I have noticed that when I record video with the Thunderbolt that the picture quality is out of this world but the sound quality is terrible at best. I can barely hear my TV playing just 6 or 7 feet away from me. Anyone else have this problem?
I am running Infected ROM but have had this problem since it came out of the box.
Also, I was wondering, if I called VErizon support on this, could they tell that I had my phone rooted just by being on the phone with them?
This issue has been discussed on xda as well as a few other forums (htcs own community as well). I havent found an explanation or anything that fixes it unfortunately. I'm kinda upset about this since I'm constantly taking videos on my phone.

They don't know you're rooted. I exchanged my Moto droid 4 times, it was rooted each time. I often called them and they would just send me another. The buttons kept going bad on my phones. Bad luck I guess.
It uses the mic at the bottom of the phone (same one for phone calls) so make sure you're not covering that up. And it seems that unless whatever you're recording is close, you'll have issues. There was a post somewhere from someone who contacted HTC and was told it was due to the noise cancelling software
Well at least if its software related maybe it can be fixed in the first update. It's a shame to have such great video quality with such horrendous sound.

ignore what I posted, I am tired and that was stupid lol.
Do you actually use it as a phone or just as a multi media device?
I had two out of two with big problems and had to go back to my ancient BB and a friend in NH is now on his third and that one has now exhibited the issues on day 2.
I have hearing issues and even with hearing aids my hearing sucks.....so I would love to find that there is a Photon somewhere that works right because I found the earpiece and rear speaker to be wonderful for my hearing issues.
Seriously...has anyone not had the phone freeze up and shut off, lock up when attempting to answer a call, have calls not come through and simply go to voice mail and not had the silent call issues???
I really need it to be able to be used for voice communications for my personal and professional buisnesses.
Maybe I just need to get one some place other than Best Buy?
Yes, I have never had a problem with calls. I have never had freeze ups when answering a call. I didn't have it very long before putting mr3 on it. But the only freeze ups I've had, were when I was plugged in with Wifi on, and tried to turn on usb mode.
Loving this Mopho!
Thanks for sharing your experience.
I use my phone for multiple operations and phone calls have never glitched out on me either. Everything seems to be working properly and I use it all day every day.
Also there is supposed to be an ota update very soon addressing these problems.
Loving this Mopho!
I use ghe MoPho for phone calls as well as Internet browsing. I have not had any problems with phone calls, although I have had some problems connecting to 4G sometimes.
So, yes, as a phone it works perfectly for me.

I also use my phone for everything and haven't had any issue! for me this phone is by far the best i have used both speed and battery life! there are tickets open with sprint and the Motorola and there addressing the issue. so your not alone!
I have to reboot my phone every morning in order to not have the silent call issue. I just flashed the mr3, hopefully it fixes it.
i had a lot of issues with the "silent" calls at first but they seem less frequent now. I look forward to a full fix
Morning kcsheets. Nice to see you here, anyways, I too also use my device for calls (I have an army of kids and a wife that call me often), Sprint is aware of the issue, and no telling when, but it is software related that would need a patch.
Just waiting for that now.
I use my device for everything as I have a demanding job as a technician, but I currently haven't had this issue at all.
I've also never had any problems with the phone freezing or whatever on calls. So far the only time it has froze up on me was yesterday, the phone crashed and rebooted.
I have never had any issues like these. Works perfect for me. Best phone that actually has awesome call quality and awesome speaker quality of any Sprint smartphone. I hate to hear some people are having issues like the OP stated. Sort of hard to believe actually because I've had 0 issues since I've had mine.
I've had one reboot, that's it. No other issues with 2 different Photons. I returned my first one (power button was offset and jiggly, I'm rather picky)...the 2nd Photon is solid in every way. Got both from Sprint.

I haven't had any silent call issues, phone freezes, or random shut offs. My MoPho works great and this is the best phone I've had so far!!
No phone problems here.....actually no problems thus far
Sent from my MB855 using XDA Premium App
I'm coming from a Blackberry curve (an old one) and the MoPho phone itself is waaaaay better as a phone. The speaker is much clearer and people on the other end say they hear me better.
However, I switched to Sprint from Verizon and the reception is not as good so there's that. Not the phone's fault though.
No problems with calls - yet, but I've had the phone for less than a week and not made many calls. I have had to reboot after installing some apps but I guess that's to be expected.

Mine came from a Sprint store and yes, I've had all but the phone shut off happen to me. I've gotten into the habit of powering completely down once a day to clear out the bugs.
Overall, the phone is exceptional so this quirk/glitch isn't compelling for me to return the phone and hopefully a fix is eminent.
I have had calls that when answered I could not hear the person on the other line, nor could I make calls and hear anything even when it showed a connection. I had to reboot to clear this issue.
So I went into my local Sprint store today and I asked if Sprint was aware of certain issues with the Photon. I know most of the techs there and they checked their internal report list. From what I read on their computer there are known issues that are currently being resolved by Motorola and Sprint. They expect to have an update to correct several issues, the major issue being the silent phone call bug. I asked when the update would be released and they said it was within the month.
At least they are working on issues!
What's up with that? Even with headphones plugged in the notification sounds go through the external speaker?
Silliness.
Buuuuuuump no one?

I would like to know the answer to this as well, my previous HTC when headphones are plugged in all sounds including notifications went through them, yet the S3 sends notifications to the external speaker, surely this is a bug?
It's absurd and not the only Samsung phone that does it. The thing that strikes me as odd is there aren't many people that seem to care about it. Google searches hardly brings up **** and this thread has gotten like 60 views but 1 response...which is you with the same question.

That's ok, but when your phone is in your pocket how do you know if you have a text/email unless you put it on vibrate?
On the top screen of your phone you will see a small i which stands for notification, i dont know whats it called but the settings menu on top of your phone drag it down and click notifications then the letter i will disappear now all notifications will alert you normally via sound like call and texts.

oops i meant i put it to vibrate. however if u do this there will be a slight pause in the music when a notification comes in(i think it only applies to certain functions like sms. whatsapp nofs dont pause my music)
I can't believe no one cares about this... I still want to hear my notifications over my headphones... Work email, personal email, specific ringtones for individual calls and texts... the list goes on. I've owned Mostly HTC, but even my Palm Pre and older Sanyo phones were smart enough to mute the external speaker when connecting headphones.
Bizarre.
I don't know if this has been explained prior to my response. Notifications work fine over blue tooth.

The issue was never Bluetooth. The problem is, you can have you headphones plugged in while sitting in the library, and if you get a notification, it will blast the entire room. Similarly, if you are in your car, the notifications don't make it to your aux port, and also, if you use the aux port, Bluetooth will not play the audio simultaneously. That's crap. On CM-based ROMs this works just fine. Definitely not a hardware issue. Sure sucks for people who use hands free kits in their cars
Same issue here with the external speaker not being muted when earphones plugged in, and unlike previous comments, issue persists when using bluetooth. Currently using Omega v32.1.
This problem affects my Galaxy Note 2 as well. Wow. How does no one else care about this? I don't understand why people would put their phone on silent just because they are listening to music. CM10 sort of fixed this issue on my GS3, but I can't use that on the gn2 because of all the custom stylus integration.
It's definitely an android thing and I can't believe that in almost 2 years since it's been logged, no traction appears to have been made.
Did a quick search through the developer forums to see if anyone has made a mod, but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know, if one the many talented developers on XDA, have done anything here?
EDIT: Turns out there is an app already out there to solve this, but interesting that it's not standard in the OS.

You could try SoundAbout, but as ScrapMaker states, it may cause issues with the sound cutting in/out using just the earpiece.
I wasn't going to try using it, but have over the last few days and it seems to work ok for me. Give it a go and see if it works (as I haven't been able to find anything else on the play store yet)...
I just got the galaxy note 2 yestersay and noticed the headphine issue today while working on the motorcycle. With the headohines on I can't hear the phone ring or notificationsn. what I hear instead is the music I'm listening to go mute the length of the ringing while anyone around me hears my ringing which comes off a little rude on my part and a bit annoying that it doesn't just ring through the headset.
I'm going over the settings and searching the Web like crazy but not finding an actual solution just work arounds about muting the ringer and/our putting it on vibe, neither of which is what I'm wanting or works for me.
I got an AT&T HTC One X+ about a week ago and I have had this problem since the minute I opened the box. When I am on a call and am using the earpiece (not speakerphone), the person on the other end of the line cannot hear me. All he/she can hear is background noise and garbles. However, when I switch the phone to speakerphone, the issue is gone. I tested out the microphone through the video camera and voice recorder too and both work fine. Anyone know what's going on? A good way to test this out is to call another phone, leave a voicemail message, and listen to the message. Thanks in advance.
Its not a problem.
Just return the thing and get a replacement. Don't waste anytime, just do it.

Hi...
I got a xperia z2 prototye. model 6503.
Everything is working fine, except the call quality. i can hear and understand very well, but the other person has echoes, and very bad sound..
When I use a heatset, there is no problem. and it is almost good, when I put the phone on the table, with speaker on. The problem is worst, when I hold the phone on my ear..
Is it a hard- or software related problem?
I´m now on 17.1.A.2.55
THX
Since others have not complained about this issue, it looks like a hardware issue. Maybe your microphone is faulty?
Take it to Sony and get it checked.
I did some voice recording, and it is brilliant.
Try turning off the noise cancellation feature during calls, and see if there's a difference.
Well it's a prototype so who knows...

I first became concerned when I recorded an outgoing message for the phone's default answering machine...As a test I download a voice recording app that let me turn off noise suppression/cancellation.
It brought it from unusable to usable, still not good. But I think your suggestion is a good one, I just don't see why a software tweak improves on something that seems more like a hardware problem. I say that because I can't find a single thing on the web aside from these two posts stating any concerns about it.
This is killing me...turning off noise cancellation only improves the quality in that particular app. Turning it off in the Call settings didn't change anything. I can't record an acceptable answering machine greeting no matter what I do.
EDIT- I also have unlocked my bootloader and thusly lost my DRM Keys... OP has a prototype Z2, perhaps something there?
Same problem here, and mine is not a proto
my nephew and my gf got Z2 too, and same problem...
we hear wel, they can't hear us clearly
Considering that the quality of sound that comes out of the speakers when we hear music, it sure is software problem! In Xperia Z was the same thing in its release!
non proto:
when I'm on earpiece, the caller will always be breaking up. I'll have to disconnect and return the call before everything's crispy again. though there are times they'll complain of not hearing me properly. turning off the "background noise" option seems to help but they'll tell me it's noisy as fuuu.
lol hoping for a software fix I guess.

First time I've seen my problem described to the letter. It's especially bad when I hold the phone with my chin and no hands. I turned off noise cancelation under phone settings and people stopped complaining however a few people complained of an echo... Lose, lose. Btw, I'm rooted with a custom ROM and nothing has changed.

Maybe people should report this to Sony as I don't get any complaints from the receiving end so far. My only complaint is the sound quality of the voice in the earpiece is not rich. The voice lacks low frequency.

On my handset I constantly have hissing noises during a call and voice breaking up intermittently, but not when I'm on speaker or headphones then it's all crystal clear.
Mine is 14W16 and I've already had it replaced but the problem is still there (replacement device also 14W16).
Does anyone else experience this?
I've already disabled/enabled microphone noise suppression and speaker voice enhancement, but to no effect.
EDIT: My third device (also 14W16) still has this problem, maybe a faulty batch or is it probably a software problem?
EDIT2: Seems to be a software related problem. I have flashed the new 17.1.1.A.0.402 rom and it's almost perfect now.
It seems like a recurring problem...
Hi Guys,
Here's my post on Xperia Care (3 threads dealing with this specific issue):
"I've had the exact same issues since my very first call. I am pretty sure it is a hardware issue and not software or use-related (my phone has never been in contact with water, the issue started in an "out-of-the-box" context and ALL the people I've had over the phone guessed that I changed for a new one just because they could not hear me as clearly as with my former HTC HD2 which I'm starting to deeply regret for this basic use of calling for a phone!).
Searching over the web and through this forum, you can find many people complaining about this problem and saying that a standard exchange did not solve it: would it be a batch problem?? For info, mine is a simlock-free purple model bought in Germany.
Another thing, using noise cancellation is even worse according to my callees so I guess I'll never use this feature, then... All details provided by you guys are described by my friends when I have them on the phone: hissing, hearing me in the distance (muffled sound), hearing their voice in echo (bad Z2 speaker=>mic interaction), vibration (resonance/vibration due to the phone design itself??), hearing like intermittent wind gusts and very very bad sound when I hold the phone between my cheek and shoulder...
As if this would not be bad enough, now the camera application does not record sound anymore when filming (it used to be OK before updating to newer version through PC Companion). Instead of proper sound you hear constant hissing. After a lot of tests I've realised that it now uses the noise cancellation mic instead of the primary one. When running a mic test through Xperia diagnostics menu you can hear back that hissing and no sound at all. Doing the same test through the *#*#7378423#*#* menu gives a different result since I can hear the recording perfectly well (because it is using primary microphone)."
After rebooting my phone, the secondary mic is now working. This leaves me very puzzled now: would it be a software issue in he end??
I'm phoning French Xperia Car hotline tomorrow, keep you posted.
Cheers

Any update on this? I just got this phone for my fiancé and it seems that she's having the same issue. I can't hear well.
Must have something to do with positioning the mic and how far it is from the mouth. More than a design problem than a hardware one methinks.

Hi SooSpecial,
Xperia Care had no explanation about this; they advised me to file a standard exchange procedure with the seller, which I did.
I'm now waiting for my new device, hoping I won't have the same problem anymore.
If not, I would ask for a refund and go for a G3 instead. That would be a pity because I really like the Z2.
I'd advise you to have your girlfriend's handset changed asap, otherwise you would have to go for a repair procedure w/ Sony, which may take approx. 1 month, leaving you without any replacement smartphone if it was a simlock-free one...
FYI, this problem has also been reported on Xperia Care Forum in 3 threads on Frandroid (french forum) and on some customer reviews on Amazon (as far as I know).
Good luck with that
