Rumors of a Google Edition G2. - G2 General

There are rumors circling about a GE of the G2 that packs 3gb of ram and will likely launch with 4.4 around Dec. What are your thoughts on this rumor? Personally I hope that it is true as it would be awesome to have a phone with the G2's specs running stock android.
Original story:http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2013/10/11/lg-g2-google-edition-rumour-suggests-more-power/

It would be a good thing because I think that it will be relatively easy to flash the Google Edition ROMs on existing handsets (like it is the case with the Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Editons).
But I don't buy the 3GB of RAM rumor...Kit Kat should reduce the memory footprint with the new Linux kernel, the 3GB should not be needed for some time, like 3 years from now. Heck, you can run Windows 8.1 on 2GB RAM (and even on 1GB) with no hiccups whatsoever...why would so much RAM be needed for a handset

Well I really wouldn't mind lg hi if could start with 1.2 to 1.4 the ram free. But I loath aosp now and I came from OG droid and GNex

No way in hell they will up the specs. If they do that would be a **** move towards the ALREADY LG G2 Owners like me and allot of other people.
Mark my words if they do I wont buy another smartphone from them again unless its a Google Edition when/if they do. Hate to be a downer, but I think that isn't sending a positive message out to their brand enthusiast crowd base. I expect the same phone to be released along side with the new nexus because they virtually have the same internals I'm guessing. That makes more sense, Imagine... the waterfall of ROMs we can flash.... I'm addicted

Not sure they would, a G2 with Play OS could dig into Nexus 5 sales, and vice versa. I don't see LG wanting to dig into their own sales like that.

I can see why you'd say that but the nexus is Google's baby not LG's. I don't think LG would mind selling more G2 phones whether it was stock or GE

I'm sure they'd love to dig into N5 sales with a G2 GPE. They probably make more money selling their branded device than making them for google.

Android and windows handle memory management in completely different ways. You cannot compare the RAM in windows to the RAM in Android, apples and hot dogs

This sounds like a stupid rumor to me. Why would LG want to cannibalize their own sales of the Nexus 5?
It makes absolutely no sense from a business standpoint, so I call bogus on this rumor.

Good move if it happens. Same hardware different markets. Doesn't cost them anything extra to make. Better for economic of scale and more profit.

It does if your selling a lower spec phone for 299- 399 as opposed to 599-699 for a higher spec phone. Its why we have lower end phone and high end phones. Lg has already made its money from the nexus. Wouldn't surprise me if Google is losing money to sell these phones for so cheap. And lg makes profit because Google has to buy them as they are the only retailer.

My only question is if they'll have a CDMA version on Verizon. I switched to Verizon from ATT because of poor signal and lack of 3G in my area. T-Mobile is even worse. Verizon is by far the best carrier in my area. If they are only releasing a GSM version, I guess I'll be skipping this one.

No difference in specs? way better screen, twice the RAM, better camera, newer gen processor. Specs are a lot better. The kicker will be whether anyone will dev for it. Since it will be stock android, it should run great out of the box, without LG being able to jack it up.
Agreed with everything except wondering if devs will dev for it. Its a nexus so that's a guarantee.

Non-expandable storage is absolutely fatal. If it had 32gb fixed, I could deal with it, but 8gb and 16gb? Sod off. Nice specs, though. If it has a fixed battery that's also a major negative. Need to see more companies taking the maxx approach: make a thin phone, then use the space savings for a huge battery.
What are your thoughts now that we have an official announcement? For me, I wasn't planning on getting this Nexus anyway, and seeing no LTE makes me glad that I'm not in a position to get it this year.
I was heavily upset with hearing that it's currently only a GSM/HSPA+ device..... I am totally down for getting one, if they make a CDMA/LTE version but it's so not worth switching to Tmobile or AT&T... I still have unltd data on vzw
If it had options like 32 or 64 gb I could deal with the non removable battery and lack of lte if i was on tmobile or something.

I don't know if you are paying attention to the development forum but they have clockwork tethered n on the device and they are actively working on an unlock n r very close.
Development is not everything !
NEVER buy a phone for what it 'might' do in the future. Buy it for what it can do now.
If custom roms are important to you, don't get this phone right now. Get an S3 or One X.
If a really good oem experience is OK for you, and root is good enough, then look no further! I think this is an awesome phone.
But until proven otherwise, assume that the bootloader will never be unlocked. It might be, but if that is critical to you, then you should be buying a phone that can do that today.
Each to their own.

Why buy those when the N4 is for sale as I type this note. You will not only get the custom ROM's but the quickest update to the latest releases of Andriod.

This phone is an animal. And even now, the test units for the N4 have been updated with the build that will be on the shipped units and in benchmarks and real world testing it doesn't hold a candle to this phone. That of course poses a couple of questions like why is vanilla android not as fast or faster than the build on the optimus g if the hardware is so similar? And why buy the n4 for faster access to updates if those updates don't bring it up to the same performance level as the Optimus G?
Wireless charging is the only feature I wish we had and hey, I can live without that. So IMO this phone is superior and will be even more so if/when the developers here work there magic and get passes the locked bootloader. So I would suggest sticking around.

While I agree that LTE and expandable storage are important, if lack of sufficient progress towards boot loader unlock, in 5 days, would drive you to return the device, for one that will get customer ROMs, getting an S3 which from what I read is about to lose it's dev support due to Samsung policies (devs are tired of doing inefficient, cumbersome work arounds that shouldn't be necessary) isn't a good option, even if you got LTE everywhere you went and could expand storage to 2 TB. The One x has it's drawbacks too.
Even stock unrooted, this thing is a monster in terms of what I'm seeing it do. I may still trade it in for the One X+ at the end of this week, but if I don't I certainly can't find fault with it yet. If I can survive a Droid Bionic with utter lack of Dev support (for good reasons, obviously), the LG OG will be a snap!

The other thing you aren't understanding is the Tegra 3 only supports single channel memory, so that one gig is much slower than our 2gb of dual channel memory.

Pros: screen, best processor, micro SD slot, everything else I don't list as a con
Con: ..... I don't really consider these things bad at all but they are not the best. Battery is good for me. Camera takes good pictures for a smartphone. Its overheated like three times not really a big deal and I've had it since the beginning of December when I bought it for 200$
The combination of the amazing processor, plentiful ram, display( quality and size) , and the inclusion of a micro sd are its main points.
Yes this phone is highly underated and cheaper and still the phone i would go out and purchase today

Well in my opinion it's the most underrated phone on the market. Fast, well designed very mild LG skin(I use Nova so that takes care of that for me) and a nice sleek design even though I have it cased up due to work.
This is the third LG phone I've owned and the best device by them by far. Although I liked the other two I owned. Coming from the HTC One X and I don't miss that phone at all, nice device but dev unfriendly and HTC just isn't my thimg with their horrible Sense junk.
Buy it for the price you won't regret it imo. The dev community is a nice solid group as well.

Well I personally haven't had the overheating issue and like I said I rock a case because of work. Then again even though I have overclocked ever other phone I've owned, I just don't see a need to with this phone. I've also noticed very few people with the issue. If it was an epidemic I'm sure I would have noticed more since I seem to practically live on XDA, lol. Between here and the Note 10.1, One X and Atrix HD forums.
What's annoying about the phone is that sometimes you cannot put the brightness all the way up. Also camera is not so hot. Great phone overall and happy i have it (first android phone). With decent use my phone lasts about 10-12 hours.
If you have a decent phone right now I would just be patient and see if you like any of the 5 inch 1080p phones coming out (and possibly Galaxy S4). The screen "should" be superior, we won't know until we see it in hand comparing but another thing would be that the new phones will have a bigger battery (optimus pro g if in the USA will have a 3300 battery). If you are fine rooting etc than this phone will be fine but if not maybe the newer phones would be best as it would come with Jelly Bean and more than likely come out with 1-2 more updates (just pure speculation on my part)...whereas this phone will prob get Jelly Bean and that is it- however JB or not this phone runs very smooth and quick on ICS.
If you decide on this phone you will definitely be happy with it, especially at 50 bucks! Hell the Optimus G for Sprint is buy one get one free!
I think one of the reasons this phone is so far under the radar is due to the Nexus 4 stealing it's thunder. The OG and N4 have all the same "guts" but the N4 gets all the press due to having "pure android" and being first in line for all OS updates. That is all well and good, but I couldn't stomach being restricted to 16GB (11 usable) of storage. Not when I can buy a 64GB microSD card for only $40 and store all my media that I like to have on hand. Don't trust the cloud...
The OG also has LTE. That's not important to me since I'm on a Straight Talk plan, but it is a nice bonus feature for most people.
So as long as you're comfortable waiting for the devs here to keep you on the latest and greatest software, this phone IMHO is better than the Nexus 4, which most reviewers are in love with.
Thanks for the great feedback everyone. I was indeed comparing this to the Nexus 4, but this has LTE and N4 does not. However, i was also debating whether or not i wanted to wait for the 5 inch 1080ps instead because well, I like a big screen.

My personal opinion is that the phones are getting too big. I played around with the Note and Note 2 to get a feel for the size, and I just didn't care for it. I need a phone. Not a phablet and that's what I see it turning into at that size.
I agree. Phones are getting way too large, the Note and Note 2 are way too large for my taste and hands for that matter. I have a Note 10.1 tablet and love it so why do I need a bigger phone? Just my opinion as I know phablet users who love it.

Only real complaints I have are the speaker volume (fixed with the Sony enhancement) and the camera isn't that great (which doesn't bother me too much).
Also, the lack of updates. It doesn't effect me since I'm a flashoholic and will flash ROMs anyway, but still... It's more the principle of the matter. LG sucks so much with the updating and this phone should have had JB upon release.
What ever, I want AOKP and CM anyway!

Its definitely underrated. There isnt any major marketing of this phone, and to be honest people dont really trust LG because of the lack of support and updates. But they did a terrific job with the optimus g, every review that i read/watch praises this phone, how crazy fast it is. Now lg needs to support it and build some momentum to carry it over the optimus g pro.

What do you guys think? Galaxy S4 Google Edition.

Why not just wait till the note3? Gs4 isn't worth it...

I'm asking for your opinion on the device with Stock Android Experience.
Not asking if I should buy it or not.
They would have to use lower spec parts to fit with the Nexus Line prices.
Edit: Nvm its offering at $650. WOW!

I like it I hope Samsung and other manufacture's start to offer it. I'd love the next Samsung or htc device I by to be pure android. No touchwiz or sense sounds great

I agree. It would be really nice to finally see these great phones running aosp without the need for a custom rom.
Hopefully, this one is going to come to Canada eventually...
Frankly I think it is good that they are doing this but I would rather have a nexus 5.
I'm hoping for nexus 4 prices with
2.3GHz processor
2+GB RAM
5.3 inch FHD Screen
32GB storage
Metal build
Key lime pie
Multi window
Then and only then will i replace my nexus 4. Dont really care about fhd though and the s4 is no faster than my OCed nexus 4
It will be incredible if google goes with the Exynos 5 Octa
Will this come with other features from the original s4?? Not the touch wiz but other stuff

That's a good question. There isn't much at this moment but I hope it does.

I like the idea, but not the price (and based on the audience reaction...neither did they). I mean you can get an unlocked HTC One for around $560ish. From there, one could root/ROM it and be good to go. Now if the price drops to say $500 or less, I'd be willing to shell out the cash. Which I hope the price point will change. This is a great start to offering a bloat free device, without having to root/ROM it. This would be great if other manufacturers followed suit.
Good move nonetheless!
A true Nexus Samsung phone would be the only way I'd buy another Samsung phone. Getting rid of Touchwiz is easy, but I just can't deal with the lagging of releasing updates.
Boo... too expensive, too mainstream, to dang normal. Optimus g pro version would be nice that's bad ass or version of Sony z... both would be better all around and could be at $500 Google price. I was so disappointed! I just returned my nexus 4 thinking they were going to release something better. I'll stick with my note!!

G2 Family.

Took me 2 months but I convinced my wife and my 15 year old that the G2 was the way to go. So there are now 3 of them in our house now lol.

I have been trying to talk my wife into getting one. I need to get her away from ios since I'm her tech support. That os drives my crazy.

Ya I hate everything Apple lol. That's what my family used also until recently. It's an adjustment for them coming off ios but for the better for sure.

It's hard to convince people away from Apple and Samsung. Can't understand how people can't like the G2...although it's not perfect, it's pure amazing.

Ya only way I'll trade this out will be for the G3. Rumored 8 core processor and 3 gig ram. I'm already sold lol. Slightly larger screen also.
Just hope they refine the stock firmware.

It all comes down to marketing. Samsung did a good job in this & LG didn't. A waste that an amazing phone like this never given a chance to fight.

Ya I agree with that. But that actually makes the G2 even more of a major contender in my eyes because it's popularity is still growing regardless.
Couple that with Samsung's basically failed watch campanion promotions. And the rumored improvements to come on the G3. And I think LG has the foundation for an epic device long term. As long as they clean up the software.

Yep pretty sexy. No shiny back plate to lol. Should give the Note 3 a run for its money. Even though I think the G2 has it beat in every aspect except screen size.

Screen size is already going a little too far. Plz stop asking for bigger screens
I wish flagships stop at 5 inch screen and leave the bigger size for phablets.

I agree with that also. The screen is plenty big. If I want a bigger screen I'll just use a 7/10 inch tablet. Bigger screen on a phone just isn't practical in my opinion and intrusive in most cases.

My dad has a G Flex and my mom has a Nexus 5 so in a way we're sort of a G2 family.
But then my sister's the black sheep with a Moto X.

Have you tried out the Vutalk feature yet? It seems cool/fun but I don't know anyone else with an LG phone, unfortunately, so I can't test it out myself.
Other than the slippery back, easy-to-scratch screen, mediocre speakers, and lack of cute aftermarket cases, I LOVE the G2. The Knock On feature and battery life are so damn amazing. Every phone should implement Knock On!
I have super high expectations for the G3 after being wowed by so many of the G2's features. The "delightful discoveries" page is great!

I have had the G2 since mid December. I gave my wife my old S2 skyrocket and sold a HTC one x I used as well. She loves my g2 and how stable it is..I offered to buy her a Optimus G or G pro off eBay but I can't get her off her skyrocket. She said when she needs another phone she will for sure want a lg because of the UI.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk
We bought G2's the day after it launched in Canada. And 1 S4 which is being used as a toy by my youngest. I have a MacBook which I love, and an iPhone 4 which I loved. I was all set on getting the entire family on iPhones by the end of last year. And then the unthinkable happened: at my daughter's request I started looking at Androids. At first I was 100% opposed. But Apple's lacklustre iPhone 5x announcement and their refusal to make a bigger screen phone sold me on Android. And now I would laugh in the face of any offer to switch back to iPhone. The G2 has been the best phone on the market since it came out.

Ya family is for sure not regretting switching from iPhone to the G2. I'm just hoping the G3 is going to live up to the rumors or exceed them. I really don't plan on switching phone brands in the future. Or is anyone in our house lol.

My last two phones were Samsung...never again. I went to get my G2 on Friday, the Verizon store was sold out and so were all the stores in the area. The sales rep ( a family friend) just ordered it online for me and should arrive Monday.
$99 for a 32 gig phone with these monster specs? Yes please!
