I just upgraded my Nexus 4 to an HTC One, and I have only one complaint. On the other, when listening to music (in my case with Poweramp), a quick double tap of the wired headset button would skip songs. On the HTC One it appears to dial the last person I spoke to.
It's hard to break the habit of trying to skip songs with this button, and annoying if I have to take my phone out of the sleeve and unlock it every time.
Does anyone know if there's a way to change this? Poweramp has this Priority thing which can't prevent the phone from dialing everytime I try to skip a song, so I'm a little lost here..
I'm using the stock headset and I've tried with others and got the same.
Is there any option which I can disable and I'm not seeing?
Thanks in advance.

Sure - you should be able to change it in the keyboard layout, by simply switching the keys for HEADSETHOOK and MEDIA_NEXT. In our case, this is located in /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl. HEADSETHOOK is key 226, and MEDIA_NEXT is key 163. You can switch these (IE 163 becomes HEADSETHOOK and 226 becomes MEDIA_NEXT, and it should do what you want.

That sound like a guru answer, thanks man.
I have my phone rooted, but I haven't S-OFF yet........ your method can be done with S-ON?
Thanks in advance dude.
Yea man..as long as you're rooted and running a kernel with system write protection disabled (i.e. any custom rom/kernel)
You can also try this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kober.headsetbutton&hl=en
it's what I use and it works pretty well.

Hi,
All previous iterations of android phones could be unlocked without using the touchscreen, eg. by tapping the menu button twice. Problem is that the menu button is capacitive on the Nexus. You can't press it with gloves, nor can you slide unlock the screen.
The trackball was useful because you could minimally operate apps with it, like skipping tracks in the music app..
Could it be possible to develop an alternate unlock mecanism, such as drawing a large circle using the trackball ?
I look forward to not having to take off my gloves to skip tracks when skiing
Use your nose jk it would be nice to have another way to unlock.
Or even map it to the volume button (while still requiring the slide-to-unlock) and I'd be happy as a clam. The power button is just hard to reach for some, sometimes.

...always looking out for the dwarfs of the world. very nice of you!
I'd be happy to be able at least wake up the phone with the trackball!
That would be perfect to me...i would assume its just some directory setting..does anyone know how to achieve this?

I did actually contemplate that, but my pride talked me out of doing it on a crowded ski slope.
Probably my biggest con for the phone...unlocking it requires pressing the power button. Someone please hack this!
I'm trying to find the way to wake up with the trackball, but not found
I want to group same number or contact on call log (like as Iphone) also
This is a fantastic idea. I am honestly worried about wearing out the power button. I don't find this a flaw with the nexus, but I would love the option to turning on the screen with one tap and unlocking the phone with a second tap. I know this will make a lot of people happy. can someone please do it?
i'd love a "trackball-on" feature - the g1 could be activated with every button on it.
this was good to unburden the power-button.
There is an app that doing that...Lock 2.0
rename Lock 2.0.zip to Lock 2.0.apk

It costs money, but if you buy the ICE Lockscreen (By appventive), it lets you wake up the screen with the volume rocker. Its also a good thing to have just in case you get into an accident or something happens to you.
This is a feature I have wanted to see since I received the N1 ... I would love to see a Trackball -On feature ......... almost like, I hate to say it .... but how the iphone unlocks.

Then Lock 2.0 would be ideal for you.
I have always hated how we need to press the power button to lock and unlock this thing. Makes me feel like I have an iphone. My G1 and mytouch had the power button at the bottom so it was not a problem.
If I could develop the app I would, but unfortunately I do not know how.

Edit: I just tried it. Even the trackball works!
Update: It's buggy. Doesn't work every single time. Sometimes you'll have to press Power first.
Does this prevent the phone to sleep?
i just tried lock 2.0 and i guess it does the job but its so hideous! none of the themes are formated for the N1. so the background will only reach 75% but it does allow you to turn the screen on via volume switch. if they can do this, then im sure someone else can do this too. idc if i have to pay, i just want my normal 2.1 lock screen and just be able to use the volume or trackball. someone make this happen please! if we ask enough it might just happen
Tried Lock 2.0. Its ok, seem to have some bugs. password protect is a joke. If you press the trackball to wake up, all you have to do is tap the home key and it goes home bypassing the lock screen. You can do that with or without the password protect on. I think it needs some work to be compatable with the nexus one.
Even better if someone could create something, a device, or something so that I could unless my N1 with only the power of my mind itself! thnik2unlock.apk kgo
I use "screen mode widget" from the Market
Just wondering if there's a way to change songs using the headphones you get with the s3? Or if there's an app that let's you do it?
Thanks!

if you got original headphone, then you'll find that there's 3 button..
volume up, volume down, then the "other button"..
if you press the "other button" once, the music will paused or started..
Just make sure u pressed it twice to change the song..
Check out Jays Headset Control in the Play Store.
Its meant for single button configurations, but it works perfect to with my 2 (or 3) button configuration S3 supplied earphones
(edit) note that stock works too. but the app gives more options like prev track
Ahhhh thanks guys!

I wasnt aware of that app, thanks
I couldn't get any of the marketplace apps to override the headset +/- buttons from acting as volume buttons, but have now worked out how to simply remap them to act as track controls, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28752382#post28752382

Hi everybody, I just have a question, I really hope somebody can help me, I`ve been try so hard, to make work my headphones in my rom cyanogen mod 10.2, (Atrix HD) buy they can`t change to the next track, I mean, I love music, and would like use the headphones to change to the next track, but it doesn`t work, even with headset controllers from playstore is such a shame because i have to go back, and stay with my stock rom, do you know something to fix this issue?

Thanks for answer me but, is not working, I did everything you say in that post, but I can`t make them work I see the whole Generic.kl from my original stock rom that doesn`t have problems changing to the next track o pause etc., and it is the same Generic.kl, I don`t know what is happening, is a really weird issue.
Everytime I use Poweramp and, for instance, start using the browser, eventually it turns off. I've tried playing with the settings but didn't have any luck. Is anyone having this problem or knows a solution for this?
Another niggle I'm having is related to the volume rocker being unable to change music in longpress.
Thanks in advance.
Settings, Audio Engine, Advanced Tweaks - Enable Keep Service and Audio Thread Priority too 2.
Never had that problem before with these settings..
As for volume rocker changing songs.. Volume Rocker only changes the volume afaik
My name is Optimus Prime and I send this message..
Thank you so much, the audio thread priority did the trick for me
As for the volume rocker, I used to be able to change track on my old HTC hero. Very useful when I was driving. Anyway, it's just a minor annoyance.

On the Sammy's they only change volume, though give it a couple of months and someone will have come up with a mod to enable long press to change track (just as they did on the S II).

Unfortunately, I'm also having problems again. Strangely enough, it seemed to work for a certain amount of days, guess I wasn't running that many apps aside from the browser and poweramp, so it didn't trigger this behavior.
Meanwhile I changed from stock rom to Omega 6.0, but it shouldn't it have anything to do with the problem, right?
anybody know? Perhaps some app that does it?
Basically I have to do a lot of long conference calls for work, and generally speaking you need to mute yourself when you're not talking so the line stays quiet. It is a bit awkward putting the phone down, waiting the screen to turn on and jabbing the mute button on the screen each time you want to say something quick. Being able to mute via a hardware key would therefore be extremely useful but i can't seem to figure if it's possible!
thank you

Use a headset control app, like Jays, from the Play Store, and wired headset. One of the controls is double-click of the headset button to mute/unmute. Or you can customize the button to mute/unmute depending on how you click or hold the button, or whatever.
This does not work. In call controls aren't affected while music controls can be customized . Any work around?
This is a bit old thread, but I felt the same need and made a hardware switch that does exactly what you're looking for.

Hi everyone,
I'm a bit more than a week in with the Pixel 6, coming from a phone that has an actual hardware ring/vibrate/silent switch. I miss that switch dearly.
Is there a fast way to silence the Pixel 6? I'm aware you can press the volume key, then choose the "silent" icon, but that takes some time/fiddling, and it DOESN'T SILENCE THE PHONE. Only silences notifications/rings. My old phone when silenced also silenced media, everything except alarms.
Invariably I'm doing something at the table or whatever and an ad comes on at volume. Sure, I can hold the volume down key, but it takes a bit for that to gradually silence the media.
What I want is to be able to double tap the volume control or something similarly fast and have it instantly silence everything (except alarms), similar to how the physical sound off switch worked on my OP6T.
Is there a solution for this? I'm fully stock, not rooted, not planning to root.

There are times I feel I should have grabbed an 8T for $400, but i wanted for once to experience a pure google phone. I knew it was going to be thick and heavy when I bought it but I didn't realize how much I would miss that switch.
That said, I'm enjoying the Pixel otherwise, and am pretty settled in with it. I've made the transition and don't plan to send mine back. This is a pretty nice phone!

Settings > System > Rules. Enable and use the "silence phone" rule. It's location-dependant so there is no toggle like what you are used to.
EDIT: For finer control than what Google provides, Tasker or a similar app should work for you.

Hmm. I'm not sure I understand how this is supposed to work. I don't want the rule to start when I reach a location or connect to a network, I just want to be able to quickly tell the phone to silence all sounds (other than alarms of course) at specific times like if I see an ad loading up. And I would want to be able to undo the silencing quickly too.
I went into the rules and tried enabling, but it's all about doing things when I reach a location/wifi spot.
I did double check my gesture settings, to make sure the Flip to Shhh was on... it is... I Think the shushing just applies to notifications and ringing, not media (ad sounds are controlled via media sound level).

I'm breathing a huge sigh of relief. I set mine so a single tap of the volume down mutes the media volume. Problem solved! And I like the option to disregard button mapper when the volume control is being used manually.
OK now! My biggest beef with this phone now fades into the sunset.
My initial reason to install was torch which I've mapped to volume down. Great app and @flar2 is a member on here so give him a thumbs up
