I know this device is old.. its the only one I have right now and have no clue if i'd ever get the money to upgrade.. just curious how many people still check this forum or if i'm one of the only few...
Also if you are a typical visitor.. maybe post up so I can get to know this Note II community.
Thanks!
interesting.. 10 views already and no votes or posts... lol..
i see it has 23 views.. and 2 responses. Great! so there is still some life here. Are any developers still here?
I still use this device for gaming only. I play Underworld Empire via WiFi/mobile hotspot. Have multiple toons in the games . It is rooted and running TeamOctos MM weekly build rom.
I use my old Note II as a training device for my 6 year old. The thing is a tank.

thanks guys for responses! So i'm guessing there aren't anymore developers still working on this phone?
Not sure if there is any that hangs around this forum. TeamOctos has their rom on their own website, I'm glad they still make weekly builds for this phone. Runs pretty smoothly for me.

First Off, thanks for the response!
Second, Yeah i would love to go with a newer weekly build and version of android.. .. but I just really like to have screen options to turn screen off, bring up power menu, and have options for screenshot and screen record. I had forgotten about the power of XPosed Framework ( which R3D utilizes ) and perhaps that could help make OCTos more useful for me..
I also do like some of the touchwiz features that I can use with the S-Pen.. so i'm torn.. LOL
I have xposed installed along with TeamOctos, gravity box mm module installed. Since TeamOctos rom have most of the features, I scantily use the gravity box options. Don't wanna break anything lol. I find the s-pen was more a gimmick than anything else. The capacitive buttons don't work with the pen, have to manually press with finger (this was fixed with the Note 3, which I sold). Also there are 3rd party apps that can do just about the same as the Samsung spen apps.

yeah i was using that for a little bit.. but I noticed the overall sound volume seemed to be lower... when I went back to 4.4.2 , i could really hear the difference... i'm not sure if that is a AOSP issue or what.. do you notice it?
Yes unfortunately it is because of AOSP. I remember having to manually editing a mixer.xml file to increase the volume but still wasn't close to the sound level of TW rom. I got use to the low lvls after a while.
Now I don't use it as my daily driver so sound isn't really an issue anymore. Performance and battery life is what I'm looking for so it's ideal.

Ahh ok thank you. that makes me feel a lot better to know it wasn't just me that noticed it and that it wasn't directly related to my phone or my flash status...
so I guess its not an easy fix or even possible since it wasn't addressed when this phone was still being developed... darn..
I really don't recall what the reasoning was, if it was due to drivers or software. It can be remedied by editing the sound file, I believe someone has done it with this phone. Do a post search for low sound or mixer.xml on here.
Haha not trying to sell AOSP roms or anything but I find them more useful with their options. Isn't that the main reason people use Android phones, for their customization?

HA yes.. but i guess for those of us that don't have multiple phones to try out different ROMs and updates :silly: constantly have to find the happy medium between stability, functionality and customization.. Right now i'm gonna stick with TW 4.4.2 (at least on my Note II) since I need to have these things on my phone for me to use it as a daily driver:
1. Stable (won't freeze up / random reboots / random power offs / FC'ers)
2. Camera - Camera must be able to take great photos (at least as good as the physical camera is)
3. Sound - Must have great sounding audio for voice calls / speakerphone / ringtones and for media watching
4. Functional - Must be able to not miss calls / notifications or messages and connect to data for internet
5. Battery - Battery must be decent to good.. want it to be able to last at least 1 day of medium to heavy use..

You are correct there. I could not find it either myself. I wonder if TeamOctos even included it in their build for this phone. I checked with another phone of mine (LG G3) thats running the same ROM. It has the mixer_paths.xml in the folder system/ETC. May have to contact them to find out why... Sorry, like I've mentioned, I don't use my Note II as a daily driver so haven't had the need to increase the sound levels. I wonder if its possible to just copy the file from another ROM?

yeah i thought about that but nervous with all that modifications either messing something up or not even getting it as loud as TW..
right now i think ill stay with a 4.4.2 rom and use xposed to get the features i like. do wish i had 6.0 but have to be happy with what i got. ?
Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful. Hope things will look up for you and that you may be able to afford a newer phone. This years phone releases haven't been all the great, maybe next year will see some really great improvements. The biggest thing is the battery life in most cell phones nowadays (unless you have removable option). Manufacturers will never give you a better battery/longer life because they want consumers to keep buying newer phones. Batteries usually only have a lifetime of about ~1.5 years, the more you charge, the less it will hold a charge. Forces people to buy new phones

yeah true.. and for me its difficult because i'm fairly picky with what I want in the phone... seems like i haven't actually found a "perfect" one yet... several will have 80 to 90% but some will be missing 1 major thing i want.. and then i have to decide how important that is... So far from all the phones i had.. I think my Nexus 5 would probably me my all time favorite... of course I would have preferred an AMOLED display, front facing speakers and better cameras... but again.. had to pick and choose... the HTC 10 was amazing as well.. but I did have some issues with my LTE signal dropping.. so not sure if it was a fluke or because of my Total Wireless service? maybe the ROM.. idk.. LOL
Hmm favorite all time, may have to go with my Note 3 til I sold it. Had it with Verizon, unfortunately the bootloader was locked and when I updated to Jasmine rom, screwed up and lost root. It was a great phone, s pen is so useful, removable battery, amoled display, SD card slot. Camera was alright, my V10 excels in that department! I'm with T-mobile now, service is great for where I need it and their phones are mostly bootloader unlocked. Can easily root them.
Watching Floss Carter on YouTube, with his review of HTC 10. His biggest negative factor is that the phone is too small for him. Everything else is good, he even mentions that HTC should've made two options like HTC 10 and 10+.
His top 5 phones:
1: Note 5
2: Nexus 6p
3: iPhone 6s+
4: S7 edge

After a few days of playing with my S4 I would have to say I'm not very happy with it. My smart stay setting don't work but maybe a 1/4 of the time if that. My voice commands don't work but half the time and I get a bit of lag from time to time. I've always used the stock browser in the past cause of flash player and now that don't work right, along with every now and then not being able to click links like its lagging but yet the url, bookmarks, Window manager, and menu button work. Plus the battery life hasn't been to great but that may be me being used to the note 2 battery. If anyone else is getting the same thing or knows of fixes please let me know. I have had these problems on fully stock, rooted with stock debloated, and now on rooted stock. Should I just wait and see what roms come out or should I try to return it and if I should return it is there a way back to non rooted fully stock? Thank you for your time.
edit 5/30: i just got done formating the int and ext storage to start from scratch. after that i noticed hyperdrive was just released so i installed that. phone softbricked cause i tried to install the ads mod from the app he has on the rom. was getting missing file errors and i/o error when tring to restore/wipe/install anything. did the no-wipe factory image and had to wipe data and factory reset after to get it out of bootloop. now im back and phone seems to be running great (but not sure about the voice commands and smart screen stuff just yet). i think my problem was i didnt change the save folder for titanium backup to sd card and i had some rom backups in the int. storage. figured this out when i went to make a backup and it said not enough memory. so if your having problems with lag double check your int. storage to make sure you have plenty of space.
Sounds like every S 4 I have ever seen.

Cleanrom would be nice right about now but I heard it will be a while till he can get his hands on one. Looks like I may have to just wait it out for some roms to come out And hope the wonderful devs can get this thing running good. God knows verizon cant do it.

Thanks for the heads up! I ran it on my note 2 and loved it. Can't freaking wait!
Glad I brightened things up a bit for you!! Heck I am looking to upgrade soon and am considering the gs4. Been testing the waters in anticipation. I ran one of scotts roms years ago on my Optimus S (moved to the nexus s 4g, to currently the epic 4g touch) and he made a solid rom then, I know that.
I came from a note 2 as well. I can't wait for custom roms. The stock rom Sucks. I miss clean rom and beanstown but I'm sure everything will be here soon because the S series devices always have more development because they're more popular and more of an everyone phone unlike the note which isn't for everyone.

I've noticed the Verizon S4 lags when compared to the T-Mobile variant.
the issue with links you cant click is an bug browser freezing up.hopefully they will fix it soon.temp u can clise tge broswer and then fire back up and it should work.
I wonder in Verizon applied the latest update like all the other carruers did that took care of lag etc...I remember something in early may that the other carriers were getting an update to address the lag issue and since our phones were just released last week...it may be a little bit before Verizon catches up.

The Galaxy S3 was the first android phone that I could say finally solved the laggyness that has been there since the droid. I have an iphone 5, S3, and the S4. The S4, at least mine, is clearly faster then my S3, and the even the iphone (which has always been pinnacle of non lag phones)......can't even compare with the S4 smoothness, and that is saying something.
I hate lag, hated it since the OGDroid, and can see immediately. I'm sorry you're having issues with you're S4, but I really don't know what alternative phone you could buy as of now.....because, if i'm not mistaking, the S4,HTC One or Iphone.....are the only phones you can buy with the least amount of lag as of todays date.
Best of luck to you.
Well I need to do some more testing with the voice command. I went outside today (were is bright) and noticed that some of the clear stickers on the side of the phone were still there. Just not to sure if the ones I pulled off was covering the mic. If it's better from here on out I will definitely feel like a de de deee.
edit: still having a little of trouble but it may have to do with background noises and the phone volume being all the way up.
Tks

Same here.
I turned off all the Air gestures, and other 'features' that I don't need or care about and switched to ADW EX launcher.
Very pleased with the S4.
I'm happy with my GS4. No issues with me. My battery has been treating me much better compared to my old LG Revolution. I haven't noticed any lag on my phone and that's something I noticed all the time on 2.3.6

That sucks. I'm glad I haven't had any issues.
I kept reading posts about the S4 being laggy, so I was a little worried when I picked mine up yesterday. Luckily, I seem to have a lag free version.
I came from an iPhone 5, and this S4 is much faster. Prior to that I had a gnex, and there is night and day difference between that and the S4.
Omg, Clean Rom is coming!!!!!! I cant wait, his roms are seriously top notch, I have renewed faith!!!!

What are you guys talking about here, you can run other carrier roms, what is your hold up? You can run any rom the ATT I337 can, to include sprint and t-mobile roms. you just need to use the loki patch (verizon) within the recovery apps. Smile and start here...Cheer up Charlie!

No, we're all sitting here waiting for Lollipop. There's really not a huge necessity for root other than adblocking. I've rooted and custom rom'd other smartphones before right out of the box, but after jumping on this phone, there's no need. Performance is smooth, optimized battery life excellence, and already included neat features like Double Tap to Wake without needing to root it.
Why do you desire root so badly?

It would seem like a better equivalent to suit your needs with Sony quality is the international build, the regular Z3.
Or you could be the extraordinary to find a way to root/unlock the Z3v and claim that nice bounty reward. I'm soon to up my donation amount.

It's a hit or miss with it sometimes. I'd say it works for me 80-85% of the time, but if you double tap in the center of the screen it will increase your chances.

I created a thread in this Z3v forum where I listed the amount of apps that are safe to disable. You just go to application manager, all apps, then choose the app you wish to disable.

Root would be nice only because it plays to the geek inside me. Otherwise the Z3v pretty much does everything I need it to do at a level of efficiency that is already well beyond my basic needs for a device.

I lost interest in root after the original droid, droid x and droid x2. With the galaxy s3 and now the z3v I am not trying to save space or fix problems with the OS. Rooting was a major pita IMHO and the Verizon apps I just don't use. I'm not sure why people still need root anymore. Remind me?

I agree. It is a pain to constantly change ROMs, change kernels, etc but I have still rooted every device. Keep it stock, move apps to a separate folder so there is no chance that they run, changing the font all through the system (not sure why that isn't a standard feature by now), & the big one I miss, blocking ads.

Lollipop is... disappointing.
The update seems to be a huge piece of garbage in a Material Design wrapper. The battery preformance is worse, the auto-brightness doesn't work as it should, I've been nothing but annoyed by it and I want 4.4.4 back..
I have not had success rooting the Z3 (D6603 on 23.1.A.0.690). Any of you know a good way to root and then downgrade to stock 4.4.4? Or is CM12 stable enough to replace 5.0.2? Any help would be appreciated!

my 2 years upgrade is almost here, and the z3v is the phone I'm leaning towards (others under consideration are the S4, S5 and LG G3). My concern is that VZW will push out an OTA upgrade that can't be stopped, without having root....am I wrong about that? My last experience was with the S3 (which I still have&use).
I'm thinking about buying a new phone I currently have the pixel XL and I'm conflicted between the S9+ and the pixel2/3 so I came here to see what the S9 is like I loved Samsung when I had the S5 but it had some problems and I was curious if they were fixed
1. Does the keyboard lag insanely after about a few months?
2 can you use something other than TouchWiz on Samsung?
3. Is it easy to root?
4. How is the development for it? Is there a lot of development as far roms and kernels etc etc?
5. can you unlock the bootloader?
6. how is the speed and camera?
7. would you recommend it?

1) That happens?
2)Yes, there a plenty of custom launchers, but its not TouchWiz anymore and its far closer to stock google. Well, as close to stock as Samsung goes. Think HTC Sense and then add a bit more stuff to it. Just a little.
3)Not tried, but I would imagine theres a way to do it written in the forums
4)Its still a pretty new phone (only just a couple of month I think?) So I imagine people are working on plenty. Keep checking back, I suppose, would be my advice
5)Never tried on a Samsung. I just know that you can flash things either using ODIN, or using TWRP if you have that flashed.
6)Both amazing. A lot of people say that the camera doesnt quite match up to the Pixel 2, but for me the difference is so little its not even worth caring about.
7) Yes.
Think so far is the best phone you can buy. If I need to point out a flaw for me and a few some could be the battery but no stopped apps and slow downs or heat up nice and smooth love there launcher swipe up and app draw pops up nice.

7) Yes.

Yeah my s5 was SO laggy no matter what I did, clearing the cache factory resetting etc etc nothing helped it, I would click to bring up the keyboard and it would take a minute or two to come up and that's not an exaggeration lol the same thing happened with my girlfriend who had the same phone, I looked it up and it looks like some people have the same issue on the s8 I figure it might not be enough time for it to appear on the 9+ but thanks for the info
I saw awhile ago that Samsung refuses to allow things to be flashed on their devices unless they're signed by them like roms and things so that effectively killed Odin, I'm not sure if they changed it or if people found a workaround or not, I guess I'll just have to surf the forums a little bit to find out

Get yourself a package disabler (root is not required for some) from the Play Store if you buy this phone, you can disable a lot of services and preinstalled apps to keep your phone fast and snappy.
It seems like a real good phone for a great price. How come there are barely any ROMs? Is it just because of the lack of market share of this phone? I'm coming from a Nexus 5 which has tons of ROMs and has for years.

Well there's half a dozen AOSP ROMs.
But LG is to blame for not more. They released the phone September/October 2017, but didn't release the open market variants (non-carrier models with official bootloader unlock code) until months later, and then NEVER officially announced US998 bootloader unlock eligibility. Users basically had to hack the LG website to get a code, and then it only worked for the open marketUS998 V30, not the open market US998 V30+.
In mid-May 2018 with Oreo update is when @TxanMoe discovered the wonderful WTF bootloader unlock exploit. That was 8-9 months after release and devs had moved on.
@SGCMarkus has been our rock. He singlehandedly maintains half a dozen ROMs and now others are stepping up to help out.
Also there's concern custom ROMs will negate proprietary features like QUAD DAC and camera and battery life. We can use two apps for quad DAC, but have to use Google cam port for camera instead of stock camera.
I'm still running stock rooted firmware myself, with a couple of Magisk modules.
How many ROMs do you want?

It is a good phone. I would imagine most devs have lives outside of xda. It takes time to build these roms and I suspect it isn't a full time priority. I've looked into building briefly...it made my head spin. I'm too old to sit in front of a computer more than I already do. Kudos to the ones that build.

Obviously but so do the people who did all those Nexus 5 ROMs so there's clearly a difference here when all other things are equal.

As far as the end-user process, based on what I read on this forum, yes. I think it was easier for people to figure it out initially too, probably for the reasons ChazzMatt explained.

Honestly, this device is a decent experience with stock. Stock seems to have the edge over los 15.1 for me.

Thanks for that info. Does it offer the ability to modify the "power menu" when pressing the power button? For example, on my Nexus 5 one of the main features I like in ROMs is this ability. I want to be able to put reboot and power in that menu and take everything else out. I also like having AdAway built-in to my current N5 ROM but I'm sure there's a way to flash that or something similar. It just uses a hosts file to block ad domains so it does a great job blocking adds device-wide.

LG always does this. The LG Fathom was a boss phone with great specs and nobody was able to develop much for it. I don't know what they're afraid of by allowing us to utilize the Quad DAC but it's really setting this phone back.
Does the V10 DAC fix app actually work, or do I have to use USB Audio player pro to utilize the DAC? I'm cheap and don't want to pay $7 lol

I don't own the phone yet. It's something I'm strongly considering and ROM support was one thing I was looking at.
In addition to wanting to modify the power menu there are other things I can do with my Nexus 5 using a custom ROM. Some are not that important and there are probably no deal-breakers but here's a list of cool things I wonder if the V30/+ has:
Ability to disable automatic OTA updates (aka have actual control over my own device. I'm not buying an iPhone here...).
Option to allow volume down/up to enter/exit DND mode.
Status bar icon modification (which icons display. For example I can disable BT icon even though I have it enabled).
Carrier label modification/disabler (change it from saying ATT to something else or disable completely as well as color/font/font size modification).
Clock position, AM/PM size, Date case, Date format, Date position, status bar font, status bar font size.
Battery indicator adjustment (I like the Cyanogenmod style; a number of the percentage inside of a circle representing that number).
Center time/date.
Long-press power button for flashlight when screen is locked (automatic-off set by user. I use 1 minute).
When pressing volume buttons the ability to access non-ringtone volumes and slide them to adjust are available.
Ability to adjust how each app is permitted to show notifications (allow fullscreen interruption/don't allow, never peek/always peek, etc...).
Option to set how long a peek notification will show for.
Option to turn screen on or leave it off when receiving a notification.
Ability to modify lock screen shortcuts.
Memory (consumption/available) in recent apps page.
Clear all recent apps button on apps page (this was removed from Android in Version 6 IIRC).
Ability to enable a lock icon on apps in recent apps page so that they aren't cleared when clearing all apps out from that page.
Ability to modify if I hear a sound (and which sound) and if the phone vibrates when being connected/disconnected from a power source.
Ability to change volume steps in volume panel.
As I go through my phone's features I realize that the V30/+ don't have a notification LED I love that thing. I think you can see that I basically miss a lot of old features from Android 4 and on that were removed from the OS.
Also, I've never used Oreo because I can't get any OREO ROMs to flash on my re-partitioned Nexus 5 so I don't really know what has changed in detail since Android 7.1.2.

@sneak310 Some of those features are available on LOS 15.1. Something like RR or DU will be the best bet for extensive customizing. Once you go to custom rom, ota's are not an issue. You can freeze or disable ota on stock. It still does a check on reboot though.

I figured it would have some of the features. Are you able to point out which it doesn't have (or which it has, if that is the lesser between the two)?

Well the Nexus 5 had a very vibrant modding community revolving around it even early on... or are you not counting that because it was a Google release?

You're going to raise my blood pressure. I had the Nexus 5X. The great phone that didn't have a microSD slot that I had encrypted, and had this leeeeeetle factory flaw that caused it to not be able to boot.
I managed to pull my data off in time before it crapped out again. Freezer trick extended its life by a tiny bit to get my data. Now it won't boot at all, so I can't even use the fix.
Oh yeah, and to answer your question no, I don't count it. It's a Google phone. Google steps in and supports the developers. Notice how we could only bootloader unlock through an exploit? Yeah LG hates us. It's not even that they don't care - they actively hate us. We extend the life of their phones so we don't buy their newer phones bogged down with bloatware.

I'm talking about the 5, not the 5X (it also didn't have an SD slot but I knew this was a tradeoff going in to the purchase. It was a $350 phone with high-end specs).

I did say "for me". I don't require much of my phone.
My questions may seem dumb but I have never owned a Samsung phone.
I know samsung likes their bloatware and proprietary methods. Can I avoid all the samsung bloat and a samsung account and still use the phone? Are there ROMs that give a stock android experience?
Also what are you guys seeing for SOT? Im coming from a Asus ROG 6 Pro.
Any bugs you guys are experiencing? My 6Pro is so full of bugs that has pushed me to move brands.
You don't need a custom rom, you don't even need to root it, just use universal android debloater gui from github or adb app control to remove all the bloat (both include good instructions and details about what to remove) and going through first time set up you don't need a samsung or google account.
Unless you are using an international version there is no custom ROM option. The 918U and U1 models don't have the option to OEM unlock and flash ROMs.
You can easily umbloat using the mentioned universal android debloater.
Ui downloaded the 5.0 or sth like that and updated, then it all went south.
Stayed with the 5.0 version and it works great.
As for the ROM I put Nova Launcher and it works fine
Not the same but as long as the X3 camera shoots ****ty pictures I'll leave it warranty capable

No bugs. Phone is super smooth and battery is amazing. About bloatware you can find everything you need in XDA thread called "Samsung Galaxy One UI - Optimization Guide".

Well, I used the "remove noise" or whatsoever option.
But for a X3 zoom I find the quality more than disappointing.
My Vivo X70Pro shots better photos.
Applied goodlock camera assistant, a bit better, and even gcam.
But quality just sucks for such a "high end" model...
Hoping on a FW fix though since with gcam its quite less worse
No issue here with 3x zoom with my S23U camera (B-version, EUX), just stock point&shoot....
Something like this ?
I'll retry with more natural light.
Maybe that's the issue.
Was pretty dark the time I took the picture
Awesome, thanks for the replies. Since there is no custom roms, do we still have unlock and root available? At bare minimum i would like to install AdAway got universal ad blocking.

My biggest concern is just losing the samsung camera, I hear other cameras apks dont work well with the phone.

Please try to activate night mode before switching to x3. Also in low light you need to be VERY still for the sensor and ISP to work its magic.
Moreoever, keep your lenses clean as much as possible.
These 2 photos I just shot now in a very dimly light room.

But if works like this, this is what it is .
