I'm an idiot.... And now I'm stuck! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I decided to install the cyanogenMod 10.1 (Android 4.2.2) to my Galaxy S3, I downloaded RomManager, did all the steps asked and it worked fine.
Then I wanted to install the Google Apps, but stupidly, I downloaded the wrong ones (even after double checking!!!!) So I downloaded google apps for 4.3 not 4.2.2; I was like "DOH" when I noticed on the Rom Manager installation process it said "4.3"
So the phone turned back on and now it constantly says "Android Keyboard stopped", I tried to load the Rom Manager application but that won't load now either! "Unfortunately, ROM Manager has stopped." is the message I get.
Is there a way I can download my cyanogenMod 10.1 ROM via ODIN? so I can get rid of the google apps that are causing me these problems; if so how do I do it (I've tried looking for the last hour, but can't find any info on it, every link says to go through the ROM Manager, but I can't get mine to run.
Thanks in advance.

Read the basics wipe phone through recovery and flash again

Reboot into recovery. Wipe and flash again. Don't flash gapps yet. Boot up and download the correct gapps then flash it.
Make a nandtoid backup so this won't happen again.

First of all, dont worry about android
When I meet android 2 years ago,I didnt have an idea about rom, root etc
Anyway,just go recovery,wipe data

I wouldn't waste my time using rom manager either.....

Clockworkmod recovery

I wanna use the download feature on the rom manager app, but whenever I select "download rom" from within the rom maager app, it says I must install the cwm recovery. The thing is, I'm already using it, I guess the app just doesn't recognize that. Is it safe for me to continue and install the recovery (considering I'm already running it) or should I not, and forget about the app and the download feature altogether?

I'm pretty sure you still have to flash clockworkmod recovery from within RM first before you use it to flash ROMs. But.. I don't think any ROMs are available in ROM Manager other than CM7

Not true at all. In fact some Devs are recommending RM as an easier way to install their ROM.

Which devs? Not the ones on the SGS2 forums here. I believe every single one of them has advised AGAINST using Rom Manager to install anything. Use CWM recovery directly on the phone. Many people have reported problems trying to use RM. And since you are having a problem with it yourself....
Only very recently over the past day or so has ROM Manager become usable. CM7 is one of the ones that the dev is recommending to use it but up until just recently, it's been highly suggested to avoid using it at all costs.
I believe you can -download- roms off of RomManager. However, installing CWM from RomManager is not recommended, because it will cause an invalid signature error. Still flash CWM using the kernel found in the dev section.

- First time flashing CM 7 to your Galaxy S2 (or coming from another ROM)?
Make sure you're running a rooted device.
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693)
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition) - do it for real.
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon (through ROMManager is easiest)
- Upgrading from earlier CM7?
ROM Manager method:
Install ROMManager Premium.
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Pick Samsung AT&T Galaxy S2.
Choose Download ROMs.
Pick the CyanogenMod Nightlies.
Check the Google Apps addon.
Check Backup current ROM!
Check wipe cache, dalvik cache.
Let ROMManager finish the installation.
Q: How do I go back to a Samsung stock ROM?
A: Just use ClockworkMod or ROM Manager backup/restore facility to go back and forth between stock (or any other ROM) and CM7.
Q: Can I use ROM Manager to install or back up this ROM?
A: Yes.

Phonic, not sure who your refering to when ypu say "every single dev".. there are only a couple.for SGSII- designgears for Cog and Atin for CM, and he already recommended RM so that leaves designgears as "every single dev" and I never said I was having an problem. I also mentioned in my post that CM7 was the only ROM that was available in RM for SGSII. As far as the other comment saying RM shouldn't be used for Galaxy s I guess I dont understand why. I've used it a lot before for CM7 and MiUi.. and now there are more ROMs available (SGSI)
Guys I wouldn't have posted this unless I knew for sure ROM Manager worked and has been used and also mentioned as a method to flashing. Its not fair to the developer for users to go around saying something doesn't work or is highly advised against using when that's not the case at all.
..just saying

I agree with what he said. I used rom manager to flash cwm after rooting and messed up my cwm. I had to reinstall stock rom and root again to fix it. since then I've read the development section not to use the rom manager.

Right now it looks like the best way to get CWM on your phone is by flashing a kernel with it. Check the Development section. Should be near the top!

Help Galaxy S2 won't boot after updating to CM9 R2

Hi I have a Samsung Galaxy S2. Android v4.0.4 LQ7
I am a noob so sorry if my question is stupid.
I have rooted using method 1 in that thread and it worked great.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
Then I downloaded the app ROM Manager and downloaded CM9 RC2 since it appeared to be a stable.
I used ROM manager to download the file cm-9.0.0-RC2-galaxys2.zip
Once downloaded I saved that file in the external SD Card and used ROM Manager to reboot in recovery mode and install the ROM.
The installation progress fine and complete. I then reboot my phone.
When rebooting the phone displays the Samsung galaxy S2 screen and then switched to Cyanogen (mod) 9 screen. From there nothing happens. The phone won't boot. I tried to removed the battery which is the only way to turn the phone off and reboot in recovery and reinstall the file but the same thing happens.
Please help!
You've probably installed wrong zip for your device/variation.
Specifically which GS2 have you got?
Did you wipe date/factory reset?
Try wiping before and after flashing?
Get the CM9 nightly and flash that instead or try flashing Siyah kernel over the one that is on your device now. I personally use Goo Manager from market as you can download/update/notifications and browse compatible roms via that.

If you do a wipe/reset it will clean all your installed apps/app data and restore settings to clean install.
Its advisable to do this whenever you are flashing a different rom. Its easy to backup and then restore all your apps automatically and silently (without intervention) in a few clicks after installing new rom with titanium backup (pro).
Reboot into recovery
Wipe data/factory reset
Install CM9 Nightly from internal or external card.
Install latest CM9 gapps
Reboot system.

Thanks. for that. Do you guys know of a shortcut button to turn the mobile data on or off, like the power button does on ICS?
Also I would like to raise an issue with the ROM Manager App. I cannot do a backup of my current ROM. Every time I try to do so the App freezes. It did the same when I first rooted my phone and I was on the Stock ROM I was unable to do a backup then.
Is this something that happen often with Rom manager?
Thanks

Don't use ROM Manager, due to its incompatibility with most kernels and the S2.
Here's what to do about the short cut for mobile data:
Options –> System –> Notification Drawer –> Widget Buttons –> Toggle Mobile Data
It'll be there at the top when you pull down the drawer, if it's not immediately visible just slide the icons to the side and you'll see it.

You always do backups in recovery mode, Rom Manager (if compatible kernel) simply automates teh process of rebooting into recovery and starting backup.
Depending on your rom/version you can do this via power menu anyway (reboot into recovery).
STOP USING ROM MANAGER!
It can & most likely will fuc& your fone up. If u want to learn I suggest u read all of chainfires posts, then check out the SGSII Bible in the GS2 section. Then get urself the correct tar file for the Cf root kernel specific to ur country or region. That will get u outta the ****e if this ever happens again. Read up on all things root etc. u could do with learning what Odin is too!

Thanks for that. I think I know what Odin is. Thank you so much for that post. You have opened a whole new world! I have opened the SG2 bible I wish I have done that before. I am about to do a back up now. but I have not been able to do a back up of my original stock ROM since I was trying to do it with ROM Manager and it would freeze all the time. I think it is the worse that I could have done I have changed my ROM and didn't not do a back up before. i guess I will never be able to revert back to my stock ROM. Thanks again for you precious advises they have been very helpful!
Naa m8, u can always go back to a stock, u just need to tell me your country & the modem & ROM version, mine was stock Uk 4.0.3 & once you have that you can flash it with Odin then flash the Cf root kernel. you would then be on a totally stock ICS ROM but with root & CWM recovery so you can then flash anything you like. If you give me the country & which ROM (ICS or GB) you would like I can give you the necessary files for Odin.
Do not, I repeat DO NOT flash a stock ROM & stock unrooted kernel as if u do a full wipe it will hardbrick ur fone!
Sent from My Omega powered beast, using Xparent ICS
There's an even easier way....
Go here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1608071
then simply download the stock unbranded firmware for your country. it doesn't have to be your specific country but it helps as it has the csc etc that you need. Once you have downloaded it simply flash it with Odin & you will be running stock ICS 4.0.3 but with root so you can then flash CM9, but seriously I would highly recommended Omega v15. It's close to stock but sooooo much more. Im in all day if u need help

In that case you will need to flash an appropriate modem file for your device or possibly check APN details.
You can get modem via dev section (use search) and APN settings from your carrier or google.

Thanks for your work OP.
Thanks a lot, giving this a go right now.
Loaded this without any problems. I've got 4.1.2 and build jz054k. I did have one issue of my own doing. The first time I loaded it I did not wipe data and on reboot I was stuck on the "android" screen. After about 10 minutes I did a complete wipe and then loaded it again and it booted right up.
Not sure if this was an improvement in the build but gps locked on immediately as soon as I loaded up google maps. I don't remember it being that fast before. I mean, it was fast before but it might have taken 5 seconds or so to get a lock. And landscape mode is pretty cool.
Thanks for this.

Maybe i am confused, but why did you put this rom in the original section?
So, I ran into a problem. And now I can't get my Nexus 7 to load past the black and whit Google screen when you first power it on.
I was running the stock out of the box 4.1.1 JB that was rooted. I updated my ROM Manager and did a backup, then rebooted, and wiped the Davlik Cache and flashed. After about 30 seconds into the flash ROM Manager received and error and wanted to know if i wanted to reboot. So I did and now i'm stuck. Any suggestions or how i can get it into the correct recovery?
I can get to fast boot, (power and down volume) but when I choose Boot recovery or any option other than power off I just get back to the White Google on black background.
Fixing the Google Now crashing problem too and will have updated ROM with the latest binaries up in a couple of hours.
Updated ROM has been posted.
GApps are no longer included and can be downloaded from first post.

Just thought instead of saying wrong forum over and over again. Might be alot more better to answer the question instead.
You flashed the wrong gapps on your phone. I know gapps are likely generic packages of the google apps but some ROMs are not compatible with certain gapps and not sure about the recovery it could have been overwritten when you flashed the gapps. Just reflash your twrp recovery back and always be careful of what you flash. This might be similar to the issue on the HTC One X forum where some people flash a S4 ROM into the tegra device leading to their baseband, hboot, etc. being erased or overwritten by wrong images.

[Q] Need to restore P7510 to factory after custom rom

I was experimenting with custom roms (mistake on my part) and got my Galaxy Tab to a version of JellyBean (CM 10.1) that is stable. However, in my noobliness, I didn't realize I couldn't get apps from the app store (makes more sense in hindsight). I also didn't realize that I can't revert easily.
If I connect the device to my computer, it says that Windows doesn't recognize it, and doesn't even acknowledge it in any other way. I tried running Kies, but could only ever get it to go through with the firmware upgrade while in download mode (again, not sure if this is what it was asking for) and even then I'd get an error with a bunch of random boxes for the description. I can get a screenshot of that if necessary.
EDIT: After a long time of inactivity, Kies informs me that the device is not responding.
Apologies if I'm missing something completely obvious, but this is really frustrating, so any help would be appreciated.
you download gapps for android version ???
that gives you Google play etc, I take its saying that on Google play its saying "this app is not compatible with your device "? ... try going to manage applications and clearing the data for Google play.

that gives you Google play etc, I take its saying that on Google play its saying "this app is not compatible with your device "? ... try going to manage applications and clearing the data for Google play.
tip always make a nandroid backup using the custom recovery before installing a new ROM

I couldn't install gapps because it denies me access to the tablet on my computer. At this point I just want to reinstall ICS and live with it.

download the ICS bootloader flash that with Odin
then let's download a stock image for ICS

I can't access the files because windows wont recognize it anymore. How am I supposed to put the file on? (Assume I don't have an SD card and don't want one if I can avoid it)
I tried reinstalling Samsung drivers to no avail. However, Odin recognizes it and I was able to load the bootloader.
EDIT: Forgot I can flash roms with Odin. New rom installed, booted with Samsung logo, so far so good
