My questions may seem dumb but I have never owned a Samsung phone.
I know samsung likes their bloatware and proprietary methods. Can I avoid all the samsung bloat and a samsung account and still use the phone? Are there ROMs that give a stock android experience?
Also what are you guys seeing for SOT? Im coming from a Asus ROG 6 Pro.
Any bugs you guys are experiencing? My 6Pro is so full of bugs that has pushed me to move brands.
You don't need a custom rom, you don't even need to root it, just use universal android debloater gui from github or adb app control to remove all the bloat (both include good instructions and details about what to remove) and going through first time set up you don't need a samsung or google account.
Unless you are using an international version there is no custom ROM option. The 918U and U1 models don't have the option to OEM unlock and flash ROMs.
You can easily umbloat using the mentioned universal android debloater.
Ui downloaded the 5.0 or sth like that and updated, then it all went south.
Stayed with the 5.0 version and it works great.
As for the ROM I put Nova Launcher and it works fine
Not the same but as long as the X3 camera shoots ****ty pictures I'll leave it warranty capable

What's wrong with your x3? Mine's impeccable. Didn't hear about any other complaints whatsoever.

No bugs. Phone is super smooth and battery is amazing. About bloatware you can find everything you need in XDA thread called "Samsung Galaxy One UI - Optimization Guide".

Well, I used the "remove noise" or whatsoever option.
But for a X3 zoom I find the quality more than disappointing.
My Vivo X70Pro shots better photos.
Applied goodlock camera assistant, a bit better, and even gcam.
But quality just sucks for such a "high end" model...
Hoping on a FW fix though since with gcam its quite less worse
No issue here with 3x zoom with my S23U camera (B-version, EUX), just stock point&shoot....
Something like this ?
I'll retry with more natural light.
Maybe that's the issue.
Was pretty dark the time I took the picture
Awesome, thanks for the replies. Since there is no custom roms, do we still have unlock and root available? At bare minimum i would like to install AdAway got universal ad blocking.

We can unlock and root. Look for the guide in this sub forum. Root will tripped knox tho, so some samsung app won't work. I would suggest using adhell to block ad

No magisk module or similar to get around this?
My biggest concern is just losing the samsung camera, I hear other cameras apks dont work well with the phone.

Please try to activate night mode before switching to x3. Also in low light you need to be VERY still for the sensor and ISP to work its magic.
Moreoever, keep your lenses clean as much as possible.
These 2 photos I just shot now in a very dimly light room.

Thx for the info, I will give it a try.
Just wondering why someone would apply night mode while using light in their living room
But if works like this, this is what it is .
Thanks for the info

Hey everyone,
I'm living in EU and 5x is coming in about 3-4 days. Prior to purchasing this device and seeing the actual price difference between the two I'd like to know what's your initial impression? I've heard that the EMUI is very heavy and slows down the phone (which I'm sure can be fixed by custom rom).
Cheers and enjoy/hate your new phone.
I've had it about 8 hours now and so far I can't find anything I don't like. This just replaced my Note 2 so about anything is an upgrade. I have no use for the dual sim card, but its cool that it there, plus you can have two sims and an SD card in it at the same time. Very pleased.
Edit: Oh and the battery is supposed to last more than a day with moderate use.
ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ
I to have had it for the day. Just picked it up during lunch. So far I have noticed some lag here and there when going though apps like YouTube and the playstore. I plan on using this for a hotspot/tethering phone as well as my international travel phone so the dual sim was one of the factors in my purchase. So far though I like it a lot. The fingerprint scanner is fast and only didn't read my finger once out of the numerous times I unlocked my phone with it. I can't wait for the dev's to get the root so we can load better software.

Have you tried Disable Application (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iamaner.oneclickfreeze&hl=en). I've disabled multiple gapps and stock apps with it without any problem. What would you say is script's benefit over Disable Application?
I have used it for a week. Camera design is weird, convex too much on back.
Rock. Solid. Phone. Stock ROM after cleanup runs great!
I have mine since 10 hours and I can confirm that it's hanging in some situations, but nothing serious... I'll unlock it soon and debloat it too.
looking forward to some Vanilla AOSP Roms =)
Hi, I want to root my galaxy s6 edge and install custom kernel on it. This is in an attempt to speed it up a bit because it is painfully slow compared to other manufacturers' flagships. Even my old htc one m7 feels like it runs faster.
Anyways I have a gear VR and gear s2 and I wonder if the related apps on my phone will have any issues with the root or the custom kernel. Also will I receive OTA updates with the custom recovery? Actually do I need a custom recovery to flash a new kernel?
Thanks

Try to factory reset first. I don't think rooting then flashing custom kernel would help as long as you're using current setup.
Not sure on the devices support. You won't be receiving ota anymore. Normally we flash a kernel using custom recovery but probably doable using odin provided you can convert in into .tar file.

Thanks, but the phone felt slow the second I turned it on after I bought it. It was such a disappointment to have spent that much money for a worse experience than what I already had. Things got a little better after the Marshmallow upgrade, but it is still slow. Factory resetting it will not fix the issue The only reason I bought this device was because I already had the gear S2, which btw is awesome, but some of its options work only with samsung phones. I know this is not the place to complain from Samsung, but they are really annoying. Why won't they fix the fu**ing performance on their phones. And they should really start paying attention to the other parts of the phones other than the camera and the display. Their phones have awful sound and DACs, really low AMPs, explodable batteries, slow bluetooth and the OS updates are released half an year after the official android releases.
If anybody knows a way to at least fix the software speed please share. I will gladly accept suggestions for a good speedy ROM where oculus and gear s2 will work.

Try to reinitialize the device using smart switch. It shouldn't behaving like that even stock. Hopefully only some files are broken, not a hardware fault.

But I have 2 colleagues with s6 Edge+ phones and theirs are the same. It is not THAT slow, I am over exaggerating here, but I feel like it should be snappier for a phone with its specs. Even watching videos from the Note 7 I can see the same issues present. For example there is scrolling lag here and there, the home button takes several milliseconds to a second to start acting after being pressed (again not always), the app switcher button is also laggy (always). Such things that annoy me. Also, I feel kind of claustrophobic when my device is not rooted These past several months without root have been tough

Also if you are a typical visitor.. maybe post up so I can get to know this Note II community.
Thanks!
interesting.. 10 views already and no votes or posts... lol..
i see it has 23 views.. and 2 responses. Great! so there is still some life here. Are any developers still here?
I still use this device for gaming only. I play Underworld Empire via WiFi/mobile hotspot. Have multiple toons in the games . It is rooted and running TeamOctos MM weekly build rom.
I use my old Note II as a training device for my 6 year old. The thing is a tank.

Not sure if there is any that hangs around this forum. TeamOctos has their rom on their own website, I'm glad they still make weekly builds for this phone. Runs pretty smoothly for me.

First Off, thanks for the response!
Second, Yeah i would love to go with a newer weekly build and version of android.. .. but I just really like to have screen options to turn screen off, bring up power menu, and have options for screenshot and screen record. I had forgotten about the power of XPosed Framework ( which R3D utilizes ) and perhaps that could help make OCTos more useful for me..
I also do like some of the touchwiz features that I can use with the S-Pen.. so i'm torn.. LOL
I have xposed installed along with TeamOctos, gravity box mm module installed. Since TeamOctos rom have most of the features, I scantily use the gravity box options. Don't wanna break anything lol. I find the s-pen was more a gimmick than anything else. The capacitive buttons don't work with the pen, have to manually press with finger (this was fixed with the Note 3, which I sold). Also there are 3rd party apps that can do just about the same as the Samsung spen apps.

yeah i was using that for a little bit.. but I noticed the overall sound volume seemed to be lower... when I went back to 4.4.2 , i could really hear the difference... i'm not sure if that is a AOSP issue or what.. do you notice it?
Yes unfortunately it is because of AOSP. I remember having to manually editing a mixer.xml file to increase the volume but still wasn't close to the sound level of TW rom. I got use to the low lvls after a while.
Now I don't use it as my daily driver so sound isn't really an issue anymore. Performance and battery life is what I'm looking for so it's ideal.

Ahh ok thank you. that makes me feel a lot better to know it wasn't just me that noticed it and that it wasn't directly related to my phone or my flash status...
so I guess its not an easy fix or even possible since it wasn't addressed when this phone was still being developed... darn..
I really don't recall what the reasoning was, if it was due to drivers or software. It can be remedied by editing the sound file, I believe someone has done it with this phone. Do a post search for low sound or mixer.xml on here.
Haha not trying to sell AOSP roms or anything but I find them more useful with their options. Isn't that the main reason people use Android phones, for their customization?

HA yes.. but i guess for those of us that don't have multiple phones to try out different ROMs and updates :silly: constantly have to find the happy medium between stability, functionality and customization.. Right now i'm gonna stick with TW 4.4.2 (at least on my Note II) since I need to have these things on my phone for me to use it as a daily driver:
1. Stable (won't freeze up / random reboots / random power offs / FC'ers)
2. Camera - Camera must be able to take great photos (at least as good as the physical camera is)
3. Sound - Must have great sounding audio for voice calls / speakerphone / ringtones and for media watching
4. Functional - Must be able to not miss calls / notifications or messages and connect to data for internet
5. Battery - Battery must be decent to good.. want it to be able to last at least 1 day of medium to heavy use..

You are correct there. I could not find it either myself. I wonder if TeamOctos even included it in their build for this phone. I checked with another phone of mine (LG G3) thats running the same ROM. It has the mixer_paths.xml in the folder system/ETC. May have to contact them to find out why... Sorry, like I've mentioned, I don't use my Note II as a daily driver so haven't had the need to increase the sound levels. I wonder if its possible to just copy the file from another ROM?

yeah i thought about that but nervous with all that modifications either messing something up or not even getting it as loud as TW..
right now i think ill stay with a 4.4.2 rom and use xposed to get the features i like. do wish i had 6.0 but have to be happy with what i got. ?
Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful. Hope things will look up for you and that you may be able to afford a newer phone. This years phone releases haven't been all the great, maybe next year will see some really great improvements. The biggest thing is the battery life in most cell phones nowadays (unless you have removable option). Manufacturers will never give you a better battery/longer life because they want consumers to keep buying newer phones. Batteries usually only have a lifetime of about ~1.5 years, the more you charge, the less it will hold a charge. Forces people to buy new phones

yeah true.. and for me its difficult because i'm fairly picky with what I want in the phone... seems like i haven't actually found a "perfect" one yet... several will have 80 to 90% but some will be missing 1 major thing i want.. and then i have to decide how important that is... So far from all the phones i had.. I think my Nexus 5 would probably me my all time favorite... of course I would have preferred an AMOLED display, front facing speakers and better cameras... but again.. had to pick and choose... the HTC 10 was amazing as well.. but I did have some issues with my LTE signal dropping.. so not sure if it was a fluke or because of my Total Wireless service? maybe the ROM.. idk.. LOL
Hmm favorite all time, may have to go with my Note 3 til I sold it. Had it with Verizon, unfortunately the bootloader was locked and when I updated to Jasmine rom, screwed up and lost root. It was a great phone, s pen is so useful, removable battery, amoled display, SD card slot. Camera was alright, my V10 excels in that department! I'm with T-mobile now, service is great for where I need it and their phones are mostly bootloader unlocked. Can easily root them.
Watching Floss Carter on YouTube, with his review of HTC 10. His biggest negative factor is that the phone is too small for him. Everything else is good, he even mentions that HTC should've made two options like HTC 10 and 10+.
His top 5 phones:
1: Note 5
2: Nexus 6p
3: iPhone 6s+
4: S7 edge
5: LG G5

So usually the first thing I do with all of my phones, is install a custom ROM ( and root obviously ). The newer the phones get the less reasons I find to void warranty and root it. Can someone give me a few good reasons to root my S9 plus, or tell me the reasons as to why you did it.
Thanks, Andrew.
Necessity to root, install ROMs has become less compared to earlier days with latest smartphones. But I flashed a custom ROM ( Resurrection Remix using TWRP) on the G-965F recently to stay away from samsung services and to get out of midrocre batterytime of the stock Firmware. Performance is out of the world and batterytime is solidly extended with it. Camera portrait mode doesn't work with Google hdr+ camera yet and that's a trade off should work in future.

That's the reasons I like also, I've always had loads better battery.
I bummed up, and let my phone reboot after OEM unlock, and now its disappeared for 7 more days again
I rooted all my phones for years, haven't felt the need on the S9+. Package Disabler Pro did everything I needed, and battery life is great (I did a 13 hours shift yesterday with lots of Facebook, photos, video recording, all on intermittent signal on both mobile and wifi, and battery went from 98% at 7am to 58% by 7.30pm.
I really don't know how you'd get much better life, other than a Mate 10 Pro, but they have their own issues...

I have noticed that battery life seems to be a hit and miss for people, some get really good, some get really bad.
Mine is mediocre, I feel like it could be better but it's not the worst in the world.

Yeah I tried to the first time, ah well these things happen haha.
rooting is a little more than just battery life, things like titanium backup still needs root, and if one decides to remove 'bloatware' (i.e. apps that one don't use) be it that they are sometimes nuisance with all the auto updates unwanted notifications, root is still needed
I rooted my galaxy s9 plus for various reasons. First to greatly enhance the audio by viper4android, and with dolby atmos also on at the same time it completely redefines the sound coming from it. Another reason for me was to use L speed, i have to say it actually makes a difference in performance and battery but not that much. And the third reason is to use substratum, i just love it.
So after all of this you think I am trying to convince you to root, but I don't actually recommend rooting this device specifically. Why? I really don't see the need of rooting it. It has everything that I wanted, but because of my childish brain I couldn't control myself so I went ahead and root it. After all, don't root it.
Debloating stuff which improves battery and performance, and a lot of other tweaks. As for me I use it with my ps4 controller using an app requiring me to root. Now I have my own retro console
This is my first phone I have used that includes NFC payment. So I have started to really enjoy the Samsung Pay feature. Are there anyways of still using this after rooting the phone?
Also can someone give a list of things to disable with 'Service Disabler'? I think Package Disabler Pro has been removed from the play store so I can't get it anymore
After having had a lot of Phones where I felt the need to root them, I can agree on what some others said before me, and that is that the S9+ is the first Phone I haven't felt the need for rooting it. It has basically everything I want that root could give me before, the only thing I am yet wanting is Viper4Android and TitaniumBackup, but there is Samsung Cloud for backup (it even works for gamesaves), and then the built in Equalizer is really good compared to any other from other OEM's. There are however downsides from rooting it, like not being able to use Samsung Pay for example, or Google Pay, or (if you're a fan of it, I dislike the game but whatever) Pokémon GO. Basically any app that uses SafetyNet will stop working (Magisk isn't 100% safe either and can fail). As Samsung gives me the option to theme my Phone to dark like I used to do with Root, and overclock it for Games using the GameTuner, and other things I did with root, I see no reason to really root my S9+ for now, maybe when it reaches it's EOL but currently it is better not to root it.
for me s9 plus need to be rooted, it depends what you use the root for
rom, kernal, games, backup, full control of your system
my head into stuff like this
for normal user i doubt it they even know what root can do
i rooted all my phones before the s9 plus this one waiting for it to be rooted

Ironically, you need to have magisk to get those apps to work. If you have magisk, you can change your device fingerprint using a modue called magisk hide props.
Will This Interfere With My Cell Phone Plan
The only reason I am hesitant to root my Galaxy S9 , is that I'm not sure of all of the negative impacts of rooting. here is my question. If I root my phone will i get to keep my cell phone plan? and will i be able to trade in my phone in the future?
I've had a lot of phones, all of them was rooted, even my S7, but the S9+ is my first that I haven't felt the need to root or anything else.
It's just a great phone.

You will keep your cell phone plan as that's based on the Sim card. And trade in depends on region I think. But factory reset with original recovery and everything should mean you can trade in unless your telecom company doesn't like it
Right now I'm struggling really hard to find a new phone I want, and realistically none meet my standards due to low battery, or bad camera specs and software support. However I keep finding myself wanting the Xperia line of phones, and I strangely really want to get this phone but I hear and know of many cons already. Heating issues, and in a year or two it's going to lose software support right?
However would rooting it, or people who have rooted the phone solve the issues regarding the phone themselves? Like was the os optimized better for thermals, or is there a good line of custom roms that can securely update the phone that way instead? Was it worth it to go through the hassle, or is bricking a strong issue and unable to be dealt with.
Cuz honestly I just want a decent phone of 5000MAH, great camera, and good dual speakers tbh. It'd be cool if it'd come with a headphone jack too, and if micro sd was an option but honestly I only use about 80gb of storage anyway.
101% i love my with root

Mind telling me what you did that fixed the stock flaws? I got my heart set on one of the Xperia phones lol. Tje 1V looks amazing but I wanna wait for the 5V at the same time too lol
5v wont be relased until september or maybe later.. they tend to follow yearly schedule
and if u like the notification LED better hurry caus i red some information about its no longer at the X1 V
and if this happens 8 bet same will happen at the X5 V
I haven't needed to fix any flaws really, but still rooted to remove bloat, block ads, access app data, improve privacy etc.

ShatteredSpider exactly this! I've done all that and tbh so far (4 months), have not an issue to shout about. Perhaps its by removing the bloat, thoough very little compared to some phones, having a rooted ad-blocker makes my phone run flawlessly so far without no crazy heat issues. Of course there have been some official updates, mostly security but they may have tinkered around with the initial heating issue too. Battery life is great, magisk+modules run perfectly and banking apps work fine too. So far, my best and easiest rooted phone experience so far with some great cameras/software, plus I've got Gcam/revanced running too as a plus. New phone sensor does sound great, not sure I need to jump to it, especially as gcam night images work pretty well for me and even for general snappy images.
@davestuarts Was there anything root-related that you had to do to get GCam working properly? I had a hard time with it initially though it did take pictures and then it stopped working entirely, possibly due to a system update.

I don't think Gcam technically requires root, there's nothing I can remember that suggests it, as I remember testing Gcam when I first had the phone and was untouche/not rooted.
I've had Gcam 8.1 installed since (with a profile) and it's been running fine, mostly photos and occasionally videos.
I've updated the rom about three times, though manually as it's rooted, but Gcam continues to work. I've tested other versions of Gcam but they either didn't work or crashed. That's all I can say. Any further questions, I'll try and answer if I know.

Oooo please send what kind of photos you take on the phone, i wanna see the quality!! To me it seems like the perfect mid tier phone, but I wanted to see the stock photos, pro photos and possible gcam but haven't reliably seen results only a few reviews. I also wanna try to work it into being a professional webcam when I'm home for motion tracking but afraid of bad quality?
