Hey guys, I am trying to get recovery and root off of my phone so I can get the phone back into un-voided warrenty state. I know the safestrap apk. does not fully remove it itself, and that there is an alternative way by using adb. Which I have never used but have it downloaded. I am just asking for some guidance here so I can do this properly, thanks in advance!

I think you would need to search for "Odin back to stock" I have run across threads on it occasionally.

I was thinking the same thing. I have the stock .tar file and odin. My question then is, by doing this it will remove all of the recovery and root on my phone?

Download this, protect root, download update, restore root. You should be okay.
anyone else having issues updating. It downloads the update and then after reboot it has the android with the gears moving and then it shows a brief android with a red triangle on top of him and then it just reboots back to 4.1.1.

If you want root I would play it safe.
verizon / samsung do follow xda and they have been patching holes within their devices. to be safe you should wait for dev to get this file and give you direction.
a day (maybe two) wait will not hurt you! if you jump, it could be month before you get root back.

Actually I was rooted by root66.zip and everything was fine until I got the update. Now My phone is bootlooping on note 2 logo. would not go to recovery at all. It will go to download mode though. Just warning people who are trying to update and have root66,zip flashed.

Does anyone have the SystemUI.apk by chance? I did the WiFi toggle hack and thought I backed up the file but no dice. I can't upgrade it keeps erroring out on SystemUI.apk.
Has anyone successfully used OTA Root keeper with this new update? I don't want to be the guinea pig! I've never used it for an OTA, just for temp hiding root.

I've had a new custom ROM for a few week and everything is working fine, but out of no where I seem to have lost my root access. Nothing else is wrong with the phone and the custom ROM is all I have changed on the phone. I've tried to reroot it with various methods to no success. Does anyone have any solutions?

If you have MDK build, you're one of the very lucky people who can run arbitrary custom ROMs and don't need to use Safestrap. Please avoid upgrading beyond that as it will limit what you can do.

Your telling me! I did a lil research and saw that there were ROMs for the s4 and I just got it the other day and coming from the s3 I was like this will be easy to root and flash again..... Pshhhh come to find out I bought an MJ7 so the rooting process was a pain in the @#$%& lol

Admittedly I'm new to this, but from my research, can't you just flash an old kernel/version and then install whatever you want?
Wouldn't this method work? galaxys4root . com/galaxy-s4-root/how-to-root-verizon-galaxy-s4-sch-i545/
Basically put in ODIN mode and install an old image, then you can install the ROM you want, right?

Exactly.
If you are on a newer version of ROM, you cannot go back.
That is why, one should be very careful about taking an update.
Thanks for the info. Glad I didn't try that
When I got my device it was at least two versions back, so there's no way to factory reset my device to what I got when I first received my device?

It's relatively well documented that you cannot downgrade from MJ7. If I recall, it's not a hard brick. It's either a soft brick or the flash just fails.
I have faith that we'll have an answer to this soon. Devs never take long to find a workaround.

@Stolly08 what method did you use to Root? I'm still hesitant to try...had my VZ GS4 (running MJ7) for about 3 weeks now.
I'm basically trying to rid my device of bloatware (and praying to eventually flash custom ROMS whenever we all figure that out )
After having HTC phones for 5 years, all rooted, I said enough of the crappy battery life and decided to take the Samsung mainly because of the huge dev support and good battery life. Kinda bummed out we dont have root for MJ7 with unlocked boot loader but Im sure the Dev's are working hard to get it for us

Description: This is a guide (based similar to my previous guide for the Verizon Galaxy S III) that will help you flash a 99.9% stock factory image for the Verizon Galaxy S4 overwriting every partition on the device back to stock. The ONLY major change I have made is for your convenience I have modified the factory image to keep all your data/apps/settings and internal storage partition intact. This method should help you restore from any soft-brick that you may encounter without having to wipe your data.
Minor Warning: Please note that if you had any special mods that you had to manually flash before or move on the system partition (like Google Wallet, AOSP 4.2 apps like camera and gallery, etc...) they will be lost as you are overwriting your system partition to factory stock. Please make sure to do the needful with your mods before following this guide (for example resetting the Google Wallet app).
