What would you like in an automated tool? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

When you mess around with your phone (flashing, adb commands, etc) what would you like to be done easier for you? I'm currently building a tool that'll be universal and open source.
IF you have any ideas leave them below!

an excellent question. I love setting up automation with tasker but I've run out of ideas to implement. Im curious what other may find useful...(no thread hijack)

I would love to know how to set up an nfc task to toggle my bedroom tv on and off. I know it's stupid, but I'm lazy. Lol. I tried for a couple of hours to get it figured out and I could do it.

COVX! How are you? And that's a good question. I would probably want to find out how to recreate the double tap method on the lock screen like on the G2.

My friend has a Rom of 4.2 on his gs3 and nexus 7 that allows for "tickle" wake up. So it's not the double tap, but just a swipe across the screen. I haven't personally used it so I'm not sure if it has to be in the Rom or if we could add it in.
Update: Might have been galaxy nexus. Found an app for the nexus, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2101488

There is a similar one called PGM2, I used it on my Galaxy Nexus. It requires a kernel that supports it. (most of the custom kernels do). You can set it to respond to tapping the screen, swiping, etc. You can simply swipe to the left across the bottom of the screen to turn it off. I love my Galaxy Nexus.... I just upgraded to the S4 2 weeks ago with the Verizon Unlimited Data keeping option and despite no custom kernel/4.3 support due to ME7, I LOVE this phone even more...the speed is phenomenal and I get more than triple the battery life of my Galaxy Nexus (and it has an extended battery). I'm running Hyperdrive rom and it's more than enough to keep me happy until if/when kexec support or other bootloader workaround is available.

Is this PGM2 available for the S4?

Maybe some of the easier tasks like wifi off when leaving home/work network. Quiet hrs. during certain times, battery saving mode when sleeping for a period of time etc. Sounds like a good idea if its simplified. Tasker was a PITA to learn

one of my favorite tools used in flashing is a zip that copies all my custom notification mp3s to the system/media folder for me. Something similar would be nice

tasker can be difficult for some to wrap they're head around...i love learning that kind of stuff but im weird like that. i have so much goodness automated with tasker...i frickin love that app.
if OP automated the importing of tasker profiles for some of the things mentioned above that would be useful for some folks too. most basic codes for that can be downloaded and imported to tasker

Anyway to use the touch buttons as a LED notifier?

Is it possible to use the touch buttons as an LED notifier for missed calls, email, and SMS? Sure they cant change colors but at least it could blink every X seconds/minutes.
You do Realize this has been asked before.. I sent Jac a thread that has this working on the I9000.. Not sure if he's still looking into it or not though.
its already done for Captivate.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780732
Whats included:
-Correct Screen auto-rotate
-HSUPA support
-MobileAP support (aka wireless tethering)
-Selecting with power button in recovery mode
-External SD card support
-Postboot scripts
-Voodoo lagfix
-Softkey Backlight Notification
I tried and got bricked... so if someone can make this for Vibrant i will be happy.

I personally don't care for that app. It's okay idea, but what really needs to get done is samsung to implement the Notifications into the buttons. I've seen what the i9000 has done, it's not too bad. This has been posted many times, you might want to try the search button

Ive been using that but its questionable how it affects battery life and long-term effects on the screen life.
noLED is a decent alternative imo
When I used to noLED I would press the volume buttons and it would give me the volume sound and light up the screen but still on black. So I predicted it would kill my battery quicker.

NoLED is a PITA...it adds another layer of lockscreens/button-touches to get your notifications, thus I didn't care for it much. It also FC'd on me all the time...YMMV.
Someone will most likely get the button led flash to work one day, just be patient.
Flash notify in the market place will suffice for now and it actually works pretty good
surprised this hasn't already been implemented for the vibrant. if it's already done on the captivate isn't it just a matter of time for someone to port the code over?
Reason it hasn't been implemented got the vibrant its because your talking a whole new kernel build... Along with that the current implementations of it, from what I read prior, aren't too fond of battery life and they can't make it blink like a led would do. The buttons backlight just stays on. I don't know if that has changed any time recently but thats what it was like the previous time I looked it up.

The best alternative IMO is Flash Notify. Been using it for a long time with no issues. Really wanted the soft keys to light up for notifications but I don't find that necessary anymore.

Pros, Cons, solutions, workarounds and opinions

Me and some other guys kinda highjacked another thread so I decided to open a new one here for people to share their opinions, thought and general arguments and if there are easy solutions to the matters that the DNA makes you sad, I did look through the first 10 pages of this section and didn't find anything similar so people, bash away, and bear in mind that what you say will shape my (and others) opinion and whether I should or shouldn't buy this damn amazing piece of equipment
This seems like a good idea, and I can definitely see this helping a lot of people. I'm extremely happy with my DNA thus far; stellar battery life and performance, and the build quality is superb (especially the literal edge-to-edge glass that feels like it flows off the front of the screen). It's also quite resilient - I had it sitting in the passenger seat of my car, got into a pretty serious accident, and the phone doesn't have a single scratch on it. Obviously I got very lucky, but yeah..
On another note, my only gripe is that I can't seem to delete 3 of the stock bookmarks (Google, VZW Home Page, and Your Guide Mobile). I've tried clearing the app data, but that didn't help. I'm not rooted, but I'd think there should be some sort of workaround.. any tips would be appreciated

I don't think that without root you'll be able to delete them, not sure though and I'm not suggesting you should root cause apart from the warranty being void there's always a risk of bricking, small but is there... I guess for now you gotta live with it.
One thing that annoyed me about the DNA is that they chose to put Back, Menu, and Multitasking as the buttons. So you still have to have the 3-dot menu on screen. Luckily, if you root the device, you can change the multitasking button to Settings (which is exactly what I wanted), so I'm thrilled to have that. The bloatware remover is great as well.
If you aren't afraid to root it, there is awesome stuff out there for it. I won't be using a rom without Sense because I actually like Sense a lot. The lock screen and camera software are the best that I've seen.
The USB flap is annoying, but I will definitely be getting a wireless charger.

Ah, alright. I'm planning on rooting it eventually.. at some point.. but as you said, there's always that risk lol. Plus, beyond that small issue with the 3 bookmarks, everything else about the phone is perfect even without root, so I can live with it Thanks for your input though!

I see what you mean. I just tried it myself and couldn't delete those 3 bookmarks either. Guess root is needed to delete them. Unfortunately, currently you cannot write to the system while booted in android on the DNA. You would have to do it through recovery somehow.

That's a good idea too. I almost never use the stock browser anyway. Boat browser has been pretty good to me as well although any of these would work. What I like about 3rd party browsers probably the most (aside from features) is the fact that I can exit the browser. With the stock one it will just keep running even if you back out of it.

phones been surprisingly awsome on stock.
I rooted the phone so i could run wifi tether. No issues with disconnects and I can actually tether my phone and not have to plug it in for 6-8 hours.
Love the screen, not just how good it looks but the waterfall effect the glass has feels amazing to me. Overall, very pleased with my purchase.
the european version was just announced so I think I'm gonna be going for that cause it states a sd card slot in contrast to the dna,
all the other specs remain the same
so I guess I'll be attending another forum soon, hope you find help on this thread and pm me if I can help with anything

My biggest gripe (besides the 3 dot menu button) is the damn messaging app. Every single time I go into it, it 'refreshes.' So many times the app takes a few seconds to load and it shows everyone's phone numbers instead of the names. I just don't understand why.
I'm hesitant to switch to another messaging app because 1) I think they're ugly/love the look of the Sense app and 2) I love how I can see a new message on the Sense lock screen and swipe directly into it.

It sounds kinda weird, how many contacts and messages do you have? if it's not thousands I guess there might be something wrong
try another messaging app to see if it's persistant or just the sense messaging
I don't have that many contacts, and I definitely don't have that many messages. I limit it to 200 per thread (only a few people reach this), and I even go through and delete it down to like 10 threads that are the most important. Regardless, this shouldn't happen on a phone with 2GB of RAM. Frustrates me to no end.
I posted a thread about this in this section maybe a week or two ago, and a few users chimed in saying they were seeing similar behavior. I don't think it's just me.
Mine does the refresh on sms too. Its like 1 second though so not a big deal.
Had the phone for a week. Battery life has been excellent. This is the first time in 2 years I havent had to charge my phone at work at all. Consistently get well over 4 hours screen on time. Although I've noticed using non-sense launcher its not quite as good but still excellent.
The screen is amazing and even at 5 inches it fits comfortably in the hand. Even pushing this many pixels I have yet to notice anything id call lag.
The 3-dot menu can be annoying if you notice it. Hoping for an update somewhere to deal with that at some point. I've also had issues with Netflix not loading properly but I blame the app. Also, I've noticed when I change lockscreen style, like to productivity or something it doesn't work too smoothly. Not being able to change wallpaper on a screen longpress kinda baffles me as well.
The phone definitely has some quirks and some areas where HTC could have made the operation of things more efficient instead of adding unnecessary steps. But I would definitely recommend this phone to anyone it is really a pleasure to use.

S4 lag?

Just got the s4 yesterday. I'm experiencing some lag issues with the gallery and mostly the text message app and sometimes other areas of the phone. When I click the text app it opens then if I click to open up one of the convos that's when I notice a big delay. It's like a 1 second delay. This is basically instant on my note 2. Is this a software problem that will hopefully be fixed soon or a hardware problem? Anyone else notice this? That text delay when you open up a convo.. Also SwiftKey seems to lag sometimes.

Try Handcent SMS or Handcent Pro Beta for texting. Much faster. If you use any 3rd party texting program remember to go to your installed applications and click on All and then disable Messaging which is the default messaging application. This way you don't get double notifications. Then drag the icon to your bottom bar and lock screen if applicable.
Ok I got chomp sms. It seems to be the fastest. Why do you think weather bug radar runs better on my note 2 than my s4? The s4 is so much more powerful it seems like everything should be faster and smoother.

If you're rooted, an app called Seeder will make your phone noticeably snappier and quicker. Maybe using a custom launcher instead of the stock TouchWiz launcher might also help.

I'm not rooted and have no idea how to do that. I'm using nova launcher prime. I'm just trying to figure out why the hell my note 2 seems to run some apps faster than the s4? Think it's a software issue that they will fix with an update?

the s4 seems to have a laggy build in general. i noticed this right off the bat, so i rooted it and debloated it using titanium backup pro, which helped a good amount. i recently flashed hyperdrive and the lag is gone, and it is extremely fast and stable so far.

no matter what, you can always rearrange your home screen again to make it look how you want...
follow the steps listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798
that will root the phone. make sure you install a custom recovery like twrp or cwm, and make a backup. then, download titanium backup pro (it is like $6.99), and go in and freeze the apps you don't feel you need. make sure you do your research first as to what apps you are freezing, there are lists of bloatware posted all over the site. that will debloat your phone for the most part. after that, you can start to flash custom rom's with different tweaks built in. cleanrom is really nice, as is hyperdrive.

Perfect timing then. As everyone says, you've got to clean the bloat but it has to be loosened first so heat up a kettle of water and let the water vapor soak into the phone. Once that's done the real clean begins. Just as any bacteria or virus it's got to be nuked to kill it, so stick it in the microwave on high (not "hi") for 2 minutes. if you smell somethiny funky that means all is well and an extra minue or two wont hurt.
Lastly, the dead bloatware has to be extricated from the phone so use a small screwdriver to lift a corner of the glass and then shake out the dead bloatware.. Now its time to root so get a shovel and Miraclegrow ready.

hi all,, im a noob i know,,, ive had rooted S3 for a year now, love it! got a new S4 few days ago,, rooted it,, deleted all s-bloatware, deleted all verizon bloat,, turned off all animations, and phone is still super laggy when waking up phone/doing anything,, old S3 runs circles around this S4,, called samsung today & they were no help at all,,called verizon,, they said they're pushing out a update in the next few "days" not weeks to fix an error message peeps are getting and also for the lag but more for the error is what i got from the convo,,-------- ANYWAYS my ACTUAL point of posting here is that i have noticed that every time i open the CAMERA or Camcorder on the S4 no matter if i take a picture/video or close the app right away it automatically turns on the Transition Animation Scale to 1x!!!! i would love to know if this happens to everyone and maybe they just haven't noticed lol,, also noticed that the S4 doesn't lag as much when its plugged in being charged not matter if battery is 100% or 5% but unplug phone and it adds more lag,, DO I JUST HAVE A DEFECT or what? if these things dont hold true on your S4 then i can just have them send me another one,, Or hopefully this update maybe called 4.3.1 for verizon will fix all this in the next few days,, thanks for reading

The 1x transition from the camera bug is well known but I'm not sure if they pushed an update to fix that or not. I have heard that they did push an update to fix the security notification bug, so if you still have it I would try to do the 4.3 update again to fix it (you will lose root and have to do that again though). Touchwiz is by nature pretty laggy but what you're describing is not normal... I would do a factory reset and see if that helps. On mine I have bloat frozen, greenify, etc and it runs fairly smooth. Not buttery, but smoother than what you're saying.
Yeah i've done factory resets and used the verizon repair tool which unroots and puts all bloat back a few time to.. still the same lag.. I did all the exact same thing on my old s3 and my s4 is just way slower.. and I'm sorry I couldn't find anything on the 1x camera thing so thanks for helping.. I do still wonder if the 1x thing is on all carries and models or just on random ones?

Cusom Roms

Okay, I've had it already with all this whining about Roms coming to our device when we don't have an unlocked boot loader yet. What the heck do some people here expect? These forums are for experienced developers, some of you should not even be posting asking these questions. If you want a ROM so badly learn to develop. Learn to unlock our boot loader, don't give our devs hell. This is not a Google device, this isn't a Nexus where you would have a ROM the next day. Chill, even the worst devices have Dev support, ours will come. So until we get an unlocked boot loader please stop complaining, you may as well rewatch the noob video, because you clearly don't understand what you've been told
That being said what is your favorite custom ROM out there that you would like to see land on our device? There are so many but what is second to none in your opinion?
This biggest problem is how they will implement the 3 virtual buttons in custom roms?
CyanogenMod, no contest.
I really like LG's stock rom, so if I could get a debloated version of it I'd be happy. I have faith it will come.
@Walter21026 please stop whining about whining! this will transform you to the uber whiner!

you don't need an unlocked bootloader to flash a rom. you just need an exploit. too many people are saying this and it's not true.

ROMS for KT version
Is anyone actively developing any ROMS for the KT version F320?
Cyanogen Mod. That is exactly what I'm hoping for.
I am curious to know how/if the "Knock on" feature will be implemented.
I'm already dreading having to use the rear power button every single time I want to wake the device. "Knock on" does not yet work with any Launcher that I have tried. The status bar still works as a shutdown, but I've hidden my status bar. I've been relegated to assigning my app drawer button as a shutdown while assigning a swipe action to the app drawer button to activate the app drawer. I don't mind this implementation, but how will custom roms be able to implement "Knock on"?
If I can't use "Knock on" to wake the device, I'll be a little upset. I'd rather not have to give my phone the reach around every time I want to use it.

Agree with you. I just want to get a debloated version. More ram usable.

For now you could just freeze or uninstall all those apps for the time being, at least if ram is your concern you could free up 600 mb of ram. But shutting down these services will have a positive impact on your phones resources without a doubt.

I'm running CleanROM 1.1 and there's a noticeable UI speed improvement over stock. I think I'll stay with this rom for a while... best Android experience I've ever had.

Clean rom is only available to AT&T right now, this is the best methodology for debloating the OS outside of having the debloated rom.

Knock on works with 3rd party launchers. You have to knock on the status bar. The screen still comes on using 3rd party launchers in my testing.

With many launchers you can also use the double tap gesture (I use Nova) and assign it to the app "screen off and lock" in the app store. Works seamlessly with no noticeable difference than stock launcher.

Unlocked boot loader or not, I can load nodded Ron's and flash zip files and retain root to my apps And not just adb. This phone supersedes my expectations and I'm happy with what I bought. As for CM...never met such an overrated ROM in my life. To each their own. This phone and development will soon happen...

I am not a fan of vanilla Android, I like the LG UI and also their launcher. I will be happy with some more themes for the stock themer, tweaks to remove things here and there and edit the status bar, notification area etc. Really I love this phone so much stock that for me its just a few things I want to be able to change. As far as a rom ported over, I have been flashing for a few years here and it was just weeks ago while I had the HTC One that I flashed ViperOne rom from Team Venom. I never used a rom that gave so much control and options in such an easy and well packaged form, turning in my One for the G2 would have been so much easier had I not had to give up Viper.

So who still checks this Forum ? ( ********* PLEASE READ ******** )

I know this device is old.. its the only one I have right now and have no clue if i'd ever get the money to upgrade.. just curious how many people still check this forum or if i'm one of the only few...
Also if you are a typical visitor.. maybe post up so I can get to know this Note II community.
Thanks!
interesting.. 10 views already and no votes or posts... lol..
i see it has 23 views.. and 2 responses. Great! so there is still some life here. Are any developers still here?
I still use this device for gaming only. I play Underworld Empire via WiFi/mobile hotspot. Have multiple toons in the games . It is rooted and running TeamOctos MM weekly build rom.
I use my old Note II as a training device for my 6 year old. The thing is a tank.

thanks guys for responses! So i'm guessing there aren't anymore developers still working on this phone?
Not sure if there is any that hangs around this forum. TeamOctos has their rom on their own website, I'm glad they still make weekly builds for this phone. Runs pretty smoothly for me.

First Off, thanks for the response!
Second, Yeah i would love to go with a newer weekly build and version of android.. .. but I just really like to have screen options to turn screen off, bring up power menu, and have options for screenshot and screen record. I had forgotten about the power of XPosed Framework ( which R3D utilizes ) and perhaps that could help make OCTos more useful for me..
I also do like some of the touchwiz features that I can use with the S-Pen.. so i'm torn.. LOL
I have xposed installed along with TeamOctos, gravity box mm module installed. Since TeamOctos rom have most of the features, I scantily use the gravity box options. Don't wanna break anything lol. I find the s-pen was more a gimmick than anything else. The capacitive buttons don't work with the pen, have to manually press with finger (this was fixed with the Note 3, which I sold). Also there are 3rd party apps that can do just about the same as the Samsung spen apps.

yeah i was using that for a little bit.. but I noticed the overall sound volume seemed to be lower... when I went back to 4.4.2 , i could really hear the difference... i'm not sure if that is a AOSP issue or what.. do you notice it?
Yes unfortunately it is because of AOSP. I remember having to manually editing a mixer.xml file to increase the volume but still wasn't close to the sound level of TW rom. I got use to the low lvls after a while.
Now I don't use it as my daily driver so sound isn't really an issue anymore. Performance and battery life is what I'm looking for so it's ideal.

Ahh ok thank you. that makes me feel a lot better to know it wasn't just me that noticed it and that it wasn't directly related to my phone or my flash status...
so I guess its not an easy fix or even possible since it wasn't addressed when this phone was still being developed... darn..
I really don't recall what the reasoning was, if it was due to drivers or software. It can be remedied by editing the sound file, I believe someone has done it with this phone. Do a post search for low sound or mixer.xml on here.
Haha not trying to sell AOSP roms or anything but I find them more useful with their options. Isn't that the main reason people use Android phones, for their customization?

HA yes.. but i guess for those of us that don't have multiple phones to try out different ROMs and updates :silly: constantly have to find the happy medium between stability, functionality and customization.. Right now i'm gonna stick with TW 4.4.2 (at least on my Note II) since I need to have these things on my phone for me to use it as a daily driver:
1. Stable (won't freeze up / random reboots / random power offs / FC'ers)
2. Camera - Camera must be able to take great photos (at least as good as the physical camera is)
3. Sound - Must have great sounding audio for voice calls / speakerphone / ringtones and for media watching
4. Functional - Must be able to not miss calls / notifications or messages and connect to data for internet
5. Battery - Battery must be decent to good.. want it to be able to last at least 1 day of medium to heavy use..

You are correct there. I could not find it either myself. I wonder if TeamOctos even included it in their build for this phone. I checked with another phone of mine (LG G3) thats running the same ROM. It has the mixer_paths.xml in the folder system/ETC. May have to contact them to find out why... Sorry, like I've mentioned, I don't use my Note II as a daily driver so haven't had the need to increase the sound levels. I wonder if its possible to just copy the file from another ROM?

yeah i thought about that but nervous with all that modifications either messing something up or not even getting it as loud as TW..
right now i think ill stay with a 4.4.2 rom and use xposed to get the features i like. do wish i had 6.0 but have to be happy with what i got. ?
Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful. Hope things will look up for you and that you may be able to afford a newer phone. This years phone releases haven't been all the great, maybe next year will see some really great improvements. The biggest thing is the battery life in most cell phones nowadays (unless you have removable option). Manufacturers will never give you a better battery/longer life because they want consumers to keep buying newer phones. Batteries usually only have a lifetime of about ~1.5 years, the more you charge, the less it will hold a charge. Forces people to buy new phones

yeah true.. and for me its difficult because i'm fairly picky with what I want in the phone... seems like i haven't actually found a "perfect" one yet... several will have 80 to 90% but some will be missing 1 major thing i want.. and then i have to decide how important that is... So far from all the phones i had.. I think my Nexus 5 would probably me my all time favorite... of course I would have preferred an AMOLED display, front facing speakers and better cameras... but again.. had to pick and choose... the HTC 10 was amazing as well.. but I did have some issues with my LTE signal dropping.. so not sure if it was a fluke or because of my Total Wireless service? maybe the ROM.. idk.. LOL
Hmm favorite all time, may have to go with my Note 3 til I sold it. Had it with Verizon, unfortunately the bootloader was locked and when I updated to Jasmine rom, screwed up and lost root. It was a great phone, s pen is so useful, removable battery, amoled display, SD card slot. Camera was alright, my V10 excels in that department! I'm with T-mobile now, service is great for where I need it and their phones are mostly bootloader unlocked. Can easily root them.
Watching Floss Carter on YouTube, with his review of HTC 10. His biggest negative factor is that the phone is too small for him. Everything else is good, he even mentions that HTC should've made two options like HTC 10 and 10+.
His top 5 phones:
1: Note 5
2: Nexus 6p
3: iPhone 6s+
4: S7 edge
5: LG G5
