Laggy ? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey guys so I just upgraded to the s4 and for some reason it seems laggy and slow . Now I did install safe strap root and flashed hyper and jelly but there was a lag feeling to it compared to my note 2. Titanium takes longer to restore same number if apps and even adding a gmail account its has some lag. So I went back to stock rooted to try this. Anyone else have this happen? I thought the s4 would be faster than n2.

I have gotten as high as 29000 something or other without overclocking the CPU. I think I was on Hyperdrive. I'd think vanir would smoke. That is one fast rom. Just did a run of that benchmark on eclipse 2.0. I have very modified kernel settings. Aimed @ a mix of battery and performance and scored 26500. Underclocked CPU.

Officially? No, it'll be locked down like any other release. After that? Who knows, we'll just have to wait to see if someone will be able to do it.
What kind of lag are you experiencing exactly? Mine used to stutter a lot more than it does now... here's what I did to fix mine:
1) Freeze/uninstall all bloat of course
2) In Dev options change all window animations to .5 (or off if you want)
3) Turn off Lock Screen animations (water drop/light effect) <--- this made the biggest difference oddly
4) Install Nova launcher and don't use too many home screen widgets
5) (Optional) I use a program called Clean Master which will clean up junk files and cache for you
My S4 still isn't completely lag free, it does still stutter from time to time during heavy multitasking but I think that's just the nature of a heavy skin like Touchwiz running in the background. Unfortunately I have ME7 so comparing it to AOSP is out of the question right now (I don't really want to run Safe Strap at the moment).
There are also other things I haven't tried like Greenify-ing apps and whatnot, but for now I'm happy with how it's acting.

Opening apps up and unlocking phone was laggu for me. I'll try what you suggested. I'm hoping I can either trade my phone for a mdk version or 4.3 becomes unlockable

I'm not sure. I doubt it. I have been hopeful that a dev is sitting on an exploit waiting until the 4.3 update to release it so there is not a opportunity to patch it. But as far as I know right now there is no exploit for the me7 boot loader and no prospects on the horizon.

My wife has a S3 and I also had one before I upgraded to the S4. Initially this phone felt slower to me too but after rooting and installing a stock debloated rom it seems plenty fast. I rarely notice any lag at all....maybe after about 10 days without rebooting. My wifes S3 is SLOW as heck now which is really strange. I tried factory resetting it and last weekend flashed it in Odin...still slow.....her phone is insanely slow compared to mine.

Yeah, maybe my expectations were too high. I was running bonestock and it was the smoothest experience I had. But, the occasional home button lag, super slow dialer, and choppy performance during some game play and scrolling made the overall experience disappointing.

I know it's fun to bash Touchwiz but I think a lot of lag issues still hide under Android itself... I'm hoping to see good results with the TRIM feature in 4.4 (not sure if it's in 4.3?) to totally get rid of lag across all Androids.
I completely agree with you though, Touchwiz is bloated and heavy and I prefer stock Android over all others.

I agree with this ^^^
I had this happen to me when I had my Photon. After about a week, I couldn't deal with it anymore. I fully wiped and reflashed everything, and I worked like a champ after this.
Another time, it keep freezing up and rebooting. It did it about 10-15 times a day, and I couldn't figured out why. It drove me crazy. After reading on xda that it maybe a bad app, I started removing the apps I had installed around the time it started. Once I removed the problem app, I never had an unexpected reboot again. I would have never believed an app could reek such havoc, but they can. Uninstall your apps one at a time, and see if the speed improves. You may have one not playing nice.
Hope this helps. Good luck
Did it run slow while it was stock? Maybe you have a bum unit.

Will take a while to hunt down the app but anybody else have 'LinkedIn' app installed? It just hot rebooted while launching that app from a fresh restart - quickest hot reboot I've ever seen.
It might not be that app but then I went to the Play Store page and there are tons of 1 star reviews because the last update failed on people's phones - more interestingly the most recent comment is from a GS2 user who says latest update reboots his phone.
I've uninstalled it and I doubt I can be that lucky that it's that app and I find it so quickly but crossing my fingers.
Mine rebooted after I opened the Navigation app.

I had the same problem on my previous Captivate and am having it now on the GS III; no rhyme or reason to the reboots that I can see.
I still have heat problem but I played w/ different settings to see what it is.... I had att s3 which got really really hot... So returned it for Verizon s3. Verizon is better but learned that the data (lte/s3) makes it really hot and battery drain. Also the screen, of course.
If you're rooted then go get Phone info and disable lte. I tried CDMA auto for Verizon and it got much better... But at lowered download speed. I change it when I speed the speed... Doesn't require reboot so it's easy to change.
U can also under clock using setCPU.
I don't need it to be fast normally except when playing games... So just have it at 384min and 1024max... I find this helps allot w/ heat as well... U can try and find your setting that's acceptable speed and heat.
Just sharing my experience here.... So good luck.

Happens here too with the T-Mobile GS3. I think they rushed their fabrication process to deliver a high volume and fubared a few hardwarewise. I've even had it lockup/freeze once when not even in the OS but just in the recovery menu's. But yeah, the usual is a totally random unpredictable hot reboot throwing out my resident programs, homescreen, ect. Starts with the screen being frozen and not accepting input, then a short vibration, then back to homescreen reloading and all regular apps and widges that are supposed to run at boot load again. It's as if there's a micro static short or something. Anyway, I'm sick of problem solving and looking through logcats. Going back in for warranty. This is a dream phone except for this ultra annoying bug that it seems not many people have.

Happened to me once or twice (that I noticed) in the two weeks before I rooted (stock UCALEM), and a few more times after. It's just TouchPiz being pizzy. Maybe someone can catch the logcat, but there's nothing we can do about it (except install a better ROM )
How would anyone be able to diagnose this BS
"OK. My phone is hot. And it randomly reboots".
"Crap - u r out of luck buddy. Go change ur damn phone".
Provide ur phone model, ROM version, apps installed. Check ur battery stats.
As a solution - flash any custom ROM which removes bloatware.

Anyone give seeder a shot for lag?

Edit.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
Android doesn't have lag. It suffers from low framerate at times, but latency is not the issue.
That said, the only place I ever see low framerate is when I have a huge widget list to scroll through.

Okay, just gave 1.1 a shot. Apps are in fact loading up faster when pressed but that's the only thing I notice so far. Can't have a final say on anything else because it's so hard to tell on a Quad Core device with Jelly Bean. But thanks for letting us know of this.
Haven't tried it myself but....
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/entropy-seed-generator-not-all-its-hacked-up-to-be/
There are valid concerns about lag and how the Android OS handles them, and there is discussion currently ongoing within the Android Code about this, but this fix does not address those issues and instead gives performance gains through boosting CPU speed. The developer himself stated that this could in effect reduce battery life, since the hack is waking the CPU every second.

I grabbed this a few days ago when you mentioned it on CTO (thanks buddy). I notice apps opening noticably faster when it's running. I have it set to "start automatically on boot" but any time I "remove all" from a home button long press, which I do after I've been on my phone for a while, the app stops running and I forget to restart it. I wish it would persist that.

A moderator deleted it though, conveniently. They of course left behind the part where CM is allegedly endorsing it though.

Stock vs Rooted

Now I'm not your average user. I've only owned two android phones: the LG esteem and now the DNA. The Esteem was really a solid phone and the development team really allowed the phone to go above and beyond its limits. Though I loved my Esteem the DNA just blows it out the water in all aspects. I rooted my Esteem because it wasn't as good stock. A phone like this makes me wonder is it even necessary to root because it's already so fast and so smooth.
And that's pretty much my question. As I hold my DNA in my hand I'm wondering if I should go ahead and root or just keep it as stock. What do you guys think?

Giving root to everyone might not be optimal for average users that aren't tech savvy... however it really shouldn't be difficult to get root access...once a device is bought, the users should have the right to do what they want with it. Think about buying a laptop and not being able to put an OS you want on it...could we have a petition to force companies to let the device really be owned by the user after its been payed for?

I couldn't agree more lol. I've never liked any stock UI but.... it just works nicely. Camera is the only disappoint to me.

Dont flash cm/pa only because you want to flash something. Stock is faster and easy adjustable.

Come on, faster?
Noooo. 4.4 debloated and running in art mode on this thing is ridiculous fast, and the extra free ram and fewer running processes make for much better multitasking.
I did love the stock rom, but a properly setup aosp rom will always be faster.

Coming from a Sony xperia with a snapdragon s4 pro, i can only say that i'm blown away like a poor guy that stepped on a mine. Best phone 2013.

LG G2 and Paranoid Android 4.0 is a match made in geek heaven. I love this phone and haven't even thought of trading it (coming from a guy that has had the S4, iPhone 5, and iPhone 5s all in the past 7 months because he wasn't satisfied.)

Any extreme bugs? Thinking about switching from cm10.2.

If you have much free ram on android something is wrong. Android is based on Linux and it runs faster with the ram as full as possible.

There is no point repeating this, mate. There will always be "smarter" people who will claim that free RAM is good as if our phones were running Windows 95.
How do you like your new G2, OP?

Hey, think what you guys want. Haha
There's a reason they keep including more ram in phone's. But hey you guys know best right?
Hahahaha. K.
More free ram will always allow for more multitasking and a snappier opening of apps. If you geniuses want to run your phone's bogged down to ahead. More running processes also loads the cpu.
There's so much wrong in what you guys are saying it's not even funny.
How do you think the infamous v6 supercharger script worked?

That article was written 2 years ago and was incorrect when it was written. Do you understand that an article isn't definitive proof? You just linked me to the opinion of another because you're not intelligent enough to articulate the idea your self.

I would take Houstonn's PA 4.0 over CM. I use PA as my daily driver and I don't see any bugs. FYI, I use my G2 as a phone, meaning Emails, calls, sms, internet( for info search only), gps, lite YT and all of these work just fine for me.
Can't complain with mine....coming from L920.....very fast, running with Buckeye 2.1....mostly stock, just debloated.....LG G2 has come a long way from the LG G2x...I hated that phone mostly due to the poor battery life....and the crashes and reboots.....gave it to my son then passed on to his mom, the ex-wife, but surprisingly, she's still using it.
