potential new phone - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

I'm thinking about buying a new phone I currently have the pixel XL and I'm conflicted between the S9+ and the pixel2/3 so I came here to see what the S9 is like I loved Samsung when I had the S5 but it had some problems and I was curious if they were fixed
1. Does the keyboard lag insanely after about a few months?
2 can you use something other than TouchWiz on Samsung?
3. Is it easy to root?
4. How is the development for it? Is there a lot of development as far roms and kernels etc etc?
5. can you unlock the bootloader?
6. how is the speed and camera?
7. would you recommend it?

Ususaly i like to assist users if i can, but now i say that you better do your own homework and learn something along the way. All your questions can be easily answered if you use XDA and Google or YouTube.

1) That happens?
2)Yes, there a plenty of custom launchers, but its not TouchWiz anymore and its far closer to stock google. Well, as close to stock as Samsung goes. Think HTC Sense and then add a bit more stuff to it. Just a little.
3)Not tried, but I would imagine theres a way to do it written in the forums
4)Its still a pretty new phone (only just a couple of month I think?) So I imagine people are working on plenty. Keep checking back, I suppose, would be my advice
5)Never tried on a Samsung. I just know that you can flash things either using ODIN, or using TWRP if you have that flashed.
6)Both amazing. A lot of people say that the camera doesnt quite match up to the Pixel 2, but for me the difference is so little its not even worth caring about.
7) Yes.

Think so far is the best phone you can buy. If I need to point out a flaw for me and a few some could be the battery but no stopped apps and slow downs or heat up nice and smooth love there launcher swipe up and app draw pops up nice.

Yeah my s5 was SO laggy no matter what I did, clearing the cache factory resetting etc etc nothing helped it, I would click to bring up the keyboard and it would take a minute or two to come up and that's not an exaggeration lol the same thing happened with my girlfriend who had the same phone, I looked it up and it looks like some people have the same issue on the s8 I figure it might not be enough time for it to appear on the 9+ but thanks for the info
I saw awhile ago that Samsung refuses to allow things to be flashed on their devices unless they're signed by them like roms and things so that effectively killed Odin, I'm not sure if they changed it or if people found a workaround or not, I guess I'll just have to surf the forums a little bit to find out

Get yourself a package disabler (root is not required for some) from the Play Store if you buy this phone, you can disable a lot of services and preinstalled apps to keep your phone fast and snappy.

[Q] Anyone staying on their Note's stock ROM?

Surprised myself and after two weeks of ownership I am still on the I717 Note's stock ROM. This was after constantly ROM flashing on my prior Android Samsung Infuse and iPhone4 & 3G (Jailbreak of course).
Stock battery life is decent and launchers like GO, ADW, etc. give plenty of ability to change icons, UI behavior, etc.
So far I haven't found any annoying problems that would require me to fix via rooting.
I HAD to root my prior Samsung Infuse because it had software bugs that required root to fix BUT I am real PROUD of my Note's ability to run strong and solid as a stock ROM. I haven't been forced to reboot yet in 2 weeks of ownership! Yeha!
For myself the KEY is to make myself to NOT TO LOOK AT Applications:Running Services...it makes me sick to see all those unnecessary apps loaded up.
I simply wanted to see how the Note behaved out-of-the box...and so far real impressed.
Will I ever ROOT - Probably, just to get rid of bloatware AND I will need to tether occasionally once I start traveling again.
Will I ever replace the ROM? Not sure, depends on features but definitely not interested in ROMs that just change icons, startup screens and colors.
anyway, this is just post to say how satisfied, thus far, with the Note's performance...as is.
Anything I'm missing that needs root to fix?

You can stop those with Autostarts (free in the market), and requires root. It prevents them from opening at all. If you end up checking it out, use the "after startup" disable option.
- Root required apps (there a lot of really good ones - this alone would be enough for me to root).
If you're not interested in theming, or a lot of modifications, then stock is cool. Features, changes, and modifications from custom roms can be patched to stock roms; the only advantage of using custom ones is that they're baked in for you.
I am sticking on stock rom for now, just going to root so I can restore a lot of my old apps, nothing more.
I've already flashed Da_G's root/over clock kernel, which got rid of the lag I was seeing. As soon as cwm comes out of beta I'm going to check out saurom. The Note's out of the box experience is one of the best I've seen, but there is just too much improvement to be had to stay stock, IMHO.

I think it is a good idea to stay all stock until ics update comes out and we apply it. (I expect them to want us to be all stock when applying the ics update that is why)

Fair enough but there will be several ICS Roms months before official AT&T. (I am typing from my ICS Captivate right now for example). Plus you can always flash back to stock.

I was stock from best buy to my house and that's it and I can't wait till I can get a sub 100mb ROM onto here. The bloat is sickening and even after removing down to mid 100 it's still not performing to it's non touchwiz potential.
Just to throw in my two-cents, I am fairly impressed as well with the Touchwiz 4.0 interface. Coming from an Atrix (blur) and Inspire (sense), touchwiz is a big step up imo. It feels like gingerbread done right to me. Although it isn't without a few issues, like the slight but noticable lag (to be fair all stock roms seem to stutter a bit occasionally), the no wallpaper scrolling and no landscape mode for the touchwiz launcher.
I think it will be interesting to see what devs or even Samsung/AT&T come up with to merge Touchwiz and ICS. It's gonna be a good year in the ROM community on this phone I can feel it.
Both my notes are on stock. I have no need for a rom.

Yeah but... stock IS a ROM, too.
I think it is a great thing that this phone is so good that we can use it stock. Haven't got mine yet but I only plan to Root it and use stock for a few weeks, at least.
So far yes
Right now there really aren't that many roms for the galaxy note lte so I'm going to wait until ICS comes out play with that for a while then I'll be flashing away!
I think people obsess over nothing rather than actually use their devices. That said, I'm not bothering to flash anyone's cooked ROM until there's an ICS update from Samsung.

^That, less the o/c kernel. The performance boost isn't exacted necessary, but you WILL notice it.
I was going to try and stick with the stock ROM as long as possible. However, my addiction got the best of me, and im now laying in bed at the end of my first full day with my Note, and I'm running TPC2 with Da_G's OC kernel. Go figure. Haha.
Not that I was having troubles with the stock ROM, as it was actually really smooth and lag free for the most part. On the other hand, now my Note is an absolute beast. The Note is definitely the first Android I've been happy with out of the box, but I would still rather be running a custom ROM, if not just so I can tell people it's running custom software when I show them my phone.
Samsung really hit it out of the park with this phone. I will never look at a smaller phone the same way again. Forever ruined! And I find the SPen to be really comfy for just navigating my phone and precision of selection. Swyping is fun with it.

I think it's not necessary for me to do anything yet. But don't get me wrong, I will root the phone eventually. I have a real problem with ATT telling me that I "have" to suffer software I don't want on MY phone. That in its self encourages me to root. But, I am waiting to see if ICS is really going to be available soon.
I wonder though if Rooting would affect the upgrade process--perhaps someone could answer this for me. If not, I would be tempted to root my Note after the thirty days (window of time for return) is up.
I flashed roms daily on my Inspire, but I am stock now and planning on staying that way forever or at least until If leaks. the only thing I've done is root to disable ads and remove bloatware.
I'm still stock. I've rooted and jailbrake-ed other phones. I really like this one the way it is. The bloatware etc don't bother me much. I may root after ICS. For now, my Note rocks pretty hard just the way it is.

Are you asking if root will affect upgrading to ICS? The answer to that is no. If you flash a custom ROM then that answer is yes. You would need to go back to stock ROM for the ICS update from ATT. However, there will be ICS ROMs here well before ATT releases it.
What's the 30 days thing? Not getting that part. What happens in 30 days? Maybe you mean the window to return your Note. I agree you might want to wait for that to expire before root. But you can also un-root if you want.
I'm on stock rom and don't plan to root anytime soon for both of my devices the note and gnex!

[Q] LOW performance on Galaxy S3!

Hi,
Is anyone else experiencing this, or does anyone have a solution?
For some reason i'm not expereincing the full thrust of performance the Galaxy S3 has to offer.
The home screens 'jolt' when moving left to right, but the more annoying thing is that widgets (like the weather etc) KEEP disappearing and reloading (doesnt take long to reload, fine, but still! Galaxy S2 didnt do this!)
This was all noticiable in the 'TouchWiz' Launcher, so i thought i would try another launcher... Nope, same thing!! Apex, Launcher Pro, GO Launcher etc..
Also, some apps crash, more than the occasional crash you would experience on the S2.
It also freezes up on my for about 10 seconds before reloading the widgets/icons...
I've gone down SO many routes. Its definetly not that theres too much running, because i find myself closing apps through task manager ALL the time, more than i should need to ...But even with NO apps running, same thing
I just dont get, does anyone have a solution or could shed some light on WHY this is happening? I've hit a brick wall for trying to stop this and am hoping that its not just a 'dodgy device'!
Thank you to whoever responds...
Def sounds like a dud there. Try going into Apex launcher and tick the setting to keep the launcher in ram. Ive heard loads of problems about TW reloading itself after running things like the web browser and gaming :/

Shouldn't NEED to be flashing anything, mine was sheer awesome out of the box.
All I've done was flash the insecure kernel... which is the same just adb etc. enabled, and rooted.

Networks do not matter with custom ROMs, as long as you are flashing a ROM for the right phone i.e. the international version, and not the north american version. (which you don't need to worry about yet because it's not out yet)
Check if you have Power Saving turned off. It throttles the CPU making scrolling etc noticeably slower.
Mine loads the weather widget coming out of S-Voice. But other than that never misses a beat. Smooth even when using 90% of its ram.
Did a test of its speed and its above the Asus prime easy, so sounds like you have an issue.

same here
Man same thing here - only been 4 days since i bought my gs3 and i'm having issues.. i was running a benchmark when i saw cpu it said 1000MHz and max cycles 1400MHz i think we got a gs3 without exynos system - like they did with galaxy s2 had the i9100G model. Of tjis is the case and i find out i'm gonna spend any ounce of energy i have getting it replaced. The worst thibg is the browser cant handle videos on youtube. Performance is pathetic and weirdest tthibg i didnt have flipboard pre loaded on my gs3. Even now im on my gs3 and the browser wont let me fix "thing" that i wrote in the previous sentence. Totally shud have gotten htc one x
you all can flash latest version which should help with launcher redraw ... and after that do a full hard reset: *2767*3855#

Not having any issues. Suggest you uninstall apps and track down what's causing you pain or take it back. There is nothing wrong with this phone. If you are having slow performance obviously a quad core phone may I suggest an iphone.

Same for me
The thing is that a big company that is trying to resemble other competitors cant release a product that will act that way and call it their flag ship.... Most of the owners wont twik it. the phone its a big draw back for me and disappointment... Really miss my s2 some times. Its one thing to pile new features wether they work or not and make the product worse than its predecessor. Big big disappointment. Happy with the screen, battery and looks though will wait for a proper Rom or Google clean products that are to come.

Your S2 has had a years worth of development and optimization. I bet you'll say the same about your S3 when we're all using the S4.
I completely agree with the guy. My most common activity on my phone is browsing whilst listening to music, and this phone just can't hack it. Waaaay too regular cut outs, I'm pissed off.
Remove all bloatware and corresponding background services, get a good kernel (Franco r5 is great), you'll find phone is much better, in a few months, it will have moved on loads and will be so much better
Sent via TCP/IP
Yall are the odd ones out then. my phone was actually VERY VERY good at multi tasking out of the box. i could surf the web, play my music, and watch a movie with super video....and never get redraws, or hickups, leave apps open and keep going......i could not get it to do any lagging unless you speaking of the micro stutter in home screens. which is gone now with a custom rom and a few misc things here and there.
yall seem to keep wanting to blame it on the phone.....i dont quite understand this.

[Q] Will I loose oculus support and OTA after root

Hi, I want to root my galaxy s6 edge and install custom kernel on it. This is in an attempt to speed it up a bit because it is painfully slow compared to other manufacturers' flagships. Even my old htc one m7 feels like it runs faster.
Anyways I have a gear VR and gear s2 and I wonder if the related apps on my phone will have any issues with the root or the custom kernel. Also will I receive OTA updates with the custom recovery? Actually do I need a custom recovery to flash a new kernel?
Thanks

Try to factory reset first. I don't think rooting then flashing custom kernel would help as long as you're using current setup.
Not sure on the devices support. You won't be receiving ota anymore. Normally we flash a kernel using custom recovery but probably doable using odin provided you can convert in into .tar file.

Thanks, but the phone felt slow the second I turned it on after I bought it. It was such a disappointment to have spent that much money for a worse experience than what I already had. Things got a little better after the Marshmallow upgrade, but it is still slow. Factory resetting it will not fix the issue The only reason I bought this device was because I already had the gear S2, which btw is awesome, but some of its options work only with samsung phones. I know this is not the place to complain from Samsung, but they are really annoying. Why won't they fix the fu**ing performance on their phones. And they should really start paying attention to the other parts of the phones other than the camera and the display. Their phones have awful sound and DACs, really low AMPs, explodable batteries, slow bluetooth and the OS updates are released half an year after the official android releases.
If anybody knows a way to at least fix the software speed please share. I will gladly accept suggestions for a good speedy ROM where oculus and gear s2 will work.

But I have 2 colleagues with s6 Edge+ phones and theirs are the same. It is not THAT slow, I am over exaggerating here, but I feel like it should be snappier for a phone with its specs. Even watching videos from the Note 7 I can see the same issues present. For example there is scrolling lag here and there, the home button takes several milliseconds to a second to start acting after being pressed (again not always), the app switcher button is also laggy (always). Such things that annoy me. Also, I feel kind of claustrophobic when my device is not rooted These past several months without root have been tough

I know this device is old.. its the only one I have right now and have no clue if i'd ever get the money to upgrade.. just curious how many people still check this forum or if i'm one of the only few...

Thanks!
interesting.. 10 views already and no votes or posts... lol..
i see it has 23 views.. and 2 responses. Great! so there is still some life here. Are any developers still here?
I still use this device for gaming only. I play Underworld Empire via WiFi/mobile hotspot. Have multiple toons in the games . It is rooted and running TeamOctos MM weekly build rom.
I use my old Note II as a training device for my 6 year old. The thing is a tank.

Not sure if there is any that hangs around this forum. TeamOctos has their rom on their own website, I'm glad they still make weekly builds for this phone. Runs pretty smoothly for me.

First Off, thanks for the response!
Second, Yeah i would love to go with a newer weekly build and version of android.. .. but I just really like to have screen options to turn screen off, bring up power menu, and have options for screenshot and screen record. I had forgotten about the power of XPosed Framework ( which R3D utilizes ) and perhaps that could help make OCTos more useful for me..
I also do like some of the touchwiz features that I can use with the S-Pen.. so i'm torn.. LOL
I have xposed installed along with TeamOctos, gravity box mm module installed. Since TeamOctos rom have most of the features, I scantily use the gravity box options. Don't wanna break anything lol. I find the s-pen was more a gimmick than anything else. The capacitive buttons don't work with the pen, have to manually press with finger (this was fixed with the Note 3, which I sold). Also there are 3rd party apps that can do just about the same as the Samsung spen apps.

I have xposed installed along with TeamOctos, gravity box mm module installed. Since TeamOctos rom have most of the features, I scantily use the gravity box options. Don't wanna break anything lol. I find the s-pen was more a gimmick than anything else. The capacitive buttons don't work with the pen, have to manually press with finger (this was fixed with the Note 3, which I sold). yeah i was using that for a little bit.. but I noticed the overall sound volume seemed to be lower... when I went back to 4.4.2 , i could really hear the difference... i'm not sure if that is a AOSP issue or what.. do you notice it?
Yes unfortunately it is because of AOSP. I remember having to manually editing a mixer.xml file to increase the volume but still wasn't close to the sound level of TW rom. I got use to the low lvls after a while.
Now I don't use it as my daily driver so sound isn't really an issue anymore. Performance and battery life is what I'm looking for so it's ideal.

Ahh ok thank you. that makes me feel a lot better to know it wasn't just me that noticed it and that it wasn't directly related to my phone or my flash status...
so I guess its not an easy fix or even possible since it wasn't addressed when this phone was still being developed... darn..
I really don't recall what the reasoning was, if it was due to drivers or software. It can be remedied by editing the sound file, I believe someone has done it with this phone. Do a post search for low sound or mixer.xml on here.
Haha not trying to sell AOSP roms or anything but I find them more useful with their options. Isn't that the main reason people use Android phones, for their customization?

HA yes.. but i guess for those of us that don't have multiple phones to try out different ROMs and updates :silly: constantly have to find the happy medium between stability, functionality and customization.. Right now i'm gonna stick with TW 4.4.2 (at least on my Note II) since I need to have these things on my phone for me to use it as a daily driver:
1. Stable (won't freeze up / random reboots / random power offs / FC'ers)
2. Camera - Camera must be able to take great photos (at least as good as the physical camera is)
3. Sound - Must have great sounding audio for voice calls / speakerphone / ringtones and for media watching
4. Functional - Must be able to not miss calls / notifications or messages and connect to data for internet
5. Battery - Battery must be decent to good.. want it to be able to last at least 1 day of medium to heavy use..

You are correct there. I could not find it either myself. I wonder if TeamOctos even included it in their build for this phone. I checked with another phone of mine (LG G3) thats running the same ROM. It has the mixer_paths.xml in the folder system/ETC. May have to contact them to find out why... Sorry, like I've mentioned, I don't use my Note II as a daily driver so haven't had the need to increase the sound levels. I wonder if its possible to just copy the file from another ROM?

yeah i thought about that but nervous with all that modifications either messing something up or not even getting it as loud as TW..
right now i think ill stay with a 4.4.2 rom and use xposed to get the features i like. do wish i had 6.0 but have to be happy with what i got. ?
Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful. Hope things will look up for you and that you may be able to afford a newer phone. This years phone releases haven't been all the great, maybe next year will see some really great improvements. The biggest thing is the battery life in most cell phones nowadays (unless you have removable option). Manufacturers will never give you a better battery/longer life because they want consumers to keep buying newer phones. Batteries usually only have a lifetime of about ~1.5 years, the more you charge, the less it will hold a charge. Forces people to buy new phones

yeah true.. and for me its difficult because i'm fairly picky with what I want in the phone... seems like i haven't actually found a "perfect" one yet... several will have 80 to 90% but some will be missing 1 major thing i want.. and then i have to decide how important that is... So far from all the phones i had.. I think my Nexus 5 would probably me my all time favorite... of course I would have preferred an AMOLED display, front facing speakers and better cameras... but again.. had to pick and choose... the HTC 10 was amazing as well.. but I did have some issues with my LTE signal dropping.. so not sure if it was a fluke or because of my Total Wireless service? maybe the ROM.. idk.. LOL
Hmm favorite all time, may have to go with my Note 3 til I sold it. Had it with Verizon, unfortunately the bootloader was locked and when I updated to Jasmine rom, screwed up and lost root. It was a great phone, s pen is so useful, removable battery, amoled display, SD card slot. Camera was alright, my V10 excels in that department! I'm with T-mobile now, service is great for where I need it and their phones are mostly bootloader unlocked. Can easily root them.
Watching Floss Carter on YouTube, with his review of HTC 10. His biggest negative factor is that the phone is too small for him. Everything else is good, he even mentions that HTC should've made two options like HTC 10 and 10+.
His top 5 phones:
1: Note 5
2: Nexus 6p
3: iPhone 6s+
4: S7 edge
5: LG G5

What is best option for nexus9.

Hi guys,
I'm sorry cause asking this, especially cause this question has been asked manytimes and I have read several subjects too, but I didn't strict answer I'm looking for.
I recently bought nexus 9 (WiFi only model) 16gigs,
I unlocked bootloader, I rooted the device and now I want to debloat it.
I'm in dilema weither I should just have it rooted and debloated on 7.1.1. android, or should I use some of the custom roms around.
I'm aiming to use tablet mainly for gaming. I have servral games I'd like to play listed:
Marvel Future Fight
DC Legends
Star Wars Galaxy Heroes
Star Wars Force arena
and few others but i take it that if those can run fine, all others would too.
Also can someone point me to a safelist of application that can be removed if answer to first question is to just leave it rooted and debloat.
Thank you a lot for help.
Cheers.

For the best performance, install a custom ROM. As for debloat, ... It's a Nexus, what bloat?
But if you want minimal, I would say flash slimrom and the smallest gapps package that fits your needs. Or go gapps free and use micro g instead.
Performance on stock is pretty bad (really bad), but a custom ROM will fix it for the n9. When I say bad on stock, I mean opening more than 1 tab in chrome, it has to reload the page every time switching between the two. Same with having a couple apps open.
Fortunately, most of the ROMs out there take care of all that.

I'm on latest Android 6 stock, unencrypted and Fire Ice kernel. its running fine and if use the chrome that comes with the stock and don't update it, it will run fine.
How would someone find official roms? I used pure nexus rom thinking that is official but i guess i was wrong. I not to big on roms knowing. They all looks the same to me I just care to be able to uninstall builtin apps i don't use and that everything works fine.
This one i use now had a problem common with nexus 9, white blocks and anoying skrechy sound, but i read somehwere it is fixed by unhoking battery, cleaning pins and putting it back together. I tried it and I didn't have problems since then. I drained battery to 2% no problem, before it was impossible. I have no idea was it ROM issue or what.

That's a common hardware issue for n9, not a ROM issue.

But it's safe to say that it's fixed now. Everyone was talkin about disconnecting battery, and clean a bit and connecting again.
it seems such a easy troll solution to this "very anoying and hard problem that even HTC didn't solve", and i did it and it really did the job (knock on a wood ). I've been draining battery to the end for 3 days now, nothing ever like that happend ever again. before it wasn't even a day when i didn't experienced that problem.

Good to hear. That usually is the fix for that.
Please, just to confirm, is this "image-volantis-n9f27l" official ROM or it's custom ROM?
I also use this bootloader : "bootloader-flounder-3.50.0.0143" since other ones didn't work for me.
I was with support trying to solve issue of Device restarting every time I install new app or update app, and while trying to clear cache partition, it gone to my device not wanting to boot. so i had to factory reset, and it still won't start android in full. so i have to reflash ROM. I guess.
I'm kinda lost now cause i don't know what to do.
As said i just want for my device to be rooted so i can delete all apps i don't need and change launcher (deleting existing one - well i don't know if it's smart or not. i figure why having two launcers when i will use only one).
And i want to play games and use apps without it failing on me all the time.
