apks either on xda or inside xposed download menu):
Nottach xposed ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285074 )
wanam xposed (app store or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2383484 )
Xblast tools ( http://repo.xposed.info/module/ind.fem.black.xposed.mods )
Gravity box (download section in xposed or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2316070 )
Maybe you can find some more of these in download section within xposed app, also look there.
There are also many other packages for tweaking backgrounds or just the status bar and many specifuc things....
And there is much more. Remember these modules may make the phone crash if applied together (there is a check-box activation menu in xposed managing , so you can have more installed at the same time but not activated) so it's probably best not to activate the most similar ones at the same time.
Also you can find somewhere in xda a thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327541) which rounds up all xposed available modules. Or the website which is a bit more difficult to navigate, i'd use xda.thread.but you can also find modules here ( http://repo.xposed.info/module-overview ).
xposed may look complicated, but couldn't be simpler!

Try using better "wifi on off" application from play store. Looks like your wifi is using lot of battery juice.
Also try Googy kernel.

Its seems like when my mobile data is on, my battery is getting drained, my battery was almost drained at like 12, but lasted me the rest of the day when i switched off my data
it could be because Bittorrent sync wasn't disabled in data, but ill only know for sure tomorrow..

Here are my battery stats for today

I have been struggling with very high battery drain rate myself for long while. I even bought the fat and heavy 3000mha battery pack - samsung's official, to combat it and it still did not feel right.
Always HIGHEST battery draining cause if I let the phone idle a lot, is Android system, that's weird.
Finall I caved and tried better battery stats and just immediately looking at the core stuff in "android system" or so, seems it is Wifi wakelocking the phone.
Wait what, why is Wifi doing that?
Anyway, pretty much disabling wifi remedies that... THough I would prefer to use Wifi myself.
Whatever it is, and seeing it crosses over roms, even official though there it is least felt - It has something to do with samsung's wifi driver updates or something. I may be just silly for thinking maybe 9.0 that mine shipped with was so much better in that regard.
My hope is lost of samsung actually fixing this, all they seem to so is make it worse gradyally and increasingly.
TL;DR: Wifi is a bish.

Same issue.
I bought the i9300 a couples a day brand new. but i did replace the stock rom with others. and even it`s still a bit rubish, even in RAM. 10h of normal use and my battery is gone... and my RAM is only ~100mb free.

Did you turn mobile data off?
It looks like youve had over 4 hours no data.
Plus, lots of network related wakelocks multipdp... Shame we cant see what the deleted wakelocks are... l2_hisc is high too.
"deleted_wake_locks" (): 4 h 18 m 41 s (15521 s) Cntc/wc/ec)721540/0/9118 42,6%
"multipdp" (): 2 h 52 m 29 s (10349 s) Cntc/wc/ec)4071/0/4070 28,4%
"l2_hsic" (): 2 h 30 m 31 s (9031 s) Cntc/wc/ec)17053/3130/17052 24,8%

Yeah..I turned my mobile data off because after lunch my battery was at 20% and it lasted till I got back home at around 6..any suggestions? Anything else I could provide that would make it easier to diagnose the issue?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

You need to try and "catch" whatever those deleted wakelocks are... You're going to have to manually keep an eye on BBS.
Personally, I would just factory reset teh device and start fresh.

Yeah..I'm going to do that now..hopefully that will sort the issue out..Will let you know the outcome..Thank You I really do appreciate your time

Also remember to use samsung's battery reserve option (i don't know the italian translation for english, it's that icon accessible from samsungs.notification that usually has the recycling or battery icon), because even though a phone can already be draining little battery (which is my case), that option can have a 50% improvement. Which is of course excellent if you can't charge your phone during the afternoon.

A Suggestion For Better Battery Life On Cm9/AOKP!

Just A Suggestion For All Cm9/AOKP Users.
Uninstall/disable/freeze these apps:-
(optional)
Ant radio service
ant wireless
ant-hal service
Aokp/CM9 Tips
Aokp/cm9 Wallpapers (if you don't use it)
Apollo-music fx (if you don't use it)
dictionary provider (if you don't use it)
Google Search
my uploads
talk (if you don't use it)
Downloads 4.0.4/ com.android.providers.downloads.ui (battery eating)
And I Freeze these bcoz i dont need these
voice search
vpn dialogs
sound recorder
pico tts
gallery 1.1
browser (stock)
[playlists] media storage 4.0.4 (battery eating)
By Doing this On AOKP B40 and R2AOKP.img Kernel I Got Very Good Battery Life. Deep Sleep Is Working Without Any Glitch.
That means you have pointed some apps that may cause battery drain or prevent the phone from going in deep sleep. Better tell that to @kormatoes. Maybe he can fix it.
Sent from my MT11i using xda premium
Ok. Thanks! I'll Inform Korm!
My views as I stand
Deep sleep no problem
Battery over one day
Theses apps you suggest
Pointless for me I use talk always
Media I need to download files
All day
personally I think you should mount and format system
And reflash a ROM
I get over one day out the rom & kernel so it's not something that needs addressing sirkay knows what he is doing with kernels compared to 8 hours from a boot that were are meant to use
Basically it's like this if you flash a new rom ,it will take 2 days to settle in and if I bring out a update in a few days ,it's a cycle of not enough time to settle down and just because you have this it don't mean I have your problem ,
My only wake lock is alarm
when we get to a perfect build I will stop and just start to work on the better things themes,ui,
There is many alternatives to aokp now try a stock based ROM if your after a perfect ROM,
But even stock I'd not perfect is it,less ,crap ui, Sony boat

I completely Understand what you're saying. And Yes you are right and i know that because i have these probs doesnt mean you also got these. i'm just saying before these "freezing" things i lose 75% battery overnight (flight mode) which is worst in my opinion (5-10% is acceptable). so by freezing/uninstalling these its only 2-5% overnight. and thanks i will definitely mount and format system And reflash rom. All This Is just To Inform all AOKP users!
Edit: "mount and format system And reflash rom" Done Still No Change. but thanks, a slight improvement in stability and battery.

By Freezing/Uninstalling apps given in the 1st post, i'm also losing only 3-4%. maybe its because of the kernel, i'm using r2aokp.img by sirkay (BB72).

Battery Drain (I don't know where else to post this)

Hey guys,
My phones battery has been draining rather fast lately. It used to be able to last two days with moderate use and Wifi always on (and turning it off when I sleep) but now it can barely last one day (morning till night, so not even 24 hours). The battery life changed after I updated my ROM to Resurrection 2.6.1 from an older version (2.6.1 is the last non-JB version) and installed a few games, but I am not sure that either are the cause because people have nothing but good things to say about 2.6.1. I have posted my dumpfile.
I'm running Resurrection with the FLUXI XX.03-beta1 kernel.
I would have liked to post this in the Resurrection thread or the BetterBatteryStats thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809) but as this is my first post, I am not allowed to post in either so I don't know where else to post this
(I've been lurking these threads since i got my SGSII in November but have not had any questions which weren't already asked/answered before now)
Any help at all would be much appreciated! Thanks
Maybe change the title to "can a mod move this plz".
But I dont know what youll do if they want more info as youll not be able to reply til maybe you make 10 posts.

- get rid of juice defender, it doesn't work
- don't sync your hotmail or gtalk
- post a longer time period

Ok, disabled Juice Defender. I'll post a longer BBS dump soon. And figure out to how to control Hotmails syncing.
However (this may sound stupid or weird) I don't even know where GTalk is. I can't find it in Titanium or Gemini App Manager, and its not in my apps thing or list or running processes. It is simply named GTalk right?
Thanks

[FAQ] CM10.1

WHEN POSTING IN THIS THREAD:
DO NOT SPAM
ONLY POST QUESTIONS YOU HAVE REGARDING ISSUES YOU DO NOT SEE IN THIS FAQ
"Q" and "A" SOLUTIONS THAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THIS THREAD
ISSUES WITH CURRENT SOLUTIONS IN THIS THREAD THAT DIDN'T SOLVE A PROBLEM
OR ANY QUESTIONS YOU HAVE REGARDING CM10.1 ITSELF! I HOPE TO FILL THIS THREAD UP WITH MANY MORE Q AND A SOLUTIONS TO HELP OTHER USERS AND DECREASE UNNECESSARY POSTS IN DEVELOPER SECTIONS! IF YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE: PLEASE FEEL FREE TO DO SO!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: I flashed CM10.1 but my GPS won't lock. Is there a solution?
A: Absolutely!
(Optional) Use TitaniumBackup to backup your apps+data
Use Recovery to Backup your current state (System, Data, Boot)
Flash a Sense ROM of any kind (I use MeanBean)
(Don't forget to do your wipes, of course)
*Once booted into a Sense ROM*
Make sure your GPS is turned ON and open up Google Maps
Wait for your GPS to lock
Reboot into Recovery and Restore your Backup
(Don't forget to do your wipes, of course)
*Once booted back onto your CM10.1*
Make sure GPS is turned ON and open up Google Maps
Your GPS should now lock.
Q: I noticed screen tearing (glitch-like symptoms) on my CM10.1. Is there a solution?
A: Absolutely!
Go into Developer Options
Scroll down to "Disable HW Overlays"
Check the box to disable
Screen tearing is now gone.
NOTE! You will need to do this on each reboot!
Q: Developer Options don't exist on my CM10.1. Is it hidden?
A: Kind of.
Go into About
Scroll all the way down and tap the build 7 times
You will notice a message saying Developer Options was unlocked.
Q: How do I get the Play Store on my CM10X?
A: You'll need to download a compatible GApps (Google Apps
You can find the latest GApps in this thread
Q: Why isn't my WiFi connecting?
A: That issue is usually caused by your router. Simply reset or unplug your router for 15 seconds and try again.
Q: I installed an AOSP kernel and my phone has been rebooting. Why is that?
A: The kernel may not be supported with your current ROM.
Some kernels have a voltage script provided by the builder. Ask the developer if there is one available.
You can also download Kernel Tuner from the Play Store to change voltage.
Q: Voltage? Kernel Tuner? What now...?
A: Within' Kernel Tuner you will want to go into Voltage and use the "All +12.5 mV" which will up the Voltage in all areas. I found that having 192MHz at 900mV will make CM10.1 plenty stable while not affecting battery life significantly. ROM and Kernel may very. Do some Trial and Error to see what is suitable for you
Q: My internal storage says I have less than I really should. Did I ruin my internal SD Card?
A: No. Don't panic.
All you need to do is Wipe your Internal Storage.
Backup your files if you don't want to lose them, of course.
Problem should be solved.
Issue usually occurs when flashing from Sense to AOSP or flashing numerous ROM's in a short period of time.
Q: Where can I find the latest Deck Builds?
A: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2110920
You can also check the iRC channel (info in the thread above)
Also, search Google for "CM10 EVO LTE irc" and click the first link
Q: Should I flash Nightly Builds or Deck's Builds?
A: Nightly Builds are official CM builds which don't include all of Deck's maintenance, tweaks, etc... You'll find that Deck's Builds just happen to be more stable.
I feel like this was a waste of time. Lol.

I've been using CM 10.1 ever since it first came out .I love it but the only problem i got is the terrible battery life I've been experiencing .It has gotten lot worst over time now my phone barely last a couple of hours per charge. Is there any advice you can give me to get better battery life?
ive done clean and dirty installs to find a solution but still get the same result and i've never use another kernel with the ROM. The best battery life i've experience with my phone was with stock rom when i used to get 24hrs on one charge .i'm seriously thinking about going back to stock but i love CM10.1

That is pretty weird. I had that problem on the EVO 3D before. Were you or are you using any custom kernel, kernel tuner, or scripts at all?
I know, too, that the battery does seem to drain a bit fast at first but then it gets more subtle. MeanBean has been draining me worse than CM10.1 right now.

MeanBean has never treated me well on battery life no matter what I do. Not on my replacement anyway. On my other LTEvo it was working great. But... CM10.1's battery life shouldn't be that bad. Could always use Kernel Tuner to manage the CPU and Gov. a bit. Trial and error until you find a satisfied combination. I generally use Ondemand as opposed the interactive. I noticed Ondemand gave me better battery life. Haven't done much with the CPU speeds in a while so I'm not going to be too much help there... How to disable shutter sound?
In older versions of CM there used to be an option in system settings to disable the shutter sound in the camera app. I can't seem to find any options either in the camera settings or in the system settings for this in CM10.1. Anyone know if this is there or not? Or is it coming in a future version?

I had some trouble with apps wakelocking (for lack of a better word) when I first installed CM10.1. You can identify some of those with the wakelock detector app.

Thanks for putting this post together. I have always used Sense but have been wanting to try a CM10.1 ROM. This information is very helpful.
A question that I have is what bugs or issues are currently associated with CM10.1? Most of the CM10.1 ROMs under Bug List say "Any bugs currently in latest CM10.1." Is there a centralized place that lists all of the issues? Thanks.

The only thing I noticed going wrong was my background will occasionally disappear (go black). Sometimes it will pulsate or strobe. Only happens when I sleep the phone while in Messages, and wake the phone. After unlocking, the background will either be black, be black for a while and all of the sudden pop my background image back up, or just act normal. I have no customizations or anything so I'm not sure why this occurs. Otherwise, the Vertical orientation option for the App Drawer is still messy as it always has been. That's all I've noticed but I haven't tested the music player yet .

Power Shutter? If so, that's in the Camera app settings. Click the bottom-right screen-button and choose the bottom-center settings screen-button. I also have apps that'll randomly open when I wake the phone but I figured that was just because of the phone being in my pocket, turning on, and going to the app. It will open to the clock.

Actually, not referring to Power-Shutter. I'm referring to the actual sound that is made when you take a photo. It's a bit jarring/annoying to have it "dleep!" when I take photos. Back in CM7 I remember that we could turn that sound off.

I looked everywhere and couldn't find an option. I really don't have the time to dig further into the actual coding either, unfortunately.

When I flashed CM 10.1 the only thing that worked was power button and volume. The screen was unresponsive, my bootloader is unlocked and I'm s-off hboot 2.09

And as you'll find stated numerous times: the latest touchpanel firmware isn't yet supported with most, if not all, AOSP ROM's. S-OFF, which will make you downgrade, and you'll be able to use your AOSP ROM's. And then you can update to the latest firmware minus the tp update.

Battery Drainage Problem

I have a pretty bad battery drainage problem. Multidp and 12_hsic wakelocks are prevalent. The most noticeable is the Phone app waking up the most.
Steps I've taken to combat the High battery drainage
Disabled Fast Dormancy
Greenified Facebook, Playstore, PlayBooks and Keep
All but contacts and chrome are checked under the autosync settings
Even tried apps like Juice Defender, but the battery drainage increased to a whole new level; deleted the app
Installed a custom kernel. Undervolted by -50mv
ROM: CrDroid
Kernel: Temasek Kernel
P.S Tried the BetterBatteryStats thread, but no one did help me there. :/ Hope I solve my problem here. Attached the idle dump.
Thanks in advance.

The Problem is The ROM , not the Phone.
Android 4.3 isn't optimized for S3 yet .
That causes Battery Drain Problems.
My Recommendation is that you search another 4.3 ROM or Downgrade to 4.2.2 or lower.
Previous post is wrong.
Your two first kernel wakelocks mean network use. Search for background sync apps, check Wi-Fi advanced settings and disable Google constant search.
Greenify all apps, except the vital ones for your usage. With paid app and xposed framework you can even freeze push message ones.
All this can be found in a couple of minutes with Google.
Some can achieve .2 %/hour in deep sleep with 4.3.
The Rom is not the culprit.
You wont get good battery life on IDLE on AOKP, AOSP or CM ROMs. No matter what you do. battery life is ok while the phone is awake but when it is in deepsleep still it consumes the battery on AOKP, AOSP or CM ROMs.

Yes i know AOSP,AOPK & CM don't have as good an idle drain as the touchwiz ROMs, but in my case we do know the reason. So it has to some other reason

Already had Google constant search disabled. And 4.3 is not xposed framework compatible. So can't use that.
And I have disabled background syncing except for chrome and contacts. It's the phone app waking up that's probably the culprit

I use xposed framework... It's compatible.
2.1.4 apk framework works well. Some people need to use SuperSu instead of super user, you can put it with a file explorer in system/app, then reboot and run, there is even a cwm zip somewhere to flash the framework directly.

Yes I know it's just 1.1% but you gotta see that this is just an idle drain. When I start using the phone on day to day basis, it doesn't even last the whole evening let alone the whole day. I'm down to 20% by mid afternoon when i unplug my phone at 8 A.M. .
Whereas when I was on stock, as the people above have said, my battery drain was around .4% and the phone used to last around a day and a half with moderate usage. Yes I know that I can never have that good a battery, but atleast I should be able to eliminate most of the wakelocks with this ROM. But the typical methods like disabling FD, greenifying apps etc etc don't seem to work.

I am on omega rom series 8.1.AOKP
My battery doesnt last a day anymore.
Phone is way faster than stock, but battery sucks.
Are there NO AOKP/CM/AOSP roms that have more stability and better juice at all?
No

Any Apps/modules/zips to save battery?

Hey,
When I had JB i intalled a modded build.prop from a user here, and I got extremely good results. Now I changed to CM11 with my Xperia Sola and I noticed how my battery wasn't as good as before... Is there any solution to improve my battery with Xposed modules, apps, or anything else? I know that you shouldn't be running apps in the background etc.

It's really hard to just make a blanket statement like, "Yea, this mod/tweak/app/etc will definitely help you get battery life." If it were, then so many people wouldn't be on here looking for solutions. No 2 phones are gonna get the same kind of battery life for a ton of different reasons. Sometimes it's the kernel, sometimes it's apps that sync too much, sometimes location services get out of hand, sometimes the radio version doesn't mix well with the update you are on or the area you are in, maybe some 3rd party apps don't play nice with others, and so on and so forth. Best thing to do is run some apps that might help pinpoint what is keeping the phone awake (wakelocks). Better Battery Stats http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 , Wakelock Detector http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2179651 , GSAM Battery Monitor https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm&hl=en or something along those lines. Once you figure out what is causing it, then you can start to look for solutions. Good luck!
