Hello,
I'll cut to the chase cause i have a tendency to drag out the tiniest detail for ages, and i just wanna ask this XD
Basically, i have a Galaxy S II, and i love it, i started hacking it around august after owning it since the UK launch. I like to see myself as fairly competant when it comes to NOT permabricking it, however i still am hesitant to flash new roms, kernels cause of lingering fears.
So! What i came here to ask, is i am planning to purchase a second phone just for this reason, and have been looking at the Nexus One, HTC Desire, and original Galaxy S. Sadly i dont know much about the hacking scene of every other phone, so i dont really know what other choices there are.
Basically, what phone would you reccomend, even if i havent mentioned it, to buy purely for the community behind it?
Thanks,
Katy
The HTC Vision (aka the T-Mobile G2/Desire Z) has a great community of developers, cookers, and users. I was hesitant to start flashing custom ROMs initially after rooting as well. So I went back and hacked my old Motorola Cliq to test things out. I promise you if you can read and follow directions you'll have no problems flashing ROMs... there's a great variety of ROMs for the Vision and I expect in the not too distant future we'll also see Ice Cream Sandwich.

I would beg to differ on the previous HTC comment. I have an Evo. It's getting up in age, but I love it. There are tons of roms available for it, and even though development has slowed, you'd still be surprised at the amount of development happening. If you're looking for a phone solely for playing with, you'd have plenty of options with the Evo. You can get one fairly cheap, especially if you opt for one with a bad ESN - which you might as well since you won't be activating it.
It's nearly impossible to brick - the only way you could would be to pull the battery during a radio update.
Of course which phone you get depends on your wants and needs. Check out the development subforums for the devices you have in mind.

Nexus one and evo is different. Doesn't like HTC due to not giving out updates that they promised. Eg: HTC flyer is still in GB. If you wanted a true unbrickable phone, get a developers' phone. Instant update and super extremely easy to unlock. And it is fit for every update to give you full user experience.

The HD2 is an option too. Getting seriously old (but that much as dual core has still to be really used by the OS) but it sill has a lot of development going on, kernel and ROM wise...MIUI, CM7, Sense, WP7 and WinMo etc.
So I've been looking to buying an amaze for the last couple of weeks.
And in the past couple of days I'm having second thoughts.
The amaze still doesn't have s-off, and is lacking in devs. And even of of does get s off who's to says devs are going to buy it? With the HTC one coming.
So my question is, should I buy an Amaze now? Or go with a device with tons of development like the sensation?
Or, wait a little longer and get the One X or whatever it will be called for t mobile. Which will probably get s off pretty quickly with around 4 different versions right?
Any recommendations?
One thing to keep in consideration is that I will be paying full price for the phone. As $70 a month is a little steep right now, as I'm 17.

I love the Amaze. I think it is a great phone. But at this point I don't think I would choose the Amaze. Lack of development, no s-off, and dwindling interest and support would send me in another direction if I had to choose a phone today.
Having said that, I have no regrets and am still very happy with my choice.
The Amaze has great hardware, but its software counterpart is lacking. We don't have many devs for this phone, so if you're okay with not having a lot of ROMs to flash, then by all means get an Amaze
That's really the only reason why I'm having any second thoughts.
Coming from an HTC Incredible there has always been as many Roms as you wanted. Untilled recently everything is just perfect only ICS ports and CM7 are really active lately.
I really don't think think not having many Roms will be a problem... I don't think
The One S looks good but, I Honestly can't go without a spare battery. No sdcard I could get away with.
Thanks for your guy's input, I'll probably be buying one this weekend.
That being said... If anyone has an amaze they want to sell shoot me a message. I'm looking for around $400 + shipping on ebay.
I can't pay untill Saturday, so no rush.

wait for the new phones
honestly coming from the G2x i feel this phone is really solid, ive been running stock and i dont feel the urge to flash, it never heats up, sound quality is amazing on phone and music (imagine with beats audio) i can honestly compare it to my iphone 4 and say its a hell of a lot faster, and nicer. I love the screen on this 4.3 inch is amazing and good multitouch. THe only complaint i have is sometimes the screenbleed from the buttons can be a bit annoying but realy i dont notice it anymore. I get full 24 hour charge atleast so i like it
I came from the incredible also..plenty of roms. If you want a solid good phone then yes get the Amaze.
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using XDA
I came from the myTouch 4G which has all the development that you could ever want for a phone that was treated like a redheaded stepchild by T-Mobile. I decided on the Amaze after lurking in the development subforum and deciding on everything that I was going to do with this phone. When I saw that NRG brought Energy to the Amaze, I was sold. It didn't matter to me that it was only Sense 3.0 either. I was already subscribed to the Energy threads for the MT4G and the Sensation and it was exactly what I wanted for the Amaze.
If you are a flash-o-holic. no. wait for the one S. I mean i wouldn't be two concerend. HTC is well aware of how fast their phones die. I can't imagine that they wouldn't make a phone with terrible battery life and they not an option for a spare.
I came from the TP2 and nrgz had a ROM on that phone. By far my favorite I ran. I've already downloaded all of the files to root and flash the Amaze when I buy it.
And honestly, If the One series turns out to be as good as everyone is hyping about I can always sell the Amaze. Which is unlikely that I would.
I think the number of choices for the Amaze will be fine, I'm trying to find a ROM and stick with it.

CM9 is being worked on and a few other developers are working on AOSP roms for our phone, sure it may take a while for them to be done, but progress is being made.
Dear friends,
I really wanted to. I had so much hope for this device, but I can no longer do it. I love aosp and absolutely loathe sense. That being said for some reason I love HTC. They make beautiful, sexy, durable, powerful and for the most part, reasonably priced. But it seems to me that the salad days are behind me. I've had the aria, hero, touch pro, evo, HD, inspire, incredible, vivid, one x, and lastly the x+. But my last few haven't impressed and so here we are. As of last night I sold my x+, hugged my pillow, and cried myself to sleep. The latest set back was finally just to much for me after a long series of disappointments on other devices. I am using the money to buy an N4 and most likely will stick with the flagship on down the line. I plan to start learning as much as possible to help solve issues like this in the future. I say good bye and thank you to a great community and impressive company for now, its been an awesome ride.
Greatest regards,

That's a sad thread... should probably be ranamed as a "Farewell Thread"
But there is no way of happiness here, really... I was always with HTC, comming from HTC Touch Dual which was fun these days. Then my favourite HTC HD2. I was really crying when I sold it a few month ago... but sh.. I sold it for 200 bucks, and that was a price in january this year. Now I got mine HTC One X+. No trouble with a device it works, it works good, but I had more fun with my HD2 than what I have now. Want to say thanks for every dev, every member and every noob in HTC Community. That was good times. But HTC is dissapointing me, dissapointing me so much, that all my hate for Samsung has gone now and I'm switching to S4 in some time. But untill that, my heart still belongs to HTC... don't know for how long.
Same here. I gave my daughter my hox+ and downgraded to her S2 just so I could run CM again. I'll keep the S2 until the Motorola Google X is released. I too plan to stay with Google's flagship device from now on (whoever makes it). Thanks for everyone's help with hox+ related issues and questions.

This reminds me of the farewell posts back in the Windows Mobile days. I got this phone in December, and it still has the stock ROM on it. None of the ROM's here really inspire me. This is coming from someone who went through the wire trick on the Sensation XE so I could load custom ROM's on it. Maybe I am just getting lazy, but looking for something different.
I'm curious as to what you think is wrong with the current AOSP roms for the One X+? Or is it because you have the AT&T version and don't have a stable AOSP rom yet (afaik)?

It's not that there's something wrong with them, how would I know as I've not even flashed one, right? I used to love flashing ROMs, but now I guess I don't find it all that exciting anymore. I am on the International version of the HOX+ so which ROM would you recommend?

There will be CM for AT&T sooner than later though right? If sense is your only issue may as well stick it out
Patience doesn't hurt much. I've got plenty of other things to keep my attention, and I still have my Inspire to play with AOSP for now. Lloir has put a lot into this device so far, and even if not at full capacity he's said he plans to keep it going. Some calls for assistance have been sent out to other devs as well, I hear. And some of the names I've heard mention of are quite talented.
It's just a matter of time, and I think this device will be pretty great once it's got some AOSP love in it. I've had the device since November, and running Elegancia with the Nova launcher it's already quite good. I don't like sense as much as AOSP but Elegancia has been great so far. Great ROM, great dev. Besides I can't go saying there isn't enough dev work going into the device if I haven't taken the time to learn to dev myself.
Stock Sense 4 is well done imho. I was also a flashaholic on previous Android builds but now I am not completely, but pretty satisfied with the stock version that is on the device. Maybe it is because JB is more primetime than any other Android build of past?
I'm too leaving HTC after being an HTC fan for a long time... HTC is focusing and spending a lot of time on locking down their devices than actually releasing software updates.. They could've spent this time on finding a way to make their devices brick proof rather than locking it down. Their idea of updating software is releasing a new phone just like they did with the HOX and HOX+..
HTC one looks like a great device, however why the release it with android 4.1.2??? So they can release HTC one+ a few months later with android 4.2.2??
I used to hate Samsung as they make plastic and cheap looking devices but I've come to respect them as they don't abandon their devices and kept supporting them to the last minute... S3 is getting 4.2.2 soon while HOX+ still stuck at 4.1.1!! Samsung s2 is getting jelly bean!! While desire Hd didn't get ics!
I'm joining the boat and ditching HTC for good

for what it's worth, S3 has been out for a lot longer. HOX+ is still pretty young. and lack of updates has more to do with lazy carriers than manufacturers typically. But I mean, go wherever you're happy going.
interesting to hear people willing to leave htc products behind, I've come from a long line of samsung phones when I jumped ship back in the desireHD days. Having tried the sony xperia z for a couple of weeks I was glad to be offered the one+ in exchange. I've missed the htc build quality

I think the hox+ is suffering from a timing issue. All of the devs upgraded to the hox after the desireHD/inspire and then htc released the + too soon. Bring on the Motorola X.

So many great comments here. I'm on the verge of jumping ship to the new S4. As you can see from my sig, I've been exclusively with HTC for some time now, and I realllly like the x+. It's really a sleek and beautiful phone, I hate using a case but its cheap insurance. Also, for once I really don't mind the stock ROM, just had to flash the available mods and now I'm content. HTC has always treated me well, sending me new batteries and chargers even out of warranty without giving me a hard time. But alas, this dropping new and better phones every few months is really annoying. Its like they purposly hold back so they can realse something "better". If they were smart they would've made s-off easier, gave it 2gigs, and put efforts into upgrading to 4.2.2 and make the hox+ the flagship for about a year. After reading the specs of the next ONE, I'm not impressed at all, its a downgrade in memory and camera. WHY? This day in age 64gigs or an SD slot on a high end device should be the standard, and even if the 4 megapixel camera is better IRL, on paper it sounds like poop. Honestly though I can't see the camera being any better, especially if you installed the 4.2 camera app from the mod section. This phones cameras is as good or better then my Kodak 18magepix point and shoot. HTC, quit playing games. Make one kick #$% phone, upgrade it when needed, and let it rock out for about a year, stop holing back so you can realse something "better" two months later.

All carriers lock down their devices, HTC unlocks bootloaders like other OEM's via a site, what else do u need to customize your device? S-off? Unneeded.
S2 is only getting in release cos it sold a boat load of phones so of course sammy will update it to keep the peace, sensation got nowhere near the sales to warrent it in all honesty.
Sammy also doesn't update its tablets or non flagship devices, they rarely if any see updates to next android versions.
The sg4 also won't be getting official AOSP according to cyanogen mod devs as Sammy never outs the source code for yrs. Sg3 was lucky to get support.
The official news is that all current HTC devices including HOS will be getting sense 5 which will be 4.2.2 on release, at which point ill be using Aokp klp on my HOX+.

I'm not talking about carriers as I always buy international unlocked phones.. s-off is really need to be able to flash from within the device and don't have to use a pc to do so. so bootloader unlock still a limited way to open up the device.
the sensation didn't do well because it had many problems and i have owned one before and hated it .. HTC tried to fix it by releasing the XL and still the same...
HTC has said that it will release sense 5 alone with 4.2.2 but let's be honest the release of the update will take ages to see the light, because HTC ONE has android 4.1.2 so other devices won't see any updates till HTC ONE gets 4.2.2 and then maybe after a few months they will release it.. and I won't be too surprised if HTC releases HTC ONE+ to fix issues on the original one and introduce new issues as well.
i just bought Galaxy Note 10.1 and in a matter of months it got jelly bean 4.1.1 and then 4.1.2 .. also tab2 10.1 got 4.1.2 and tab2 7" got 4.1.1 ..
regarding the S4, some developers said that they might not support it but not the CM team..
It's a joke that the HTC One will be shipped with 4.1.2. Key lime pie is knocking at the door in 1 month and then 4.1.2 is so outdated. If Samsung can ship their GS4 with 4.2.2 then HTC should be able too. But I guess sense 5 is a mess and will be slowing down all updates of the Android OS. Never buy a phone with an outdated software; it will slow down the update process even more. OEMs normally don't skip OS versions. So until the HTC One will get KLP it will be next year or more typical for HTC they will release a hardware refresh in 5 months that ships with KLP. No HTC for me anymore.
This is my first smartphone (been lurking for too long) and honestly, even though there isn't a complete AOSP for AT&T yet, I'm really impressed by everyone's hard work for HOX+. I know there's a lot that can be done with the phone that I have-- and, uh, I'll probably also switch to flagship after this, I just really wanted the internal storage-- but I'm satisfied now.
I guess it's different for people who have tasted the fruit of knowledge already, though, and I can't wait to do that too
Hi, I know there are probably a lot of threads like this, but I really need some help deciding here. Right now I am on Verizon and I have some crappy slider phone and have never owned a smartphone before. I own an iPod Touch and Nexus 7 so I know how both IOS and Android are. Personally, I prefer android which is why I decided to originally get the Galaxy S4. Today, I heard many stories of how the HTC One might be making its way to Verizon. I need you guys to help me decide if it is worth it to wait on the possibility of the HTC One coming to Verizon or just get the GS4 right away. Never owning a smartphone before makes me very impatient, which is sort of a problem.
Basically, is there any chance of the One coming to Verizon in your opinion, and if so, when do you think it will happen, and is it worth the wait? I also should note that I like to root and install custom roms, so if you think a certain phone will have better rom support over the other, let me know. Thank you and I look forward to your responses.
Edit: I had a chat session with Best Buy Mobile and when I asked if the One will be coming to Verizon, this was their response. I am not sure if they are reliable, but since they do work with Verizon, I kinda got some trust in them. Here is the screen shot. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1484678/Proof.PNG

Right now there's nothing saying the phone will come to Verizon, for sure. Chances are 50/50 on whether it will or won't. Waiting for it to happen might be a fruitless effort.
HTC generally allows unlocking of their devices with a tool (straight from them). That's great, but the Galaxy S4 has already been unlocked...so it's kind of a non-issue. Rooting and custom roms can be done now, very easily. I'd say just pick up a GS4 and enjoy it.

Thanks for your input, I will keep those reasons in mind. I updated the topic with a conversation I had with Best Buy Mobile.
The S4 will have much more support for custom roms. I hear there are some build quality issues with the HTC One. I have the S4 on Verizon and if we had the One in Black I'd buy that too However, I have more confidence in the S4 with quality control and support.
I'm hoping T-Mobile gets the One in Black because I will get it and use that as my work cell I love the feel of a premium handset in my hand like the iPhone 5. That's the ONLY reason I am considering the One as a future purchase. The feel of it.

Th HTC One obviously has a superior hand feel and design. Sense vs TouchWiz is a toss up to me, as they are both abominations in my mind.
However, the feel and industrial design of the S4 is not nearly as bad as I'd anticipated. It's definitely do-able for most users.
The big deciding factor for me, what eliminated the HTC One from contention, is the battery life in the GS4. By all accounts I've read, the battery life is considerably superior on the Samsung phone. My own experience in the short time that I've had this phone backs up those accounts - it lasts for quite a long time.

The deciding factor for me was lack of a user-replaceable battery in the One, and no SD card slot. S4 has both those, so, easy decision
Hey guys!
I would like to ask you to help me finding a new phone. I really have no idea what to buy and which specs I should look for.
I actually have an HTC One m7 and is still rockin', but I'm feeling it's time to change it.
I'm searching for a good camera (rear), fast, not too expensive.
I was interested to upgrade to HTC10, but then I read about the "gallery problem" (= you don't have the gallery anymore, just the google sync app) and this made me think about. I don't like this kind of things. (btw, is there a way to restore the old gallery?!)
So I was considering HTC 10 and One Plus 3T, but I don't know if there are any other phones which would be good to consider.
I really hope you guys can suggest me a great phone and why you would choose it!
Thanks
G.
