I want to flash the Googy Max 175 Kernel but I'm a bit uncertain because of my current installation. I have Liquid Smooth JB 4.3 and 3.0.64 CM kernel and CyanogenMod touch recovery. I like my touch-recovery.
Do I simply flash the Googy with Odin? I guess that will destroy my CyanogenMod recovery?
Can I use Odin to backup my existing Kernel?
My CM kernel doesn't give me access to overclocking so this is the main reason for wanting to flash Googy.

You don't need to backup your old kernel. In addition googy is only a kernel and not a recovery, hence you will keep yours.

Thanks. So I just flash it with Odin using the PDA button and the same tick-boxes I used when I originally rooted phone?
Would be nice if there was an app that could flash it via the phone.
You need to read the basic faqs and guides before flashing not after you have bricked your phone .

And therein lies the problem. How to find clear and concise facts for specific tasks without having to travel many hours across the internet piecing together fragments of information.
I've already learned quite a bit over 2 weeks, rooting, backing up rom, recovery but guides are generally fragmented and information all over the place.

Thanks. Useful guides there including a breakdown of the memory space.
There's one section where they say that all roms come with kernel so if you want a specific kernel you need to flash it again after you install the rom. I get that and that's the position I'm at. I have Liquid Smooth and I want to flash a kernel that allows overclock. Which also begs the question... If ALL ROMS come with Kernel... why doesn't the Liquid Smooth have Kernel that allows overclock? Liquid Smooth has the Performance section showing clocks and cpu modes but I can't change the actual cpu speeds. They stay on automatic. Can't adjust the sliders.
So for a noob this is where confusion sets in....
If all custom roms include Kernel... why doesn't a rom with overclocking come with overclocking kernel?
I need a Siyah kernel or variant to overclock so why doesn't Liquid Smooth have that Kernel?
I have a Googy175 kernel CWM.zip .... There is no guide that explains how to install it. I read that zip files must be installed via clockworkmod recovery... well I can do that if I know that this googy can be installed via recovery...
I read that Odin only works with tar files and googy isn't a tar.
Noob questions and as great as the guide is for general understanding of it all... it doesn't answer my specific questions.

Why should it its up to the dev what they build you would need to ask the dev why .
Devs build as they want to build a rom and options may be included in an installer or to be flashed after its users choice .

Basics flash via recovery the same as any CWM zip as per the faqs and guides
Usually there are installation instructions in every kernel guide on how to install them and what to take care of.

1. At the moment what is the best kernel for performance, stability and good battery life while being secure (I don't want the triangle during boot) and supporting CWM?

You've been on the forums since 2007 and you still don't know where you should post a question? This is Android Development not Question. Theres different sub-forum for a reason.
1) At the moment Tegrak would be the best performance since your able to control your GPU clock speed as well as overclocking the CPU. The best battery life would (personal preference) be Cognition own kernal built for his own ROM.
To get rid of the triangle flash it using CWMManager (APK), you just get the zImage out of the kernal file put it on your sd card go to CWMManager app and select flash kernal then select zImage. Although you first would have to Flash a custom-kernal with CWM to flash a rom, use odin to flash stock kernal and then use CWMManager to flash the kernal, this will get rid of the annoying triangle.

I would recommend that you use the cf-root kernels they are quit good.
As far as I know are there at the moment no special kernels with uv or other cool features. Most of them are quite similar.
I try at the moment the Jame Bond kernel because I know this one from the Nexus S but just flashed 5 min ago so can't give any informations.
Because of the triangle when you flashed the cf-root kernel then boot once with it
go back to download mode and flash the stock kernel of your choice.
I don't know if it works with other kernels but fore sure with cf.
The best thing would be if you don't care about the triangle is too much work if you always try to remove it after you flashed something.

The root task is done by both of the kernels indeed. But:
If you just want to root your device CF-Root will do the thing.
Siyah or Siyah related kernels (DorimanX Kernel for example) and some others are more advanced kernels that
give you the ability to adjust some settings through an app (STweaks) that is installed with the kernel.

The best way to find out what you can do with the kernels is to read their threads.
It's to much to explain. Just as an example: Change CPU frequency and volting, enable different setting profiles for
improved battery life and much more.
The kernel I like most is DorimanX but you have to be more experienced because of a lot of different options.
Siyah, which is the base of the DorimanX, is more compact with the settings and easier to learn.
No matter what kernel you use, make sure your rom is supported. (Stock or Custom, AOKP / CM Base?)

If you just want to flash a kernel because you want to get root and install a custom rom than CF-Root is the best thing.
Every custom rom comes with it's own kernel that fits. Only if you want to get an advanced kernel you may flash one of these:
DorimanX or
Siyah vsync v4/5
in their modified versions for CM and AOKP based roms.
Do NOT flash these kernels as long as you are on a Stock based rom. It won't boot then.
Make sure you know how to install custom roms! Mostly described in the rom threads itself.
So you steps should be:

Everything you need is explained here step by step. Won't take you that long to read through it think
If you don't know the difference between Stock and Custom, just use the forum search.
And I figured out that it's better to root via Siyah for you with this one Siyah for stock rom
For titanium i got no advice for you because I'm not experienced with it. But there should be some threads guiding you through.

What you have to do is to flash this kernel via Odin Odin
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select .tar file you've downloaded (Siyah in this case)
- Put your phone in download mode (google it if you dno't know how to)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
after this steps your phone is rooted and then you can install your custom firmware.

if you flash the Siyah kernel it automatically installs the a recovery. there is no need to install it separately.
you just have to download the zip file for your custom rom (Jelly Beer 4.18 in your case) and copy it to your external sd card.

hallo im also new to rooting but flashed cm10.1 yesterday with root and can share what i did.
i also got i9300 nordic version of the s3. and downloaded some files
odin 3.07
cfroot 3.64
cm10.1
gapps from 03-2013
i resettet my phone and enabled USB debugging and put the phone in download mode and startet up odin and made sure its connected and loaded cfroot.tar and flashed and the phone rebootet itself and installed the ness. apps for rooting. then i bootet up in recovery manager and went to install from sdcard and installed cm10.1 and then gapps and then did factory reset and dalvik wipe and rebootet and it bootet up CM10.1 and deleted /0 folder on the phone which was empty folder from previous touchwiz samsung rom
and yes there are risks but i did this 2 times. tw to cm10 and then back again but everything went problem free. so the risk ppl are talking about is mostly likely cuz some broke and if u mess up it breaks. so it can happen.
q1; when u flash cfroot the bootloader changed and it changes counter from 0 to 1.
q2: when u flash stock back with odin it flashes rom and bootloader/recovery but counter is the same but can be fixed easily. ( did it myself between my 2 flashes so when i flashed back to CM10 it still was on 1
q3: i think its everything thats risky. dont think root and rom flashing are more risky than others
q4: dont know what u mean exactly. i didnt mess with kernals. CM10.1 has a good one i think.
q5: dont either
q6: i dont have any yelly triagle on my cfroot+cm10.1. theres a lille read thing in the left corner like 2mm long that shows u got flashed.

For kernels that support both go here or here. At the moment Siyah or Goggy Max are the people's choices I assume.

Any flashing involves risk from almost no risk to a much bigger risk for those that dont read the basics and follow instructions .

1. You can flash boooader separately or when you flash stock roms. (I can be wrong but this is what I know)
2. I never done that but yes for first two, not sure about flash counter, you may still have to clear them with TA first.
3. As above answer, it's always risky to do stuff without proper knowledge and no guarantees even after proper knowledge but mostly no.
4. Yes.
5. Kernels are essential part of your phone and they are compatible with your os version only and also ur phone model. So if a kernel is for s3 4.2.2, you can't flash it over to amy other model or os version. Yes for second part.
6. No. Triangle away may remove your flashing counter but as long as you have custom anything and your rom status is modified that triangle will be there.

Siyah supports both cm and stock. Yes, you cam flash cm over stock or siyah kernel.
You have to flash your kernel again after every rom flash.

As long as the rom comes with a kernel, which is the normal base, you have to flash the kernel again. Usually you can do this direct from recovery before the full reboot.
As long as the kernel supports your rom type (see each kernel's thread for it), you should be fine as long as you follow the instructions.

bootloader no clue, I never touched it, too dangerous to mess up stuff.
for flashing googy, usually you do it in CWM or via Odin. Check out the thread and read the instructions. Syiah's thread also got a huge amount of guides in the first couple of posts and they should be valid somehow for Googy as well as it is based on Siyah.

Please do not start messing with bootloaders .
Logic says read the instructions for the kernel you want to flash .
Its a CWM file and flashed via recovery .
You really should bother yourself to read the basic faqs and guide .

The bootloader isn't modified. The bootloader *shows* modified by reading other data.

well, i've searched a lot about kernels in different threads, but didn't find any detailed and comprehensive information about kernels.
i rooted my SGSII with Odin through a guide which installed Siyah-s2-v6.0b4.tar kernel and CWM based recovery on my phone.
i flashed RootBox-JB-i9100-V4.2 ROM and now have 3.0.64-CM-g32f12dd kernel.
Before i flashed a custom ROM i got stweaks working, and after i flashed rootbox i recieve a message:"no kernel support" on stweaks.
This is leading to my first question- does my kernel change when i use different ROMs?
now i want to try and change my kernel to one who is supported by stweaks and has touch CWM and works with RootBox, but i'm not sure how to flash kernels.
This is leading to my second question- can anyone describe the whole procedure of how to change kernels on SGSII?

There's nothing to describe. Custom kernels are flashed in CWRecovery mostly (some have Odin flashable versions as well). Always follow the exact flashing instructions for the kernel in question which are always on the first page of the thread devoted to the kernel in whichever development section, and are always very clear/simple to follow.
Only some kernels like Siyah or DorimanX support STweaks.Look up here on S2 forums in the Android Development section for kernelsThere are some others that have STweaks support.Also,.don't flash kernels made for Sammy ROMs.If you wanna flash DorimanX, then flash 9.39, not 8.39.

Yes, if the ROM comes bundled with its own kernel(s). :good:

Yes.. The ROM ZIP usually contains Rom+kernel+modem combination

1.Just go the kernel thread you want to use.(Mind that you cant use siyah with Rootbox). Search for a kernel which supports 4.2.2 (eg. Dorimanx 9.x) and download the CWM Flashable zip in the thread.
2.Download Hawker Paul`s Kernel Cleaning Script
3.Flash Hawker Paul`s Kernel Cleaning Script first trhu CWM
4.Then Flash the Kernel ZIP

in need a bit of help here, am planning on getting a new S3 I9300 tomorrow, as i currently own
a galaxy note N7000 and a bit of a flashaholic.
1st thing i'll be doing is rooting which seems quite straightforward. Now when it comes to flashing roms on the GN1
i flash a kernel (which includes recovery), but with the S3 im a bit un-sure, from what ive read you have to flash seperatly
am i right?
I also like to switch between touchwizz and cm/aosp, (currently using HellyBean 4.3 rom) on the note.
Currently on the note if i want a cm rom i flash a cm kernel (do the wipes) and flash the rom. If i want a touchwizz rom
i flash Philz kernel (do the wipes) and flash the rom.
On the S3 does it matter which kernel/recovery i use to flash either or does it have to be specific to the rom im going to flash?
Been reading a lot on here but most roms say be on a working CWM recovery but not sure which.

Yeah, cheers mate i've already read that and its the 1st thing i did on my GN1, its just im a bit confused about
which kernel & recovery its safe to flash cm on and which i can use to flash touchwizz. Nowhere makes it clear
Like i said earlier i used Philz kernel/recovery for touchwizz on my note and cm kernel/recovery for aosp roms.
But here it seems you have seperate. So basically can i use philz recovery to flash either cm or touchwizz?

Yes u can use philz recovery if u want to flash any custom rom including cm too

Thanks for that. I think ive just got my head around this, the kernel wont really matter cos the new rom will flash its own kernel, am i correct?

Unlike older galaxy / note devices, the s3 has a recovery partition, similar to other android phones. The s2 and note did not, so recovery had to be built in to the kernel.
Every rom comes with a kernel (can't work without one). Its completely independent of recovery. You can use whatever recovery or kernel you like without impacting the other. This is all covered in the "understanding the basics before rooting" thread linked earlier
