So I just rooted my Verizon galaxy s4 using the method posted on this here. The bootloader is still locked so I haven't flashed any custom roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380325
Its been about 3 days. Starting this morning my phone will some times crash and I will get the message "unfortunately contacts has stopped". I don't know why this is happening. When I search the internet all I get is I should resore to factory settings. My question is am I able to even do this since my device is rooted? Would I be able to flash a new rom with my boot loader locked?
I think I should also mention what I've done to this phone since I rooted. I've pretty much only backed up my data and apps using titanium back up. I've deleted and froze some of the Bloatware (Mainly just verizon and samsung stuff). I've also installed nova launcher and greenify. That's about it.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

just updated to the latest Saurom for samsung note at&T and lost my root and my contacts for some reason! I've flashed many roms and have always had my contacts back after entering my gmail account! I'm sill on the rom but no way to boot into cwm to reflash any idea's
Got it
I had to run unroot then reboot and cwm to get root back... Then logged onto my Gmail and went to contacts and did a restore from an earlier time and it brought back my contacts then I was able to get them on my phone
How in the world do you flash a custom ROM and end up withOUT root? I've been roming since my G1 days and have never heard of this, didn't even think it was possible! Regardless, its good thatbyou got it fixed, and even better that you had the sense to come back and report how you remedied the situation. Most people don't do that and anyone looking for a solution in the future are screwed.

same thing happened to me after i flashed the rom :/ What did you use to unroot and root again through cwm? thanks.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Y. I got it about 2 months ago and used a stock rom that wasn't from my region on it. It worked fine even with root till about 2 days ago. Then I decided to reboot my phone but it entered a boot loop. I flashed my region's stock rom on it (DDLA1) and then I updated it to the latest version (DDLC3). I thought that since it was using a stock rom it wouldn't get bricked but after rooting my phone again to restore all my apps and data using Titanium Backup it got an unexpected error but it wasn't even immediate. I got the error about 30 minutes after rooting my phone. The error, however, didn't stop my phone completely. It just force closed the app that I was using. But after I rebooted to put in my SIM card it entered the boot loop again.
Some extra info:
Since I'm using Go Launcher I uninstalled my Samsung Home screen, keyboard and any other apps that I don't need.
My questions:
1) Can someone help me figure out the problem. If you need me to give you any extra details just ask.
2) Is there any other way to back up and restore my device.
3) Could any of my previous attempts at unbricking cause this. It worked every single time but each time the same thing happened. It got bricked again after about 30 minutes after bricking. (That's 30 minutes of time that I used the phone. It didn't brick when my phone was sleeping for an entire night.)
If you just reflash stock ROM without restoring any backup, are there still problems? Maybe some app with root privileges causes the error. Please post a list of all such apps you use and aren't sure that they cause no problem.
I use Titanium Backup, App 2 SD Root, and TBPatcher (to get the one click restore to work)
I think the root of the problem wasn't rooting (see what I did there ) but as you said App 2 SD root. Now it works properly without any problems. I'm not entering a boot loop like I used to so I'm extremely happy. I just need to find someway to install apps to the SD. I remember reading about it somewhere but I'm not too sure because I had root access then and didn't care about things that didn't require root.
You said "Since I'm using Go Launcher I uninstalled my Samsung Home screen, keyboard and any other apps that I don't need" - have you simply tried restoring the stock ROM and not doing any of that?
SO here is the deal... I am a complete an total rooting noob but i need some help. After unlocking the bootloader with the help of Hansoons2000 tool and then flashing the phone and then pushing SuperSu to the phone i installed super su and that is where my issues began. After installing SUperSu i got stuck on the Quietly Brilliant screen on my first boot i heard this could take a while so i waited about an hour. Thats when i realized I had a problem. Heres a list of all the steps i attempted so far but to no avail..
I went into recovery and did a factory reset and cleared the cache.. Didnt work
I also relocked the phone and unlocked assuming it would wipe it that did not work.
ANy help to save my phone would be greatly appreciated. I am a first time rooter and have been stressing about my phone all day thinking i threw 700 dollars down the Drain. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And i may ask some stuid question because i am a noob. Thanks in Advance!
By the way it is an Att One X+ that i got about 3 weeks ago if that helps
which recovery you have?
you need a custom recovery for rooting
Install the TWRP Recovery if you haven't already. Do it through terminal. Then, go install a custom Rom (I suggest Viper XL+). Make sure you wipe everything your supposed to. You can do this with the installation of. Venom, it is the AROMA Installer. Flash the boot.img through terminal to. Everything should be fine and it will be rooted.

This might mean that you would need to reinstall a new rom. Now what you can do to avoid the whole fast boot terminal stuff you can try locking the bootloader and running the ruu for the at&t hox+. What that does is it wipes everything and brings the phone back to stock (stock rom, stock recovery)
After the install goes through you can re unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery (I have an at&t hox+ and use CWM) and flash a new rom (I use desensed stock look Elegancia ROM)
I like doing the ruu method because I like having a clean slate if something went wrong.

Gald you got it working again! I had to find out myself how to fix my phone when similar stuff happened to me too, now I am able to flash my phone properly with different roms. It's almost like an addiction .
now on topic, the one method i do use for backup is I use the CWM backup method, because it says your apps and your systems settings etc all in one folder and when you finish installing your new rom you can use the CWM recovery to restore the backup of your phone. CWM will restore your information and apps as well as the screens and where the icons were at in the home screens. Pretty cool I'd have to say
Now as a backup to the backup I keep my text messages call logs MMS alarms near and dear to me so I use My Backup Pro, keeps a backup online on their servers and can restore them without a prob (although I do find it annoying when it saves information when you sync facebook to the contacts. i have about 200 contacts on my phone and somehow it backs up 700 contact information?)
The tool I used to unlock my bootloader, root my phone, and install CWM (Clockworkmod Recovery) is here
pretty self explanatory and easy and has not failed me
Any questions feel free to ask
same
That the same program unused the first time that bricked my phone after installing super su so do I need to install supersu or are there any alternatives? Thanks for all your help.
I've had my brand new SCH-I545 since thanks giving now. I've been trying to root and get a custom ROM on the phone ever since then and have gotten closer and closer but haven't been able to quite get everything to co-operate.
I may catch scorn for posting such a generic question on a flagship phone but I've been up all night for 2 weeks now trying to get this to work following numerous tutorials but with android everything seems to get outdated when there are so many software variables at hand that are constantly changing like firmwares and build numbers. I've included all the info since it all seems to be vital and have tried to seperate tasks by paragraph so you can skip over what you feel may be arbritrary. So if I could get an up to date breakdown on how I could succeed in my endevour I'd appreciate it greatly.
Out the box I have a 4.4.2 and NK1 build number. I was finally able to get root access through towel root after flashing back to NC5. However even after flashing NC5 through odin, about phone still says my baseband and build number end I545VRUFNK1 but towelroot no longer gives me the "phone not supported" message and I'm able to succesfully atain root access, confirmed by root checker. Is that normal?
So I have root now but want a custom ROM. VZW locks the bootloaders on new phones so I believe that means I can't use a custom recovery like CWM. I've tried and tried but it doesn't work, neither does the CWM Rom manager app. I've managed to get a custom recovery through installing BusyBox and Safestrap. (I had to go through several apk's to get Safestrap to work. Usually I would be able to enter TWRP recovery through it but the recovery won't respond to any of my touches. The power button still works to turn the screen on and off so it is not frozen but it won't respond when I swipe to unlock it. Even now that I have it working, if the screen locks I'm unable to unlock it even if TWRP is performing a task in the backround and clearly not frozen.
One time I was able to more or less successfully flash LiquidSmooth (LS-KK-v3.2-2014-10-04-jflte.zip). This was the closest I ever got to my goal as the ROM succesfully booted up and I was able to browse the home screen and change all the settings and it was a moment of joy until I went to settings and switched wifi on it just wouldn't. It either just wouldn't switch or would switch right back and grey itself out I don't remember exactly. My phone had no service either for calls, text or 4G. So everything worked internally it just couldnt comunicate with any signals coming from outside the phone. Why would this be? If I manage to boot LiquidSmooth again is there something I could download to make the wifi/service work? (I could download through USB or Odin.)
After this I tried to flash CM but the phone wouldnt even start after installation and would just bootloop so I had to flash back to stock to make it work again. Then I tried LiquidSmooth several more times but now I get stuck at the bootscreen for LiquidSmooth where it has the logo and the backround flashing. I've let the animation loop for several minutes multiple times before doing a battery pull.
Basically for 2 weeks I've been flashing NC5->rooting->flashing NK1 back->installing safestrap->installing a rom->soft bricking->flashing back to stock ROM and starting again
Is it possible if I keep doing this proccess that it will just work one time? It may sound silly but I kind of believe just because I've had varrying degrees of success following the exact same procedure.
And when I install a ROM in TWRP I go Wipe->(swipe factory reset)->Install->(select LS.zip and wait for it to say its succesfully installed)->Swipe one more time to wipe cache->Reboot after this the phone either fails to start up or loops the LiquidSmooth animation. As I said, one time it started succesfully.
Let me know what any of this information leads you to believe and if you may have a sollution in mind. Huge thanks to anyone that read this and will try to help me. I've had this phone 2 weeks now and would like to start actually using it.

The issue is that safestrap is incompatible with the roms you are trying to use. It can be only used with Touchwiz based roms(i.e. using the stock kernel). Try flashing hyperdrive rom. Also, Im not familiar if NK1 can use towelroot and safestrap well. My recommendation would be to
1. clean wipe to nc5
2. towel root
3. install safestrap
4. flash ONLY roms that say they were safestrap compatible.
5. Flash any patches, modems, etc.
Weeks? How about spending a few hours reading up on what you can and can't do with your phone.

Ok, thanks, I was going to try to flash hyperdrive but the ROM I found was 1.2GB and I didn't have that much space on my SD. I'll borrow an empty one and try it again. Is it not odd that LS did a full boot if it's not compatible with safestrap? And are there any other Touchwiz roms? I don't like Touchwiz and am trying to get as far from it as I can but if I could just delete the bloatware (which I can still only disable after towel root), get SD access and get rid of the battery restrictions.

The reason that LS did a full boot is because certain aosp roms can function with a touchwiz kernel. However, the result is always buggy. There is s4 verizon general thread talking about this.
There are many other tw roms. Just go to andriod devlopment! On the top of my head, I can think of eclipse, hyperdrive, echoe, and empty galaxy.
I rooted my phone about two weeks ago and everything when fine. I installed safestrap 3.75 and made a backup of the phone. Now three weeks later the phone started freezing and when I boot into safestrap it wont let me select anything. So I used oden and restored the phone back to factory no root and it is still freezing. It freezes when ever it wants to. So there is no particular app causing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What did you flash back on and to? Did you make sure when rooting your phone you flashed the NK1 kernel again?
Yes I flashed the nk1 kernel back after root. When it started freezing three weeks later I flashed it back to unrooted original. I flashed it with I545VRUFNK1.
