We should be able to make a list of the notorious apps that we've experienced that cause battery drain. No, not some 3d launcher, not some game you play too much, but apps that when installed kill your battery without good cause..
This is an opinion thread, if you see the same app repeatedly than maybe that opinion should matter, and feel free to give your insight.. but no "you're an idiot, because blah blah"
I've used poweramp music player for nearly a year, I've emailed the dev because it will kill my battery at huge rates, but they claimed that it isn't the app. Even though there are tons of posts about the same thing(many about my phone the Samsung galaxy s).. I'm sure it does, but I love the functionality it has and can't give it up. Which is fine.
But I suddenly have battery drain really bad and tthe only change I made was switching to go launcher. Maybe it is the Widgets, but I have lost several hours a day of battery only after using it.
Either way, since I couldn't find a thread about apps people think cause needless battery drain I figured I'd post one. I bet there are a ton of apps people will hate on, but maybe qe can save someone from finding out the hard way, or maybe a developer will see their app listed and think they should work on it..
Regardless, what apps have you installed and noticed needless battery drain?

This thread is going to be full of complete nonsense.. There are badly written apps that are going to do stupid stuff, but there are also apps which have custom codecs which use more power to decode certain file formats (PowerAmp) and apps which by design are going to use power (Wifi Scanners).

The exact kind of comment that doesn't contribute. No, it may list some apps that cause NEEDLESS battery drain. According to the dev of poweramp it doesn't process the muscle any differently, and shouldn't drain more than the stock app. There's no custom codecs to read mp3s.
I wont waste anymore time on someone who isn't contributing, only trolling.

You clearly don't get that PowerAmp doesn't use the same codecs as most media players.. It has custom ffmpeg libs. The author can say they should be similar in cpu but doesn't mean they are.
And I agree that it does use more cpu.. Mostly notice it when I listen to music while sleeping, the phone gets much warmer than if I'm using stock codecs.
And watch your use of the word troll...

+1 for the yahoo mail app.
I am using Go Launcher Ex, Launcher Pro + and ADW Launcher and cannot say that one consumes more battery than the other, it depends more on what widgets or live WP you use in the launcher, so i think we should focus on pinpointing what widgets and in what settings or conditions drain the battery, for example i found that Animated Weather was for me draining to much juice and replaced it by BeWeather, for the same reason i replaced Executive Widgets by Pure Widget.
On the other hand i removed K9 Mail and am using MailDroid, as in several occasions K9 climbed to the top of the list in battery usage, doubling even the screen usage.
At this point i never more experienced excessive battery drain, other than screen and phone cell standby (due to bad reception in my area).

Let me guess, you were using POP...
Actually I might as well complain about a widget I installed, but I uninstalled it a month ago and haven't been able to figure out exactly which one it is in the market... Doh.. I installed it and it literally woke the phone and my tablet up ONCE A MINUTE to update. Deep sleep was gone, battery life about 30% lower than expected. So beware of widgets that update often

Yes you are right i am using pop.
You point is also correct, there are widgets which wont let deep sleep the phone. A method to pinpoint them is to look at the logcat and see which app is waking up the phone constantly.
tunein radio pro and sensor
I had a problem with tunein radio pro. Even after I shut it down though (App Management), under battery use, tunein radio was listed as draining battery continuously under sensor usage.
No idea if it is a sensor issue or the app issue.

Ok guys I finally got around to rooting and freezing some apps last night on my X2. However, now I'm having texting problems. They seem to go out fine but they rarely come in. Also, I sometimes get a FC error saying the application Text Messaging ( process com.motorola.conversations has stopped unexpectedly.
Also, when texts do come in about 75% of the time I get two of the same text. This may be a chompsms thing since it was doing this before I rooted.
The list I used can found by googling "X2 freeze app list" and it's on androidcentral. (i can't post links, sorry)
Can you guys help sort this out? Thanks!
I've looked at the list and its sound. None of those apps should have caused the issue you are experiencing. You mentioned a 3rd party messaging app? Do you still have the stock messaging app?
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Yes I sure do. I haven't removed anything, I've only frozen apps. I went halfway through the list and just froze a few at a time but stillgot the random FC's. I'm not sure what to do now..
I would unfreeze everything and see if you still get fcs. If you do it might be your third party app. If not then freeze just Verizon apps and freeze the rest one at a time, that way you can discover the problem by process of elimination. I personally think the third party app is causing the problem but hey I could be wrong.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
If I don't freeze anything then I don't get any fc's or problems to speak of. But that kind of defeats the purpose of buying Titanium Pro and the phone is much quicker when I had a bunch of the bloat frozen. I'll spend some more time freezing apps slowly but the problem is that the fc's don't happen happen every time even with the same list of frozen apps so that makes narrowing it down very difficult. If you have any great ideas in the meantime let me know, thanks!
Sure thing I will keep it in mind

Cardock2.apk (do not freeze if you use a car dock)
DeviceStatistics.apk (polls various systems and stores statistical data)
Dock.apk*

Slackerradio.apk
SpellingCheckService.apk (I'm a good speller and hate this crap)
SuggestionsProvider.apk
SuggestionsRuleCheckerCore.apk
SuggestionsServiceScheduler.apk
-- Freezing these will alleviate a lot of the lag experienced with the stock ROM; adding build.prop optimizations will complement this
ToggleWidgets.apk

VcastMusic.apk
VcastVideo.apk
vnav_DROIDX2... (VZ Navigator)
Vsuiteapp.apk
VVM.apk
VZWIM.apk
VZWInstaller.apk
WeatherWidget.apk
You can freeze the datacollection APKs, but just know that you won't have any battery statistics and some data push features won't work either. If you freeze datacollection without freezing the 3 Suggestions APKs, you'll get a force close on the RuleChecker at startup.
I kept the social stuff mainly because the stock ROM doesn't integrate the Facebook app like stock Android, so in order to have your Facebook contacts sync'd with your phone contacts, you need the blur_facebook.apk authenticator, and to keep the status updates intact when receiving a phone call from a contact with Facebook data, you need some of the social apps (mainly friendfeed.apk). I disable the social messaging notifications from the Messaging app in the launcher, as the official Facebook app provides notifications, and I don't need two.
If you don't care about that stuff, just remember that the stock ROM expects many of the authenticators to be there, mainly Facebook since stock Android also links with Facebook. You may get force closes when trying to open or edit a contact, or when text messaging contacts.
Here are the APKs that will cause FCs in the contacts area (opening or editing a contact):
blur_activesync.apk
blur_email.apk
blur_facebook.apk
blur_yahoo.apk
I kept blur_picasa and blur_youtube as I wanted these sync'd in my gallery.
blur_xxx are authenticators (used in the Accounts page)
Blurxxx are actual programs
Sorry about the length, but some things need to be explained so everyone can understand these things.
Thanks for the very long and detailed post Jason. I'm also trying to get my extended battery calibrated but the Battery Calibrator app doesn't seem to be working.
I will definitely get to work on that app list but with just those few that I had listed I wasn't able to get into my contacts without a fc. I don't see how everyone else is doing all these things so easily but I'm struggling. Is it possible to have a bad root or something?
I didn't read all of Jason's post, so forgive me if I repeat something, but I use Chomp and have run into something like this, but only if I freeze the default messaging application. If I freeze it, I can send text from Chomp, but not receive them. Unfrozen, I can send and receive fine. As much as I'd enjoy freezing the default app, I've just disabled the notifications from it and hidden it from view. I know I was able to freeze it without issue when I first got the phone (back on FroYo), but, since updating to GB, it causes issues.
I've seen problems when my mother sends me a text where it doubles the text, we are both in VZW and the text itself is doubled on her end, so could it be VZW?

did u happen to freeze email engine or authentication?
That will mess up texts
I can't remember now for sure but I think I froze Corporate Sync Authenticator. Would that affect texts? Our phone will NEVER read an extended battery correctly
no matter how many times u "calibrate" it.
You gonna want to use a battery widget and keep an eye on the voltage left.
I believe around 3700 is pretty much dead and u should recharge.
Corporate email may have had something to do with that text issue.
It sounds more likely that it is the third.party message app giving u issues.
I know when I used go sms and I froze stock message app I entered the APN and SMSC #'s or something like that manually ((I forget exactly what I entered...but I had found what needed to be entered by digging around in root explorer somewhere)) for it to pull messages and send correctly....
good luck...
If I have time later ill browse around and see if I can locate what I did before...

Yeah I have had mine go lower than 3700
I meant that when it starts to go under 3700 it seems to drop faster also
so its a good idea to charge up when u get under 3700 since its a BAD idea to let a Li-on battery drain completely....they work better and last longer if u start charging when it gets to around 15%...
Thanks for clarification motcher
Thanks for the input guys. Unfortunately I just can't seem to freeze anything without getting force closes. So I guess my root was all for not :/ boo.

When i first got my X2 I had a problem with sending double texts and not being able to open a thread once it had 100+ mesages in it. I would have to delete the thread for it to be corrected. I rooted the phone and tried freezing and unfreezing a bunch of apps and it still gave me problems. Both when i was stock with very few apps and rooted. But when i flashed minimal x it seemed to quit. Ive been running Eclipse and now CM7 and havent had anymore issues. Btw the problem with the text wasnt just one phone. This is my second X2 and both had it till I put a rom on it. Im sure there was something simple I missed but I still dont know what.

Hi guys. I picked up a Sony Xperia SX (It comes with Android 4.0.4) a week ago and have been happy with it except for the battery life; it's not quite as good as my old Nexus One.
I've been looking at the battery usage stats and things seem ok except for "Android System." This collection of tasks takes up a LOT of battery and I have no idea why. Does anyone know?
I've turned off all my Google Account syncing and removed some of the pre-installed bloatware (for example, McAfee AntiVirus, but for some reason this still appears under Android System - does that mean it's not uninstalled? If so, is there some way to get into the system and actually remove this process?). The screenshots below are for a full days worth of very light usage: a few text messages, browsed one web page for a few minutes, and a very short phone call.
Are there any apps I can install that track battery/CPU/activity usage per process so I can zero in on what is keeping the device awake so much?
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

Q: I flashed CM10.1 but my GPS won't lock. Is there a solution?
A: Absolutely!
(Optional) Use TitaniumBackup to backup your apps+data
Use Recovery to Backup your current state (System, Data, Boot)
Flash a Sense ROM of any kind (I use MeanBean)
(Don't forget to do your wipes, of course)
*Once booted into a Sense ROM*
Make sure your GPS is turned ON and open up Google Maps
Wait for your GPS to lock
Reboot into Recovery and Restore your Backup
(Don't forget to do your wipes, of course)
*Once booted back onto your CM10.1*
Make sure GPS is turned ON and open up Google Maps
Your GPS should now lock.
Q: I noticed screen tearing (glitch-like symptoms) on my CM10.1. Is there a solution?
A: Absolutely!
Go into Developer Options
Scroll down to "Disable HW Overlays"
Check the box to disable
Screen tearing is now gone.
NOTE! You will need to do this on each reboot!
Q: Developer Options don't exist on my CM10.1. Is it hidden?
A: Kind of.
Go into About
Scroll all the way down and tap the build 7 times
You will notice a message saying Developer Options was unlocked.
Q: How do I get the Play Store on my CM10X?
A: You'll need to download a compatible GApps (Google Apps
You can find the latest GApps in this thread
Q: Why isn't my WiFi connecting?
A: That issue is usually caused by your router. Simply reset or unplug your router for 15 seconds and try again.
Q: I installed an AOSP kernel and my phone has been rebooting. Why is that?
A: The kernel may not be supported with your current ROM.
Some kernels have a voltage script provided by the builder. Ask the developer if there is one available.
You can also download Kernel Tuner from the Play Store to change voltage.
Q: Voltage? Kernel Tuner? What now...?
A: Within' Kernel Tuner you will want to go into Voltage and use the "All +12.5 mV" which will up the Voltage in all areas. I found that having 192MHz at 900mV will make CM10.1 plenty stable while not affecting battery life significantly. ROM and Kernel may very. Do some Trial and Error to see what is suitable for you
Q: My internal storage says I have less than I really should. Did I ruin my internal SD Card?
A: No. Don't panic.
All you need to do is Wipe your Internal Storage.
Backup your files if you don't want to lose them, of course.
Problem should be solved.
Issue usually occurs when flashing from Sense to AOSP or flashing numerous ROM's in a short period of time.
Q: Where can I find the latest Deck Builds?
A: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2110920
You can also check the iRC channel (info in the thread above)
Also, search Google for "CM10 EVO LTE irc" and click the first link
Q: Should I flash Nightly Builds or Deck's Builds?
A: Nightly Builds are official CM builds which don't include all of Deck's maintenance, tweaks, etc... You'll find that Deck's Builds just happen to be more stable.
I feel like this was a waste of time. Lol.

That is pretty weird. I had that problem on the EVO 3D before. Were you or are you using any custom kernel, kernel tuner, or scripts at all?
I know, too, that the battery does seem to drain a bit fast at first but then it gets more subtle. MeanBean has been draining me worse than CM10.1 right now.

MeanBean has never treated me well on battery life no matter what I do. Not on my replacement anyway. On my other LTEvo it was working great. But... CM10.1's battery life shouldn't be that bad. Could always use Kernel Tuner to manage the CPU and Gov. a bit. Trial and error until you find a satisfied combination. I generally use Ondemand as opposed the interactive. I noticed Ondemand gave me better battery life. Haven't done much with the CPU speeds in a while so I'm not going to be too much help there... I also use System Panel to monitor apps, system, memory, and use its built-in task killer.

How to disable shutter sound?
In older versions of CM there used to be an option in system settings to disable the shutter sound in the camera app. I can't seem to find any options either in the camera settings or in the system settings for this in CM10.1. Anyone know if this is there or not? Or is it coming in a future version?

Thanks for putting this post together. I have always used Sense but have been wanting to try a CM10.1 ROM. This information is very helpful.
A question that I have is what bugs or issues are currently associated with CM10.1? Most of the CM10.1 ROMs under Bug List say "Any bugs currently in latest CM10.1." Is there a centralized place that lists all of the issues? Thanks.

The only thing I noticed going wrong was my background will occasionally disappear (go black). Sometimes it will pulsate or strobe. Only happens when I sleep the phone while in Messages, and wake the phone. After unlocking, the background will either be black, be black for a while and all of the sudden pop my background image back up, or just act normal. I have no customizations or anything so I'm not sure why this occurs. Otherwise, the Vertical orientation option for the App Drawer is still messy as it always has been. That's all I've noticed but I haven't tested the music player yet .

In older versions of CM there used to be an option in system settings to disable the shutter sound in the camera app. I can't seem to find any options either in the camera settings or in the system settings for this in CM10.1. Anyone know if this is there or not? Or is it coming in a future version?

I had some trouble with apps wakelocking (for lack of a better word) when I first installed CM10.1. You can identify some of those with the wakelock detector app.

Power Shutter? If so, that's in the Camera app settings. Click the bottom-right screen-button and choose the bottom-center settings screen-button. I also have apps that'll randomly open when I wake the phone but I figured that was just because of the phone being in my pocket, turning on, and going to the app. It will open to the clock.

Actually, not referring to Power-Shutter. I'm referring to the actual sound that is made when you take a photo. It's a bit jarring/annoying to have it "dleep!" when I take photos. Back in CM7 I remember that we could turn that sound off.

I looked everywhere and couldn't find an option. I really don't have the time to dig further into the actual coding either, unfortunately.

And as you'll find stated numerous times: the latest touchpanel firmware isn't yet supported with most, if not all, AOSP ROM's. S-OFF, which will make you downgrade, and you'll be able to use your AOSP ROM's. And then you can update to the latest firmware minus the tp update.

HI, I had this problem in my Galaxy Note 10.1 .
My girlfriend's Galaxy S3 also started to eat up battery after 4 months.
for both of them, I got the charger and data cable replaced by the samsung service center.
The problem got solved.
So, may be this can be your case too.
The thing is, for charging a battery to it's full capacity, the charger need to supply appropriate current and appropriate voltage. Now with the malfunctioning of the charger (source) or the data cable (path) can lead to unhealthy charging of the battery.
Now, According to my logic, (I am not sure if it's true) the phone reads the voltage and tells you the percentage of the remaining battery. But actually battery does not have much current to make the voltage stand still. That is because, when the phone will not recieve appropriate current according to the system's resistance, It will definitely eat up more voltage, and the battery will drain quickly.
I hope this helps you
This is my first solution posted on XDA, I dont know if you see a thanks button, but If you do, and this helps you, Please hit the thanks button
Thanks
Aosp are known for draining s3 battery, especially cm.
It is a simple suggestion, but on MY ACCOUNT foxhound 0.1 based on 4.2.2 is one of the least battery draining samsung based roms if not the least. It is certainly stable, you can theme it with xposed and change launcher if you don't like touchwiz....

And a free alternative to better battery stats is wakelock detector.
Remember if you choose any 4.2.2 samsung based rom not to change kernel, default is good enough anyway...

Hi I really appreciate your feedback, but I am not so clued up on how exposed works or how to theme, Ive tried to, butIi couldnt really grasp the concept..:silly:
Technical-ish definition: it is a framework, so it wraps around android system at startup and patches the ui packages required for it to apply mods.
User definition: a package you can install to mod your phone, mostly for themes. First you install it, then you install modules, which are more packages that come with options. They basically use the xposed framework to be able to mod/theme your phone. So.
install xposed ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401install apk and open app. From there you can EASILY install the framework with a button).
Install any module (they come as apks).
Activate module within xposed and use module to tweak settings (usually they come with their own app, or you can just go to modules in xppsed and press the name).
When you restart the phone will apply changes
pretty easy, all the developing is back end.
If your phone crashes at startup there is a package ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1619566&d=1361912360 ) you can flash through recovery to simply disable xposed at startup no problem so you can then go back to xposed app and disable modules not compatible with your rom that made your phone crash. Some nice modules (you can find installation apks either on xda or inside xposed download menu):
Nottach xposed ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285074 )
wanam xposed (app store or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2383484 )
Xblast tools ( http://repo.xposed.info/module/ind.fem.black.xposed.mods )
Gravity box (download section in xposed or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2316070 )
Maybe you can find some more of these in download section within xposed app, also look there.
There are also many other packages for tweaking backgrounds or just the status bar and many specifuc things....
And there is much more. Remember these modules may make the phone crash if applied together (there is a check-box activation menu in xposed managing , so you can have more installed at the same time but not activated) so it's probably best not to activate the most similar ones at the same time.
Also you can find somewhere in xda a thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327541) which rounds up all xposed available modules. Or the website which is a bit more difficult to navigate, i'd use xda.thread.but you can also find modules here ( http://repo.xposed.info/module-overview ).
xposed may look complicated, but couldn't be simpler!

Try using better "wifi on off" application from play store. Looks like your wifi is using lot of battery juice.
Also try Googy kernel.

Its seems like when my mobile data is on, my battery is getting drained, my battery was almost drained at like 12, but lasted me the rest of the day when i switched off my data
it could be because Bittorrent sync wasn't disabled in data, but ill only know for sure tomorrow..
Here are my battery stats for today
I have been struggling with very high battery drain rate myself for long while. I even bought the fat and heavy 3000mha battery pack - samsung's official, to combat it and it still did not feel right.
Always HIGHEST battery draining cause if I let the phone idle a lot, is Android system, that's weird.
Finall I caved and tried better battery stats and just immediately looking at the core stuff in "android system" or so, seems it is Wifi wakelocking the phone.
Wait what, why is Wifi doing that?
Anyway, pretty much disabling wifi remedies that... THough I would prefer to use Wifi myself.
Whatever it is, and seeing it crosses over roms, even official though there it is least felt - It has something to do with samsung's wifi driver updates or something. I may be just silly for thinking maybe 9.0 that mine shipped with was so much better in that regard.
My hope is lost of samsung actually fixing this, all they seem to so is make it worse gradyally and increasingly.
TL;DR: Wifi is a bish.
Same issue.
I bought the i9300 a couples a day brand new. but i did replace the stock rom with others. and even it`s still a bit rubish, even in RAM. 10h of normal use and my battery is gone... and my RAM is only ~100mb free.

Did you turn mobile data off?
It looks like youve had over 4 hours no data.
Plus, lots of network related wakelocks multipdp... Shame we cant see what the deleted wakelocks are... l2_hisc is high too.
"deleted_wake_locks" (): 4 h 18 m 41 s (15521 s) Cntc/wc/ec)721540/0/9118 42,6%
"multipdp" (): 2 h 52 m 29 s (10349 s) Cntc/wc/ec)4071/0/4070 28,4%
"l2_hsic" (): 2 h 30 m 31 s (9031 s) Cntc/wc/ec)17053/3130/17052 24,8%
Yeah..I turned my mobile data off because after lunch my battery was at 20% and it lasted till I got back home at around 6..any suggestions? Anything else I could provide that would make it easier to diagnose the issue?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
You need to try and "catch" whatever those deleted wakelocks are... You're going to have to manually keep an eye on BBS.
Personally, I would just factory reset teh device and start fresh.
Yeah..I'm going to do that now..hopefully that will sort the issue out..Will let you know the outcome..Thank You I really do appreciate your time

Also remember to use samsung's battery reserve option (i don't know the italian translation for english, it's that icon accessible from samsungs.notification that usually has the recycling or battery icon), because even though a phone can already be draining little battery (which is my case), that option can have a 50% improvement. Which is of course excellent if you can't charge your phone during the afternoon.
