As per the title, device manager doesn't change when I plug the phone in, tried two different computers and two different cables, flashed the stock firmware back, and still nothing.
It charges when I plug it in and SOMETIMES brings up the MTP-Initialization logo thing, but never gets any further.
Is my GS2 goosed yet again?
Edit: Tried on my PS3 as well and still charges, but won't ask to mount the SD card or anything, so I'm back to my trusty HTC HD2, wondering whether I should sell the GS2 once it's repaired and get a Galaxy Nexus...
Hah, another HD2 veteran, it's like everyone from the HD2 forum is now here... even the devs. Anyway, may be a stupid question, but are you always trying with the same USB cable?

Tried two different cables as stated in my OP, and it doesn't matter whether USB Debugging is on or off. I'm taking it back to the service centre after work today, and I'm probably going to sell it after.
I've had the camera go.
I've had it not vibrating at all.
I've had problems with spots on the camera lens.
I think I'm going to put some money to the sale of it, and get a Galaxy Nexus, hopefully the built quality will be at least a little better...

Following are my observations and possible steps to
1. When the phone is upgraded to Android 2.3.4 and above (mine is 2.3.6) Kies stops recognizing the phones and USB connection / Serial port connections etc get reset on the phone
2. Even if proper drivers are there on the laptop (mine is Windows 7 64bit) they are not recognized
3. Device Manager shows "unknown device"
4. Updating the driver also does not result in any help
5. solution lies in the phone
a. key in the dialer *#7284#
b. it has 4 option there..
UART (MODEM/PDA)
USB (MODEM/PDA)
c. For USB. select the PDA.if it already selected to PDA. reselect it by select MODEM and then PDA again.. Only change the USB setting.. andthen press back. try reconnect (thanks to napi1 @ androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/447145-sgs2-kies-not-syncing-os-2-3-5-a.html#post3484588)
6. The Laptop will start recognizing the required drivers and install them
also
Phone is not recognized by laptop when it is in USB debug mode, MyPhoneExplorer does not recognize when it is not in Debug mode

Doing a factory reset after backing up data will solve the problems.
Still Hasn't worked for me. I'm getting no USB function other than Charge. Its working as if the USB isn't plugged in at all.
Is there anyway of reinstalling the MTP application on the phone? When i find it through App manager its showing with no size and no options inside (clear data or clear cache)
Kies isn't working as far as the phone is concerned there is no USB connection at all.
I know ICS is coming within a few days for GS2 owners, will this clear the problem???
So frustrating.

same with mine. mine still doesnt work with the dialer *#7284# and with debugging off or on. ive unistalled and reinstalled the driver serveral times and nothing and this has happened to me on my hero and my sgs2 dozens of times, its so annoying =[. at one point i manged to get all but the usb storage drivers installed. what else can i do ???

Same problem here, tried everything (to my knowledge). Someone told me it had to do with the battery overheating because I had use the charger from another phone. For about 2 days my phone would go on vibrate randomly and started the connection process (like a usb cable was connected). It could do that non stop for a few hours. Now that Im back to my original charger, it stoped, but still can't connect to my pc.
I tried on 3 diff PCs with diff version of windows...
I've tried everythin, debug mode on/off, reinstalled Kies, drivers, did factory reset, but nothing.. when i try to connect my SGSII to Kies, it writes "Current connection mode not supported by Kies".. I'm on Lite'ning rom v2.2..
If you're running a custom rom, why would you want to use Kies ? It's awful. There are so many other apps that have the same functionality as Kies (tho granted not one app that does everything Kies does) that work perfectly with custom roms.
Only reason to use Kies would be if you went back to stock because you wanted official ICS OTA or similar IMHO.
I did a backup with Kies, now my all contacts, sms, videos, music, calendar are in this f***in' backup file.. :| I have an awfull headache Or i can do a restore with another app, will it be compatible with Kies's backup file?
same problem. USB connection to PC will only charge. Recently updated to 2.3.6.

Won't work on my samsung galaxy s2 (ICS 4.0.3) - windows Xp (sweet)
I have a problem with connection my wife's ACE with ODIN / PC. I'll write you a few facts to help you in helping me.
I've flashed phone and rooted (odin detect it and I could also connect to the computer as mass storage).
Even after uploading the new firmware, I could copy some files to the phone.
And here is the biggest problem ... I do not know what happened but something started to go bad (crash with applications, root disappeared, there was an old version of the firmware - I have no idea as possible ... the phone uses the wife and children ).
I tried to clear the cash and fix permission - and in this operation, the phone has crashed.
I decided to flash it again.
I did all the cleaning and format factory.
And that was the end of my adventure - because when I want flashign, odin does not detect the phone. Phone is not not detected as a computer disk.
After a long time of connection by usb cable, Windows pop me up by standard error "encountered a problem installing your hardware ..." "one of the USB devices connected to the computer improvement may not work ...".
Checked on a desktop and laptop.
On both of these computers my other phone (SGS) works correctly and is detected - using the same cable (so cable and ports and drivers are ok).
Could you help me please?
Kies should install the drivers when you plug it in. But during flashing, you need to close kies.
It's not the issue. Drivers are work correctly because other phone is detected. Kies is close.

The problem started with 2 & 5 .
You probably flashed a new stock firmware , which caused root functionality to disappear .
In number 4 , fix permissions should only be used if a few system apps keeps force closing
In number 6 , factory reset isn't needed unless absolutely necessary
I'd recommend you to go to www.sammobile.com and download the firmware that you were using
Then flash it with ODIN

It should detect your phone
Try ending all Kies processes by using Task Manager

this is your problem. Uninstall your phone in Device Manager and install it properly by downloading the standalone USB driver for S5830. Google for it. This happened to me on Win XP. On Win 7, the native/vanilla USB drivers worked fine.

Recently after flashing my S2 with aokp rom , i have no more acces to my phone as usb storage, it charges only and moreover i can no more have access to odin (it shows driver not found). I tried differenent solution like :
1- change cable (th same cable is ok for samsung mini)
2- hard reset
3-reinstalling drivers with kies and samsung drivers
4- going to drivers et uninstalling them (the pc dont show nothing at all like my phone its not plugged)
Somtimes it worked like 2 on 10 attempts but after 2 days no more
Also i noticed somthing in download mode it shows that i cant recognise the device, a bootloader problem maybe(correct me if i am wrong)

Download mode should work regardless off your rom type.
Try different USB port, or try different computer
U really should try to clean the Micro USB port in first place, i read a lot of cases that phone was not recognized or it just didnt appear to connect to computer just because the port was oxyded... after cleaning (maybe with a very little screw and cotton) try to connect, if it dont, try on another computer, if it still happens its a problem on ur phone, then u will need to flash something, but lets wait till u test all this first ! keep us informed !
Dont forget to try to borrow a usb cable from a friend ! Doenst matter if urs works on another phone...

Unfortunately i have the EXACT same problem.. tried everything "changing storage, re installing drivers, cleaning the usb port, trying different pcs and cables". Nothing works :S .. it also works at random times and then stops. Really annoying.
Well i clenaed the usb port with a needle and cotton but no detection, but i noticed that if my phone is off he is detected as unkown device

Well maybe it's not a hardware problem, i found that bootloader is related to driver usb detection, a bootloader problem maybe (correct me if i am wrong ) hhh
I have the exact same problem, the only difference is my sgs is still not rooted or flashed,
the last thing I did is update from gb to ics
what I has tried is hard reset, clean the usb port and try with another pc (2 notebook, 1 pc) and with 3 different cable
still not recognized....
No it's starting to bother me , after i full charge it acts like it charges but it's not plugged i think my usb port is caput , i'll try to take it to someone no guaratantee to send it back
Well finally i changed the usb flex cable and it worked but be carefull at testing the phone when you send it to repair the usb flex cable have also the micro so ba aware at testing the phone

I have a rooted stock ICS SGS2. Since a couple of weeks my USB connection on my laptop isn't working anymore. When I connect the SGS2 to USB, nothing happens on the phone and nothing happens on the laptop.
No "unknown device", no "USB connection" beep, no USB connection on the phone.
I tried a differtent cable, didnt work. I tried on another PC, didnt work.
I change developer USB-settings (USB error check) but didnt work.
I searched a lot, but couldn't find any solution. Can anyone please help me?
P.S. Running on Windows 7 64x Professional

does your phone charge when conneted to the computer, you do not need drivers for that. If it does not try cleaning the usb port on your phone, there maybe dust or something stopping the cable from making ful contact.

I had a similar problem ,
1-first try to check in parmater section -> stockage if usb debugging is on
2-Second try to reinstall kies for drivers
3-> change cable or clean your usb port with a toothbruch (slightely hhhh)
4-> if nothing of these solutions works and you get an unknow device also with odin that means youre usb port is broken, it simple to change and dont cost a lot (170 MAD for me ).
There are other threads that spoke about the same problem.Hope it works
My phone charges when connected. I also tried re-installing Kies and cleaned the phone port. Nothing helped

If you've tried 'everything', then it's a hardware issue. Unroot it, reset the flash counter, send it in for warranty service.
I put a stock sammobile I9100 xwlse 4.1.2 jelly bean rom on my Galaxy s2 worked fine for 2 days now I have problems charging the phone saying after half an hour its charged when its not also windows 7 will not reconise the device anymore tried factory reset still no joy even when I unplug the charger or plug it in its go's slower to start charging or stop chargeing its annouying the hell out of me tried on windows to uninstall the drivers and reintsall to no avail any ideas

About the battery problem, it seems like it's out of "sync", you should let it from exactly 0 to exactly 100. That should fix it.
About the not recognizing, have you tried different USB port on the PC? Tried on another PC? Tried with another phone? Tried with a different USB cable?
You have many options, now go try them.

I am having a similar issue, when I plug my phone into a windows PC through USB the MTP driver is buggy, have to reconnect and change to media device a few times until it installs, and then the issue afterwards will be the phone will seem as if it is being plugged and unplugged multiple times after its been disconnected (usually when I have media player running too) ... this issue was non-existant before the software update so I'm sure its gotta be an issue.

Tried what you said and no luck tried draining battery and recharging but still saying fully charged when its not also tried to conect to a diffrent computer still no luck there either and I did try a diffrent usb lead and still the computers say device not supported anything else to try

You are not rooted are you?
Your usb flex must be dusty/busted.
Nope not rooted tried uninstalling drivers and reinstalling even tried Keis not a thing I get error code 43 on my pc even though the drivers are there it says usb device not reconised so for some reason which is doing my head in I cannot get it to connect with my pc on windows 7 also tried it on another computer with XP on and get the same problem tried driffrent usb ports and usb leads as well
Error 43 is a start.
Disable the antivirus and don't install the drivers, install kies.
Try a laptop.

Tried my galaxy 2 again tonight after I replaced the battery I suspected may have been faulty ie not holding its charge and low and behold it is also connecting fine to the pc now I do not know if this is related it could be but as of now for some reason I am puzzled its now working on my pc thanks for your help in trying to solve this problem will alway pop here from time to time to read about any problems I may get and for updates once again thanks for your help it great having a site like these for help:laugh::good:
